Review Malaysian Hut Restaurant - Surrey

Great little taste of Malaysia. The chef was quite accommodating to our party's needs as some has Gluten intolerances and adjusted a few of the items accordingly. The smells were wonderful, and the tastes reminded us of Malaysia. We had a birthday party celebration and everyone was impressed by the great variety and tastes that came from the Malaysian Hut!

We had a great experience here while dining in for dinner. Strike up a great conversation with Irene. If you’re looking for that authentic Malaysia taste that you have been craving for, then look no further. This is the place you have been looking for. Pro tip : Always call in advance to check if they are open for business.

I very rarely give a restaurant a low rating but I just have to with this one purely based on the food, even though the owner couple seem really nice and conversational. We went there for the first time and ordered Mee Goreng and Beef Redang and asked them to make both really spicy and to make them as to-go orders. Upon receiving the items I confirmed with the lady if they were made spicy and she said yes and that she was coughing up while making the mee goreng so it will be spicy. I asked if she had the chilli sauce she used as sometimes the Asian restaurants say they have made it spicy but they really ain’t spicy so then it helps to use their chilli sauce so she said she didn’t have any and that she had regular chilli sauce so we didn’t get any. Anyway, when we opened the mee goreng we were surprised to see just 1 SINGLE Shrimp in the whole box!!!! And there were 4-5 small pieces of tofu like u can see in the pictures. That’s a rip off for the money u pay! They should At least mention that on their menu that we he dish comes with 1 shrimp and nothing else but the noodles & 4 pieces of tiny tofu! So we know what we are ordering. And of course it was NoT Spicy as we wanted. Now onto the Beef Redang- it was a simple Beef curry! It did not have that peculiar Indonesian spice paste that a beef Redang should have. It lacked flavour and taste, forget about it being spicy. So sad! We make better beef curry at home! Another waste of $15 for it. I almost forgot to mention that beef Redang comes with sooo much of oil on top that I had too pour the excess into the sink! (Check pictures for before and after)I can’t believe how this place gets so many good reviews. Clearly they have forgotten or don’t know how Malaysian and Indonesian food tastes. Extremely disappointing! Also the indoor seating looks so drabby which is why we ordered take out.

Place is delicious! Would be nice to try dining in when COVID is over, but pickup works alright. Haiananese chicken, nasi Lemak, Mee goreng, and curry Mee are all delicious and definitely craveable.

the carb to meat/ vege ratio is totally unacceptable. Never been to a peace where they cut a prawn in half and pass it on as 1 too save$$. Quite unaccomodating as well when we brought this to their attention. Hainan chicken looks like it is made from a chicken kfc rejected as is too malnourished and feeble and it tastes like that is the case as well. If i wanted to carb up i would have gone home and made a pot of rice...

It's a taste of everyday Malaysian cooking, the dishes are pretty good and authentic. I am cognizant of the regional differences of tastes, ingredients and cooking style for the same name dishes. I do think that the prices are a little bit of the high side compared to similar establishment and serving sizes. Service is very friendly although when we went down sit in dining was not available because of the covid-19 pandemic.

Ever since travelling to Sarawak, I have been LOOKING for Sarawak-style Laksa. At Malaysian Hut, I’ve found it! This tasted right, and it was delicious! The owner is from Kuching in Malaysia, and it’s rare to be able to find Kuching Style Laksa, as well! Currently, the restaurant is only doing take out, but we were able to eat outdoors at the benches by the Dairy Queen. They were really lovely and the food was delicious - absolutely worth the drive out from Vancouver! I hope to come visit again soon!

Everything tasted delicious! Both my girlfriend and I got the curry me. I would definitely recommend checking this place out! Ate the food before I could take a picture to post on here. Good soup.

Close to authentic kolo mee and Sarawak laksa. Fast service. Could not order cendol as they don't make it in winter.

Absolutely yummy! Will come back to try other menus for sure.

