Review Hakkasan Bistro - Richmond

Ben Klein
Hakkasan is a great lunch place for small groups. It can easily sit 6 to 8 people. They have a good lunch menu and the food is flavorful. Parking is usually pretty good. Bathroom is reasonable clean. The interior is a bit mishmash. They have a counter for take out food.

Great restaurant, lovely environment and very tasty food! They have a wide selection of dishes and constant promotion of new items that definitely worth trying. Parking is also very convenient as it is located away from busy traffic, making a trip much easier. The servers Yvonne and Stephanie are also very helpful and attentive. They speak fluent English, Mandarin and Cantonese therefore communication is never a problem. I will recommend this restaurant to everyone.

This was the worse dining experience that I had. We had lobster and there was nothing for me to use except my hands to crack the lobster. End up got stabbed by the lobster. Then I asked for bandage. Then told waitress that you forgot to give me a cracker to crack my lobster. She didn’t apologize or nothing. At the end, paid the bill. I gave 9% tips, the waitress said it wasn’t enough tips. End up arguing in the restaurant..... so pathetic man !!

The ambience is very warm and comforting. I really enjoyed the Sea bass, Black bean chicken, and honey garlic spareribs on my last visit. I eat here at least 5 times a month as I work close by. They have great grab and go options for people working close by.

The location is quite out of way if you don't know the area. It's located North of Bridgeport on No. 5 Rd in Richmond. Intimate and charming , which is good. Being Thursday and a rainy night only less than 12 people during dinner time. Anyway, the soup came first, chicken with gourd quite good. The gailan with beef. The gailan crunchy and the beef tender and very good. The steam, salty chicken did not disappoint me either. Two more baked rice dishes also good. The lady is quite charming and this is the first ever I got a business card given to me in the restaurant.

(2017-09-23) Expensive, poor service, low-quality dishes, bad value. Regretably, my mom and I had a terrible experience at this restaurant so this review is quite negative. Sunday 7pm. After being seated, we waited 15 minutes for the menu. About 20 minutes later, I had to get out of my seat to flag the waitress down to order. No tea or water was provided until after we ordered (we’re almost 40 minutes in!). We ordered two mains: (1) Black Pepper Kobe Beef, and (2) Uni and Scallop. The appetizers (a simple bowl of soup and salad) took 30 minutes to serve even though the restaurant was nearly empty. The main course didn’t arrive at the same time; they were 15 minutes apart... at this price point, they should come at the same time. For $35 a plate, the food was disappointing. Plating was poor. The “kobe” beef (which I doubt) was salty and was just piled on top of fried rice. The two pieces of uni we received were brown (super low quality) and was also on top of a mound of fried rice. Overall, a disappointing and frustrating dining experience.

Delicious dishes with ingredients like foie gras, and lobster. Definitely worth a visit for high quality different dishes. Some items requires a days notice in prep

Very expensive for the cafe style restaurant. Quality of the food was terrible. The beef was of low grade and desert was a few days old cupcakes. Would definitely not be going back nor would recommend this place.

My all time favorite for Hakka Chinese food. Very surprised that they are not full on a Saturday evening. Service is very good. The restaurant feels like a higher fine dinning rather than a regular Chinese restaurant. Food quality is always excellent. But I would recommend you to check out their special menu online and pre-order when making the reservation.

Hakkasan Bistro Cafe, a family-run dining establishment, was opened in 2007 by a mother and her two daughters. We were warmly welcomed by the Hakkasan Bistro team to attend their specially organized Hakka Inspired Feast and Wine Media Event.

I was kindly invited by Yvonne, the Managing Director of Hakkasan Bistro for a Media Event of complimentary dinner at Hakkasan and wine tasting/tour at Canada Berries Winery (formerly Sanduz Estate Winery). Hakkasan, a modern Chinese eatery in East Richmond’s industrial area was established in 2007. It was definitely located in an area where you wouldn’t expect a restaurant. They underwent a nine-month restaurant makeover in 2013 and relaunched as the restaurant it is today. Hakkasan serves quality authentic Cantonese dishes with a new diverse menu selection, including Hakka inspired soul food, in addition to our tasting menus.

