I have come here many times and I enjoy the food here. It's always very clean, service is friendly (helps that I know the owner haha) and the food is consistently decent. I usually order the tempura udon with agadashi tofu or some cones or an unagi roll. I haven't been back to the establishment for three years but I have yet to pop in and see if anything new has been added to the menu.

Well, it's hard to accurately rate this place. Having lived all over the lower mainland in the last 15 years and being a real sushi nut, I've tried many many sushi places. As far as the basics, this place is top notch, all the fish is high quality and well prepared. The cooked food is good, but not outstanding. As far as places in the Cloverdale /Langley area this is by far the best.
Now the bad. They are victims of their own success. Usually they have more business and take out orders than they can handle. They are very disorganized and service is typically very poor. What they need to do is get a bigger location and hire a bunch more staff...if they ever manage to figure out the service side, they will get a 5.
Excellent sushi! Cheap, tasty and great service! Very low key with excellent staff. Would highly recommend. Little hard to find but highly worthwhile. Only downside is the small space makes for limited seating.
I found myself out in the Cloverdale Crossing area back in October and decided to stop here for some lunch. If I knew that there were sushi places like Umami Sushi in Cloverdale, I’d spend more time out here. The Wild Salmon Sashimi ($13.50) arrived in 8 pieces. The sashimi was the appropriate temperature and had a firmness to the flesh that you don’t see with the farmed variety. Loved the bright red colour and the clean finish.
A local favorite to enjoy sushi for good prices. The first thing you will notice when walking in is a pleasant atmosphere with friendly staff. It is often very busy during peak times so expect a full restaurant! I come here often with friends and family and we enjoy the food here very much. Over the past few years they have been very consistent with the quality of their food, having good service and attention to detail. They also have a good menu to choose from, varying from creative sushi rolls, udon to their teriyaki. Overall I would highly recommend this place to any sushi lover, it is definitely one of the best in the lower mainland.
This is our "go-to" sushi restaurant in Cloverdale. We've never been disappointed. The rolls are good and the sashimi is fresh. Service is efficient but not overly friendly. We prefer the Cloverdale location to the new one.
Tofu Teriyaki is only 4 pieces. However...they are delicious...

Good everything!! Value, Quality. My family and wife's family eat here about once a week. The staff are so friendly and nice to deal with. They have started to remember our order even, which does fluctuate from time to time but they sure do recognize our basic order!
Pricing has got to be some of the most fair in Surrey/Cloverdale, locations down in Sullivan are just too pricey! I used to work at Tokyo Joes on Broadway and our pricing was significantly better then most places we walk into. But the pricing at Umami is fair and reflects the location they are in. The restaurant is very nice and clean, filled with Japanese décor.
The quality is fantastic, none of that stale faded salmon to be found here! Everything tastes so fresh, and like many Japanese places, the sushi bar is open for all to see. We have never had to complain about mis-matched orders or poor taste. And we are so glad to see they expanded to Langley and are open Sunday's out there, because it is surprisingly hard to find a Sushi joint open on a Sunday in Cloverdale/Langley. But all in all a great deal for great food!
Loved it!. This place has great food. It tasted very fresh, and they gave us lots to eat.
I am very careful where I buy sushi from, but this place is definitely a hidden gem in Cloverdale!

Absolutely Love Umami!!!. One night after work I decided to order sushi, right around their closing time. I ordered a chopped scallop roll, a BC roll & a spicy salmon roll. Unfortunately they were out of spicy salmon, so I had to order the spicy tuna. Upon arriving home later that night, I opened my take-out box to find the sushi looked absolutely delicious. Inside there was a chopped scallop nigiri sushi and my boyfriend and I were in shock... the pieces of the chopped scallop were HUGE!!! It made our mouths water and we both looked at each other wanting to eat it and not wanting to share. We did share it (of course) and absolutely loved that one bite. The chopped scallop roll was also very delicious, and because of this positive experience in taste AND presentation, my boyfriend and I ordered more sushi last night and we were in HEAVEN. The food was once again, outstanding!!!
Great job UMAMI!!!
P.S - if you are someone who hates seafood and raw fish, you will disagree. But anyone with good sushi taste will love it here. (We know what good raw fish should taste like)
Small japanese restaurant in Cloverdale. It's quite hidden in the corner. The decor is very simple but the servers were very friendly ad inviting. The food selection were good. Had great rolls, sushi and sashimi. The price was in the higher end and that surprised me since the location wasn't in downtown. The sashimi were fresh and had good flavor. Will stop by there again if I'm ever in the area.