CASH ONLY*** The food is wonderful and the staff is warm and friendly. Not ideal if you are in a hurry, but great for relaxing meal.
Menu that is posted on Zomato is old, the prices are about 20% higher, but the selection is similar.
Wow! The menu showcases the culinary highlights from each state of Malaysia. It is a lot of work to prepare so many different dishes in one menu.

The food is authentic and tasty. Its like taking holiday trip. Staff is friendly also. The decor is getting dated though.

Note this is a cash only restaurant.

A simple small restaurant not far from Guildford mall. Owners are from Sarawak. We tried the curry Mee and gado gado. The curry Mee tasted very authentic and very flavorful. The gado gado was savory and the sauce was loaded with crushed peanuts.

Chicken and rice is love! Beef rendang is love! Milk tea is also love! I guess they just need to update the resto coz it’s tooooooo old and dusty! Prices should be more reasonable too since they have small servings but the taste is yummy!

Hubby doesn’t want to go back here mainly bec of the ambience and price. If they renovate the place and consider lowering the prices then it’s gonna be a big hit!

Food is excellent, but ABSOLUTELY terrible service. The dear owner messed up our order a total of FOUR times, and seems to have this supiority complex where she thinks she can remember every order without screwing up.

Just to top it off she probably has the most SARCASTIC apology known to mankind.

Take her our of the equation and you get a smoking good restaurant.
Yes. We,re Eating Again.
Not much to look at from the outside, Malaysian Hut is located in a strip of businesses just west of 148th. Small and homey and not the least bit trendy, this family run place has apparently been around for over 20 years! We had the place to ourselves, Saturday around 7 but I noticed that they did some takeout business while we were there. We stared with an excellent Gado Gado. The tofu was still warm from the deep fryer while the peanut sauce had just a bit of a kick. We loved the crisp vegetable pieces including jicama. Next came Sarawak Curry Laksa. This was different from the Penang or other versions that we are used to but is specific to the Serewak area of Malaysia, the home of our hostess and proprietor. I looked up the recipe for the paste at the heart of the soup and there is a list of ingredients as long as a Mexican Mole. It included star anise, cardamon, cloves, coriander and nutmeg which really shine through in the delicious final product! It was a wonderful dish with the coconut, rice noodles, fish cake, shrimp and egg but with maybe a richer deeper flavoured broth than other versions of Laksa. Finally, we had Sambal Fish. This was battered, deep fried cod in a flavourful, more sweet than spicy sauce served with a side of coconut rice. We were not overwhelmed with coconut flavour but the rice was perfect for finishing the sauce. I love the amount of vegetables that were with the fish including bell peppers, tomato and onions. This meal was very much a treat and I found the prices to be more than reasonable. I love to learn something about a country's cuisine that I did not know before (the more regional aspect of Malaysian food) and to find a place that I consider to be a hidden gem. I almost prefer to keep it for ourselves but go and try them out! You will not be sorry!

We ordered take out from here and it was ready in 15-20 minutes. The food was delicious! The laksa and mee goreng was amazing, we’re definitely going back and Id recommend this place to others.

We went there because of the good reviews, and we weren't disappointed. The food and services were good. We ordered Roti as starter. It was cripsy, and the chilli sauce came with it was a very good match. Goda goda was a very delicious Nanyang style peanut butter salad that no peanut butter lovers like us should forget it. The meat of the Hainan chicken was so fresh and sweety. The chilli Beef Rendang was soft and chilli. Though the tastes of these two dishes were totally different, both of them were so yummy for matching the coconut rice came along with them. We had a good lunch today.

My wife and i Went here after seeing all the great reviews. The restaurant itself is very small, it probably seats 20 max. We ordered the beef rendang, roti canai and the chow mein egg noodles. The roti canai was delicious, it was flaky and crispy but not too oily, the curry sauce was on point. The noodle dish was delicious, they had a slight chew too them and we're not that greasy. The beef rendang was really spicy but was lacking flavour. Probably won't order the rendang next time. Will definatly go back though.
The restaurant was clean but wasn't fancy.

