Review Tobiko Sushi - Surrey

Sara Carlyle
I had such a great time here. The sauces are made from scratch (ie: spicy tuna roll. Also the server is extremely kind and friendly. Lots of parking, easy central location. My only qualm is that they didn’t have wild sockeye salmon, but that’s okay I had lots of other stuff to choose from. Delicious! Also very clean.

The sashimi were generous portion and fresh. The sushi we had were delicious. The salmon oshi was my favourite, it was torched and flavourful. It wasn’t very busy in the restaurant when we came for lunch and super cute setting

Vegan options weren't great but super friendly staff!

This is my favorite sushi restaurant to go to. I am usually picky about my sushi but they consistently make amazing sushi. They are also such kind people. I got their early to pick up my order and they stopped to make mine right away, they are always very friendly and kind. 10/10 place!

Was pretty good, sizing of rolls was nice. Good service. Yaki soba was a little dry and not much veggie. Rolls were also kinda dry tasting. Was kinda different but was good.

Never been here before, just got a california roll. Really good.

I was there on June 30, 2022 with my son we ordered, california roll, super tiger roll, and toyko crunch, they were amazing, staff very friendly, service was quick and place was very clean, the prices are very reasonable we will go back for sure!!

I ordered 8pcs salmon sashimi, it came out 1 pc is the side waste, uneatable. I don’t mind you put that kinds into sushi roll, but in slide sashimi? And other pieces are kind of thin. Rolls are very loose, and portion are small compare with other places. My first time and last time.
Yes. We,re Eating Again.
There are two locations of Tobiko so they must be doing something right (of course, here used to be three so...?) This one is at Fraser Hwy and 160th. We waltzed in on Sunday just after noon and were seated right away. The place was quiet while we were there except for a couple of take out orders. There were lots of staff so they must have been anticipating being busier as the day went on. We tried the Tempura Prawns which were crispy and sweet. Nicely done and tasty with a tempura dipping sauce. The Chicken Karaage was the highlight of our day. Tasty and crisp but very tender. With a spicy mayo, this was a generous portion for $7.95.Marie had the Cali / Dynamite Combo which was exactly what you would expect. For $8.50 this seemed like a decent value. I had the Sushi Box at $11.95 which came with 4 pieces of nigiri, California roll, maki and miso soup. The fish was clean and tasty although I found the salmon to be a bit on the paper-thin side. Also, I knew that the Kani would not be real but I kind of wish that they had tried a little harder to fool me. The maki was also fine but a few pieces wanted to fall apart. No big crises.
I find the nigiri option situation a little bleak at Tobiko. Combos with 12 pieces jump up to $20. There is no mid-range option to speak of. Of course, you can also order by the piece. If you do order by the piece pay attention to what you are saying. I asked for one piece of Tamago (why would I do that? ) when what I meant was Massago (sigh). The Tamago was decent. Homey and warm enough with pictures of customers on the walls, everyone was friendly. No complaints to speak of but we weren't blown away either.

I had a craving of Teriyaki chicken, so I was thinking sushi. I have never been here and thought to give it a try. As soon as I walked in, I was promptly seated, given a menu and they took my drink order. Shortly there after my husband joined me and they took his drink order. Once we were ready to order. Our order was taken and shortly there after it came out. We ordered a California roll, Dynamite roll, spicy tuna and salmon roll, teriyaki chicken and mixed tempura. The food was tasty. I will be back again. The only downer was everything came out separately vs all at one, but this is just a minor thing.

My wife and I went here for lunch today, she had a craving, and everything was fantastic. The tables were clean and staff worked efficiently as a team. The Rolls were tasty and tightly rolled which prevents them from falling apart while using chopsticks. I also liked how they plated the Spicy Tuna/Salmon rolls. They were different sizes and arranged like a Castle Wall. The Tempura has a pleasant crunchy batter, not heavily saturated with oil, the shrimp is not rubbery, and the sweet potato/zucchini are the perfect texture and taste great. The Teriyaki Chicken was perfectly cooked, full of flavour and seasoned wonderfully. I am glad my wife chose to come here, we will definitely return again.

