Review Golden Pagoda Restaurant - Saskatoon

Jennifer Jaspar
Every thing we have ever ordered from Golden Pagoda has been beyond excellent. It is my favourite take-out in Saskatoon. The spicy rice with the house beef curry and the spring rolls are my absolute favourite. Owner is such a nice guy and always remembers my husband when he goes in. If you haven’t given this place a try yet, go! You won’t be disappointed! We have never had a bad meal from there.

I ordered 4 different options from the lunch menu because I hadn't tried Burmese food before and was interested in experiencing it. A couple of dishes were a bit to sweet for my liking and the flavors weren't as complex as I had imagined they would be. The curry was alright. The lunch menu and the dinner menu are quite different and I think this is a place I will have to return to in the future to properly evaluate some of the other dishes they offer as so many people really love this place. The owners must being doing something right! As things stand, I feel like this is an incompletele review, but the lunch menu had left me looking for more than what was offered.

Greatly enjoyed lunch. Nice twist on Oriental food. My wife and I had a curry combo with spring rolls. All were very good. Our companions had the Mandarin salad that was very good. The owner is a very personable man. I have found my favorite restaurant in Saskatoon.

I’ve tried this place with my friend for the first time and frankly it won’t be the last! As much as I know, this is the only Burmese restaurant in Saskatoon. The place has a limited seating area so it’ll be best if you reserve a table. We happened to come in on a less busy time of the day. I was delighted with the uniqueness and the taste of their food. I’ve ordered the Coconut Noodle Bowl and shared the Thousand Layer Bread and salad with my friend. Great flavour and I’ll definitely be back!

I’ve waited two years since my last trip to Saskatoon to eat here, as it was closed during my last trip, and it was well worth the wait. As the only Burmese restaurant between Ontario and BC, it is hard to find Burmese cuisine at home in Edmonton. The owner is a very nice man and we chatted about Burmese cuisine over our meal. We ordered the tea leaf salad, Shan noodles and Mohinga rice noodles. All three dishes were excellent and the portions are HUGE, so much so that we ended up taking most of our Shan noodles home. Whenever I visit YXE again, I will eat at Golden Pagoda again.

Amazing tastes I highly suggest this place if you are interested in trying something new. Very friendly owners. Great experience.

Absolutely fantastic food in a nice and cozy atmosphere with friendly service. Portion sizes are very generous and the price is really good. I tried three different dishes with my family for lunch and they all had their very own delicious flavour. My favourite was the Burmese Noodle Bowl with shrimp.

The food was delicious, and the owner was a joy to talk to! Highly recommended this place.

The coconut chicken soup is an easy introduction, as in low spice. The pickled green tea salad is a crunchy and spicy masterpiece.

Excellent customer service, great food, nice atmosphere! Definitely a hidden gem

Golden Pagoda is hands-down my favorite restaurant in Saskatoon. Service is friendly and every dish I've tried has been excellent. My personal favs are the Thai basil fish and main curry, but special mentions to their coconut soup and Tamarind soup.

We just ate here for the first time last night and it was incredible! We'll definitely be back to try more of the menu. The Thai Basil and Chili Fish is delicious!

Great, fresh food with a nice atmosphere

Went there once and plan to go back whenever I'm in Toontown! Great food. Friendly family.

Great Burmese food in Saskatoon! Well balance flavor with traditional taste. The owner is friendly and not afraid to strike up a conversation. Have visited this restaurant three times and will continue to visit!

Best Burmese place in town... Not saying much though since it's also the only one. So let me sell it to you a different way- Imagine what you'd get if you crossed Kabab King and Red Pepper. Yeah.

Golden Pagoda is a shining example of a restaurant, the kind of place that I always hope to discover.  On its surface it does not seem to be much, just a Burmese restaurant that doesn't seem too busy.  But the food is incredible and the value is even more incredible.  The dishes are really interesting, kind of like a cross between Indian and Chinese cuisine, with lots of spicy and complex flavours.  One dish was a sort of bed of crispy onions over a coconut broth.  Another was a very interesting and spicy rice dish with nuts.  Another was a spicy chicken dish over rice noodles.  All were fantastic and the price was great.  The staff did not seem very attentive and it was difficult to get the attention of the staff when needed but that is a small fault when otherwise the experience was so great.

