Review Elizabeth's Chalet Restaurants - Surrey

Nicholas Quintillan
We stopped by this restaurant by “accident”. We had absolutely no idea what to expect. We walked in and it became quite clear. A classic Bavarian style restaurant. The service was quite good, the food was tasty, and overall we had a great experience. This is the type of place that has stayed consistently traditional for decades. If you want a nostalgic experience and a blast from the past, this is a great place to experience what dining in the mid-eighties at a Bavarian restaurant would have been like. Try them out.

We didn't even get to eat in due to current conditions, but we had a fantastic dinner take out for my wife's birthday. I had the bratwurst and she had cordon bleu and we were very satisfied. The portions were so big, we have potatoes and slaw for leftovers! The quality of the food was delicious and very filling. Can't wait to go back and eat inside, as the interior looks very well maintained and has great character.

Our craving for good, old-fashioned Germanic fare was amply satisfied by the Combination plate which features schnitzel, bratwurst, rouladen, spaetzle and red cabbage. The chalet's interior is well appointed with wood features which are reminiscent of earlier times and the servers were attentive and friendly.

We both enjoyed wonderful and delicious Schnitzel dinners which were served in generous portions. We also enjoyed a well-priced carafe of wine. The atmosphere was comfortable and not loud so that we could actually have a relaxing conversation. The service was good and unobtrusive. Overall good food, good service and good value for our money - we will return for a dinner in the future.

Delicious goulash soup and schnitzel in a Hawaï style. Big portions and nice staff! 😊 Very clean restaurant ! I hope to come back soon! 🤩 Petra

Ate here yesterday and was blown away with how delicious the food was. I am still in awe. We had the lamb curry, chicken tikka, veggie dish and dessert. All of it was cooked to perfection. The restaurant is clean and the service is very friendly. I highly recommend and will be back.

We went to celebrate a special birthday. The food and service was wonderful. The schnitzel dinner was as tasty as it had been before the restaurant had changed names. The service was courteous and friendly. I would recommend this restaurant for any event.

The food and service were absolutely fantastic! It had been a while since we had been here.. and I don't know why. If you enjoy wine with your meals, they're pricing is very reasonable. But the star of the game is their food.. the schnitzel, rouladen, speztl and potatoes are out of this world. Definitely adding to the bring out of town guests and special occasions restaurants! Wife had the veggie schnitzel and it was good too...who knew!

This restaurant is amazing. From the ambiance that truly makes me feel like I'm in Europe, to the true European owners, to the portraits of people from history to the food that truly reflects the culture. This place really makes me feel like I'm in the olden times. I will be honest and say that a few of the portraits are a little creepy and so is the lighting, but the overall experience is really interesting.

A disappointment for Valentines. Restaurant was over-crowded and over-booked. Tables were crowded together. It was like being seated at the same table with strangers. No seating for those waiting and crowded reception area with a cold breeze due to door open to outside. Wait staff was overwhelmed and the food was underwhelming. Some people left due to seating arrangements. Always enjoyed our experience here under former management but won't be back.

We used to go to this restaurant on a fairly regular basis, but after our latest experience we will not be back.

Do not go to this restaurant during December when large parties are booked. They can't handle it and lack the service skills to gracefully wing it.

Our meal took almost 1.5 hours to arrive. Food was cold, very poor quality as if we were getting the leftovers from the large party that had ordered before us. When we complained both waiter and manager gave pathetic excuses and offered nothing in return for the bad meal.

We've been going to this restaurant for almost 15 years - we don't expect special service, but the way the manger handed our concerns shows they do not value loyal customers. His lacklustre response to our complaints means we will NEVER go back. What a shame.

We've been regulars at Elisabeth's for a few years now, but sadly that has ended as of this evening. After a completely awful experience, we will not be back. Please be aware that if you choose to dine at this restaurant, as a family, on a night when they've taken booking for large parties, you will be treated as though your business is of no consequence. We arrived promptly for a 7:15pm reservation, had to wait to be seated, and it then took over an hour and fifteen minutes for our starters to arrive (two of which were cold salads). While we were waiting, we asked for bread (why should we have to ask?), and were brought a basket containing - I kid you not - three small slices, when there were three of us dining. No sooner had we each taken our tiny slice when the basket was whisked off the table by the busser. It was intrusive and rude. After our starters, it took a further half hour for our entrees to arrive (I guess we should consider ourselves lucky, as a group that ordered just before us was still waiting....). When they did, they were terrible - my son's steak was medium rare, not medium, and the sides were too aggressively seasoned and so virtually inedible. He left half his plate. My goulash was lacking meat of any description, and what chunks there were were comprised mostly of fat. I hardly touched it. My husband's prime rib was supposed to be medium - and was instead well-done and tough. Incredibly disappointing, and the salt in the wound was being told "sorry", with a shrug, and yet another comment about there being large parties in the restaurant.

