Review Mandarin Restaurant - Saskatoon

Katherine Luneng
This, this is a Chinese restaurant worth giving your money to. Everything is well made well cooked and well seasoned. Once you come here you will experience the quality and not really have any desire to go back to the other chinese/Canadian restaurants in this city. Prices are about average to any other Chinese/Canadian restaurant but the quality is Supreme. I will be coming here again and again.

The food was great. Servers were attentive. The price was good. A very satisfying meal. Thanks to all the staff on hand working Sunday's dim sum.

Dim sum for dinner! The food was very good, service outstanding! Restaurant was exceptionally clean and well maintained. Do yourself a favor and give it a throw if you've never been

Warm atmosphere, knowledgeable staff and mouth watering food. Decor is a compliment to the whole experience. One of the best Asian restaurants of this city.

The customer service was good, but the food no, and so expensive. Sorry, but I don't like it.
Gerry Ecker
Great service! Food was great as always, but definitely time to update that dirty looking, old carpet..

I didn't go to buffet recently, but I remember, whenever we go to buffet, we don't give tips as there is nobody serving you the food. You go & pick up your own food.

Only thing we ordered was double Crown Royal shots. That costed me $22.

Anyhow, the waitress Jacky, was adamant that I should pay more than $7.50 for the tips. I told him, its a buffet, and how come you are asking for tips. Then he gave me this talk, "This is Canada my friend....". Then I told him, I've been living here 25 years.

Anyhow, long story short, I didn't give more than that. I'm surprised that even after the minimum $14 wage increase, buffet people are like hawks praying on customers.

The buffet costs $29 per person. At that price, you want tips too?
There was no live cooks, there was no crap legs. Seshami was smelly.

I think the tips should be banned, as it is a bribery.

It is 2018, and times really have changed on the quality of food that is served in a restaurant. Especially at Chinese restaurant. When we called to place a delivery they were very polite, they also delivered it personally and the service was quick and friendly.
We ordered the vegetable fried rice, which was one of my favorites because it was not greasy or mushy and sticky, the only downfall was that they used canned mushrooms! We also had the sweet and sour ribs with pineapple. We really had to look for the pineapple but it had a lot of peppers and onions which was good but the order was ordered with pineapple. the ribs were battered, I don't understand why 99.9% of the restaurants are doing this !! Definitely not my favorite in any ribs to be coded like that. We also had the broccoli and beef, and there was some flavor in the broccoli that I just can't put my finger on, but it reminded me of spearmint gum. We also had honey garlic ribs, they were good but a little dry no sauce.
We found that ALL of the meats were steamed, and S&S was fatty!. No meat textures.
If Grandma would like to try out her new teeth, she would have no worries eating meats at this restaurant. I don't think I will order here again, unless all I want is rice.

Good food, forgot my rice and took it off the bill. Food was something I've wanted to order again but every time i call i don't get an answer? Maybe a drug front don't need business or the number is wrong in the internet i don't know hahah

If you truly love dim sum, please do not go here. My family and I have been going to dim sum places for years and this place is just horrid. Everything we ordered came out warm. The dumplings were mushy and overcooked. The food in general was mushy and full of grease and was not fresh at all.
Cheryl McAvoy
Hands down, best "bang for your buck" dim sum in the city. We come a couple times a month because the food and service is always consistant. We never leave disappointed.

Want to like this place more, but the food just isn't good. We went for lunch whilst they were rotating the carts of food. We chose a variety of things and a few were okay, but very greasy. Makes one's belly upset. Dining area was clean and service was good. Like the concept, not the execution. It was cheap though!
Kevin.C
Absolute garbage...sat right in the middle of the restaurant, everything that came out on the carts was stone cold and greasy...complained to the owner/manager, he did nothing but smile and take our money...no sorry, no discount...nothing... don't waste your time or your cash...this is the second time we've been there and the same thing...they must be planning a trip and screwing the customer to pay for it.
Valdís
This is acceptable food but nothing amazing. I find that a lot of the dishes are quite greasy. The dim sum lacked variety. I do like the service because it's always fast.
Trish McArthur
Great food as usual, delivered my food hot and very tasty! Such flavorful food an always something new to try. Keep up the awesome work! Thanks!

Don't go here.

I had the dim sum last Sunday and midway through the meal began feeling very unwell... as did my lunch mate. Not likely a food poisoning issue, but more likely an issue with ultra low end greasy food that wasn't sitting well in my stomach.

Everything had a thick layer of grease on top, which I assume was added to help keep things fresh looking as they made their continuous rounds. I noticed we would get offered the same thing every 7-10 minutes, so I think they were cooking in too large of batches because nothing was getting fully depleted and therefore nothing was fresh.

