I recommend this place if you have a smaller party (2 – 4 people). Despite the unexciting name of the restaurant, their specialty Soy Sauce Chicken is worth checking out and makes a great Chinese New Year dish. I like their other chicken dishes as well, although they may be more suitable if you have a keen palate for Cantonese food. The Deep Fried Squab makes a great alternative for chicken, although it is a little pricier. For greens, the Pea Shoot Stir Fry with Garlic is well executed. The price here have gone up a lot the last year. However, it is still a good choice if you don’t have a big party for largely portioned dishes.

This place is Chinese fast food. Their Haianese chicken was very good. Service was typical of Asian restaurants. Overall, the food was good, price was good and the place was pretty busy.

Free Range Chicken Menu

An early Sunday lunch - a table for 2

Tried their Free Range Chicken Set Lunch - half FR Chicken (we chose Empress FR Chicken, supposed to be treated with wine), came with a bowl of chicken soup (you can substitute the soup w. a drink), a plate of Bean Curd with Veggies, 2 bowls of rice.

Overall taste was ok.  It may be my own opinion that I do not like their chicken to be served cold directly from the fridge.  Plus, I could not find any 'wine' taste in the chicken at all.

I would prefer going to Prata-Man.

For the lunch special, you can have a soup or a drink. Ben opted for the daily soup. The daily soup of the day was pork bones with red carrot and green carrot. We had the Chicken Flavoured Rice instead of plain steamed rice. We also ordered a second lunch special to share. The above is Goat Brisket/Tendon on Rice. This is usually eaten in the winter and it is usually served in a hotpot. For the lunch special, it is served directly on the rice itself. The meat was tender and we love the sauce on the rice.

We had lunch at Specialty Chicken Chicken & Wonton House on Ackroyd Road. We ordered two dishes to share. The first item was Halibut Hot Pot. The halibut was slightly crunchy as they were deep fried before cooking in the hot pot with lots of onion and green onion. I can just eat rice with the onions alone with the sauce that sticks to the onions.

"Can I go trick or treating Dad?" "What? No. Trick or treating is a waste of time. And, it's dangerous. Someone might try to poison you.". "I'm turning 20 in a month Dad." ~ Yes I see the irony in this statement ;). "You act like you're 14.".   Since my dad didn't let me go trick or treating, he made up for it by taking me out for dinner in Richmond!! Pretty good trade off IMO :D

We were planning on going to Top Shanghai, but when we got there they were closed...we were tired and hungry by then, so we just defaulted to Specialty Chicken & Wonton House next door! (Which turned out to be a pretty good decision.)

The place was packed when we got there! We had to wait 5 mins for a seat ~ but we were seated promptly at a booth, which I was really happy about.

For some weird reason my dad felt like splurging that day...on $3 oysters! :O
So out of character for him! This is coming from a guy who eats at Kent's Kitchen all the time ~ But don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with eating at Kent's ;)

Where's the wonton?. For a restaurant that calls itself a wonton house, I don't see a lot of wonton options. Aside from a lot of squab dishes, the menu looks similar to most Chinese restaurants.

The friendly service (rare in Chinese restaurants) are quick and efficient. The servers dart efficiently from table to table, as organised as bees in a hive. Our server speaks no English--and when I say no English, I mean NONE. I ordered off the menu by numbers but she didn't know any of the numbers. Fortunately, I speak Cantonese, otherwise, I'd have to point at the menu and grunt. No worries, your food will still get to you.

The food here looks a little different than the norm. The egg foo yung sits in a round dish/bowl, and looks a bit like a quiche. The top layer tastes a little crispy while the innards are ooey, gooey good. I would have liked to see a bit more barbecued pork but what's there tastes fine.

The roast pork comes with wonderfully crisp skin and great flavour. The meat is not too fatty, which can often occur because the roast comes from the pork bellies.

The curry vegetables have a bit of spice, but not enough to intimidate the mildest of eaters. The vegetables taste crunchy and cooked well.

With two dishes ordered, you get the rice and a bonus bowl of chicken feet broth. A lot of people I know won't want to eat the feet--at least taste the broth, it's delicious. Dessert comes with dinner too, which is a sweetish bean bowl.

Yummy!. We got 3 dishes, rice and sweet soup for only 30$. The chicken was very good and the pork soup was like my mom's cooking. The soy sauce chicken was good but the garlic/onion chicken was the bomb. The skin is perfect! This place taste great and very good price. GREAT cantonese style food!

I have to be honest that every time I planned to try this restaurant, I couldn’t help myself to pass by it and go to the Shanghai restaurant next to it. The signage is actually pretty attractive since not many restaurant use chicken as their theme. Ching Pin Free Range Chicken is one of their signature. Nicely done but not very outstanding since there are lots of restaurant in Vancouver serve yummy chicken dishes… The price is reasonable. Everything is good, though not outstanding.

Recommend to those of you who love chicken.

After six months of relentless recipe testing, SCWH has modernized two traditional Chinese dishes to suit today’s palette: Chinese Roast Pork & Peking Duck. Gone is the excessive saltiness and greasiness that leave us feeling gross.