Food 4/5
Service 5/5
Atmosphere 3.5/5
I love this place. The Curry Mee is my favorite. The roti is amazing and it has this awesome dipping sauce that you MUST TRY. The owner is so nice and there costumer service is outstanding. The only tiny thing I would say that isn't great about this place is that it's cash only. And they don't advertise that when you look them up online. You only find out when you walk in the door and there is a small sign. Other than that this place rocks my world.

We came here several times when we make a trip to Surrey. Their sambal fish is really good and the fish is really tender and juicy. I didn't really like their assam laksa, I find it's bit too sour for me. Their curry mee is not bad but I like Tamarind Hill laksa better. Their curry chicken is not bad but I normally stick with the sambal fish.

Authentic Malaysian/ Sarawakian food. Drove 45 mins to get there and was not disappointed. Rendang beef could've been a little more tender and char kuey teow was a little too salty but it's mostly good.

What a great experience! Good food and nice service. Had the tam yum and roti. Looking forward to going back! Small and cosy. How did I miss this place!!

Get the Lo Mee!. One of the most authentic Malaysian restaurant in the lower mainland (the other being Kedah House, imo). They serve the one East Malaysian dish I craaaave, and have a hard time finding anywhere else- Kolo Mee/Lo Mee. Try it, it tastes delicious, just like back home! And if you want to try more unique noodles, you can try the Lao Shu Fen as well. I don't see it on their online menu, but they always have it when I go. ;)

Home away from home. After frequenting practically all of the Malaysian restaurants in the Lower Mainland BC, I must say this one so far has been close to authentic. We had the Sarawak laksa and found that she is indeed using the same Sarawak laksa that my mom bought in Malaysia and imported back in her luggage when she went for a visit. The roti is just the right texture not dry or hard but soft and flaky. The Lo mee noodles were very tasty and the Ipoh Char Hor Fan was not too bad. Kuih Dadar dessert is absolutely delicious and the crepe is not too thin and not to thick, and very soft like it should be. The filling to crepe ratio was well portioned. Now I know where to go when mom runs out of her laksa paste!!!

Not Bad. Finally made it to this place during its elusive open hours. They are often closed despite the fact that their posted hours say open. This is Chinese style Malaysian food, that is with plenty of pork and other non-halal things. It's not bad. Is it the best Malaysian food I've ever had? No. But it is decent.
Smalltown
Great service, reasonable price but much smaller portion!. I came from Malaysia and heard a lot of great things about this wonderful restaurant! Patronized recently with a group of friends and we ordered a variety of noodles, curries and desserts! I have found the flavor are not as authentic as I had back home. Probably they are unable to find original ingredients in Vancouver? Portion sizes are smaller given the prices. Overall, I would still give 3.8 out of 5.0!

Absolutely fabulous, fresh, flavourful food & without a doubt the best Roti we have ever had, anywhere! The owner was really friendly, attentive & accommodating as well. We will make a point to come back whenever we are in the area. Highly recommend!

Delicious. Found this little gem on urban spoon and we are thrilled that we made the drive from langley. The food was authentic and delicious - don't let the neighborhood throw you off. We love spring independent businesses and the owner says she's been in business for 16 years - clearly she's doing something right! We'll definitely be back!!!!

First time visit to this restaurant with my family. Inside of the restaurant is a bit old but very clean. The restaurant was empty and there were no other customers except 4 of us. But of course there were some customers came to pick up their to go orders.

For your information that they have changed their menu and price. Their new menu has not much varieties as the old's menu (posted pic in Urban Spoon).