On the bright side it only cost me $13.

Make sure I go every time I visit Saskatoon. Peking Pork Chop and the Ginger Beef are excellent. Very reasonable prices and friendly service. Love the Mandarin!
Minion
Cheaper then other competitors but dim sum was meh. ..somewhere to get a quick lunch. Over all not that great. Bad service might wasn't to spend a few dollars more and get quality food
MKAngel
It's not specifically bad food, but by no means was it good food. The dim sum items were pretty much exactly the same just in different shapes.

Always a great experiance. Authentic Chinese food at dinner time. Dim sum is also great at lunch. Highly recommend if you want quality food.
Never again. Three weeks ago we ordered ginger beef, ss chicken balls and fried rice. The ginger beef was not up to their usual standard, the breading on the chicken balls were flat as paper and the fried rice tasted stale and was almost mush. I thought maybe they were having a bad day. Tonight I stopped in on my way home and ordered a Cantonese chow Mein. The chicken was like rubber and had a weird stringy texture and the only vegetable was some baby bok choy, no carrots, no broccoli, no green peppers and no onions or water chestnuts. What happened Paul, I used to enjoy the food here. Me or my family will not be back. What used to be a Saskatoon icon has lost it's touch.
Dmm005
Real Chinese food. This has been our go-to place for Chinese food for 15 plus years... never disappointed.

What happened to my food?. The food and service were good enough but when we asked to have the leftovers packaged up they only packed up about 1/2 of what was left of our special fried rice and about 1/16th of the kung pao chicken...where did the rest of my food go to?

I should have taken a clue from the table beside us who said "Can you bring us takeout containers, we'd like to pack up our own food."
Tina
This Resturant have the Most ignorant staff ever, the food was ok but man they need to be more friendly.

So so if you get them on a good day!. My family and I have been Dim Summing fir 30 or so years throughout Canada. The Mandarin is sooo dirty, until the recent bathroom renovations I wouldnt have let my cat use it for a litter box. Carts are often slow to come bringing with them cold food items, whan you decide to send something back.. be sure not to take a bite to test for warmth...as they fully reheat/ re- deep fry your food item, if it is bad and you send it back you will still be charged for it. Its sad, slim pickings for dim sum in Saskatoon. As for The Mandarin being the best...I think you should try the rest... there are not many but yes some are good!

Definitely Dimmed my Sum, love it!

Clean Authentic Chinese Food. Ordered delivery for the first time from Mandarin Restaurant. I strongly recommend this restaurant for anyone who is looking for tasty authentic Chinese food. We really enjoyed the lemon chicken, pineapple sweet & sour pork, and the house special rice. The barbecue pork buns were awesome, and all the food that we ordered had tasted authentic! Will be ordering from here again

Horrible service. Rude waitresses. Do not communicate properly. The managers are nice though.
Food is just ok.
They do not bring all the food together. Will bring you one thing and takes ages to bring the next dish.

Simply awesome. Great staff and even better food. The Mandarin has been the best Asian restaurant in Saskatoon for many years.... and many more to come. Food is always great, fast, clean and friendly. I'll never stop going back. I've had many things on the menu and love the peking duck, deep fried tofu, ginger chicken... the list goes on. Yes even the tripe and chicken feet were good. Yes I said it :)
Barry
Best of the best. The Mandarin is the best asian restaraunt in Saskatoon. Daily Dim Sum is awesome and reasonably priced, ambiance is real and enjoyable.

For a treat try the BBQ Duck. It is the best that I have ever had in all of Canada!

B

Please Never Change. This place is seriously amazing.

Let's get the bad out of the way first though. The atmosphere is pretty homely. The decor and colors are dated and washed out. However, the food more than makes up for it.

The dim sum on the weekend is just amazing. What's even better, you can order directly off the dim sum menu outside dim sum hours. The shrimp rolls, chung fun (of any variety), sticky rice, and coconut buns are all amazing. But I would say pretty much all of the dim sum menu items are a safe bet. My partner loves tripe, and this is his go-to place for it, where it comes in two variety, plain or with honey.

As for the menu itself, there are so many winners. The soups are all great. The deluxe wonton is bountiful and just tasty. The sweet and sour, is just the right amount of mix between sweet and hot, with lots of great ingredients and textures. I can't even describe how amazing the peached shrimp are, though a little more on the pricier side of the menu. Seafood chow mein is always a winner, too. For veggies, I recommend the steamed Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce. Sometimes, though rarely, they have asparagus too, which is even better. Exploring and ordering new things off the menu never gets old, and we're surprised every time. Though we definitely have our favorites now, and don't go anywhere else when we're in the mood for them.

