Best place in Spruce Grove for fish and chips. Plus, the clam strips are delightful.
Also, everyone needs to try the deep fried pickles with tarter sauce.
Savoury and melt in the mouth goodness is how I describe this place to friends and loved ones.
Ordered delivery for dinner New Years. First time ever trying Docherty's. The owner new we were first timers and gave us significantly more food than expected so we could try other things. Awesome service and the food was on par. The only thing we thought missing was tarter sauce and cocktail sauce. Just as we sat down to eat, someone else rang the doorbell. They had missed it when they sent the delivery, so they sent someone else with it! Very impressed. They even included malt vinegar as well as jam for our fritters.
The fish is lightly breaded, crispy, and not greasy. All you can eat fries that are delicious! Great prices for good quality food! Love it here :)
We got takeaway form hear, and even though it sat wrapped in newspaper for the drive home the batter was still nice and crisp the fries where good and hand cut. Both our clam strips and fish where cooked nicely not dry. I would not get the halibut again, you just don't get the nice batter to fish ratio that you do with the cod. thought the fish was a little under seasoned but once you take a bite with the tarter sauce, it is very nice. going to come back and eat in store in the future.
Amazing!!. Absolutely phenomenal food. The fish is cooked perfectly, the batter is light and crispy. The corn fritters are perfect!!! I will definitely bring my friends and family here. Just wish I hadn't eaten so much, so I could try the deep fried mars bar.
Great British Food. Docherty's is a great place to go! We have been there 4 times in the past year, and everytime we have gone we have had great service, and the best fish and chips! Hot, crispy and how you want them to taste. The prices are reasonable. I prefer going there over any other place, way better prices and food than the chain fish and chip shop.
THE BEST. I never write reviews, I prefer to tell the owner what I find wrong with their place when I am there eating the food. That way it can be rectified there. Writing a review is the cowards way out. Anyway here goes. I have been a customer of this restaurant for years and as long as I can remember, I still am. This is a family restaurant, if you are looking for great decor you don't come here, its rustic furniture has been here for 30 years it was custom made by the original owner and its solid can support anyone. Its typical olde english style fish and chip restaurant/take out. If you've ever been to england you know why i mean. But the food is fantastic everything is cooked great, its, remember now deep fried. So duh your goin to get some oil on your plate. Its well drained, never had oil on my plate. Take outs are wrapped in the traditional way in plain paper & newspaper. Reason for the newspaper, in england again its traditional - want to get away from tradition? go to Joey's you can't get more away from tradition - its Canadian - its frozen chips and frozen fish - mmmm yummy can't wait to get a plate of that as opposed to Dochertys fresh fish and home made daily cut fresh chips, you can taste the difference, potatoes are locally grown and bought. I know these things, I should, its my job I work at a top restaurant in edmonton as a chef, yet do I eat at the Keg, Sawmill ---no. Docherty's because I know its fresh, ask the owner for a look at the machinery at the back where they do your chips daily - I rest my case, I know where I will eat, I live in Spruce Grove - next time you take out, ask for a take out box, your fish and chips won't be soggy, that's the way they eat them in england (never go there you won't fit in) - oh they cook your food in Canola Oil, I believe we grown that here and its supposed to be nutritional.
This place used to have the best Fish and Fries but now the Fries aren't the same. But the Fish is still great.
This place has been in business for along time. Loved it. Until things changed. The fries are not the way they use to make them. That's very disappointing. Fish is great! Change the fries back and I am sure more will return. Why ruin a good thing?
Not bad, but polish would help.. I really get the sense that this place used to be pretty special but over the years may have lost some of its charm. It certainly has the basics right, but maybe the execution needs to be examined:
I ordered one piece of fish, got my piece of fish, and enjoyed my piece of fish. But why are there so many fries with it? I had easily 2 1/2 times the portion of fries over fish. It's disparaging to deal with that much deep fried potato at once, 1 to 1 ratio would be about perfect. They have to be aware of how much fries either leave the building or go in the garbage, let's be honest, nobody wants to eat day old re-heated fries. People just take them because they feel responsible for them, not to eat them. All of that is money wasted, which could be spent to buy better vegetables instead of more.
I don't regret going, but if the owners want the charm and beaming reviews back that effort has to come from the top.
Awesome Service. Checked this place out the other night. It was delicious. Very friendly and commical staff. We showed up right at closing (didn't realize it) and the door was still open. We asked if they were still open and they happily took our take out order. The fish was hands down the best I have ever had and the portions are huge! Will definitely go back again.
Been lovin' it for years. I've lived in spruce for 26 years and always recommend this place. We've been going for my whole life, was so happy when my mom would come home with paper bags filled with greasy bundles of newspaper wrapped fish, chips, and corn fritters.
I will continue going as long as it's open! The service can sometimes be a bit off putting but it's worth the food!
