Fish on Fifth knocked it out of the ballpark at last night's Victoria Gluten-Free Foodie Meet Up. Their menu is the work of a savant with every possible gluten-free and vegan permutation plotted. Server Talia was able to answer every question, suggest combinations not offered on the menu, and cater to our every seafood whim. She was intimately familiar with all of Fish on Fifth cross-contact measures. It is safe to say that owner Amanda has thought of everything! I enjoyed the best deep-fried oysters ever and words are not sufficient to describe the deep-fried onion rings! The rarest of treats for a celiac. All of our meals were superb. Fish on Fifth has made it onto my personal favourite restaurant shortlist and is proudly listed as a recommended restaurant by The Celiac Scene. Please give them a try!

Our family had dinner here on Canada Day. I was really excited to try the new veggie burger made with The Very Good Butchers own vegan burger patty. I was not disappointed. It was amazing! They even have vegan cheese and sauce to compliment the burger. I devoured the whole thing and can't wait to go back for more. Other members of the family had the cod and chips and were very happy as well. The batter was nice and crispy the fish was tasty and fresh. The little one in our family had chicken strips and fries and loved that as well. Staff were all very pleasant and service was prompt. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a tasty and well priced family meal.

I went with a friend and had the special vegan burger with pineapple and peppers. It was amazing. I brought one home to my non-vegan partner and he absolutely loved it- said it was the best vegan burger he'd ever had, which hurt my feelings a little, but anyway. Glad he liked it. Thank you for not just being accommodating to vegans, but offering some of the best, creative vegan food around. I've had the beyond burger in lots of places in Northern and Southern California, and yours was the best by far. Service was great and friendly. I really wish I lived closer.

Love the decor. The service was outstanding, from staff that so obviously care about their clients. I had the two-piece cod meal which came with fries and coleslaw. It was probably the best fish and chips I've ever had. Lots of gluten-free and vegan options! Very creative manager! I will definitely return.

Just had a fantastic VEGAN dinner dessert included! It could not have been a more perfect experience! I was expecting one vegan dish but instead they had loads of options including chocolate cake!! Excellent customer service from the servers and fantastic customer service from chef Chelsea! I can't wait to go back and try everything else that's vegan on the menu!! We had the plant based fish burgers, the not cod and chips, salads (which were chalked full of colourful veg), deep fried artichokes, and portobello mushroom and finished with the chocolate cake! Yes I know we ate a lot of deep fried goodness but we did some intense paddle boarding before hand thanks for the excellent dinner Chelsea and the Fish on Fifth crew!!! We will see you again soon! Roxie, Boomer, and Jill :)

Amazing! I came all the way back here for the second time now. Last time I had the vegan Big Mac which was really good and this time I heard they have the beyond burger patties and I couldn’t believe it! So I tried the burger and it was AMAZING! They also have vegan desserts! Took home two delicious looking cupcakes ! Service is a bit slow but I wasn’t rushed so I really don’t mind, because otherwise the waitress we had was great! Thanks for having great tasting vegan options!

This is our first time in Sidney..we asked the lady at the hotel we are staying in where is the best place to get fish and chips and she said without a doubt, Fish on Fifth..it was SO good. I had the cod and it was the best I've ever had. The Halibut was also delicious, nice and light. We will definitely be back and will recommend to anyone we know coming to the Island to make a stop here!! Also the service was great!

A popular Sidney fish & chip shop also serving delicious vegan options...? Who woulda thought?? Yep that's Fish on Fifth and it's becoming quite renowned for its side-by-side menus, offering both plant-based food and fresh-off-the-boat seafood.
Decided to give this place a whirl after cycling out from Westshore and hearing so much buzz on social media. I've been transfixed by the vegan metamorphosis taking place here, a humble family-owned restaurant that's been a prominent fixture in downtown Sidney for over 20 years...
It was lunch rush and the place was busy with eat-in and takeout. I was promptly seated by a friendly server and given two menus, one of them the "secret" vegan menu. She told me they will happily convert any dish into vegan. Mmmm omnivore options. So they are making two kinds of the same dish: one traditional, one plant based...?
That’s a big feat. This I gotta try. I ordered the No-Codfather Burger. It arrived looking impressive with two beautifully golden "fillets" on a soft squishy bun topped with homemade tartar sauce, fresh lettuce, tomato and pickle, alongside a rainbow of a side salad. At first glance you wouldn't even know it wasn't fish. One bite and yummo! The burger is absolutely delicious. Like a filet o fish burger should taste. Kudos to the chef for replicating the cod texture and perfectly crisp beer batter. It's a good size too - I was hungry and barely finished my meal. Prices are reasonable too (about $13).
I was told one of the owners is a vegan chef and constantly experimenting in-house with plant based ingredients, hence the always evolving menu and creative specials (see Facebook and Instagram for updates!). Her omnivore menu is becoming more well-known as word spreads, but "the boss" is already an icon in the vegan community. She has added the famously popular Beyond Meat to her burger menu. And her newest addition? Soft serve ice cream. Pineapple Dole Whip. Uh... Aloha!!! Served in a waffle cone. Summer is here.
There’s more than just fish at Fish on Fifth.
I'll definitely be back for a cone swirl, after another burger whirl of course!

