Review Toku Japanese Restaurant - Richmond

Great sushi place in Landsdowne Centre.First time coming here. Decent food and portion size. Ingredients are fresh. Good customer service. Relaxing ambiance, clean and well-maintained. Price range is a bit high compared to other Japanese restaurants.

Came here with a friend for dinner on a weekday. No troubles getting a seat as it wasn't super busy. Pretty big menu and food wasn't too bad either. Got the beef carpacio and that was pretty good. Also a fish liver dish; wasn't a huge fan of it as it tasted like canned fish. Oysters and sashimi were nice and fresh so I'd recommend that. For rolls: got a mango paradise roll and a black sesame roll. My friend didn't like either of the rolls, though I enjoyed the black sesame one. Mango paradise wasn't that great as it had carrots in it; not really a fan of carrots in a sushi roll to be honest. Overall, enjoyed my time there, would come again.

It’s western style Japanese restaurant. Services could be better. The sushi tasted bad and it’s not fresh at all. Convenient location with lots parking space at Lansdowne Center.

I would come back, staff are nice and they know English. They can split the bill which is bonus. Our orders were coming out fast at first but slowed down and the vegetarian sushi came out last for some odd reason. Probably there were more customers towards our end of the dinner. I would definitely come back and try other dishes.

Huge selection of dishes. Good food. Fairly reasonable prices for lunch sets. Reasonably quick service though I waited like 15 mins to pay at the end (but they were quite busy), even though they have bell service. Two things of note: (1) the tipping POS conflates the your subtotal with your total with tax combined. So if you're paying via percentage, you'll be paying on top of taxes, which isn't cool. (2) Secondly, tables are very sticky here and the layout is very strange. Tables are on top of steps, so you have to be careful when getting in and out of booths. This is especially inconvenient when you come with older patrons or those with mobility challenges. Other than that, this was a good Japanese place that I will return to.

The atmosphere of this restaurant is definitely what catches your eye first. Dark colours but great lighting. They have quite the variety of dishes but what I was most interested in was the whole fish sashimi. On the menu it says “please as your server for availability” so when our waitress came in I inquired and pointed to the item on the menu. Fish of the day was shima aji so we ordered it. On the menu it says comes with 2 courses with sashimi and hotpot and my mom doesn’t like raw items so we thought this would be perfect. Our food comes, I eat the sashimi while she’s eating the other things and then they take the fish bone away and bring it back fried. Confused, we asked another server if our hotpot was coming and he informed us that our waitress ordered us something else but with the same fish. On top of that, the froi gras nigiri fell apart when you picked it up. We were both disappointed and had to go somewhere else afterwards because my mom was still hungry. I’m not sure why our waitress put in the wrong order when I literally pointed to it on the menu, so I will not be back.

The food was pretty good but the service wasn't great. I notice a lot of take out orders so I assume they are understaffed like a lot of the restaurants now. We were pretty much ignored the whole time we were there. The portion size was also pretty small especially for what they charge. The good thing is there are a lot on the menu but this is not a restaurant that I will be visiting often

Soft crab wasn't soft at all, over cooked...dragon sushi tastes good, original mango sushi also tastes good...service overall is adequate, $$...at Lansdowne Mall, plenty parking spaces, wheelchair accessible...

Had my mom's 75th birthday party with 44 people. Staff especially Jimmy were very accommodating . Food was excellent very tasty. I will highly recommend this place to everyone!

Loved their special lunch combos from 11:30 to 3:00 pm. Their desserts are fancy & very good, esp the Uji macha parfait. I tried the teramisu w/ green powder on top & served in a cute cubed wooden box, loved the taste...but too small amount for $6. I thought there shd be more. Overall, the restaurant is really cool & good to frequent even on no occassion for me & my friend Cisa B.

Food was delicious and came at a good pace after ordering so we didn't have a whole table of food to eat and let get cold. Loved the kids meals that accommodated my son's food needs perfectly. Would definitely go back again and again. This was just lunch too.

The food is great! The kids love it because they can eat first and then go play...I heard there is a new dessert menu out so will definitely need to go try~

Great food and atmosphere.

This is a restaurant that no need to try. Food is plain, same as those small street fast food kind of sushi store, even not as good as those. Overpriced for sure, service is okay. Yeah, won't go back

Toku Japanese Restaurant is located in Lansdowne Centre, directly across from Earls (on the north side of the mall). It’s a surprisingly large restaurant with high ceilings and call buttons located on the tables (similar to what you’d find at many Korean restaurants). Being the polite and reserved Canadian people that we are, we didn’t even try to use the call buttons during our meal but we didn’t have to as service was pretty good and it was easy to get the attention of the servers.