Ordered from Skip the Dishes. Took a really long time to get our food. Admittedly disappointed. I'm going to echo other reviewers in that the food was super bland, very little flavour. Both soups were mediocre. Makes the laksa at Asia Hut seem even more phenomenal though.

Golden Pagoda is one of my favourite restaurants to go to. They're super accommodating to vegans and their spicy ginger lemongrass tofu is amazing.

Wonderful family-owned restaurant! First things first- expect to take your time. This is a family owned restaurant with minimal staff. Don't get impatient if your bill doesn't come as soon as your plate is clean - in fact, it's easier for the owner if you go to the desk, he'll know you're finished and waiting to pay, and will shortly come to you. The service is quick and friendly, and the owner is always willing to recommend or make substitutions (eg., removing fish sauce out for vegans!) <br/> The food: fabulous. Very rich flavour! Great cost for the amount and quality of the food.  Good range of meat, vegetarian and vegan dishes. They use quality ingredients which you can taste. Appetizers: the spring rolls are wonderful, and the thousand layer bread is sweet and has a wonderful texture. Tempura onion is another favourite. My favourite lunch is the pat thai without fish sauce- you know how some pat thai's are thick and way too sweet? this is the perfect balance of flavour and spice, with a good serving of tofu. Favourite dish of all time is the vegetables in banana leaf (vegetarian style). It's so, so, so delicious. I can't quite describe it - hot, and sweet, and spicy, with steamed vegetables and rice. Wonderful. This is one of the best locally owned restaurants in saskatoon,

This is a fantastic restaurant! Great service in a clean family run restaurant. We shared the spicy chicken, curry shrimp and pad thai. All three dishes were superb and very reasonably priced. One of the best meals I have had in a long time and I cannot wait to go back the next time we are in Saskatoon. <br/><br/>A fantastic restaurant that I highly, highly recommend!
Ara
The main dishes are good to share. My husband and I shared chicken curry and rice. We got ours pretty spicy and it was really good! Tasted like Bangladeshi cooking. Will be back to try more from the menu! Thanks for the great service!

I love Golden Pagoda. There are so many unique and delicious flavour combinations here. The service is also quick. Golden Pagoda is definitely a favorite in Saskatoon. The server and (I'm going to guess) his family are so cute. I wish the best for them.

I love a restaurant where someone will confidently recommend a meal. From reading earlier reviews I knew I wanted the pickled green tea salad, but beyond that, I had no idea. The owner was a fantastic help and recommended a fish dish with chillies and thai basil.<br/><br/>For two reasons I gave this place 5/5: <br/><br/>First is the service. The owner is friendly and engaging, and justifiably proud to share the food and culture of his home country with his new home. I was dining alone on a business trip, which can be lonely, but I felt at home here.<br/><br/>Second, the food is like nothing I've had. Most cuisines are at least somewhat familiar by now, with ingredients, flavour profiles, and techniques borrowed from neighbouring cultures. Worse, so many Asian immigrant businesses default to the mass produced, deep fried "Canadian" Chinese food, or sub-par sushi that too many Canadians expect and frankly waste their time and money on. Don't expect that here! This was my first experience of Burmese food, and that's pretty much all they do! The pallette is clearly southeast Asian, but the flavours were 100% new to me. I've read that Burmese food exists in the middle ground between Thai and Indian food. That statement is a starting point, but comes well short of truly explaining it - at least for the small part of the menu I enjoyed. When my wife asked what the salad was like, i lacked the vocabulary to explain it, which in itself was a cool experience.<br/><br/>Come in with an open mind, place your trust in the proprietor, and enjoy one of the few truly unique food experiences left in this country. Worth the trip, even if if that means going out of your way to visit Saskatoon! I'm looking for an excuse to go back!
Alex
Nice 'homey' restaurant. Like the menu suggests, Burmese food is a peculiar blend between various South Asian cultures - it is really reflected in the taste. I found that my favourite dishes here are ones that are saltier or more savoury in taste, with the sweeter curry's seeming like more of a dessert than an actual meal. Also, would recommend dinner dishes as the lunch menu restricts choice a little too much for my liking.