“Hakkasan” is a little bistro offering authentic Hakka-inspired soul food and Cantonese dishes prepared the “Wok Hay” style. They are a family-run establishment: a mother and her two daughters. They are best known from their multi-course tasting menus. Having family ties to the Hakka people and growing up hearing my relatives speak the dialect, I was highly curious to try the cuisine for myself. I am sure I have had some Hakka dishes growing up, but I wouldn’t be able to tell you this from that. I wanted to learn more and I wanted to start with food from “Hakkasan”.

Hakkasan Bistro Cafe, like its name implies, employs the cooking style of the Hakka people, also known as China’s gypsies and nomads. On the map, they originated from the southeastern Chinese provinces of Gaungdong, Fujian, Jiangxi and Guangxi. Some hallmarks of Hakka cuisine are stewed, braised and roast meats.
Mashed Thoughts
Hakka cuisine is a traditional rustic cooking style of the Hakka people, China's gypsies and nomads, found mainly in the southeastern Chinese provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi and Guangxi. Stewed, braised, roast meats, 'texturized' contributions remain central to Hakka cuisine; the cooking style emphasize simple but tasty dishes that focuses on texture.
Drunken Noms
As I’ve previously mentioned, I grew up in Richmond with super white parents. So despite the plethora of amazing Asian cuisine residing right outside my door, I never ate any Asian food growing up other than your stereotypical western fare (I will still defend the deliciousness of lemon chicken to my death though). And although my tastes expanded after I moved out on my own in my early twenties, I’m still woefully uneducated when it comes to many types of Asian cuisine. Hakka cuisine is just one of the many. So when Hakkasan Bistro in Richmond invited me to attend a media event at which they’d be serving a ten course meal including many Hakka specialties, I jumped at the opportunity to expand my culinary horizon. I invited Dexter along as my plus one, and off we went into the depths of Richmond’s industrial district at the northern end of No. 5 road.
Food Queen
I came here for a ChineseBites media dinner where a group of us was able to sample their signature dishes. What did I order?. Chef’s Signature Pork & Snow Fungus Soup in Young Coconut. The soup is served inside of a coconut, which made the broth taste amazing because of the mild coconut flavour.
Domo Is Craving...
tasted amazing and my personal favourite was the Gooseberry. Their staff was very informative in. terms of their history, their products & you can definitely tell how. passionate they were about their wines. I highly recommend checking them out. because they only sell their fruit wines at their Richmond winery. I will

I would like to thank Hakkasan Bistro for inviting me to their complimentary dinner and wine pairing media event. The restaurant is located in a primarily industrialized area in Richmond where nobody really notices it. Their culinary cooking style and traditional dishes originate from the Hakka culture with strong emphasis on using “wok hay”.
Every Day Is A Food Day
Another signature dish was the Whole Coconut Pork & Snow Fungus Soup. The soup is double boiled for over three hours with pork, snow fungus, and savoury broth. K liked how the soup had coconut flavour, but also that you could scrape the coconut on the side, which was soft enough to eat. It also came with a soy sauce and chives dipping sauce which helped flavour the chicken. K's only complaint was that the hole was a bit small, so a bit hard to eat, but nevertheless, one of the favourites of the night.

I loved the odorless garlic half lobster with jasmine rice. The garlic is processed to maintain its natural flavours but still be breathe-friendly. I especially loved the presentation of the dish. In addition, the jasmine rice itself was flavourful having absorbed the juices of the lobster.
Constant Cravings
Time for another Chinese Bites dinner! This time it was a 10 course meal at Hakkasan Bistro. The location is pretty obscure on No. 5 road just past Vulcan way. I would have never noticed this restaurant since I’m not in the area often. Unlike your typical Chinese restaurant, the decor inside is very modern and French? You wouldn’t be able to tell that it’s a Chinese restaurant if it wasn’t for the food. I noticed they also play pop songs lightly in the background.
Picky Diner
Thanks to Ray from Chinese Bites, I was invited to a 10-course feast at Hakkasan Bistro along with 17 other local foodies. The dinner was quite impressive! Although it was a little less 'Chinese Fusion' than I had expected, I definitely relished the dishes prepared by a talented and experienced Chinese chef with solid cooking techniques and culinary artistry. And Hakka, a cuisine that is similar to Cantonese cooking but tends to use more salt to bring bolder flavours, definitely deserves more recognition and a broader range of audience.