Today I was at “Toku” dining with some friends. One suggested it, having been before and liking it enough that she thought it was worth my reviewing. Located in Landsdowne centre, there was plenty of parking and plenty of seating inside the restaurant. It is actually a lot bigger than it looks from the outside with entrances/exits that lead in and out of the mall and on to the sidewalk.

Toku Japanese Restaurant is located in Lansdowne mall in the same area of the food court. If you were looking for something a bit more elevated than dining at the food court, Toku might just be the right choice for you. The interior is well appointed – comfortable seating and modern (even the washrooms are nice).

Toku is absolutely one of my family’s favorite Japanese restaurants in Richmond area. The interior is spacious and clean. The food is delicious, authentic and fresh. What I love the most is that it’s kids friendly. They have kids utensils, kids meals, and even a play area to keep your little ones entertained while you enjoy the dining experience.

Here are some my favorite dishes at Toku:
1. Ahuri Charashi Don: the rice is nicely seasoned and the fishes are seared perfectly. Always fresh
2. Lobster Sashimi 2 courses: one of the best priced lobster sashimi ($45. Add Udon is $5 extra). The second course comes with Lobster Hot Pot. The soup comes with tofu, Chinese cabbage, vermicelli. The portion is huge and the soup is very flavorful.
3. Pork Katsu Don: the katsu is deep fried to perfection: crispy and tender.
4. Beef Yaki Udon: unlike many Japanese restaurants that make yaki Udon with Terriyaki sauce, Toku offers a very authentic taste of traditional Japanese Yaki Udon, using mentsuyu sauce, creating a perfect balance of savory and salt.
5. Unagi Don: the Unagi is tender and juicy. The portion is descent.

They also have amazing Japanese desserts that will fulfill your sweet crave. In short, all the dishes at Toku is very delicious and I will highly recommend this restaurant to everyone.

The Best A la cart that has all variety of rare features such geoduck, large uni, lobster sashimi and much more goodies to select.

The best Japanese dining experience that especially welcomes American Express credit card and all other cards.

This is number #1 on my list, if you have a chance, drop by,

10 Stars Rating.

Toku’s ambiance can be described in three words: vibrant, modern, and spacious. Conveniently located in the Lansdowne Centre, this restaurant is highly recommended for large gatherings. In terms of food offerings, Toku has everything you would typically see in a Japanese restaurant, but with more emphasis on chirashi dons. They have 14 different variations of these sashimi rice bowls!

Terrible experience!! They charge twice of our money! my friend wanted to pay my bill so they paid already without myself knowing and I paid again.Yet they also accepted my payment. In total, they accepted our payment twice and it was not cheap as well. We went back and want to argue and get the money back even with two receipts, they took the receipts away and did NOT give us our money back. DONT GO!

Went there for dinner. This was my first time to eat there. Overall food taste so so, but very pricey/small portion. (2 out of 5) Services are ok. (3 out of 5) Environment is very nice. (4 out of 5) A good place to eat occasionally, but not for daily.

I took my sister to this restaurant for dinner to celebrate her birthday. It looks pretty nice inside. The food was so so. We had beef carpaccio, some sushi, udon, duck breast. Its kinda expensive. I wouldnt want to come here again.

SunShine Roll $12.00 (3.5/5分)
這壽司卷的餡料有天婦羅蝦和牛油果,再在上面舖上煙三文魚及芒果片,吃起來很清新,唯壽司飯太軟不夠口感

Tonkatsu Lunch Set 吉列豬扒套餐 $13.00 (3.5/5分)
奉送味噌湯、前菜、白飯及甜品

Sukiyaki Lunch Set 壽喜燒牛肉鍋套餐 $13.00 (3/5分)
奉送味噌湯、前菜、白飯及甜品

The worst customer service ever I had in my life, 2 of us ordered 2 meals, my came within 15 mins. We asked the staff there where is the other one? They said its coming, so then we kept on waiting for another 15 mins. After I finished my, it still hasn't show up yet. We asked again, they looked at the computer and said OK its coming. One hour passed, still waiting, we asked for the manager (Edmond) and the manager (Edmond) did the same thing, asked us to wait. And we asked the manager (Edmond) to check with the kitchen, he said OK, but he didn't even go to the kitchen! So then we waited for another 5 mins and we were kinda pissed off already. The manager (Edmond) said "there's nothing I can do, what do you want me to do? If you still want it, you will have to wait, if you don't want it then I can cancel it". He doesn't even bother give us a apology. After a little while, finally it came, but the dish was cold! So then we complain again to the manager (Edmond) again. He said "I don't fxxking care! I work here and I have to deal with customer like YOU everyday! " ( he repeated twice) And I said its your attitude, not about the food. When we were going to pay the bill he said to us "you guys can leave and don't pay if you don't like the food! I will pay for you! " with a 😒 face.
I can only say that, for a high class restaurant , it's a shame to have a such shitty service like this.