This was my favourite spot in Saskatoon when I lived there. In fact, the Golden Pagoda was my first experience with Burmese food. For a while this was the only Burmese restaurant in Canada, fortunately GP's chef, Lujo (spelling?), has a brother who opened up Amay's Place on Victoria Drive in Vancouver. <br/><br/>Burmese food is a fusion of the traditional foods eaten by the various ethnic groups that make up Burma/Myanmar and influences from the surrounding areas. Indian flavours come to play extensively in Burmese food, far more that the expected influences. Burmese cuisine is sometimes unfairly compared to Thai or Malay cuisine and those expectations sometimes prejudice people. Yes, you can find Pad Thai or Nasi Goreng on Burmese menus, but the Burmese have some really unique offerings. Lujo and I conversed about this over tea while I was waiting for my order and we both decided that Burmese food was best described as a "crossroads" cuisine. <br/><br/>Some of my favourites are the salads — the pickled green tea and green papaya salads. Amazing salads, great flavours I doubt you have ever had elsewhere. The spicy ginger and lemongrass curry was my favourite and it often saw me through the long Prairie winters. The Main curry is unique and a good example of how Indian flavours make their way in to the cuisine. Steam cooked fish in a banana leaf. Cococunt chicken curry soup. The Spicy Tamarind soup saw my through a few nasty illnesses. And for lunch time only, the Thousand Layer Bread. So good — too good. <br/><br/>The staff have always been good and the chef, Lujo, is a great guy. Very friendly, very relaxed. The decor is basic and some people gave complained, but it is very clean. My biggest complaint is that some of the ingredients were bulk bought at the supermarket. The food was still good but it just meant the spice level could be inconsistent. Hopefully that has changed and they have started buying chilis from Grandora Farms, a place that grows some of the hottest peppers around in the heart of the Prairies.<br/><br/>I live in Victoria now so I can only get my Burmese fix when I am visiting Vancouver and good fortune sends me Amay's way. But the Golden Pagoda still had a hold on my affections.

Went in for a birthday supper meal. The service was perfect and the food was out of this world! I was looking for something packed with flavor and a bit healthier and I found exactly what I was looking for. I am certainly going to be back for more!

A nice surprise. I've driven past this place for years and only recently eaten here. I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed the fusion of flavors from different cultures. The samosas were amazing! I also enjoyed the fact that you could personalize your spice levels. My server was the owner of the restaurant. He explained that it was just him and his wife. I also noticed children's shoes near the entrance and laughter coming from the back. Kudos to the owners for raising a family and a restaurant at the same time! I'm thoroughly impressed with how hard they have worked.
Big White Dog
Love it. Love this place for lunch! Spicy curries, great spring rolls and noodle dishes.<br/><br/>They can dial up the spice for you and really light it up! <br/><br/>Will continue to frequent.

When I still lived in Saskatoon, this was my favourite place. Staff was always great, the food always fantastic and there's nothing like a good lemongrass curry to smooth over the cold when it hits -40°. <br/>Given Saskatoon's love affair with Thai food, it is surprising how overlooked The Golden Pagoda is. Coconut curry chicken soup, lemon grass and the main curries, the salads - all worth having. <br/>Living on Vancouver Island now, but as luck has it the owner's brother has opened a restaurant in Vancouver. Do yourself a favour: eat at The Golden Pagoda.