Located in an industrial area on No.5 Road in richmond near River Rd, going to Hakkasan is almost like visiting a secret underground diner. Once you are inside, it actually looks pretty elegant and tasteful.
Dreaming In Foie Gras
The restaurant is located in a pretty weird area but service and the food make up for it. I absolutely loved the braised pork hock!.......................................
Eating With Kirby
We started off with the Honey Roasted Pork Cheeks ($20). It was very well executed and tasted kind of like BBQ Char Siu except with pork cheeks instead. The honey flavour was more prominent and the meat definitely had more 'snap' to it than regular pork. All in all, I thought the food was fantastic and some dishes were truly one of a kind. I am super grateful to have been able to taste test Hakkasan's specialty dishes and I'll certainly bring my family back for more noms!

Hakkasan Bistro Cafe is located in a very obscure area in East Richmond close to Ikea and the International Summer Night Market. They are a family-run establishment opened in 2007 by a mother and her two daughters. Renowned for their tasting menus, Hakkasan aspired to refine and elevate the Chinese dining experience. After 6 rewarding years, Hakkasan underwent a big renovation in 2013 and recently relaunched with the re-opening of what is a now a trendy bistro cafe that offers a new diverse menu selection in addition to tasting menus.

But my recollections were blurry and last night was a good reminder for what I had forgotten!

Everything was pretty stellar especially the young coconut pork snow fungus soup! I would definitely come back to Hakkasan and take my parents here. Since a lot of their signature dishes require pre-order, it would be best to make reservations than to be spontaneous!

On a recent quest to select sinks for our new home, we passed by this small restaurant in a very industrial area of Richmond. I remember we passed it and I said, “Huh. Hakkasan.” And I was curious. However, being that I barely get to Richmond, I didn’t think about making a special trip out in the near future.

I had passed this restaurant a couple times when I was lost in the area and have always wondered about it. Hakkasan is a hidden gem with it's delightful savoury dishes. Serving items that are not too common place here in Vancouver, it's worth the drive out. The prices are a little higher than most places, but a great idea for celebrating or treating guests.

One-liner: Niche Chinese restaurant that has a nice modern feel to all of its dishes with some A+ plates

Highlight: Braised Pork Hock

Recommended for: Nice family dinners with modern Chinese influences

Would I go back? Yes.

Check out my blog for the full review!

It was my first time dining here and I was impressed by the food. A few highlights of the night was the Young Coconut Chicken Soup, braised pork hock, and honey roasted pork cheeks. The other items were good but didn't stand out as much as the 3 dishes i mentioned. The prices are a bit on the higher side, but its delicious.

Curried Seafood / Tiger Prawn cocktail. Curry seafood is very tasty but too spicy for me

-----11 May, 2015-----

Satay Lobster On Noodles. It's pretty tasty even it's 2 baby lobsters

Overpriced for cheap-quality food. Had dinner here after reading a good review on online newspaper review for their food. Worst mistake ever. Never trusting online newspapers again.

Singaporean curry beef tastes more like fast food curry beef. It was essentially 50% chunks of fat and 50% meat in an already small enough bowl, nothing special and definitely overpriced.

Pork neck meat definitely not worth $20 for both quantity and taste. Tastes just like BBQ pork, except with quite a bit of fat in each slice of pork neck meat and very few slices on the place. We've had waaayyyy better at other restaurants. And the garnish was just a piece of kale and some random western vegetables...gave us a very "cheap quality" feel even just looking at it. And the taste just confirmed the looks.