When we first walked in it was busy and it was a Wednesday so that was a great sign. We looked at the menu and I was debating between a couple rolls (specialty rolls) I went with the volcano roll it was realllly good. My dad got a dinner box. It came with the white noodles in that vinaigrette sauce and miso soup! The dinner box was worth the price.... The only problem was that I got my roll about 15 minutes BEFORE my dad got his box.... So by the time I was finished we still had to wait for my dads box..... But overall was great! Would go back again for specialty rolls!
Yummy Umami!. I've been to countless sushi restaurants in Vancouver and Umami Sushi is definitely one of my favourites! My family eats there 3-4 times a month. I love their special rolls made with brown rice. I will try their purple rice next time.
Nice place in the area.. The restaurant is nicely appointed and the service is rather good. Some of the rolls are rather interesting (the Stinky Roll has a good taste to it with roasted garlic), and the tempura I got was tasty. My main gripe was with my chirashi don, which had rather cold fish throughout.
Good sushi , service great place is clean , should offer green tea in a pot instead of those tea bags I'll be coming back

Great Sushi Nice Atmosphere. This little sushi place is friendly, clean, has excellent service, reasonable prices, nice decor, and delicious food. I make it a point to visit once a week.
For real this is best sushi place ever. I live in Victoria but when I come to mainland this is the only place I got to for quality sushi . Keep up the good work !

Great Restaurant!. SO much to say.. There is so many great dishes to order and they all have their own unique taste in them! Their tempura looks delicious and their special rolls go CRAZY!!! My favourite dishes in this restaurant is their hammachi special, volcano roll, and their pilow rolls! Some dishes tend to be quite spicy, although their special sauces that go on top of these rolls are amazing. The best sushi restaurant I've known.
Before a good night of drinking I had to have some dinner as well I was craving sushi (as per usual) so I got it! Probably not the best choice, but hey it never back fired (score!). I hit up Umami Sushi which was on the way to my friends house so it was perfect! Upon entering Umami it was very busy with take out orders. Within 5 seconds they had cleared a table where they put the take out orders and let me take a seat… for one… lonely sushi dinner for me… When I looked around the room the rolls looked delicious, but I was wanting some Chirashi Don (ever since having it at Shizen Ya in Vancouver I had been craving it… see Shizen Ya blog post for review). The service as Umami Sushi was okay… The Chirashi Don took awhile as I saw some of others peoples food such as a bento box, california roll, and speciality rolls came out before mine and they ordered theirs after… When I looked into the kitchen (as I was sitting right across from it) I saw the chef put my black rice in the microwave so
My friend was craving sushi, and instead of going to our regular sushi joint, I decided to go explore in Cloverdale. When we got to Umami Sushi , it was super busy, clearly a local’s favourite. There are lots of fancy rolls on the menu, but we decided to go for a sushi boat called Love Fan. One of the starters it came with was standard Japanese house salad. Miso soups and also 2 shrimp sunomonos that I wish were a bit more vinegary. A good portion of assorted tempura also came with the boat. And the finally the sushi boat. Which had salmon and tuna sashimi, some nigiri, one California roll, and one dynamite roll. Lots of food for $32 meant to shared by 2. Umami Sushi only uses wild sockeye salmon, which is my favourite. I wasn’t a fan of the tuna sashimis here. They were very bland, and tasted like they had just finished defrosting. The rolls were solid and well made. I was quite hungry when I got to the restaurant, so on top of the boat, I also got an order of Spicy Tuna