Came here with my family using a voucher for a 4 person set menu meal for $88.88. Made reservations before coming only to come to the restaurant at our reserved time to be told that "there was a lot of walk-ins before we came". Um hello? Then what's the point of making reservations at all? Ended up waiting 20 mins for a table. Had to ask three times for someone to bring us tea. On the other hand, food was great. However we were looking forward most to the uni which was included in our meal but it was sold out already at 7:30pm! Everything was great tasting except the sukiyaki as the broth was too sweet. Overall, food was good but probably would not come back without the voucher.

Service: 2/5
Food: 4/5

We went over to Toku Japanese restaurant for a family dinner again. The last time we were here, Toku had just opened so it was nice to see how they’ve progressed since our first visit. Being that it was a family dinner, we went all out and were able to try pretty much all the items on the menu!

This restaurant is boiling hot and freezing cold, in terms of my experience. Beautiful space, almost too much service ie servers hovering around to snatch bowls before the chopsticks were set down, tea refilled umpteen times. The teaser was promising; assorted pickled vegetables in an explosion of color and artfully arranged, assorted textures. Then my main course chirashi sushi appeared before our beef sashimi appetizer. It was the most colorless sashimi ever, subsisting of pale pink salmon, beige tuna and pale yellow tamago. Where were the gorgeous toro slices, sprinkles of furikake, and other accoutrement I saw in previous photos? Did I get replacement c-line chef who couldn't be bothered to lay out the fish without flaps folded over and to slap the rice in the bowl so hurriedly that edges of spoon marks to flatten the rice were like multiple train tracks. It was 12:00 and the restaurant was empty. Then a perfect slice of dark and white chocolate mousse with a tiny spoon showed up to finish the meal. Hot and cold.

We came here for lunch on a Saturday. Since it was quite new, we decided to give it a try! We were greeted as soon as we stepped into the restaurant and the hostess sat us down at a nice booth. Overall, the place looked quite nice and clean. The waitress recommended us to try the lunch sets. They came with miso soup, rice, appetizers, and desserts. I chose the curry with tonkatsu on rice and my husband chose the salmon donburi. The tonkatsu and curry was pretty good. And my husbands salmon donburi came with both sockeye salmon and regular farmed salmon sashimi. The cuts were quite nice!

I think we would come back again. Service was pretty good! We didn't have to wait long for our food.

Words fail to describe how appallingly bad the service was when I came to Toku for dinner on a Friday night with a group.

We were in no rush so at first it barely registered at first that the food was taking a bit longer than normal to arrive. However, at around the 40 minute mark, after only one roll and one spinach gomaae came out for our group of 10 people, we asked the waitress if she wouldn't mind checking on the status of the other orders. Her response was: "What did you order again?". Again, because we were in no rush, we simply repeated our orders, thinking that she just wanted to confirm who ordered what so that when everything came out she would keep it straight.

Another 20 minutes goes by. Repeat of the same scene.

Another 10 minutes goes by. A few more orders come out. Repeat of the same scene again for the remaining orders still outstanding (which are most of them).

30 minutes later. Lather, rinse, repeat.

You get the idea.

By the time the very last person got what he had ordered, we were now well over 3 hours into dinner. A few of us had finished eating 2 hours ago (those lucky bastards who got their rolls and spinach gomaae!), while everyone else was either finishing their dishes which arrived at some point during the ordeal, or had to quickly wolf down their dishes which had just arrived. What did arrive was cold, hastily put together, and didn't taste very good or fresh at all, but at that point we could have been eating the nectar of the gods and it still wouldn't matter.

If the restaurant was jam packed, I would have been able to attribute some of the delay to the kitchen being overworked - not acceptable, still, but at least understandable. However, the restaurant was nearly empty and there were close to 15 servers hovering around doing absolutely nothing. So what gives? Did the waitress forget to write our orders down or give them to the kitchen 5 times? Was there a shortage of udon noodles in the kitchen that someone had to run out and buy more? Were we all part of some elaborate Japanese game show of "Guess When Your Dinner is Coming Out?". Your guess is as good as mine.