Their "vegan fake duck" appetizer for $7 was just 4 small fish paste balls wrapped with bean curd tofu and deep fried, and VERY cheaply paired with the thai sweet chili sauce that you can buy a whole bottle for like $2 at the grocery store. Garnish is the same as above, just a piece of kale and some other random vegetables. Again, very cheap looking and in taste too. I could get a small tub of fish paste from the supermarket and make a whole plate of my own for $4.

Their pumpkin pork pot rice...pumpkin isn't expensive to begin with and I was expecting mashed pumpkin puree in the baked pot rice, like I have had at another restaurant in the past. But it was literally just small diced pieces of pumpkin (like diced carrots) very scarcely scattered on top of the rice and of course, another small bowl. This was ~$15.

For the price I am paying, I can get much better Chinese food elsewhere. TOns of resturants in Richmond to choose from. I get that they are trying to do some fusion foods, but it's not authentic Chinese and it's not good enough for Western-Chinese fusion either.

And they are trying to make the restaurant "high-class" but fail miserably at both decor and presentation of food. The decor just looks trendy for the younger crowd and the plastic chandelier lamps can't fool a good eye for high-quality furniture. But their prices are very unreasonable for what they serve.

Customer service was excellent, but that doesn't make up for the poor quality of food and overpriced menu. If this is what they continue to serve, they need to re-evaluate what their food is worth.

Just ok. I and 2 friends went there for lunch for the 1st time. We ordered 3 dishes.
clayport rice is ok, sweet & sour pork - too sweet and vinegary, salted chicken leg on rice not salty enough
We also bought some take-out $1 dessert pudding on promotion - sorry it is kinda awful like suger mixed with water. Their service is pretty good. I am a bit confused with their idenity, I am not sure it is a HK cafe or high end restaurant. The interiors is comfy. They have some high end menus. However, if the basic dishes' tastes are just so so why I would try their high end items.

整餐總共吃了$86加幣(含稅與小費),說其是地雷並不是花費的問題,而是非常不值得;

Hakka. Really??. OK, first of all, how authentic is a Chinese restaurant with a website that does not have a Chinese version? Then, the menu, very few items listed are Hakka. So, to me, this is just a wannabe.

Bad food bad service

Went there for the surf and turf dinner for four. Very skimpy with their proportion. Charged us an extra 3.50 for changing the dessert to one bun instead of what they said was a dessert valued at 7.90 for two people which was just a bite of jello. So basically got charged 7 dollars for a bun that usually costs 7.95 for two. Ripoff.

Fusionyyy. Been here 5 times...alot of the dishes are borderline fusion. had the foie gras here with balsamic reduction a couple of times and it was real good. also liked the curry stuffed whelk and chilled jellyfish/faux shark fin salad. the abalone in sauce was good too and so was the hainanese chicken served chilled. not really into where this restaurant is situated tho...it's located by an industrial area which gets rather dark and desolate on fall/winter nights.

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. We did the 5 course tasting menu for $29. A bubble tea restaurant serves better food and you get more for your money. No joke. They scam you into coming to their restaurant and once there, you are given the menu again with the ability to upgrade each course for an additional $5. It took them 30 minutes before they gave us water and it took an hour for the food to come out - which when it did, didn't come out all at the same time. Horrible food service. I don't know where they got "contemporary" from. Nothing about their service, design, plating, or food says contemporary. Did the 5 course tasting menu for $29 and here is what I got.

- "Jumbo Tiger Prawn Cocktail" - 3 frozen shrimp slathered in kraft ranch dressing on lettuce. RANCH DRESSING! Who does that?! Also, one of my shrimp had gone bad, black in coloured and was noticeable so - and they still served it! When i told them about it, they kindly took it back and replaced my entire order - which was nice of them - with one whole shrimp! Uhh, thanks?

- "Kobe Beef Lollipop in slow cooked tomato sauce" - was not kobe beef. If it was, i'm sure they mixed in a small portion with regular beef just so they could call it so. They put so much of that sauce on the meatballs, probably to mask that fact. Cafeteria meatballs taste better. You did put it on a stick. I give you that much, Hakkasan.

