Review The Crab King - Richmond

Great location and food was so yummy. The soft shell crab was crunchy and juicy. Fish and chips were great too!
Chef Menajem Peretz
The food was ok, the location of course is great, they did’t offer inside tables although is ok under the new regulations and since was a cold windy day, was a bit hard to enjoin the food.

Absolutely amazing service and food. We enjoyed the cod and chips, spicy chicken strips, yam fries and their wonderful salad. We have eaten at several places along the water and you cannot beat The Crab Kings lightly battered fish. Prices are amazing and not at all oily. Thank you for the wonderful meal and fantastic friendly service. The stop was a highlight to our birthday day outing. We will be seeing you very soon.

Food was meh...and service was meh as well. Nothing particularly exciting. The only saving grace was primarily the view. I did find the portions a bit small. I had expected slightly bigger...being close to the water (even to that of a fisherman's wharf) and all.

I tried to order halibut fish and chips (four pieces), which I was going to split with a friend; however, the very nice young woman in the order window said they were no longer offering it, even tho it was on the menu at the top of the ramp. I’d give her service, brief as it was, five stars for her sweet, kind manner. I went back to my friend and we decided on new orders. When I returned to order again, I received a blast of smoke in my face about halfway down the ramp. It came from a smoker sitting right by the order window, so I was forced to go back up the ramp to my friend. If I had been alone, that would have been a deal-breaker, but my friend wanted to try the place, there was no line-up, and it was significantly cheaper than its neighbouring competitor (which had a long line-up), Pajo’s, so she volunteered to go down and order for both of us. When my friend returned, she told me that the smoker was kitchen staff. So that guy gets zero stars for manners and common sense. The food itself (salmon fish & chips) was … adequate … and the fish portions tiny. My friend gave her halibut 2 stars; I would give my salmon and chips maybe 2-1/2. The prices look great until you see what you get for them. Not an experience I will repeat.

The King Platter was very good, however they should warm people how much it will cost. It was a bit of a shock to get a bill for $180.00 for the platter and 2 iced tea!

Yikes, where to start? Service was sloooow, considering there wasn't a huge lineup of people. Was quoted around 15 minutes for the food to be ready, but it was more like 40. Truthfully, that wouldn't be quite the big deal if the food was delicious. Sadly, however, that wasn't the case. While the namesake deep fried crab was "good", according to my dining partner, even though it was small and oily. My fish and chips, however... Ooooh boy. Seriously, it was so full of oil i thought the United States was going to invade it. Words cannot describe how oily it was. I was genuinely sick for 24 hours after, and I virtually never get sick after eating out. Additionally, there was more batter than actual fish. The only reason it's not a one-star review is because the fries were delicious. Very tasty, and they reminded me of the Costco food court fries (perhaps they were)?

This was my first time eating here and I was pleasantly surprised! We had the cod and chips as well as the squid. The portions were fair. The price was good. The food was delicious and the service was great. You should eat here!

Worst place ever!!<br/>Took one hour and 40 minutes for our salmon fried rice to be served. <br/>I asked the waitress 3 times after waiting for one hour and she says to me "what do you expect when you eat out at a restaurant, you have to have patience and wait for your food"<br/>I told her it should not be 1 hr and 40 mins. She gave me a dirty look and walked away. <br/>When we finally got the fried rice she was also holding a second plate with her other hand and it was for the table beside us. Seems to me like they waited to make all the orders at the same time and that's what was taking so long. Will never return to this restaurant. And also the old owner has retired and now they have a new owner that makes the crappiest food ever! Expensive and sucks with horrible service.

That was an expensive meal. MP for the king platter was $160 I believe, the Alaskan king crab legs where $45 (for only like 3 legs?????) I wouldn't recommend their poutine. It didn't have real cheese curds and their was a strange taste that I couldn't make out. There was barely any crab on the dish. Sources tell me that the scallops here are frozen!! So would not recommend those, and if you ask the owner she'll tell you they're fresh.

