Review Hanako Japanese Restaurant - Surrey

Oh my God so sad to see the owner switch but I hear the chef is going to be the same. The sushi was delicious! The crab salad was something I wasn't expecting and it was super yummy. Their fish was fresh and the chef was super nice. Would definitely definitely recommend everyone to come here at least once.

Hidden Gem Alert! The sushi and sashimi here is of extremely high quality and finesse. It is comparable to high end kaseiki experiences I have had. The rice to fish ratio is perfect. The flavors are clean and balanced. An amazing experience. Definitely a must try sushi place. Talent in sushi making lives here.

Very fresh, great quality fish. Flavour is light and the fish melts in your mouth. The restaurant has a quiet atmosphere and is modestly decorated, which makes for a peaceful evening of low-key dining. Portions are a bit small and pricey, but well-worth for the quality. Menu is limited and varies. Attentive service, tea is always refilled. I would highly recommend the Hanako Chirashi—Regular or Special. The options vary slightly in the quantity and type of sashimi, but both include a satisfying variety in an appetizing presentation.

Really enjoyed our experience. It is a little bit on the expensive side but it was a good date night location! Here are the things we had n thought was good: - warm sake was interesting and not too common. It had a slightly strong alcohol taste when it is warm. - oysters were okay but there are probably better oysters places in Vancouver. - HAVE TO try their chutoro. It was so memorable. But it is indeed on the pricey side. - we had a ume scallop(?) Maki and a negitoro maki and they were both good and cheap. - hasn't tried but every other customer coming in has ordered a chirashi Don. It looked super good but we didn't have the stomach to get it that night.

Awesome place for family dinner! The quality of food was excellent and service was also very nice. I would definitely go back for more yummy Sushi!

Wow this place has fresh sushi. The service was great and the place is cozy. They have GF soya sauce as well.

Deliciously fresh sashimi! Higher end offerings not found in most sushi restaurants. Thank you, Chef Steven!

Very fresh sashimi and oyster! The best sashimi and oyster i ever had in Vancouver. Excellent service.

We googled authentic Japanese food last night and one of the first reviews was this restaurant. We normally hit the Blue Water Cafe in Yaletown if we want premium quality sushi. Now I know I have another option! First of all, they use real wasabi, actual grated wasabi horseradish and not the powdered imitation crap you find it most sushi joints. Secondly, the sushi was not covered in a bunch of sugary sauces like you find in many Korean owned sushi restaurants. The sushi was extremely high-quality. People who are complaining about the quality of this restaurant have maybe never been to Japan, or experienced the joy of different cuts of high-grade tuna and specialized types of fish. Definitely an awesome little restaurant even though it's slightly expensive.

DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS PLACE, VERY VERY BAD QUALITY AND THE OWNER/CHEF WAS RUDE AND NO CUSTOMER SERVICES EXPERIENCE. FOOD WAS DISGUSTING SASHIMI HAD SKIN AND SUSHI HAD NO FLAVOR. VERY EXPENSIVE.

Worst sushi ever!!!! So disappointed, my vegetable tempura was mainly mushrooms, should have been called mushroom tempura. My California roll was very small a cut thin only had 6 pieces, many other sushi places I have been are either bigger pieces or more pieces. My spicy salmon roll was patchy with the rice many blank spots. Overall terrible and I will never be returning not worth the cost. I'm now at McDonald's getting something for my wife and I to fill us up and write this review!

Sushi from heaven. The sushi here was fresh and tasty, their attention to detail surprised me, i must say this is on par with some high established sushi restaurants from Downtown Vancouver. The staff was friendly and it seemed very authentic. Overall I would highly recommend this place, it's a must try for a true sushi dining experience.

I'm not sure why this place has such a high rating which is why I tried it out in the first place. The service is fine but the food is just average. Definitely overpriced for sushi that isn't all that special. I would not return because of the price and average tasting sushi-there are better places in the neighbourhood.
Liked Sushi
If you love yourself, don't go here. Save your money and time and go to other nearby better yummier places like sushi California, sushi train and Guildford sushi. This is the worst possible place you can go to in the area. Servings are small and it's expensive. Like very small... It took them a while to make three rolls... I mean there service wasn't bad but the rolls were bad.. they didn't taste good, they were expensive and they were tiny!!!

