Review Magnum & Steins - St. John's

Not fussy. We had reservations at 7 but we're able to get in at 645 and take advantage of the happy hour specials. She ordered a Starburst martini while I sipped on a long Island ice tea. We ordered appetizers, duck confit nachos and the potato skins. They tasted great but the nachos were quite small and the potato skins are literally 3 halves of potatoes. Pretty sure we were the youngest people there besides the servers, the next youngest person after myself looked to be 15 years older. We felt very out of place. The menu was also minimal but didn't have so many options different outside of most restaurants locally. The meal of two drinks and two appetizers came out to about $50, the drinks were as expensive as the aps. Their wine menu was quite extensive except we aren't wine drinkers so this probably isn't the place for us. I don't think we'll be returning any time soon, there is literally nothing else on their menu I would like to try that I can't have anywhere else.

My partner and I enjoyed dinner at Magnum and Steins last night and it was fantastic. We had the duck nachos to start which were highly recommended by friends and they did not disappoint, definitely the highlight of the night! For mains I had the fish of the night, which was a cod dish. The dish was prepared very well. My partner had the pasta of the night, which was a chicken based pasta dish which was quite good! For desert we had the chocolate flourless torte which was superb. Our server Laura was friendly, helpful but a bit slow at points, however she had many tables. She gave us great recommendations, and even surprised us with our mains and wine pairings. The restaurant was clean, and the atmosphere was intimate. Would recommend

This restaurant has sadly gone downhill. We went there for our anniversary. This was perhaps my 6th visit to the restaurant over the years. We started with their signature fish soup. We always had this to start. It was bland at best.we also ordered wings. Again very rubbery and uncooked. I told the waitress but she didn’t really care how I felt. It costs us over $10 for 5 small wings. We were looking forward to their signature strip loin but they took it off the menu. We had their fish and chips. It resembled frozen fish sticks from the grocery store. We always liked going here as it was a medium to high end restaurant but now it’s merely pub grub and it don’t even aspire to that bar. I’m sorry have to post this but I was extremely disappointed. Hopefully they will improve for their sake.

Probably the worst experience I’ve had in dining. We had reservations for 7:30 tonight and we were still waiting at 9:15. We did receive our appetizer of wings after about 70 minutes, but they were quite tough. The table behind us came in about 8:30 and were eating by 9:05. We got up and left. I didn’t want to be eating steak at 9:30 in the night. In their defence, they did not charge for the appetizer and gave us a gift card. That’s why I’m giving them 2 stars instead of 1.

If you are coming to St John’s NL you must stop here for dinner. The drinks were heavenly and the food was divine! We had the beef tenderloin and the rack of lamb and have never tasted anything better. Thank heavens the “Keg” was booked up because this place was so much better. Try the Tiki Tia martini- it was amazing. It’s best to call early for reservations to ensure a table as space is limited. Ask for Griffin- he’ll take good care of you.

Would recommend, kinda pricey for some of the dishes. Extensive wine list. Lots of mixed drink choices. Had a nice stop for a beer and some quick food on the patio. Wait staff are quick, warm, polite and coordinate well. Started with a little complimentary bread and salted maple butter. I had housemade fettuccine pasta on a light tomato sauce with fresh basil, parm and olives topped with a properly grilled chicken breast - Yum! The fish soup was a miss, long on seafood (good), short on flavor (not so good), maybe they could try a more traditional fish soup next time. It was properly cooked, I just wasn't into the recipe. Have eaten some of the pub grub here before which was tasty. As someone else has mentioned, they have a very active set of specials which is great. Would recommend a visit.

My favourite place to eat when I am in town. The service is great and the food it top shelf. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere in the lower section is the best.