For Sheepie’s friend’s birthday, we were celebrating it at the Crab King in Steveston. The organizer (the birthday-star’s girlfriend) had some groupons, but they also seem to know the owners, so I think we got extra. The organizer had a commotion with the staff there as the timing of the reservation was screwed up. Not sure who’s at fault, but it was ok, as we (about 16 of us) went to the nearby Waves to just chit chat to kill time.

On a bright sunny weekend, we went to Steveston with the idea of getting fish & chips. But we sidetracked as decided to check out the Crab King.  It’s a casual seafood restaurant floating on the water, just off the shore in Steveston, a stone’s throw away from Pajo’s. The menu is a fairly eclectic assortment of seafood dishes, including oysters, clams, scallops, prawns, crab cakes, fish & chips, and a heavy emphasis on fresh crab.  There were several tanks of live dungeness crabs by the entrance to the restaurant.

Did someone say crab poutine? Real bits of crab?! Oh yummy! Despite all the negative reviews, and man there are some real bad reviews about this place, I thought I could shed a little light on their take out window. We all know what poutine tastes like. But to have a rare item like this one is definitely a treat! If your like me who loves to snack while walking in good weather... Or wet weather here in vancity, then this particular item is nice! I'll be honest the reviews looked pretty bad but I'm coming here in the late spring for a dinner. Till then I'll do a update and see how food and service is.

Terrible service. I don't often walk out, but they didn't even offer us a drink after 20 minutes. We told the waitress we were ready to order, and she pretended not to hear us.<br/><br/> Serving staff were running around panicked, despite the restaurant only being half full. Lots of housekeeping and shuffling of dishes, not much actual waiting tables. <br/><br/>Left without ordering and went to the pub instead.

Bad choice, will not return. Went for the first time today. food was mediocre, fish n chips however were almost unpalatable. Dry, overfried and had to take off the breading to finish it between the four of us. We didn't see any crab on the menu and so we asked if they had crab dishes...the server didn't inform us of any other option than the king crab leg platter while they apparently had all sorts of dungenous crab as well. Anyway, the crab leg platter was served with french fries instead of pan fried potatoes and they only informed us and apologized after we asked why we didn't get potatoes and others did...thinking we would not notice. Also no tongs or plates were served with the platter so we had to literally use napkins as plates. The other crab dishes that came out after our order all had pan fried potatoes!! so we felt cheated and that it was unreasonable not to at least TELL US it's different. The other tables were also served with utensils and plates. The worst thing you can make your customer feel is unimportant. Also found their items overpriced on top of not being very tasty.<br/><br/>Overall a bad experience, did not feel great with the differential treatment and lack of information. Will never go back.

Crab king food. The worst fish and chips ever ! Greasy overcooked and inedible. <br/>And it was a long wait for bad food.

Crab dinner. The crab dinner was okay. Fried rice was raw and tough. When we told the server he went and told the young cook he became defensive and said we cook it dry. Yes I understand but not raw rice!! I would go find a real nice Chiness seafood and have a better crab dinner consider price , the cook, cleanliness , service as special no one came to us and talk to us in person.

Bad, really really bad. Before judging any meal I eat, usually I wait for the aftertaste. If after finishing eating I find myself actively seeking lifesavers or halls, I know it is a bad meal. And this is exactly what happened to us today after lunch at this restaurant. <br/><br/>I took my family today there for lunch. we ordered two crab burger sandwiches (I don't know why they call it that), seafood salad and one order fish and chips. Oh, two beers and two pops. Beer came with warm glasses, we asked for chilled glasses, "we don't have them" the waitress said. The glasses had a fishy smell. so we drank from the bottle. The crab burgers came, but they had nothing to do with crab, nor with burgers. No taste what's so ever. The bread was burned (not toasted), there were slices of avocado and cucumber (the best thing in the sandwich). The fish and chips was ok, typical fish and chips. We had to wait 20 minutes after these dishes were served for the seafood salad, we asked the waitress to cancel it, "it is being made" she answered. It is always a good sign when a salad is "being made" in a restaurant. So waited, 10 more minutes and salad came. Five tiny shrimps sitting on top of five cucumber slices, next to a bed of salad topped with shredded crab meat mixed with God knows what?? The dressing was sweet, the presentation was horrible. For a seafood restaurant to serve such tasteless seafood salad and even worse, crab sandwiches, is a disgrace to even the cheapest seafood eatery. And it is not cheap either.