Bright, shining flavours!. I come home from Ottawa every year, sometimes twice. No visit is complete without a visit to Golden Pagoda! This place should be packed every night. Wonderful food at good prices and quite easily some of the friendliest service one could find. My latest visit was August 26th 2014 in a group of 7. We were spoiled with the samosas, both chicken and vegie with their wonderfully fresh sauces and the addictive deep fried onion appetizers. We ordered six or seven main dishes, all of which were outstanding but chief among these flavour treats were the chicken with ginger and lemongrass and the Tilapia with vegies. OMG!!! We left stuffed and content with a bag of leftovers for my nephew's fiancee who couldn't make it. Price for 7 people, appetizers and main courses, a carafe of wine and a number of beer---$140. Doesn't get any better than this!
Cheryl
First timers! Our server was friendly and gave us great suggestions. We ordered the main chicken curry, asparagus and tofu stir fry, coconut rice and naan bread. Tons of flavour!! We will return- would love ice in the water next time! But also- they serve cokes in glass bottles, total throwback! :)

The best in Saskatoon for asian food lovers. Wowwww the food is simply superb. Anyone craving for a good asian cusine, this would be THE BEST restaurant to dine for. First of all the portions are large that each time that I go for the dinner there, I definitely get a to-go for home. The service is also so good that the guy who serves is very friendly and explains about each dish which makes it easier to decide on the order. It has been nearly 7months since I had know this restaurant and nowadays I have been going almost once every two week for dinner, For all those who are spicy food and fish lovers, I would definitely recommend Fish in Banana leaf and Deep fried salmon in spicy sauce. These two are best fish dishes I ever had. Lemon grass chicken and Main curry are the best chicken dishes. The Samosas are also too good. The very good thing about this restaurant is that you can choose your own spice level for all spicy dishes. The dinner menu differs from the lunch menu, I wish that all the dishes are available all the time. Good job guys...Continue the good work.

Delicious Food!. Me & my husband dined here with friends and I was very impressed with the food. It was delicious and the Owner was very friendly. I will definitely be returning. <br/>Linda C.

Pleasantly surprised after eating at this hidden gem. Nice ambiance, good service, and outstanding food. These are the words come to mind while walking out ...

Visiting Saskatoon and found a hidden gem. Our first time trying Burmese food and it was delicious! Loved the coconut chicken soup! I would definitely back again!

Went here for my belated birthday lunch, and man, the food was exceptional! Loved every single dish, although I wish that they would've gone spicier. I thought 8 was supposed to be super spicy! Oh well. The flavour more than made up for that. I really enjoyed the Thai pizza in particular, I thought it was very unique. The pad Thai was surprisingly my least favourite, although it usually is a dish I love no matter what. But really, it's a positive thing for me to say that--the pad Thai was great, everything else just somehow managed to be even better! The owner was also super nice, and made an effort to talk to us. His daughter was such a sweetheart! Will be back...for supper next time ;)

Delicious and Unique. We were thoroughly pleased with the excellent service and delightful food in this family friendly treasure.

Home cooked food. It was my first time trying Burmese food and I LOVE IT!! The restaurant is small, very casual, family-run and unpretentious. Our waiter was very friendly and recommended the wednesday special for $12, consisting of a beef curry, asparagus stir-fry and spicy rice - a little bit of everything! We had the option of choosing the spice level (2 - 8), I chose 5 which turned out to be perfect for someone who only eats spicy food from time to time, but still really enjoys it. I would not change a thing about the meal, it was absolutely perfect. I cannot wait to return for a second meal.

Very Good. The menu is not very large but what they do have is very good and tastes very fresh. They make everything from scratch and have decent prices. The location is kind of a pain to get too as they are on the corner of a very busy intersection but if you park by Horizon you will have no problems.

Unbelievable food no denying it but irked about service tonight. This is not a review against the food but I was very annoyed with my server. I asked for a glass of white wine BECAUSE I DON'T DRINK RED and the server arrived with red wine so I told her I ordered white and she rudely told me I didn't and stated that I ordered red basically making me feel like a bold child. Luckily my friend took the red wine but it bothered me that she wasn't willing to admit her very minor mistake and she basically challenged me. Very much not a big deal but left a sour taste in my mouth. Food is phenomenal but not so sure about the service!!!!

A nice little family restaurant with unique and tasty food. Highly recommended!

A real pleasure. The food is just so good! Have had at least five of the coconut and or curry dishes and they are all excellent. The veggies in banana leaf a sure thing, and the spring rolls best in town. We found the tangerine salad kind of bleh, but maybe that's just in comparison with the superb dishes around it! Enjoyed the ambiance of the owner's toddler playing around the tables -- not intrusive, just cute.