- "Cream of Neptune Seafood Soup" - This soup was campbell's cream of mushroom soup with chunks of imitation crab chopped in. I'm not kidding. It didn't taste like it campbell's soup, it really was Campbell's cream of mushroom soup. WTF?!

- "Jumbo Sea Scallops on Silk Tofu, Jasmine Rice" - It was basically one scallop, cut horizontally to look like 4 scallops on top of tofu with a bowl of white rice. Seasoning? They opened a jar of black bean sauce and put a spoon on. And there you have it! My other friends who ordered "Wok-seared angus beef on rice" got cuts of beef on rice with teriyaki sauce. Really.

- "House Dessert" - was coconut pudding. It was pudding with a slice of can peach on top.

So as you can see, the food speaks for itself. Oh. Here's a hilarious note. They had a sign on their table saying that they were environmentally conscious because they reused their cutlery. Um, like all other restaurants? Good for you!

Waste of money. Absolutely overpriced food. Had the tasting menu last night which consisted of two appetizers and a soup, entree, and a dessert. I was appalled when I saw the salad that was served. Parma ham salad... No "high end" restaurant should serve this. It's embarassing to eat and look at. It was a crispy green salad with thousand island and white vinegar dressing. I also found a few pieces of pickled radish and carrots. Needless to say the salad was bland and odd and just not good. Second appetizer should have been butter escargots but since they sold out we got lobster ravioli instead. Yay?! It was a soggy and bland mess topped with canned cream of mushroom soup as a sauce. I believe the ravioli can be found at Costco. Tried the Papaya soup and ginseng with chicken soup. They tasted almost identical in flavor and were super salty. The entree was mediocre. Tried the eggplant with the fish. Nothing I can't find at a cheaper Chinese fast good joint. Last was a coconut pudding for dessert. Perhaps the best item on last night's menu. This restaurant fails as one that serves high end Chinese food. All you are paying for is the somewhat ok ambience and ok service.
Nat
Overpriced for the quality, they attempt this fusion-contemporary concept, which is suppose to 'high-end'. but beyond the high prices, everything else falls short of a highend experience. for example, the waitress suggested a wine and we asked her why. she actually didn't know anything about wine or pairing, only that it's on special for 19$. classy. like most regular fare Chinese joints, the loo needs attention.
Jill
Over price chInese food . there's lots of Chinese food around such like Kirin , Jade or Amigo are doing better food than this ! service just ok . Chicken was too salty and not tasty . The Chinese soup taste like water . Lobster overcooked .. Overall just ok . Don't go If u want to waste money and time

Unique Dining Experience!. Hakkasan is tucked away in an industrial complex, probably the best kept secret in our little city of Richmond it being in an area away from traffic congestion, and offers ample parking. Takes away the frustration of circling for spots in Richmond`s crowded malls and traffic concentrated in the centre! Very smart of them I must say!

Service is top-notch! Servers speak fluent english ... unlike most chinese restaurants, communication is not a barrier here, some I hear speaking cantonese and mandarin too, very multi-lingual. Servers thoroughly introduce courses, and any questions we had were answered with a friendly and helpful attitude.
Food - there`s such a wide range and everything is handled with care! Quality is what I care about. Doesn`t matter how much you give me, if it`s not good, it doesn`t matter -- price only matters so much! Some things are worth the price. There`s tasting menus, there`s a la carte .. pretty much offers a little bit of everything! I would say the true value lies in the tasting menus. If there`s anything allergies or things you can`t or don`t eat, they offer substitutions (some at a charge, depending on what you want). We pre-ordered the Ancient Style Salt Baked Chicken -- which was so worth every penny! They gave us an overview of how it was prepared prior to plating it! The lobster with garlic is a yummy and fun dish with plastic gloves to assist us! Then there`s the kobe beef! It`s cubed and booked perfectly. I asked why it is that they cube it rather than serve it as a steak, and said that by cubing it (size of a dice) it allows the beef to be cooked evenly over high heat and retains the quality of the beef. That`s very important! The black pepper adds a hint of zest to the natural flavor of this marbled beef! Very impressed that they treated this expensive piece of beef with care!
Then there`s desserts...which we were told are all homemade. Lemon Cheesecake was a surprise...you know it being served at the Chinese restaurant and all... but it was light and refreshing...not heavy or filling like most american style cheesecakes. Yum! And the Red Bean Buns..not your typical dimsum ones! They`re shaped like hedgehogs! So cute!