You know what, management? Perhaps, if you can't manage to satisfy both casual diners AND large parties on the same evening, don't take so many bookings? Either take fewer large parties, or fewer regular reservations. It's completely unfair to leave half your diners waiting, and serve them in a substandard way, all so you can offer top service to big tables. Our experience was not unique on this evening - tables all around us were endlessly waiting, and many customers had complaints about the quality of the food (the table next to us had also ordered the prime rib, requesting it be cooked medium rare, and he also received a well done piece of meat).

There's simply no excuse for an evening like this, and not a single customer who had a bad experience this evening could be blamed for feeling upset and disappointed. I can typically forgive any restaurant an "off night" when they're doing their best, but not when a shambolic evening is a direct result of the restaurant's greed. They simply cram as many people as possible into the restaurant and then hope that their clumsy apologies will be enough to compensate for the poor service and awful food that results. Well, it's not. EVERY customer deserves the best possible service, food, and experience, and if a restaurant can't offer it then vote with your feet - and your dollars - and take your business elsewhere.

This truly was an awful experience, on what should have been a special evening (hint to management - not everyone celebrating a special event books a large party!). A horrendous wait, bad food, and the mediocre response from the manager has all but guaranteed we won't be returning.

We have been coming here to have a fine meal for occasional family birthdays.
The food is very consistent, rich and the menu has numerous favoured German dishes which are comfort food in many ways. This time I had Spaetzl Nordsee. It was very tasty with a cream sauce and a mix of seafood. I would have added a colour accent with a piece of broccoli or red pepper or tomato. O find colours rather appetizing. My mom ordered the seafood crepes. They were excellent except that the filling very pasty, lacking textures.
Service was very good as always.
Ambiance can be noisy when crowded. Decor is very European.

This place was very busy and we were definitely the youngest people in the restaurant (late 20s). Granted, it was around 5pm so it was an early dinner for us. The portions were large and I definitely had leftovers. The waiters were very attentive. Overall it was a good experience.

Elisabeth's is a traditional type restaurant, old school floral decor, and usually older clientele. Not exactly a night spot, definitely somewhere I'd be more likely to go with a parent.

That being said, the food is very good quality, and the service is excellent. The schnitzels are large and very tasty, and the steak is always perfectly flavoured and cooked, served with crisp vegetables and cabbage. Definitely somewhere I would recommend.

You'll feel transported back in time when you dine at Elisabeth's. From the servers to the dessert display cabinet, it's as if you stepped into a high end restaurant circa 1980s.

The food is good. Whenever we want old school comfort food, we go to Elisabeth's for schnitzel. I love their red cabbage and potatoes. The service is great- attentive without hovering. The prices are affordable.

Just know that if you're looking for innovative exciting modern fare, this isn't the place for you. But if you want schnitzel with spaetzel and cabbage, you'll love Elisabeth's.

A must go. Great food for affordable pricing. Still a favourite under new ownership.

No knowledge of German Food. II have been to this restaurant a long time ago and it was good however last night was a not up to expectations. Always like a side of cucumber salad like you can get in Germany.... the cook should have looked it up quickly on line to find out what this is. Cook got it completely wrong. The German version of Hungarian Goulash soup is always very similar wherever you have it in Germany..... the soup served here was not the traditional soup but rather a sort of beef minestrone. Again checking out the traditional recipe would be a good idea. If you are trying for German food than it is wise to do the research and find out what these traditional dishes taste like. The spatzle was not tasty and needs some help to get it right. There are other German restaurants in the lower mainland that get it right so if you cannot take a trip to Germany than go for several meals at other well known German restaurants and experience the taste and look of the foods that you are trying to create.

There should be a manager available. If there was, maybe the staff would be on better behavior. I watched an older blonde server making rude comments at another server who was trying to figure out her cash out. Apparently the rude server wanted to close up and leave, and she didn't want to have to wait. I won't ever be back to this place. It was disgusting behavior, and soured me on the whole experience.