Food is average, fun to eat at times, service is great albeit at busy times is a little understaffed, some waiters/waitresses can be a little mean but if you are a frequent visiter, they will recognize you and be nice!

well staff were polite but no courtesy at all. I use to come here a lot but never going back. quality of food had gone down as well. I've asked for wasabi because there wasn't enough to split between three people, I got 3 roles , yam and prawn tempura , and beef teriyaki. got charged extra for wasabi and ginger , wasnt even told that i was going to be charged until I got the bill

This was my go to sushi place in Surrey for a while, but I hadn't been in a few months. The service is still fantastic however the food on the other hand is, unfortunately, terrible. Prices have gone up substantially and you get much less food. For example I ordered a spicy tuna sashimi, it was about half the size it once was months ago, the sushi itself tasted stale/old and was not spicy at all. About 1/6th of the dish was a lemon and wasabi. I loved this place, but I am never going back again.

Tobiko Sushi quickly became my favourite local sushi place. The price is right, the menu is large and it has a fun atmosphere. The staff are very friendly as well as the owner. They have multiple locations throughout Surrey: Fleetwood, Clayton Heights and Surrey (27th Avenue & 192nd Street.). Hand drawn chalkboard. Love all the colours & funkiness.

2nd time here. 1 st time we ate in and everything was great.

This time ordered for pick up. No Wasabi added to 40 pc tray. Tempura sauce spilled every where. Quality of California roll is really bad.

My favourite go-to sushi restaurant! Have been coming here for years, whether it's coming for dinner or ordering takeout they never disappoint! I won't go anywhere else in Surrey!

I love this place! Even though it took us a while to order, the hostesses were so kind to wait till we were ready! Plus, the food was worth the wait! Love it love it love it!!!!

Often when I drive past any given strip mall with a Sushi place in it, you wonder if the quality is any good. When doing this I've been both amazed and disgusted with what I found. Tobiko is somehwhere in between. I couldn't find really anything WRONG with the food (expect the Mango on the volcano roll really doesn't work). I couldn't really find anything RIGHT either. There are other choices nearby that are better worth your time. But if you GOTTA have sushi, this might tie you over.

Amazing food. Service is hit or miss. The Hawaii dragon roll is my favourite! My boyfriend and I try to go here whenever we're in the area.

Extremely disappointed. Horrible food and horrible service. Ordered the gomae and it was terrible and they refused to take it off the bill even though I sent it back right away! Same with the tofu teriyaki. Rude wait staff and terrible sushi, would never go back. Also got body checked by a extremely fat man. TERRIBLE

Luv this place!!!. I often catch myself comparing other sushi places to Tobiko's. Food is fresh with a pleasant atmosphere. A place worth trying.

Good food!. I've been coming here for years now and personally know some of the long time waitresses. I love the laid back atmosphere of the place, especially the fact that they have pics of customers all over the walls and creative drawings as well. The food here is great and there's always a huge selection of rolls to try since they're always creating new ones. Their coconut kisses taste like heaven (I can probably eat 500 of them if I let myself)! This place also does sashimi really well. Pieces are nice and thick and cleanly cut. The only thing I find with the sushi, is that their portions have gone down a bit but prices haven't changed. used to be able to get a platter of the whole roll but now it seems to be maybe around 6 pieces.

Good food and price with a friendly and casual ambiance. I love the special rolls at this place especially the super tiger roll and sexy dragon roll. I like the decor which consists of many photos with customers placed on the walls. Nice casual place.

Service over the phone was really bad, not professional and when I asked her about where exactly she was located she was very mean about it. Food wasn't great at all. I'll still to rokko sushi across the street.

Good food, small cute place. Then came the bill...automatic 15% gratuity when you have a group of 6 or more...only the 6th person in our group was a baby and the other two were toddlers!! Even when i questioned it...nothing but a sorry, just don't tip. So not very happy in the end! I will not be coming here again!!!