To add insult to injury, as "compensation" for the bad service, we were gifted with a handful of $10 coupons....if we spent over $50 . Do I really want to come again? Thanks but no thanks

Loved it. My son and i came to the restaurant last week, and had such amazing time! Excellent service and delicious food! Will definitedly come back.

Tako is one of the japanese restaurant you can taste best japanese food in Richmond, but the quality is not stable, sometimes very good, but someone just okay. Overall, still acceptable, especially for quick lunch. Been here over 20 times for lunch and dinner.
Tofuer
Favourite Japanese restaurant. Just went in for Mother's Day dinner. My husband and I both agree this is our favourite Japanese restaurant either in Richmond or Vancouver. It's somewhat pricy but the quality is far above than any other places we've been to. We went in with two young kids and they were nothing but welcoming and accommodating. Really exceptional food, fresh and delicate. We will definitely go back again.

Overpriced set lunch. Agatashi tofu $5 2.5/5 - decent but nothing special.

Toku Set (Sashimi, aburi beef, grilled fish) $22 - sashimi 3/5 beef 3.5/5 grilled fish 2.5/5 - I would say this set was the best value but still overpriced. The sashimi was similar to those in the sashimi set. I was expecting aburi beef nigiri not steak. It was cooked right but it didn't have enough marble. The grilled saba (mackerel) was salty like most of the other saba. There were quite a bit bones in the saba.
Sashimi & Sushi Set $18 2.5/5 - The sashimi was decent but the selection was the typical ones (no special sashimi).
Gindara Set (Black Cod Saikyou Miso) $16 3.5/5 - This set was the best of the 3. The black cod was flaky but oily.

The sides of all 3 lunch sets were the same: 2 pieces of yellow broccoli, green salad, miso soup, rice, and dessert. We got mango pudding that day. The pudding tasted fake with no pieces of real mango. I would be happier if it was ice-cream. The quality was mediocre and totally overpriced for what was being offered.

Service 3.5/5 - We were not sure if the hostess and servers were Japanese. The speed was lightning fast. Our food came very quickly and came to clear our plates as soon as we were done. The green tea was stronger than most of that from other Japanese restaurants. The quality and selection of the food were very typical. I did not have high hopes so I didn't get disappointed neither.
PS: You can get a free spider roll when you order more than $40 (with a coupon from the Chinese newspaper).

The worst omakase. We had a group of six people booked a table for omakase. We booked it a week in advance, the chef should have enough time to prepare food for us. However, the food was nothing special than ordering from the regular menu. Moreover the sushi were not fresh. We had six courses and none of them was good. With the money we spent on omakase, we could have a better meal ordering from the regular menu. We will for sure not coming back.
Eat With Sida
Overall, sushi and fishes qualities were above average but I wouldn't go for Robata again. One more thing, they served the Robata after the appetizers while we were still working on the sushi plate. The skewers were cool down when we start eating.

Disappointed.. Tried the lunch set menu at the new Japanese restaurant in Lansdowne Mall. Walked by and was attracted by the nice modern décor and lunch sets pricing is reasonable (average $15/each). Greeted by friendly staff right away and they have plenty of nice staff working during lunch hour. Hubby picked grilled black cod while I asked about the salmon sashimi on rice as I prefer wild salmon over farmed salmon. Server assured me it was wild salmon. Lunch sets come with miso soup, appetizer and dessert. Service was very quick and we got our miso soup and appetizer right away and not long after our lunches. The grilled black cod was OK, while my salmon sashimi on rice was interesting. Half of it was wild salmon and the other half farmed. And the rice was too cold and hard. Overall, the food was not good enough for a return visit.

Love, love, love this restaurant. I have been to Toku several times for dinner and more recently for lunch. We have had a cross section of food both from the sushi bar and the kitchen. The food was delicious!!! The last time we went, we ordered Tempura, Black Cod, Steak, Aburi Duck Breast and the Toku sushi. The fish on the nigiri ordered was extremely fresh and the pieces were thickly cut. Whatever the issues other people had with the sushi rice has been fixed because we had no complaints. All the dishes from the kitchen were excellent and everyone was extremely satisfied. We ordered the dessert special and it was amazing. There was a golden sugar ball with ice cream inside sitting on a half sphere of pudding with red beans and pomegranate . The plating of all the dishes were very impressive. It was food for the eyes as well as the taste buds. Quite a few of our dinner companions have been to Japan and one recently returned from a trip to Tokyo and everyone agreed that this restaurant was comparable to some of the high end restaurants that they visited there! It is nice to know that Richmond finally has its own authentic fine dining Japanese Restaurant. Compared to the prices that one would have to pay at a nice Japanese restaurant in Vancouver, Toku's pricing is quite reasonable! I will definitely be back!!!!