OK...so my verdict...this place is worth the drive, but do call ahead as they are bistro-size restaurant and pre-ordering special tasting menus will minimize the wait time! We finished our 8 Course tasting in less than 1 and a half hours! Very Impressed!

Disappointing. Having read all these wonderful reviews, I was looking forward to an intresting and tasteful lunch. So very dissappointed.

This was a barely remodeled business park coffee shop. You know, the place where the local workers go for a cup of soup and a sandwich. The problem starts from the moment you walk in. Nothing urban modern about grey painted floors and vinyl bench seating. Yet, it billed itself as a wondeful, urban, new and fresh Chinese restaurant.

We went for lunch. Splurged by ordering the Kobe beef. Sad little pieces, probably around 1oz for $40. The $18 eggplant dish was just chunks stir fried with chili oil. Add rice, tea, and a tip for a $75 lunch for 2.

I probably would have enjoyed a cheap burger for a tenth of the price.

No recommendation here.

Restaurant not where you expect it. I had been meaning to try a Chinese restaurant in Richmond for a while, but was wholly to lazy and scared to drive out there until a few Friday's past.

My wife was working late at YVR and I offered to meet up with her after work to spare her the Olympic seperation pangs... yes she cannot live without me :)

I scoured the reviews and landed on Hakkason Restaurant it sounded great, we were not let down.

Followed the directions from the airport and it was a foggy night and as we turned onto the road. It looked like the road carried on for miles... but it was a road with an industrial estate surrounding it., it did not encourage me.

After finding the place and breaking a few traffic laws, we entered a refined and quiet dining room where they sat us in a quiet corner for two. Wow first thing done right very rare.

The manager/owner came over to us and spoke enthusiastically about the menu and wine - fanatastic second move. It just kept getting better.

We both ordered the Dine Out set meal of smoked salmon, soup, lobster, kobe beef and dessert. Lets just say for $38 you can skip the dessert and have a fantastic meal.

The smoked salmon was good and had interesting dressing... light and simple.

The double boiled soup - the name filled me with dread and after I asked the waitress what it was my fears were not allayed - Chefs choice. So I waited ... it was very good.

The lobster was cooked to perfection - lightly cooked in broth it was firm but tender and was a lovely treat.

The kobe beef was spot on very tasty and little to worry anyone about.

The dessert .. lets not mention it, it was a basic French concoction that did not work.. alittle out of our field of expertise shall we say.

Overall, good meal and will be going back

I didn’t like Hakkasan because the food was okay at best. Aside from the salad, the cuisine at Hakkasan is more defined (being Western or Chinese) than Chinese cuisine with a twist. The dessert, lobster, and chowder were Western while the only Chinese dish was the rice (the item that I actually liked).
Mary Sheridan
Hakkasan offers authentic Chinese cuisine with a contemporary twist. The reason for the visit this day was to try out their famous seasonal tasting menus. The menus change with the seasons, and they range from 4 to 6 courses. The menus range in price as well, from $36 to $118. It depends how fancy you wanna get. The menu has a good amount of variety. If the tasting menus are not your cup of tea, there's always the a la carte menu. They also have a fantastic wine list. Some dishes that should be sampled are: The wok-seared Kobe beef in black pepper - This is a house specialty. The beef is tender and juicy and the sauce is so thinck it's almost like a gravy. It's amazing. It comes with string beans and cauliflower and it's one of Hakkasan's signat