Best Food. Simply the Best Asian Food i had in Saskatoon. Bit pricey, however nice ambiance and good service. Loved it

Hidden gem - ate there last night, driven past probably a thousand times and never knew it was there until profiled recently. Great tasting food - unique - not Chinese or Thai, not Indian or Pakistani, but a nice blend of all! Will be going back.

Friendly, fast, thorough service. Food was quick, portions large. Flavour was the best part of all.

Fantastic and Unique. Outstanding food -- loved the vegetables in banana leaf, Main Curry. Great service. Excellent value.

Wow!. I haven't reviewed a restaurant in quite a while but the delicious supper I had last night here has prompted me to write! We tried 6 different dishes from coconut rice, lemon grass chicken to coconut shrimp and EVERYTHING was delicious. We will definitely be back again. Thanks alot for the great service as well, very courteous and helpful!

Exceptional and Unique. The Pagoda has the best food in the city for the best price. With a breadth of dishes and flavours you've never had anywhere else, we are so lucky to have this gem in Saskatoon. Some of my favourites: Coconut noodle bowl, pickled green tea leaf salad, curried fish, pork salad... Everything is phenomenal, and the owner and his family are lovely. LOVE IT!

A+ will be back. Just finished supper at the Golden Pagoda; despite living in town for 10 years and passing by there on a regular basis, never stopped in. My loss! <br/><br/>Supper was delicious - I recommend the vegetarian spring rolls, the veg samosa, the potato curry and the coconut chicken soup. The soup is thick and tangy, with the lemon and cilantro setting off the coconut flavour; it tastes even better when eaten with one of the curried dishes. Potato curry was tasty - hearty with perfectly cooked potatoes. We ordered a '5" and received nicely medium spiced food, at least on the white person scale. We also had the vegetables cooked in a banana leaf. Possibly the only downside was the naan - unremarkable - but the coconut rice made up for that. We have enough for supper tomorrow - the portion sizes are very generous (the soup serves two starving people or four as a big appetizer.) <br/><br/>We both enjoyed our supper very much and will put the Pagoda into our regular rotation. Service was excellent and the food delivery was timely; presentation was clean and thoughtful. Not a huge fan of the metal soup spoons but a minor quibble. It looks like they also have good specials on Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday nights.

It is ammmmmmaaaaaaaaazing!!! Service is wonderful (owner is incredibly friendly and nice) and food is to die for. Absolutely mouth watering meat and vegan dishes!

Coconut Chicken Soup - a must!. Go with a friend and try this dish, it's a meal for 2 on it's own. a creative combination of cilantro, red onion, fresh lime, noodles, chicken, fried onion and a rich coconut broth!
Chris
Awesome! Very authentic, very large helpings, and very friendly staff! Will be going back! Try the main curry and papaya salad and asparagus stir fry!

Great food! Worth a try. I am not usually one to comment/review a place, but this place prompted me to create an account.<br/><br/>I have eaten their food (Take-out) twice so far, and both dishes were fabulous. I have not eaten in, or had delivery yet so I cannot comment on that.<br/><br/>I have had the Burmese Noodle Bowl, and the Spicy Rice Bowl. Both had amazing flavours, and if you REALLY love spicy food (I mean really like), let them take it to level 8 on the heat with the rice bowl. The curry with it had amazing flavour, and packed a kick, but nothing that a seasoned spicy food eater cannot handle. The chilies they use kick you in the face, but dissipate quickly.<br/><br/>I am really looking forward to returning and trying more from their menu soon.
LoveFood
Great food, a little pricey. We had coconut veggies in a banana leaf and some kind of curry beef with potatoes (I think it said it was a specialty) with rice and naan. Both main dishes were excellent, though very different. The former seemed like Thai food, the latter like Indian. The rice dish was rather small. The naan was disappointing. The service was excellent. Very fast for an ethnic restaurant.