Hanako, a small family owned Japanese restaurant is located in a strip mall south of Guildford Town Center. I came here for dinner and was rather turned off by the atmosphere of this place. It was dark, the walls were red, the air seemed stuffy, and nobody was there. Despite all that, I still decided to try it out.

I must admit, I was not expecting this. I've driven past this place namy times only to dismiss it as another generic sushi place. I was so wrong. I love the attention to detail here. The sushi is made with a presentation style that I expect from a downtown fine dining type establishment. There are no "super volcano" rolls here. Just classics done with a eye for quality.

I quick note on pricing, I did find it a bit on the high side. But make no mistake, this is a superior sushi experience for Surrey.

The Prawn Tempura (2 pcs) was a delight with a crispy, light layer of batter and a skinny piece of prawn that had a good snap. The Sweet Potato Tempura had a nice sweet flavour and was cut to the right thickness. The Kabocha Tempura needed a bit more sugar, while the Green Bean Tempura was sufficiently soft and juicy

Horrible customer service.. My colleges and I went for sushi for lunch for farewell get together. They all ordered lunch boxes except me because I had medical reasons. So I ordered misso soup. After 10 minutes the server came to our table and said; if you are ordering only misso soup we can't serve you! ( that was an direction from the owner) I asked the owner of the restaurant why you can't serve me the soup only? He replayed; the utensils, server time, and dish washing cost more then misso soup! So he lost about $50 of order and loyal customers. I will never return to this place!

Top quality sushi. This place is definitely a hidden gem in the town of surrey. The food is a bit on the pricey side but it's worth every penny because the sushi literally melts in your mouth since it's so fresh. Friendly and attentive service as well. I come here time to time when I'm craving for good sushi.

Deeelish!. Went here before a trip to the mall for some Christmas shopping as it had pretty decent reviews. We were more than pleasantly surprised. Looks like nothing special inside...we opted to sit up at the bar so we could watch the chef and he was impressive. Order a few roles and some Bluefin Tuna as well as the dungeness crab salad (after seeing it prepared for another table) and it was fabulous! Worth the drive just for that (we live in White Rock). Everything else was wonderful as well...highly recommend the soft shell crab rolls. Enjoyed the food immensely as we sipped on our warm saki and the service was great too. Chef was friendly and talkative and answered all our questions even though he was quite busy. Will definitely go back!

Fresh and delicious. First time goer but heard good things about this place. Nice and full housed when I arrived. Did a take out of Hank roll, spider, and chop scallop roll. Like how fresh and delicious my food is. Will visit again.

Too expensive. Portions are too small and prices are too high. So many other sushi restaurants out there with better pricing and bang for you buck. Feels kinda outdated. Needs some flare to the menu.

Absolutely hands down delicious! Even the basic California roll is amazing. Love the tuna salad and the tuna gomae is really yummy too. Super fresh ingredients used to perfection. Always ask what's fresh and you'll get the best fish.

WOW!!!. I am from Kelowna, and all I can says wow. Walking in it was empty and seemed a little "dive"like, but after about 30 Minutes it was packed. i invited my cousin who lives in yaletown and he was a little skeptical. This was by far the best real sushi experience I Have ever had. Fresh live Uni, which in Kelowna isn't even possible to try. Some of the best choices for sashimi and nigiri I have ever seen. Absolutely amazing, I don't get to the GVA very often but this place is a must when I am in town. I will be back, and suggest everybody try this place!!!!

Best japanese restaurant in Surrey!!! Price is a bit high compared to other japanese restaurant but its worth it and trust me.. after you try fresh nigiris and salads from here, you will not go any other places!! And service is excellent here too. the crab salad and tuna tataki salad are my favourite. And they are always always fresh whenever i order. Hanako never disappoint me
Bualom B
The best and freshest sushi in Surrey! My favorite spot to go too for uni and amaebi nigiri.

Defiantly more costly than a lot of other places, but their veggie and yam rolls are the by far best I have had anywhere. Every roll I have is compared to theirs in my mind and few ever come close.