Less than average food server with a bad attitude. Now I would like to say the female front room staff were great. We ordered lemon sole fish and chips, it was under cooked, I have been eating fish and chips my whole life, being English I have tried the best in the world. When a customer says that its not cooked because the batter is still raw don't argue. To add insult to me they charged me for it and wouldn't take it off the bill even though it wasn't touched. <br/>So to the guy serving us Boo you, I did find his antics amusing when he told the family of 5 not to sit at a certain table because he wanted to seat a larger group there just in case a large group would come in... If you don't like people sitting where they want then take down your please seat yourself sign...I found that to be really rude and so did the family of 5 sitting next to us.

Reasonably priced!. Delicious, and pretty much the cheapest place to get a whole crab I've ever seen. Not very fancy - you order at a counter and they bring you your food - but the location is nice and of course the food tastes good! Recommended.

HORRIBLE FISH + OVERPRICED. We arrived around seven pm, allured by the nice ambiance of the dock-side restaurant. My girlfriend ordered a salad while I ordered their special of the day. I was GREATLY DISAPPOINTED. The grilled halibut along with a side of salad went for $15.50 without tax. However, what I ended up getting was two measly pieces of halibut, overcooked completely and served with an extremely salty gravy. The fish was mediocre, bland, and tasted like rubber. It was the worst fish I have ever received from a restaurant. How do you fail to completely mess up two pieces of (what looks like) frozen halibut?Their "salad" consisted of some sorry pieces of lettuce mixed in with what looks like mayonnaise. All in all, it was absolutely HORRIBLE. Please avoid this place at all costs.

Delicious whole crab!. I was in Steveston with a friend, hoping for a nice whole crab entree. We were walking around and decided to take a peek at this restaurant's menu. We ordered the "Chili pepper crab" and a bowl of salmon fried rice. The staff were very nice, and food came out at a nice pace - our crab came first.<br/>**Note: The crabs in their live seafood tanks seemed very lively and fresh. A few of them were trying to get out of the tank. (This is what you want to see, not tanks full of dying / dead creatures.)<br/><br/>The presentation is very nice, with delicious pan fried veggies/chili flakes /herbs/onion crumbs covering parts of the crab. Flavoring seeped into the crab very well, and it was a pleasure to eat. This was $25 for a large crab with a good amount of meat. Very fresh, no unpleasant tastes. Not too oily at all, but I would warn you to not eat too much of the leftover onion/herb crumbs unless you can handle it. :) Definitely a treat for the eyes and mouth!<br/><br/>The salmon fried rice was quite good - Salmon flavorful and not overcooked. Generous amount of the fish, although I don't completely remember the other ingredients. Delicious pieces of egg, of course... A very nice bowl to share with someone! <br/><br/>PS: I'm not sure why another user wrote a review based on his POUTINE and said go to Pajo's instead. Pajo's menu is VERY different, and... seriously? Writing a review because you had a poutine at the place?? How incredibly helpful.

Just finished having Fish & Chips at Pajo's and wanted to try the crab cakes at this place. The waiters were nice but the crab cake was way too dried! It wasn't served hot though we were the only customers there at the time being. Quite disappointed and it was $10.50 before tax..