Vote on Hold for Now. My love for Asian food brought me here for dinner. It is a smaller restaurant with a nice atmosphere although I wish there was some music playing to block out the noise from the kitchen. My husband and I ordered the Curry Chicken, Ginger Lemon Grass Chicken, steamed rice and naan bread. In my opinion, both main dishes were ok; however, my husband loved them. Perhaps it was because the Curry Chicken contained chicken legs (which I don't like; next time I'll order beef) and I would have like the Ginger Chicken to be spicier (we chose a 4). The service was fantastic: super friendly woman and their ingredients are fresh. We had the elephant ears for dessert which was to die for and a must try. I ate three pieces! I'm putting my vote on hold for now until I try this restaurant again. I definately recommend giving this place a try!
Drm310
Went here last night and was very impressed. It's a small place, simply decorated and comfortable. The food was excellent! The samosas were crispy and flavorful, and the curried pork and steamed vegetables were delicious. Will definitely return to try some other items!
Todd Cocks
The food was excellent - some of the best Asian food I've had in Saskatoon. It's a cute little restaurant that isn't pretentious in the least. Service was relatively quick and friendly. It is a relatively quiet and subdued other than when some of the owners children zoomed around on toy vehicles ;). Not a big deal, we loved the food, especially the samosas and the vegetables sever in a banana leaf.
Lasman
We'll be back!. Excellent meal! Everything was fresh, fast and delicious! We squeezed in just before the kitchen closed but they did not rush us! We had a fabulous meal. I had to take almost half of my meal home as the serving was that generous. We can not wait to return and try their other delights!
Some Guy
Some Guy. I have just found my new favourate 'Indian' (yes, I know it is Burmese but it is in my mind in a similar catagory) food place in Saskatoon. Maybe I had just been too long without curry, but the food I got was delicious! I got the Main Curry at 6/8 spiciness and it was wonderful! My girlfriend got a noodle bowl and she was impressed with it. We also got the pickled Tea leaf salad and it was quite good as well. <br/><br/>However, I should note that if you are going to this restaurant, I hope you are not the antisocial type, because you will need friends to get through the MAMMOTH portions. We spent $35 on the three dishes and a beer and we left with more than half our food after becoming comfortably full. Highly recommended!

Simple decor but fantastic food. Very unique menu. We have tried almost everything on the menu and have never had a dish under 8.5/10.<br/>Always same waitress and she is super. Well worth a $10 tip every time!<br/>Everything appears to be made fresh, even the veggies are prepped on order.

Go eat here. Consistently good food (Try the coconut Chicken soup - it's a meal in itself) <br/><br/>Staff are friendly and courteous. Restaurant is a converted doughnut shop on a busy street. Great for after work dinner/small events. <br/><br/>One of our favorite places to eat in Saskatoon.

Cheap and Delicious Lunch. Came here for lunch today. The service took a little long, but it was fine considering there was only one server and it was lunch hour.<br/><br/>We had the Burmese Spring Rolls, Samosa's and the Layered Bread stuffing (I think?) for appetizers. My colleagues had the noodle stirfry and the Burmese pizza, and I ordered the Spicy Rice Bowl. The Rice Bowl was spicy, nothing that made me sweat (I got level 6). and the others thought their meals were good too.<br/><br/>The prices were really good for the lunch (3 appetizers, 3 lunches, and 3 pops came out to be about 48 bucks not including tip. Would definitely come back again, just for the good value/taste ratio on lunch. Dinner would be another review :)

So good!. Dishes that are tasty and unique. Wine wasn't too expensive either! Lots of options for vegetarians. Spicy eggplant curry, vegetables in banana leaf, coconut chicken soup, and pork curry were especially enjoyable. Naan wasn't as good as some places, but the spicy rice is super. The staff is very friendly too. Service took a while on a saturday night, but it was quite full.<br/><br/>Highly recommended!
Kat
Awesome and delish. This was the site of my first ever meal in Saskatchewan and so far my most frequented restaurant in Saskatoon (it helps that it happens to be near home). I have always found the food to be delicious, the service to be mellow and cheerful, and the value to be excellent. Simply wonderful. :)

Nice, nice, nice. This place is a treasure. Burmese food combines elements of Indian and Thai cooking. There are a lot of interesting and unique things on the menu. Ask for their homemade hot sauce!