The best part though, the price. This price is an amazing value for the amount of food. So Mandarin, even though your decor is dated, please never change, because your food and prices are oh-so-awesome.

Hot and sour soup. Since the closing of Total Happiness, this place is now home to the best hot & sour soup in the city. While usually picking up to eat at home, the food is always tasty and reasonably priced. When eating in, do not be afraid of the dingy looking entrance way as the seating area itself is quite bright and warm.

First time visit. , Sat. ni.... First time visit. ,
Sat. night 6:00
Very busy place. (the food should therefore be good).
Not disappointed.
My wife and I really enjoyed our 31st anniversary supper.

I have been to this place many time over the years. Supper is always good. This last trip to Mandarin for Dim sum was disappointing. Food was cold & lacking.
Frodo
In a rough part of town but it's worth the drive. The one reason i like this place so much aside from the food is the kitchen is spotless. Amazing duck and seafood dishes. A diamond in the rough. Literally

There were four of us that went for Dim Sum and wow it was great, and the whole meal came to 40.00 and we were stuffed. A must try restaurant.

Decent. Good food, but some stuff is sub par (kinda blends together in a gross way) most of it is delicious tho, have to know what to order, take out is good!
Love_lion
My friend worked there and told me he will never eat there after he worked there. I was surprised. But anyway, I tried couple times and think dim sum cant as good as yip hong's. The dishes were okay. As a chinese, I dont like it too much.

I wanted to like it.... But after numerous visits here for dim sum, I had to change my vote to "don't like." Too often the dishes they serve are cold and old, and the steamed shrimp dumplings I had most recently tasted sour and off. On a previous visit, we arrived a bit late on a Saturday (near 2 p.m.) and they told us yes, they were still serving dim sum. As soon as we sat down, they said the cart service was over and we could order a la carte. I ordered a couple dishes and was brought some cold gross things that were obviously leftovers from the cart service. I've given them a fair shot, but doubt I'll be back.

Best Dim Sum in town. Other dishes taste great as well. I have visited this restaurant many many times and I was never dissatisfied with the food. Service on the other end is horrible. They treat you like shit - never check on you- never refill your water and they have very hard time smiling. If you only care about taste, mandarin rocks. If you care about service, mandarin stinks.

Nice place to try.. Stopped by this establishment early Sunday evening. There were four of us in our party and we ordered the hot and sour soup first. It was tasty, but could have been a little bit hotter, temperature wise for my liking. We ordered three dishes and were also brought a large, what looked like an ice bucket, full of white rice. The three dishes we ordered were, chicken cashew nut with vegetables, shanghai noodles plus sweet and sour chicken with peppers and onions. All three of the dishes were tasty and plentiful. However, the shanghai noodles were nothing more than the same noodles that other places call "chow mein" , so were were slightly disappointed with that dish. Also, we were supplied with an endless amount of green tea, which was a nice touch. Total bill came to $42.

The only other thing I could possibly complain about is the size of the table for four. The one that we were seated at barely could accommodate all the food that we had on it. There was a lot of juggling going on as plates were passed around, narrowly missing knocking down numerous water glasses etc.

It's a nice place to try if you've never been there.

Bird's Nest. I was there last year, and I had the bird's nest. It was great dining in a real Chinese restaurant. I love that they ask if you would like fork or chopsticks and do not charge you for the green tea.

Great food huge selection. The food is really good, but the dim sum choices are astounding.

Decent Dim Sum. I usually go to the Mandrin for Dim Sum on Sunday mornings and I'm usually satisfied. The hardest part is hitting the food rotation at the right time.

The Good:

Generally good food if it's busy. Reasonably priced. 4 of us can go for around $10 a person.

The Bad:

If you go when it is slow expect cold food and expect to wait for a long time for new stuff to come out of the kitchen.

The Verdict:

Go when it's busy and you'll be fine. Don't forget to try new things.

Mandarin restaurant has pretty slow service during Dim Sum. The shrimps in the Har Gao were Viagra hard and the rice wrappig was sour. Overall the quality was mediocre. Would not come again.
Cassandra
Delicious Dim Sum. Mandarin Restaurant has a wonderful dim sum selection and great staff who are friendly and helpful.
The restaurant offers a variety of traditional dim sum dishes, as well as the favourites everyone loves.
I understand Mandarin also offers a great Chinese food menu as well, and the prices are very reasonable.
It's a good choice - a restaurant worth visiting.