The food and service at this cheery sanctuary from the world outside never disappoints.  Every meal I've had here arrived quickly.  The staff is dedicated and attentive, the curry sweet potato dipping sauce a delight, the fried fish done perfectly.  Ask for half potato and half sweet potato fries; both are delicious.

The fish (salmon and haddock) was quite good with a light crispy batter. Yam fries also good, but chowder was awful! Limited sauce with the meal. Would go back but would just stick with plain old fish and chips.

Gluten-Free Batter!. We were very happy to have fish and chips again since we have been eating gluten free for the past 3 months. A friend recommended and we had a good meal when we went. Our meals came with nice home-cut fries, home-made tartar, and tasty coleslaw. I had traditional cod and the portion sizes were decent. The only criticism was that the batter was a bit soggy as I prefer a crunch to my fish and chips. Could be due to the wheat-free batter though. Will go again when I need a "chippy" fix.

Update 26-Dec-2013: Went back last Sunday for supper and found it MUCH BETTER. Service was prompt, the same waiter evidently found his groove, and the food was back to the old standard. Yam fries were hot and good, battered oyster burger and grilled salmon burger were hot and fresh and good, and the coleslaw was back, although I notice they now charge extra for it. (For the amount you get, I question the charge.) Coffee was good and refilled a couple times. We're glad to see things getting much better. ----Avoid Weekdays. This used to be our favourite place in Sidney, but the last couple times have been quite different. I strongly suspect it depends to a large extent on when you go. Two visits ago, the waiter screwed up our order completely -- wrong entrees, after 45 minute wait -- and made no apology or concession. The last time (last weekend), we were seated promptly and then left to rot for half an hour before someone came to "refill our drinks" and had to be told that we were still waiting to order. My partner ordered a grilled salmon burger, but whatever he got, it sure wasn't the usual salmon, as it was white and didn't taste like salmon -- maybe pollock or something cheaper like that. I ordered the same thing (salmon), but battered, and it was greasy and burnt dark brown to the point where I couldn't pry the burnt batter off the fish. It was very oily and dry. Also, the fries were limp and not up to the usual standard. Coffee was okay when it finally, finally came. Oh, and both visits we were supposed to get coleslaw but it never came. I guess the coleslaw went wherever the salmon went. I wish they would simply tell us if they run out of something, instead of substituting without telling us. I hope it is better next time, as it used to be the best place for a good salmon burger. I should mention that the chowder was still good, though it was probably sitting from earlier in the day. Hope this helps.

I drive all the way from Victoria to get my fix. Love the Hayden wrap, Thai chicken wrap, the halibut burger and the fish and chips are awesome too. The staff may be young (19-25 I would guess) but they are energetic an friendly. It is definitely worth the trip and the prices are comparable to other restaurants. One downside is they an get busy which means you either wait for a table or get takeout and go down to the waterfront.

Delicious, quick, great value! I had halibut and chips, the fish was killer fresh, the batter could be a tad lighter but was still great, my hubby had the burger and said it was good as well. A tad cheap with the tartar but happy to bring more and not charge me for it!! The lady beside me had the rock fish taco and raved, I must admit it looked fantastic and was massive!! Def recommend Fish on 5th!

Stranded on the Poop Deck. To top off a fun evening at the Sidney Street Market, a friend suggested fish and chips at “Fish on Fifth.” After 25 minutes in a line outside, we were ushered in to the packed restaurant. The young host stopped whilst leading us to the street side canopied patio: “Will you guys be drinking alcohol” he asked. “No,” I replied, “we’re driving.” He did an immediate about face and we followed him to the rear of the restaurant and out the back door. “Why did you ask us if we would be having alcohol,” I asked. “This area is not licensed for alcohol” he replied, seating us at a small table up against the back corner of a corrugated aluminum wall. I glanced up at the gathering thunder clouds and wondered what would happen if it rained.” I was to find out.