Hanako Times. Somewhere deep in the heart of a dark, cold, and rainy Guildford, there lies a small sushi shack. It's warm lights gently piercing through the wooden framed windows. In this place, a chef stands and prepares from a vast ocean of delectable ingredients. My first Chirashi-Don was from Hanako. I've tried it at many other places since and nothing has equalled Hanako, sensational. A bit pricey compared to other places in the area, but there's a reason for everything.

Fresh Fish, Stale Price. Maybe the freshest sushi in Surrey. Not the most expensive, but easily in the top 5. In a city with 5 Japanese places on every street you can do better with less somewhere else.

Over priced for less than ok food. Actually im shocked by the great reviews i read here " like the best sushi place ..." are u serious?!!
Im not a fussy eater and I am not picky and this place is just ok
Waitress was friendly and helpful but the food was not that good!
Even the menu was hand written and u cant tell what to order unless u speak japanese
Crab salad :15.60 & CAD for an explosion of colors with barely an crabs( so mainly u r paying for colors and greens!
I ordered crab motoyaki: nice presentation and good flavor : price is like 16$
I asked for anything special and she said, we dont have special rolls like other places who ise cream cheese or other stuff as we r japanese traditional sushi place! In my mind i said boring !
Sorry guys, i respect ur opinnion but this place is not my cup of tea
( salad, motoyaki, 2 pieces of sushi) 50$ and im still hungry

Little place with fresh seafood items. This place is great if you crave for fresh sashimi and sushi.
We order Live Uni (sea urchin) sashimi, Toro (blue fin tuna belly) torched, Ankimo (goose fish liver), Ika kara age and crab salad every time we go with our guests.
For a party of 6, it is easy to get a dinner bill worth of $320 plus tax.
Great fresh seafood definitely worth the cost.

Quickly becoming a favorite. Just finished our second visit to this restaurant and I'm sure we'll return. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the sushi is very good. The decor is simple but pleasant. Glad to have them in the neighborhood!

Hanako is a very small and hidden restaurant. Wouldnt have known this place existed without the . Everyone Should try their salmon salad. I am salivating just thinking about it. Service is very friendly and attentive. I recommend this place!!!

This is hands down my favourite Japanese restaurant in the Lower Mainland and I have tried a few over time. Don't expect an "all you can eat" menu when you come here or a large restaurant with private booths. What Hanako is about is fresh seafood items carefully and diligently prepared for those who enjoy high end, quality, Japanese food. There is only one Sushi chef behind the Sushi bar and he is also the restaurant owner. He has been serving extremely tasty Japanese dishes now for about 8 years since he opened this small, nice restaurant in Guilford. Since our first visit I have been coming back and brought my Japanese friends to this place when they come and visit. We were never disappointed and our guests were very surprised about the very authentic taste and the artful presentation of the food. Yes, it id true that some items on the menu are higher priced than in some of the many other Japanese restaurants. However, I think the price is very justified for the quality of the food. I have to admit that my wife and I order take-out from another place in Fleetwood when we have a craving for westernized speciality rolls, however when it comes to the quality of the food and the flavour we keep coming back to sit at our favourite Sushi bar spots at Hanako.

Expensive but well worth the price!. The food here is absolutely authentic and it is presented very well. Although the quantity here isn't so great, their quality definitely makes up for it. The service here is really good and the food is delicious as well. However, the only down side is the price. Everything is a lot more expensive than a typical Japanese restaurant, but the food here exceeds the quality of a typical Japanese restaurant too.

I've been eating Japanese food since I was a child growing up in a coastal city with Japanese fisherman. Hanako is hands down the best Japanese food that I've found on the lower mainland. The chef/owner was trained in authentic Japanese traditional food and he also adds very imaginative items to the menu. Try the pressed sushi bars (Salmon battera) with lemon zest and banana leaf or the Enoki mushroom and chicken. When they say "Crab" they mean freshly steamed dungeness crab. Price is CHEAP for what you get. 5 Stars!