My husband ordered Penang Char Kwai Teow and Lo Mein. According to my husband that the food is good and taste exactly like the Malaysian's food in Malaysia. While I ordered Sarawak Curry Laksa and Sambal Chicken. I really like the taste of the curry laksa, although the taste is slightly different from the curry laksa that I used to eat in Malaysia. Maybe it's Sarawak taste and flavour. The sambal chicken is good and tasty but a bit too spicy for me. The chicken meat are crunchy from outside but inside is soft and fresh. Honestly I really loved it the food. Then I ordered Ipoh Hor Fun for my two young kids. They don't really enjoyed the food, maybe because they never eat this kind of food before . I did tried a bit of it and I can tell you this Ipoh Hor Fun is so good. I have been very long time never eat this ever since I have migrated to Canada 6 years ago. My husband also loved and enjoyed eating here. He said he wants to come again next time. Lastly my husband ordered the Ice Kacang (couldn't remembered the exact name in menu). It came in a medium plate instead in a bowl. The ice is too smooth until it melted too quickly and became watery before we managed to eat it. Taste is okay but not great for their ice kacang. Maybe will not order the ice kacang again next for our next visit.

One more thing need to remind everybody that this restaurant only accept cash. Their price isn't expensive but just reasonable. For all those foods that we ordered, we only paid $53++ plus tip of $2. To me their foods are worth for every penny. Definately will come back again to this restaurant.

The food is delicious, the service is great and the place is clean. What more can you ask for? Luv it!

Tell everybody. Another trip to one of my favorite dining spots. Today it was Sarawak curry soup. This laksa or spicy vermicelli soup comes with added prawns, chicken, bean sprouts , omelet eggs, coconut milk and coriander leaves. Did I mention "spicy" but you keep wanting more. All for $8.00 . I will be back and try the Sambal cod fish with bell peppers, onions and tomatoes with coconut rice or Sambal chicken. Give them a try very authentic food.

Best spicy Laksa soup I have ever tasted . This is my second visit here and I will defiantly be back. Remember CASH Only.

Omg what a gem! Food is amazing. I had the curry mee (yellow curry soup with egg noodles) and my partner had the sambal chicken over rice. To start we had the roti with curry sauce - delish! Light and fluffy and a very authentic sauce. The server (daughter of the cook) is so nice. We will be back for sure! Service 5/5 value for your money 5/5 food 5/5

Today I had the sangam chicken and my wife had the fish, I must say it was delicious. It was spicy but enjoyable. I wish I would have had more time but I will definitely be back. The service was great and the lady was very courteous.

Best Local Malaysian Flavours! This Place Has Everything Everyone Would Love!". Came across this place 2 weeks ago with my friends and family.First off, The outlook of the store is not very appealing but once you're in there the service and food is 10/10. I have tried banana leaf , tropika but none of them beats this restaurant. I have tried the Nasi Lemak (Curry Chicken), Loh Mee, Beef Rendang, and curry noodles and they never disappoint! The fried banana is top notch just like any Malaysian would say "sedap" meaning delicious. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone and everyone who wants a taste of Malaysia. The owner / chef is Irene and is really friendly an also a amazing cook. Tell her that i sent you.

Aaron
Fellow Malaysian Food Lover

A few days ago when we were going to Nori Casual, I spotted Malaysian Hut! There aren't many South Asian restaurants in Surrey, but judging from the reviews online, Malaysian Hut is definitely one of the better ones! My dad actually liked Nori so much he wanted to go back LOL, and that rarely ever happens!! And knowing him, he would probably order the same thing... But for blogging purposes, I convinced him to come here instead haha! The restaurant's pretty small, and to my surprise, it was more than half full when we went for lunch!! There was only one waitress serving the floor and one cook in the back, so service was pretty slow haha, which annoyed my dad. He's more of an in-and-out (no, not the burger joint LOL) type of guy when it comes to food! It took us 5 mins to flag down the waitress, and we got our food about 25 mins later, which was faster than I had expected! One thing I really like about their menu is that they have pictures to go with each menu item so you can get a rough idea of what you're going to get before you order! Their menu isn't too extensive (which I like, so you don't have to spend ages deciding what to order), but they have all your Malaysian staples like laska, beef rendang, char kew teoy, bbq skewers, and hainanese chicken! Beef Rendang $10 3/5 stars While all the flavours were on point, the beef was really tough and too lean to my liking. It was hard to chew and rather dry. A little bit of fattiness would have made a huge difference! The sauce on the other hand, was great. It wasn't as sweet or as spicy as other beef rendangs, but the flavours were complex and held their own. All the combos also come with a side of coconut rice! The coconut flavour was strong, and the rice was grainy and fragrant. Sambal Chicken $9.50 3.5/5 stars The sambal chicken wasn't as tangy as I was expecting. It was actually pretty sweet, and