Two adjoining tables were soon vacated by other diners and we were left alone. The server took our order of two soups, two cod and chips and a pot of tea with milk. The soup arrived promptly along with the pot of tea without the milk. I reminded the young lady that we needed milk. She left, presumably to fetch it and didn’t return. When she arrived to clear our soup plates, I again asked for milk. “Oh yes,” came the reply and she disappeared inside. The milk never arrived and when she returned again to clear surrounding vacant tables I asked her to replace the tea and bring us milk. “Oh” is there something wrong with the tea” she asked. “I don’t know” I replied, “we haven’t had any but it’s been here half-an-hour and it must be cold.” She needed evidence and felt the pot. “Oh ok,” She said with a surprised look. “It’s raining, do we get an umbrella” I asked. (Only half joking) She laughed. I’ll see if there’s a table inside. And once more she disappeared. She didn’t return.

A second server delivered the fish and chips. “I think we were going to have it inside” I said. “It’s raining.”

“I’ll see if there’s a table inside:” she too disappeared leaving the meals behind and never returned.

The patio gate banged back and forth in the sudden squall and the restaurant door slammed shut as the rain gained momentum. My friend shivered. We felt eerily abandoned. I got up and went inside. Several tables were vacant. I motioned the waitress and she seated me and went outside to retrieve what was left of my fish and chips and usher my shivering friend to the table. It took an hour but we did get our tea — and milk.

The soup was excellent, the fish and chips were excellent (moist flaky fresh fish in light batter, and real home-made chips) and we ordered two fresh berry pies.

From where I was seated I could see inside the kitchen. Our server went into the kitchen, stood stock still, raised her arm, placed the back of her hand on her forehead and looked toward the ceiling. I thought for a moment we were about to enjoy a Shakespeare Soliloquy but, sadly no. Instead I could almost hear her whisper; “What was I doing? Right — got it — two pies for two guys.” She headed straight for the pie counter and with a flourish and a huge smile plonked down two of the most delicious pies. (Yes, warmed with ice cream) Well done Fish on Fifth!

If you go to the Fish on Fifth, you’ll love the fish and chips and the prices are very reasonable. Be sure to have the pie, but at all costs, if somebody makes a move to sequester you on the Poop Deck, stand your ground, lie if you have to. Tell them you drink like a fish. This way you’ll be assured of a table out of the rain.

PS: Despite the service, which is in a state of disorder and confusion, I gave this restaurant an "I like it." rating: for the excellent food.

Tucson lady. We live in Tucson, AZ and travel to Victoria as often as we can. If we fly in, we go to Fish on Fifth straight from the airport. Never had a bad meal. Luv fish and chips. Had my first fried pickle there. If service is slow, must be because food is so good and it gets crowded. Have a beer and chill out. Worth the wait.

Best Discovery Ever!!. My husband and I were taking a week off together to escape the bustle of Hollywood California and explore the beauties of British Columbia. We stayed in Vancouver for awhile, then decided to catch the ferry over to Vancouver Island for a visit. On the ferry, a woman sitting next to us overheard our whiney complaints about how hungry we were, and that White Spot ferry food just wasn't going to cut it. She tapped me on the shoulder and excitedly suggested a little place in the town of Sidney called "Fish on Fifth", that not only made fabulous fish and chip dinners, but also extravagant salads, flavourful wraps, and sizely burgers that were sure to satisfy. Boy am I ever happy this lady decided to drop a line, because after taking her up on her suggestion, my husband and I ventured to Fish, and left feeling completely and utterly fulfilled in every way possible. Not only was the food incredible (myself having the 2 piece cod and chips dinner with half yam fries half garden salad with a grapefruit ginger dressing, and my husband indulging in the halibut and lime wrap with a cup of clam chowder) but the service was fantastic! As soon as we walked in we greeted by a pair of young, excited eyes, welcoming us to our seats. It was a quite young staff which caused the place to feel alive, and our server was never short of something to say when he came by our table. The variety on the menu is incredible, and it took me a decent amount of time to finally decide that I truly did want the infamous fish and chips after being distracted by salmon salads, chicken-strip wraps, oyster burgers...so much to chose from!! Everything we ate was cooked beautifully, and the chef even made the effort to ensure that al of our food was tasting alright. ALRIGHT?! It was fantastic. I recommend this place to anyone who is in the area of Sidney because it is a restaurant I guarantee you will never forget for all the best reasons!

Great Restaurant For All Ages. We recently dined with some friends and family at Fish on Fifth, and enjoyed every aspect of the experience. Our waitress was sweet, friendly and fun, our food was perfection. Two of our guests had fish dishes (which is local)(salmon and Cod), and were very happy with their meals. My husband had the beacon burger which was outstanding, I had the chicken burger on special. The chicken was cooked to perfection! We all loved the regular fries and yam fries (nice to have this option), and my 2 year old greatly enjoyed her entire meal of beautifully grilled cod as well as gobbling up the deep fried macaroni and cheese (best anywhere)! At the end of the meal, we had to try the deep fried cheesecake which was to die for! The atmosphere in the restaurant is fun, yet tasteful. I would recommend Fish on Fifth to anyone of any age. Whether you are dining alone, with family/friends, with or without children, Fish on Fifht is the place to go!