The brown chef is very talented and a fast worker(sorry that I dont know your name) !! My wife had saw him prepare the salads and the presentation was fabulous I really reccomend the salads as for the crab cakes we were really disappointed that it was not real crab meat....no one wants to pay ten bucks for burnt looking patties, but overall great service will be back soon to try the taste of the west coast !

Good food, fast service, and a nice view, The Crab King offers a variety of seafood dishes, my tip is to get a table as soon as you get there; it fills fast!!!

Water logged crab meat on crispy French fries topped with over salted brown gravy. Yes, save your money and walk over to Pajo's.

Fantastic!. We had some relatives from overseas come to Vancouver and wanted to take them to a unique place around town. Sushi and fish and chip places are a dime a dozen everywhere and we wanted to impress our visitors.<br/><br/>We chose The Crab King because where else can you get fresh crab on the waters. There must have been 12 of us but were able to fit on the boat or barge as its called, comfortably. There were kids as well in our group and I would say this place is very family friendly. <br/><br/>Since there was a few of us we ordered 5 of the "TASTE OF THE WEST COAST" and separate orders of crab. Surprisingly the food came earlier than we thought as I know crab can take a while to cook. But when it came out there was a ton of food! The special had everything, mussel, corn, shrimp, potatos, clams and more. It seems like it had everything under the sea. When the food came out I saw the eyes of the people in our group light up, and everyone just digged in. And the food was Fantastic! Really fresh! We had 4 year olds in our group and they loved the food, especially the little wooden hammer they used to crack open the crab. And of course the view is amazing being right on the waters. <br/><br/>Overall it was a great experience and everyone in our group agreed and well worth taking the trip out to Steveston. My relatives are back home now but everytime I talk to them they still mention The Crab King.

Save your money and go to Pajos. This place is terrible.

Confusing Hours. On their website it says they take reservations. I called to make a reservation for a Sunday, and I was told that they don't take reservations for weekends. I was fine with that, so I rearranged my plans with the 2 other couples that we were trying to coordinate and then called back to make reservations for a Tuesday. I was told that they still couldn't take my reservations because if it was raining, that they would be closed, and so I had to call back the day of to see if they would even be open. <br/><br/>What's the point then of saying that you take reservations if you don't even know if you'll be open? I really wanted to try this place but now I'm not so sure after being given the run around on just trying to even make reservations there.

Waited nearly half an hour for stale crab and throat scrapping dry mussles. It was too long of a wait and money not worth on the food they serve.

The Steveston Experience. I had the opportunity to try this place out on a nice warm summer night. It was perfect. Eating fresh dungeness crab with my hands, crunchy fries, and a light breeze. Typical Steveston mellow night out, love it! The place was new and clean, and the crab tanks were very nice as well. Only downside is the price, which I think is a tad bit expensive as our crab was kind of small... Will try again next time and hope for a bigger crab!

Amazing!!. This place absolutely rocks. We had parked in a parking lot adjacent from The Crab King. A quick overview of the 3 restaurants around resulted in us choosing The Crab King. It had the highest reviews and rating. <br/><br/>It was a beautiful experience. The best dining experience we had in Vancouver. The manager asked us if we wanted it sweet and we said yes. He picked a fresh alive crab out of the tank, and then put it back and went back in for a bigger one!<br/><br/>We were stunned with the customer service and attention. The crab was delicious and the crab poutine is a must-try. We will definitely be back next time we are in Vancouver. I highly recommend this place if you enjoy Crab and want a fantastic experience eating them right by the water.

Decent seafood by the pier. Had the Crab Poutine which was pretty much poutine with crab meat sprinkled on top.<br/><br/>Seafood chowder tasted alright. Had chunks of crab and mussels inside with the veggies and potatoes.<br/><br/>Deep Fried Mussels was delicious and quite big as the ones I eat at home are rather small.<br/><br/>Seafood Spring rolls tasted like regular spring rolls, couldn't taste the seafood flavouring at all.<br/><br/>Crunchy Fries were really good though, kinda reminds me of the McCain fries I sometimes get to eat at home.