Personal Favorite in the Lower Mainland. My family and I have been to scores of Japanese restaurants between Vancouver and the American border. For the first few years when we moved to Canada from Korea, we had been switching out regular Japanese restaurant quite regularly but we've been dining at Hanako for around four years now. It's small and quiet and the atmosphere's nice and laid back. The food is wonderful - I mean, finally, Japanese food cooked by Japanese people (well, the head chef is Korean but he lived in Japan studying Japanese cuisine) - and although the bill can drop your jaw the first few times, I honestly think the quality is quite worth it. I also really liked how they play Japanese music in the restaurant - I seriously don't think K-pop or 103.5 QMFM is fitting for a /Japanese/ restaurant (atmosphere-wise). The staff are extremely friendly and you never have to worry about Hanako being understaffed (something that really irks me ever since I worked in such a situation in a Japanese restaurant). Oh, and also, their "Crab Salad" is to die for :)

* In case that was too tl;dr for you: Food tastes good. Friendly staff. Fitting mood/atmosphere. Pricey but worth every penny. Try the Crab Salad.

Good food that's overpriced. A dinner with 3 people could cost up to 100 dollars here. Their sushi (one piece) costs anywhere between 5~8 dollars. Per piece! Definitely overpriced, yet the food is only slightly above average. Yes, this is without a doubt, the best Japanese restaurant in the area, but Akasaka and Sushi Train should appeal to most people around here, especially the large student body that comes to shop at Guildford.

The following will usually ensue when you tell people about Hanako: your attentive audience will gape at you, aghast, and splutter, “You paid that much for sushi?! Are you outta your mind” To which you will nod in earnest and reply “Ya…but it was so darn worth it,” all the while reminiscing about the wild sockeye salmon sashimi and spicy scallop roll you devoured not too long ago. I kid you not. I went to Hanako with Dad last week for a well deserved meal after a day-long hike in Whistler. The restaurant is fairly small – you can probably squeeze 15 to 20 guests in if the sushi bar seats are included – with a cozy, unassuming interior. We started off with a beautiful plate of Assorted Sashimi : tuna, salmon, tako, and yellowfish. Two words: EPICLY FRESH. Next up were nigiris and rolls to satisfy my rice addiction. For nigiris, we ordered Toro , Salmon, Tuna, Tobiko, and Unagi . Our lovely waitress made a boo-boo and gave us a Chopped Scallop nigiri instead of roll, but she fixed the

This is probably the best sushi in Surrey. Located steps from Guildford Town Centre, Hanako Sushi is a little gem waiting to be found. The restaurant is tiny. The main focus its the food. The freshest sashimi you’ve ever tasted. Hand rolled sushi that’s fresh and delicious. I thought that you have to go to Vancouver to find sushi this good, but I was wrong. This is big city sushi. If you’ve never been here I suggest you order the salmon sashimi. Theirs is wild sockeye salmon and you wouldn’t believe the difference that makes. The fish is firm and has a great texture. Best part is that is consistent. I’ve been here a few times, and I order this dish a lot, and every time this dish is great. Another good dish is the tuna gomae – now traditional gomae has spinach on it, but on this take of the dish, all you get is fresh mahi mahi tuna on a delicious sesame-peanut sauce. So good. The tuna is like butter. I could eat 10 of these. Aside from fresh sushi, Hanako makes traditional Japanese dis

Beau and I love Chirashizushi aka Chirashi don (ちらし寿司), which is basically a variety of sashimi on a bowl of rice. After our trip to Europe, oh boy we were craving for sushi so badly, and a Chirashizushi would totally fi

The spicy tuna roll was perfect. I have been getting used to bland and mildly spicy tuna rolls so this was a pleasant surprise. It was also a good size as well. I really enjoyed this one.

Hanako is a tiny Japanese restaurant in Surrey. This restaurant’s authencity and quality is probably the best in Surrey, and better than most small sushi places in Metro Vancouver. It’s been a while since I’ve been there, so a few nights ago I went in for

The ankimo was my favorite. The liver was spotless, smooth, even color tone throughout, light yellow, sweet and buttery. Without doubt, the best ankimo I've tasted and physically the most beautiful too.