Love it and will definitely return!!!

Never Again. This place is gorgeous - a very classy looking Japanese restaurant with jazz playing in the background. The down side is Toku's menu. There is a lack of variety and all the items are overpriced. It was also difficult to understand and communicate with the waitress that was serving us. I ended up never receiving what I ordered.

Aggressive server.. Food was not so good... Even price is pretty high..
Server? Manager? She was looks like manager.. was so ignorance abt drinks & so aggressive to sell only expensive food... We will never go back to eat!!!

Impromptu visit - excellent service. Not a typical impromptu price scale but it was the day before a birthday so we decided to treat ourselves.

Excellent service, very attentive.

I had the $25 sushi 'set'. The nigiri was very fresh and because I figured the chef seasoned it with the right amount of wasabi, I only used soy sauce instead of my usual faux pas soy sauce and wasabi mix. It was delicious, best way to truly taste the quality of the seafood. But might be a bit more wasabi than some are used to getting.

We also ordered veg and prawn tempura for us and our toddler son. The tempura was pricier than we're used to but well prepared.

Miso was delicious, and not your typical salty miso (that I also like) that you get at all other sushi restaurants. This one had a nice depth to it as mentioned by a blogger review.

This isn't an everyday visit but nice to splurge on occasion or take people there for special occasions. Gorgeous space, excellent service, very fresh seafood.

Good service, food was okay. Definitely one of the best service restaurants in Richmond. However, the food was a little disappointing. The 3 of us ordered a table of food and the quality was okay. Not as bad as some people say here but not extraordinary either. But the environment was very nice and I will say the service was very good. A little pricey but might go back again
Taka_62
A beautiful place, bad menu. Very nice place, very good service, but for some reasons, they advertised they have 5 good japanese chef, but they don't have a good menu..,, i think all items are overpriced... I think i was checking the menu for more than 10 minutes while i was having my red wine( house red) and still can decide what to order. So I ended up ordering sushi combo for $18... Nothing special w/ what I ordered... But i would say the service was very good.... I dont think i will come back here... Was really disappointed with the menu.... They should check their menu again...

Most dissapointing Meal, downtown fine dining pricing, worse than all you can eat quality.. If you're looking for food quality WORSE than all-you-can-eat, this will be the place for you. The food quality here is absolutely terrible. The price they charge is equivalent to a downtown fine dining restaurant.... Bonus point for the great service, but otherwise, speechless..... Had to get Mc Donald's after this meal.
Luckyman
Below standard. The Japanese food here is definitely below Vancouver standard.

Don't mind paying more, but the quality of the food is not acceptable.

Service is good tho.
Inna.reyes
Expensive and terrible food.. This place was over priced and had very bad quality food, I ordered the duck and it was over cooked.I also tried many of their sushi rolls and the fish did not taste fresh at all. It is actually one of the worst places I have eaten for sushi you are basically just paying for the venue and the above average service.
Agean007
Great service. Horrible food. Sashimi contained tiny pieces of bone. Modern decor. The servers were great. They were very polite and attentive. However, the food was a big disappointment. Went there for lunch. Ordered 1 of each of the lunch bentos. The salmon sashimi contained tiny pieces of bone. The tuna sashimi had a fish scale stuck to it. Did not expect that from highly experienced sushi chefs (as advertised in the Richmond Review Newspaper). Ordered a hamachi sashimi. Quality was poor for the price. The cooked items were too salty in general. The portions were small overall. Will NOT go back. Food at Kiyo, Seto and Kiriri much much better!!!

Our extended family went to Toku for a family dinner a while ago at Toku because it opened recently and apparently they had 5 really good Japanese chefs there so we had to go try it out. Toku is located in Landsdowne mall where Sui Sha Ya used to be but upon entering the building you wouldn’t even be able to tell that Sui Sha Ya used to be there because everything on the inside looked so modern and posh. There were lots of stair cases everywhere and the seating was divided to allow for lots of privacy.

Toku Japanese Restaurant 德日本料理 is a recently opened new sushi joint that opened in Lansdowne Mall beside Earls. Toku took over the space that Sui Sha Ya 水車屋日本料理 used to occupy. I am so glad it is no longer AYCE!
