Review Duke Of Duckworth - St. John's

Kenneth Green
This restaurant has some of the best fish and chips I've ever had. They're so delicious. The service is quite good and friendly! And the location is so cool! The only downside to this otherwise perfect visit, is that the portion sizes have shrunk a lot.

Stowed away at the juxtapose of Duckworth Street and McMurdo's Lane, The Duke of Duckworth is a famous haunt, and I knew not how famous until I read rave reviews about its fish and chips and its exclusive use in the local show, Republic of Doyle. Fame apart, the Fish and Chips lived up to its hype, the fish almost melting in your mouth. We also tried honey garlic wings, which was done pretty well too. Didn't get to try the booze, will update once we go back! Prices are on the higher side though, buoyed by the hype, I believe? The atmosphere is quaint and refined, like polished old wood. Retro music plays in phases and completes the vibe. There's a few slot machines and a billiard board around. When we went at afternoon, the place wasn't crowded at all. They always have some specials on offer, up on display right where you enter from. Service is prompt and good, albeit due to the low occupancy, I believe. The waiter made us a fair recommendation about what to try at the Duke's, since we went there for the first time. Will go again!

I went to this place during my first visit to NL. I loved the fish and chips there. The fries were so fresh. I had it with dressing and gravy. Highly recommended đź‘Ť

Ate here on the recommendation of our St. John's Walking Tours guide, who told us this is the best place in the city to eat fish and chips. Although I cannot say if this is true, I can confirm that my family loved the fish and chips here. In particular, my son--who adores fried fish--told me that Duke's served the best fish and chips during our 1 1/2 week long trip in Newfoundland.

In town for work and needed a place to eat/unwind after a lengthy layover in Halifax. So went on a recommendation from a buddy. The place was used for Republic of Doyle for sone of the bar scenes so it was cool to be in a pub used for a show. Menu was decent and since I can’t have fish I went with the traditional club. Delicious. Also I had a local pint and it was great. Don’t remember which one but I enjoyed my meal and drink. It was also cheap drafts so when we got there the place was packed but eventually it emptied out quickly when the happy hour was over. Place could use sone better lighting and seating but when you’re at the bar it doesn’t matter. Great chats with the servers/bartender.

The Duke is a really authentic irish pub located a few blocks from the local action on Water/George. We stopped in for dinner and drinks on Sunday night. Our server was friendly and patient with our questions and we got to know her as the night went on. The pub itself has great ambience and decor and the bartender was also friendly. We ordered a caesar and a pint of Murphy's stout, both really good. We shared the chowder, a piece of fish, and the hot turkey sandwich. The chowder was chock full of cod and has a lovely, herby cream base. The fish was probably the best we tasted in NL after having sampled 5 other places; not greasy at all, light and crispy batter, moist and meaty cod. They win this round for sure. The turkey in the turkey sandwich was tasty and moist, but that was all that was between the bread. The bread was smothered in the gravy so it all got a bit homogenous. The fries were good, but again you have to be a fan of soggy fries to enjoy. The dressing did not add anything, and I'm confused by this local menu choice. Note that the kitchen is only open till 8pm, so plan ahead. I'm glad we did!

The fish and chips was fantastic, best I've ever had. Cod chowder was honestly awful (tasted of nothing but dill). Don't expect service with a smile here. No one seated us or even let us know to seat ourselves. Our server was clearly annoyed and chucked silverware on the table for us to distribute. The woman who brought our food was equally short-tempered. Prices are on the higher end, and the place was absolutely packed, but worth it for the fish and chips.

A cool pub with slot machines and interesting esoteric decor. A great place to grab a local pint and the fish and chips are some of the best I've had in Newfoundland.

My hubby and I were visiting St Johns at the beginning of August. I was lucky enough to get a bowl of the seafood chowder on my first night there. We tried to get there in time the next night to have it again but they had sold out, so we tried the turkey soup which was also delish. We also had fish and chips and the batter was so light and fluffy. But that seafood chowder will haunt my dreams until I get to go back!

Best fish and chips we’ve had so far in Newfoundland! So freaking light and fluffy. Dressing and gravy was also aces. Was a little on the pricey side (beer seemed like a lot) but not too bad. Atmosphere is classic pub. Definitely worth a stop!

Excellent fish and chips ! Best fish and chips we have had In a long time !! It's real fillets of cod battered and fried so not perfect looking but the taste is incredible. The dressing and coleslaw were perfect editions on the side. Lots of beer on tap and service is fast. We really enjoyed it !

OMG! This place has the BEST FISH 'n CHIPS that I have ever had! Great atmosphere and service. The waitresses are amazing - friendly and attentive. The fish is spectacular. I have to say that the portion of chips is pretty hefty so I would suggest asking for half chips/half salad. It'll make you smile.

Best fish 'n chips ever. Great pub atmosphere. Prefect spot for a first trip to St. John's.

Fish and Chips. Our group of 5 Winnipeggers had the one piece of fish (which in Newfoundland and Labrador means cod) and chips with cole slaw. (one piece is sufficient unless you've been doing hard, physical labour all day). And beer, some of it lager, some of it ale, all of it cold and delicious. The cod was perfect - firm, flaky, in a slightly crispy, not at all soggy crust. If there is such a thing as perfect fish and chips, the Duke has it. Great, efficient and friendly service.

Oversold F+C reputation but great pub.. The speed served; over soft (soft not tender) and colour all lead to reheated food! Don't kid yourself its not freshly cooked.<br/>St John's is great f.r food but this ain't it........ I will be back for the pub though. Eat at Riley's and come here for the pub.

My wife and I went to the Duke of Duckworth for a late lunch while on vacation in St. John's in early July. The pub was completely full when we arrived except for one table which we promptly sat at. We both ordered the fish and I had mine with Greek salad and my wife had hers with chips. The fish was cooked perfectly and was FANTASTIC!!! We highly recommend the Duke for a delicious casual lunch, and to top it off the service was excellent, too. We will certainly come back if we're ever back in St. John's.

Great place!. Best fish and chips on the island. Avoid happy hours unless you get there early. It's packed with patrons sipping one of many unusual varieties of brew. A must for lunch. One of our favourite places during our stay.

Amazing fish and chips, the amount of food you get is definitely worth the price. Wouldn't go anywhere else for the value of this place is excellent! Lots of different types of beer on tap as well!

It seems that the fish and chips are quite highly regarded at the Duke of Duckworth so I decided to give it a try. The two pieces of deep fried cod were so light and flakey with almost no hint of fat. This fish was super fresh. The fries were good. Not the best I’ve had but certainly not the worst. All in all this was better than any fish and chips I’ve had in this city….actually