My favourite. Best vegetarian friendly restaurant in saskatoon. everything is insanely delicious.

A thorough review. This is an in-depth review. If you want the overall impressions, please scroll down to near the bottom.<br/>-<br/>Here is the situation: a group of 12 hungry university students tackle nearly the whole Golden Pagoda menu and here are the results:<br/>-<br/>Atmosphere:<br/>It's a very small restaurant, so our long table for 12 easily spanned over half the dining area. If we weren't there, the atmosphere would be calm and cozy. But with the 12 of us, it was lively, but still comfortable. The restaurant gives no feeling of claustrophobia.<br/>-<br/>Cleanliness:<br/>Very clean all around, which includes floors, chair, and most importantly: dining utensils.<br/>-<br/>Washroom:<br/>An odd layout with a single toilet with a chair immediately in front of it. I will need to be informed of its purpose. It is small, and although the floor and appliances weren't gleaming, it was still clean.<br/>-<br/>Food arrival:<br/>Because the menu was sent ahead of time, the items were ready to be served the moment we arrived.<br/>-<br/>Appetizer<br/>[5/5] Coconut Chicken Soup ($13.50):<br/>This is hands down the highlight of the meal. The creamy texture and novelty method of mixing your own ingredients only adds to the dining experience. The fried onion is perfect, while the noodles add some extra texture. One order will be enough for 5 bowls of soup. Taste is perfect. Absolutely fantastic.<br/>-<br/>-<br/>Mild "Spicy" (level 2/8)<br/>[4/5] Vegetable Stir Fry ($9.00):<br/>Surprisingly sweet for a purely vegetable dish. I would suggest that it could have been cooked for a tad longer because some of the vegetables, notably the carrots, were still a little hard and had not fully released its flavors.<br/>-<br/>[4/5] Shrimp in Coconut Sauce ($14.00):<br/>The coconut sauce was a too thin for my liking, as I prefer "heartier" sauces. The portion is a little smaller compared to the rest, nevertheless it was still very flavorful.<br/>-<br/>[3/5] Sweet and Sour (chicken) ($12.00):<br/>Too sweet. Not enough sour. Felt like it was a borderline dessert. The sweetness distracted from any flavors that may have once resembled "chicken".<br/>-<br/>[3.5/5] Burmese Style Fried Rice (chicken) ($14.00):<br/>Felt a little dry in the mouth, but besides that not bad. Not the best variation on fried rice in town, but still acceptable.<br/>-<br/>[4.5/5] Sweet Sauce with Soy (chicken) ($12.00):<br/>Just enough sweetness that doesn't overpower the senses, unlike the aforementioned sweet and sour chicken. What makes this dish extra special is the sauce, which should not be wasted as it captures the full flavors of the sweet soy and chicken. Try mixing it with rice or nan.<br/>-<br/>[4/5] Mushroom Tofu Stir Fry ($9.00):<br/>A refreshing mixture of textures and flavors that stood out from the rest of the orders. Nothing was undercooked, as experienced in other dishes, but one could distinguish the various main ingredients incorporated into this dish.<br/>-<br/>[3/5] Burmese Style Fried Noodle (shrimp) ($15.00):<br/>The taste is bland. The texture is correct, but the flavors do not stand out. Carrots were undercooked once again.<br/>-<br/>[2.5/5] Egg Noodles in Garlic Oil (shrimp) ($15.00):<br/>I take that back, because this dish had even less taste. I was looking forward for the taste of garlic! I'm no Emeril Lagasse but even a hint of garlic (BAM!) would have made my evening. Alas the presence of garlic was nonexistent. All of the taste is lost in the mix of vegetables.<br/>-<br/>-<br/>Medium "Spicy" (level 6/8)<br/>[4.5/5] Spicy Eggplant ($9.00):<br/>Fantastic dish that has so much punch! Makes for a fantastic mix with rice or nan. Although it was level 6, it was not very spicy. It tasted slightly more spicy than the level 8 even, which was very curious. A very tasty serving of mashed eggplant though!<br/>-<br/>[4.5/5] Spicy Ginger Lemon Grass Shrimp ($14.00):<br/>I'm starting to see a trend: anything with thick curries or sauces tastes better. This is one of them. I enjoyed the combination of ginger and lemon grass, not only regarding taste but also textures.