Good food, ambiance needs work. Great food. I always come to this local spot for quality food where rolls and sashimi are top notch for the price. Waitresses and cooks are friendly and welcoming and makes me want to come back.

However, The one piece of criticism I have for the resturant is the TERRIBLE music that plays. I'm convinced that they have Bieber and 1D or blatant top 40 music that blares over the speakers. Frankly, if it wasn't for the food I would probably never come back there. Tobiko, if you see this review, try to fix this. A better ambiance for your restaurant will be a definite improvement.

Delicious, fresh sushi! A regular spot for me. Prompt service. I love it here!!

???. I think both their service and foods are great. The previous review is weird, We usually tip 15% if service is fair to average. Anything above average usually deserves 20%, you should pay 15%, whats the big deal?

What the HECK?. The food was certainly okay, not good not bad.
The place is small and crammed, but here is the thing that really put me off.
Friends and I were eating dinner there one night - a part of SIX. YES SIX only and they automatically included a 15% SERVICE CHARGE to our bill!
When did small sushi resturants started charging SERVICE FEE of 15% for a party of SIX!!!!!
Seriously, the service was just okay. (the waitress kept asking us if we wanted the bill when we were clearly not done our dinner and they automatically tag on a 15% service charge!)
My friends and I will be dinning else where from now on. Heck there is another japanese resturant just across the street from these guys

G

My first time here. Place was clean, food especially fresh, tempura was crispy but not greasy, service was pleasant and prompt. I'll be coming here again...

Awful Sushi and Service. The tuna tasted off and had a really bad after taste. As for service, the server was forgetful and always took a long time to correct mistakes. My favourite sushi remains OEC in cloverdale. It is the most amazing sushi with the best employees.
Sarah Taylor
Ya get what you pay for, not good at all. I rather pay a few bucks more and get great tasting food. Do not recommend
Dennis
Not that great... Found a piece of plastic between my california rolls in my lunch box. Could that be a sign of packaged or premade sushi..?
The chicken teriyaki was dry and drenched in this unappetizing sauce.. The rice itself had too much of a vinegar taste to it to enjoy with the teriyaki sauce.. The california roll was pretty normal. Nothing really stood out..
It's a convenient place for my pals and I, and thats probably the only reason why we always come back.
The customer service is horrible. They don't look happy at all when they serve you. They did not say anything after taking our orders, not even a "thank you" or "your food will be ready in ____." Whenever we asked for the waitress, she would stare at us from across the room at the counter, look back as if she were checking on someone, and then come over after a few more stares. It's quite uncomfortable.

And to think I used to like this place. Thought it was great, all downhill I guess
Delia
Sushi is very good. Service not so much. For takeout, if you give a time, have it ready at that time. Pay attention to phone numbers do the order is not 'lost' under a wrong number. This is a bad way to lose regular customers.
Melissa
Good tasting, fresh sushi.. Best sushi I've ever had. Good prices, fresh sushi. Never been sick, eat here often. Tastes great! I recommend the super tiger roll.

Delicious Japanese. I have been frequenting Tobiko ever since it opened and have stayed loyal even through their change of hands. My usual order is the agedashi tofu, and either the cone combo or the spider roll. The spider roll and tuna sashimi is hands down some of the best I have tried. The service is at times a little all over the place (one person might receive their order before the other or appetizers come after the entree), but overall this is a great little sushi joint that I have introduced many people to.

Loved it, tons of stuff to choose from, fast service, great community!
Carly Diack
Quaint, cozy, welcoming, authentic Japanese joint!
Delia
This place is GREAT probably because it is family run, they listen and respond to customers. Most of the menu is listed online now with the exception of the amazing special rolls that are true thinking out of the box. If you go back to standard rolls, they almost seem boring. Service is good and friendly and the food yummy. They usually are a bit short on the soy but that is easily fixed by asking for extra

Their speciality rolls are absolutely fabulous. They give excellent service. The prices are very reasonable. Delious family run !