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!!. This restaurant was Sold about 2 months ago.
they are Expensive, the Service is slow, Unfriendly, The waitress is wearing Dirty Clothing!!
The Schnitzel is Dry and i have inside information on it it is DEEP FRIED!!!
When I have not tipped the waitress, she turned so Ugly that it was embarrassing!
Many people still think it is the Original ownership there and that is the reason they still going to this DUMP!!!
Even their bathroom should be checked out for the ladies!!!

Slow, overpriced & poor food quality. My family went there last night for a special occasion.
It was very disappointing to wait close to 2 hours for the food to arrive. If it hadn't been a special occasion that we didn't want to spoil we would have left. This is also why we didn't want to complain or make a big deal at the time even though we were all frustrated and hungry!.
The schnitzel portion was large but very dry... Served with 2 sad pieces of overcooked asparagus and 2 ok prawns on top... The side dish was some sort of noodle... Also dry and looked and tasted burnt... One side of the noodles were actually black...I can't believe they served it this way! The other side was vegetables exactly 1 broccoli floret, one cauliflower floret and a couple carrots...My husbands dish was the same...by the time dinner came it was so late no one wanted dessert or coffee and who could afford it with the price of dinner anyway..
Others had prime rib which seemed a better choice... However it was not on the menu and so you had to ask about it...which we only knew because some people had been there previously....
We had been here quite some time ago and remember the food and service being really good( despite the outdated chalet decor)...this was a big change and with so many other options we won't be back....but the place might make for a good episode of kitchen nightmares....

Once was a great hidden gem. Interesting twist to customer service , Had a reservation ,but not in the book ,and not busy [4 others in this side wing of the restuarant ] , and were placed in the corner next to bathrooms . When asked for a different table we were reluctantly moved one table away . The hostess was most indignant that we would want a different table. We had had a nice meal there before so thought we would stay . The waitress arrived and stated "Oh two at a table set for 4 ."The table we were to sit at was also set for 4 .

Way over priced at $22.00 for a Schnitzel in a very dated , doubt we will be back as there is so many more choices in the South Surrey area .

Understand there has been a change in ownership , come on new owners, don't spoil a proven eatery!

Elisabeth's Chalet. Your review of this restaurant requires that you go back and do it right. It was our 54th wedding Anniversary and every thing was great and one of the few places in the area that has "chateaubriand" on the menu.++++

You can't get any better than this: best schnitzel house in Vancouver!. We have been coming to Elizabeth's for years and LOVE it!!! I worked in a schnitzel house alongside a swiss chef as a young adult and know what great schnitzel and it's accompaniments are all about. The weiner schnitzel, the spatzle, the pan fried potatoes, the purple cabbage and all the variations... YUM! Elizabeth's has a great menu, amazingly low prices on both food and alcohol, is spotless and treats it's customers - especially return customers - very well. Even the quirky decor feels authentic. The waitstaff are longtime employees and know their customers surprisingly well (one even remembered what kind of wine I had last time I was there, and they always remember our names and what we usually order - I have not encountered this at any other restaurant).

As a frequent customer, I am surprised to see comments on this site about high prices (seriously? this place is a great deal) and changes in service and quality since the change in ownership. I wonder if these opinions might have racist undertones. I honestly have not noticed any change in the quality of food or service and the prices are exactly the same. The waitstaff and chef are the same. The new owner/host is gracious, welcoming and recognized us and welcomed us back on only our second visit after taking over. He is absolutely lovely and yes, quite a change from Elizabeth (who was the embodiment of "schnitzel house"! We miss her).

This is seriously fantastic, authentic German schnitzel in a very comfortable atmosphere and at almost unbelievably low prices. Please don't change a thing!

Great food, I'm German and I went there with my wife and daughter, great Ruladen and my wife had Schnitzel. Great service as well, same price as Keg but it comes with a unique atmosphere, I like that place!

Decent presentation. Comfy atmosphere but overpriced for the quality and portion.

The Worst Service EVER.. For anyone who has been there before and has loved the staff, you have to know they've switched owners.

The new owners are terrible. The food is awful and overpriced and the service is disgusting.

What used to be a family favorite is now relegated to sighing and "what used to be's" when we drive past.
I hope the new owners are happy they are tarnishing a great name, but I doubt they'll be in business for long.

Excellent food. This is a great place for dinner. Family run for a long time. Always packed and the food is very gpod. Service is excellent. Great value. Earlybird prime rib is also good

We finally got to have a 2-on-1 dinner with Master Food Blogger Sherman and decided to check out Elizabeth's Chalet in Cloverdale. Upon stepping in, we saw what we were getting ourselves into. The clientele is mainly t