<br/>-<br/>[4.5/5] Spicy Potato Curry ($9.00):<br/>This literally tastes like baked potatoes cut into large chunks and mixed with a curry (that was supposed to be spicy but did not taste spicy). Whatever it was: it worked. It's simple, yet effective. The potatoes are cooked to perfection, and once again, the curry is the star of the dish and not the potatoes! Tastes great with rice or nan.<br/>-<br/>-<br/>Hot (level 8/8)<br/>[4.75/5] Main Curry (chicken) ($12.00):<br/>This was supposed to be the "king" of heat! But where was the heat? Sure, it was a little spicy, but last time I came and tried level 7, I was sweating from the scalp! Where are those intense bouts of heat? Although this was the best tasting of the curries in my opinion, and the chicken was not dry and packed with taste, the "level 8" did not live up to the heat I had envisioned. Makes me wonder how consistent the various levels are.<br/>-<br/>-<br/>Dessert<br/>[4/5] Elephant Ear ($5.00):<br/>This is the sort of dessert one would find at a fair, except that it is presented pre-cut into a number of bite-sized pieces. This light, deep-fried pastry is lightly drizzled with chocolate sauce and hinted with cinnamon and sugar. It tasted good and the sweetness was not overpowering. Nothing special though.<br/>-<br/>-<br/>Sides<br/>[4.5/5] Coconut Rice ($3.00):<br/>Simply cooked rice with the aroma of coconut. Made for a great side with any of the curries!<br/>-<br/>[3.5/5] Nan Bread ($1.50):<br/>Definitely not as good as what one would find in most other Indian restaurants. This version is more dense in texture, resembling that of a pita bread, instead of what I usually encounter (fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside). <br/>-<br/>-<br/>Service<br/>Excellent service. She always made sure our glasses were topped (which is a feat when serving 12 teenagers) and quickly cleared finished plates. One of the most respectful, kind servers that I have ever met in Saskatoon. She even seemed to enjoy what she was doing, which is much more than what I can say for most other "fine" restaurants in Saskatoon.<br/>-<br/>-<br/>Final Thoughts<br/>I do not know what other people feel, but one of the treasures of Saskatoon can be found in Golden Pagoda and is called the "Coconut Chicken Soup". It is by far the best (in terms of flavor and price) item on the menu, and trust me, I tried most of the menu. In respect to the other items, the key is to order dishes not just for the meat, but for their sauces. Always order sides of rice or nan to make consuming and savoring the bare flavors of the curries/sauces easier. Be careful of the rating scale, as I find that it changes. Level 7 can be scalding hot one day, while the next visit you may find that even the level 8 is more mild than the previous level 7. The noodle dishes in general were not good, as they lacked both the taste and texture components. With all taken into account, I would give Golden Pagoda: 4/5<br/>-<br/>If I can leave you with one thing, it is this:<br/>"Coconut Chicken Soup"<br/>-<br/>Try it.

Interesting Cuisine. Lovely samosas at this place. Beware of the chili rating scale...they are not joking around!

Nestled in a former Robin's Donut location the Golden Pagoda seems like an unlikely place to find a good meal. But appearances can be so deceiving. Spanning Indian and Thai flavours this kitchen produces pure magic.

Amazing! Such good food and lots of food for the money. Just order a couple dishes and rice and naan bread and you can have an amazing meal for a few friends. YUM!!

Very tasty. If you like spicy foods this place should be tried. Be cautious with their spice level! Level 3 seems plenty hot for those who can't take very spicy foods.

This place is the best restaurant in Saskatoon, Burmese seems to me like a cross of Indian and Thai food, service is awesome and ordering take out is easy and quick
Lunchography
The Golden Pagoda on 2nd Avenue may be one of the most under-appreciated treasures that lunchtime in Saskatoon has to offer. Many have driven by, but few have entered—we eat here all the time and it’s always felt like “our little secret”. We’re shocked that this place isn’t always overflowing, given the quality of the food and the friendly atm