This restaurant has a beautiful setting and great food. Although seafood isn't my favourite, I have become a lover of the sweet crab, especially on top of poutine! My 6 lunch companions also enjoyed their meals, the service and fair prices. Can't beat the homemade spring rolls.

The Crab King. I have eaten there several times. Had the crab, delicious. Food is very fresh. Recommend this to everyone who wants an experience to remember...

Yummy Seafood. Reasonable price.. The seafood chowder was delicious. I ordered a pot of shrimp and it tasted so fresh. The service was great. The heater at the dinning area keeps the seating area warm during a cold afternoon. The price is very reasonable. Really wants to try the crab and clams. Cant' wait to take my family there.

Fish and Chips is on of the essential summer foods. We found ourselves in Steveston and soon inside of The Crab King.

A whole Dungeness crab sits regally on top.<br/>Once extracted, its meat is firm with a sweet pop.<br/>Delicious is this prepared fresh crab,<br/>fishing from its shell, more meat I grab.

This restaurant is sort of a mix of self serve and being served (sounds really confusing I know). You line up to order the food yourself, and pay at the counter (like ordering at a food court). After you pay though, they give you a number and you find a table to sit at. Afterwards, someone will bring you utensils and serve you the food.

The Crab King is an outdoors restaurant on a floating platform. It has the concept of a fast food place where you order food at the stand and they will bring your food to you at your table. The outdoors restaurant is located right on the water, but when the sun goes down you better have a lamp next to you.

This was my first time ever to the The Crab King. I got the invite to this restaurant on a Facebook invite from a friend for the Grand Opening. I never heard of it, so I googled the restaurant and found some really delicious food porn online.
Every Day Is A Food Day
Crab King is located on the boardwalk of Steveston Village, and is apparently supposed to be floating, but it wasn’t exactly “floating” as I had imagined. Crab King is also sort of a self serve place. You place your order at the front, and then you take a numbered sign with you to the table of your choice. Then, they bring the food to you. Steph, Mica and I wanted to try a bit of everything, so we decided to share three plates. First up, the Crab Poutine we had all been talking about! It was basically a plate of fries topped with crab pieces and layered with cheese and gravy. Interestingly, the cheese wa

They serve "boardwalk food" such as Poutine with Crab Meat, ½ Dungness Crab, Seafood Spring Rolls, Miso Soup...etc. If I'm not mistaken, this place is run by an Asian family so that is probably where the Asian influenced menu is from. The other menu is for larger entrees such as "Feast for Two" or "A pot of Clams, Shrimps or Mussels".

Not only was the seafood fresh and delicious, the service was friendly and quick. Our whole meal came to be around $38 - not bad considering the amount we had, as well as it being fresh seafood. A large order of fish and chips at Pajo's is already about $15. In the end, we were more than satisfied with The Crab King and would definitely go again. Now when I'm at Steveston, I am going to have a hard time deciding between the two.

By the name alone, one might think that this restaurant was some Chinese place on Alexandra. But no, it’s a little dockside (dock-on?) restaurant in Steveston. Similar in form to Pajo’s fish and chips, the restaurant is more like a concession window floating on the water off the Steveston boardwalk, but the seating area is not quite so spartan — it’s got an awning to shelter diners from sun or rain, though I doubt people would be out and about in Steveston in the rain. We ordered the  Feast for Two , which includes a half crab, seafood spring rolls, miso soup, and fries. I’m not really a fan of miso soup, but I tried this one, and found it quite pleasant; less salty than typical sushi restaurant miso soup. I still found it a little incongruous in the context of the rest of the menu, though. Fries and a western-style crab preparation paired with miso soup and spring rolls bring the word “fusion” to mind, but without the accompanying harmony and playful, well, fusion between cooking styl

I separated the inedible clams; it turns out, more than half of them are a lost cause. When I’m buying a pound of product, and most of it is not consumable, then that’s not cool.