Great food at reasonable price. We both had the Salmon, grilled, not deep-fried. Yam fries and 1/2 order of salad. Good service, attentive and friendly, our water glasses never went dry. Salmon was excellent, good flavor and presentation. The 1/2 order of yam fries and salad was a great idea, lots of both and the salads were fresh and tasty. Yam fries are a weakness of mine and these were quite nice, with a garlicy mayo for a dip. $30 included tip, will go again.

Best fish & chips in 30 years. Food was amazing, nice atmosphere full of locals, great service from young friendly students. The only thing was the price. 2 pieces of fish,1 halibut, 1 salmon and some yam fries along with a drink was around $20 plus tip. Next time I'll have a bag of chips before and only order 1 piecs of fish. Quite busy so ether get there an hour before or after noon.

Great seafood and lots of fun. Cheerful, enthusiastic staff. Fun decor. More seating in back than appears from street. Outdoor tables also available. Calamari was perfect and tender/crispy. Battered fish was very good. Real potato fries, delicious with malt vinegar. Dips had great flavour - no bottled tartar here. Very impressed.

Perfect location in Sidney about 15 minutes from the ferry terminal. A small fish and chips diner that is affordable and has a tasty, well cooked menu. My wife and I each had a 2 piece fish and chips meal. I had haddock and she had the cod. Both were cooked well with crispy batter and fresh delicious fish. The coleslaw was homemade and quite good. The kids shared our fries and colored the menus and it was a pleasant family experience. I will definitely come here again.

Nice little place. The atmosphere is fun and relaxed. The food was fantastic. We had the salmon fish and chips, and haddock fish and chips. Some of the best we've had so far. Haddock was better than salmon. You can have grilled or fried, and you can have one of each if you order 2 pieces. Definitely recommend taking the time to check it out!

Well known, been here for years. Still one of the top places to get yourself some sea delicacies and at a great quality as well. Sidney, is an old port town, with tons of fishing history. Inside of that, quality fish joints are scattered about the greater Victoria area. This one, has some unique options. Outside the sea food realm as well, like a "deep dried Mars bar" amongst others. The owners and staff are always top notch and bringing in new locals and kind energy. To make your visit enjoyable. Stop in at Fish, you won't regret it!

Fabulous, gluten-free fish & chips! They even had three gluten-free beer 🍺 options! The coleslaw is not to my taste, however, the fish and chips and chowder are worth the 60 minute drive from Sooke! One of the very few places that offer a variety of options for each member of my family... all gluten free, some omnivores, some vegan, and some vegetarian. Outdoor seating is available for anyone sensitive to the aroma of seafood.

We always enjoy getting their soft serve, particularly the Dole Whip. As it's too cold for soft serve right now, tbe other night I tried the fried pickles. They were perfect. I loved the dipping sauce. My friend ordered cod and chips and she commended that the batter was too bready. Maybe halibut would have been better?

Quaint little restaurant with a nautical theme. Incredible gluten free options, made my heart so happy to have onion rings again after years of not having them! Menu was labelled clearly, which is fantastic. Makes for a smooth dining experience for a socially anxious celiac. Portions were good, definitely worth the price. Super crispy and greasy, just what I want in my fish and chips. Fun little knot tying chart and a rope on the table, my boyfriend and I had fun attempting to make some knots while we waited. Staff was friendly, made sure to check on us. Overall, wonderful experience and would come back any time i’m in Sidney

Cute little place in Sidney. I was craving chowder and I ended up getting the slamming salmon salad too and I'm glad I did! The dressing was homeade and the salmon cooked so perfectly and seasoned decent sized portion. Such good prices for expectionally well done food. I've also had their fish and chips before and it is always so perfectly fried and delicious. The Chowder was thick and flavourful with lots of potatoes and fish and other veggies...mmmmmm. My server was so sweet and very quick and friendly. A big plus about this place is you can pre-order online and park in their lot and they will come out and deliver to your car. I dined in because I wanted to eat right away. It's a smaller sized restaurant so not a ton of space inside but they have it set up to feel as though you're on a boat, very cute.

Decent for Vancouver standards. Visiting Victoria and on our way we went to try the fish and chips here. The claim chowder was Luke warm and almost felt like it was microwaved.