Hailing from South East Asian and having been back on several occasions I find myself craving the cuisine I grew up on and the foods my parents indulged me in. So as a family we drove out to Surrey to try “Malaysian Hut”. This is our second go at the place, the first was on a Monday, only to find out they were closed. The website and the menu listed is really what had us wanting to go in the first place. The food looked authentic and the descriptions sounded delicious, triggering fond memories. It is a small family run business open since 1998, specializing in East Malaysian style cooking. They go so far as to import most of their ingredients straight from their hometown of Miri, Sarawak. Their claim of offering traditional Malaysian dishes that you cannot find anywhere else in the city is accurate. Believe me, I have been on the constant search. No other places I have been to offer Pulut Pangang (sweet glutinous rice with shrimp paste wrapped in banana leaf), Rojak (traditional Malaysian salad), Loh Mee (egg noodles with a minced meat sauce), Kuching Curry Laksa (noodle in soup) and Kuih Dadar (crepe infused with pandan leaves and wrapped with finely shredded coconut and palm sugar). The restaurant was hard to see from the road. We missed it several times rounding the block in our car. The dark of the night and their unlit awning made the restaurant’s name impossible to read. And the small neon “open” sign wasn’t even visible. It also didn’t help that a row of thin pines fenced them and their parking lot away from the street. Because of this we suspect they do most of their business during lunch, when its bright out their restaurant is visible and the surrounding establishments are also open for business. Looking in we were intimated by the empty restaurant before us. Though found it oddly comforting to have a couple come in as we were about to leave. We had called ahead so one table was prepared with cutlery. We walked in and were greeted warmly. Family members ca

An Authenticated Malaysian food restaurant located not from downtown Surrey. It has been operating for more than 5 years. It is small and it is easily missed. They offer main noodle and rice with some dishes you have to order one day ahead.

After Mek’s Delight we wanted to try some more Malaysian food, so our next stop was Malaysian Hut. I brought more friends along this time, so that we can try even more food. We started with the Roti Cani, which had a nice crisp top, but was softer and doughy inside so that it could soak up the delicious sauce. The sauce was a bit thinner here than at Mek’s Delight, but had the same flavours. My friend really likes Satays, so we ordered some Chicken Satays too. It was very tender with a curry flavour on its own, but also came with a peanut sauce (which I can’t have). We ordered another Laksa, but this time it was called Sarawak Laksa. It was a lot different than what Ann was used to. It wasn’t very coconutty. It was a bit spicy and came with vermicelli noodles with bean sprouts, chicken, prawns, egg and tofu. The soup was quite thin too. I liked the Laksa at Mek’s Delight better. Ann’s other favourite dish is Char Kway Teow, which is kind of like a Beef Chow Fun, with thic

The restaurant is very small, and immediately you know it is family owned, because the severs were also doing homework at the next table. The ambiance does have a nice cozy feel to it, and our server was very personable.

The Malaysian Hut Restaurant sure looked much better today compared to what we remembered the last time we were here. It looked like they had just recently painted the inside a bright orange and this gives the place a nice warm glow. There are a few faux Malaysian decor of wood carvings which looked more Thai than it is Malaysian but we had gotten used to it. Many Malaysian restaurants just put up decorations from South East Asia and passing it off as Malaysian because most people would not
