Review Manzo Itamae Japanese Restaurant - Richmond

Good food. I liked everything I ate, but everything is so costly for the size. Likely there prices are similar for trendy izakayas in the Greater Vancouver. Probably same dishes, but prices increased due to inflation (due to pandemic). Service was ok. Host was a little slow to seat us and I think they almost gave away our table to the next 2-seater that came in after us as we were seated in the waiting area out of view. Servers were quick to clear dishes but not refill tea or check to see if we wanted more dishes. This may be the difference in training between Western and Asian restaurants. Parking was plentiful in their free parking lot (shared with other businesses).

Freshest, best tasting sushi I've tried yet but with the price to go with it. Great place to go for a night out with a partner. Not for those with smaller wallets.

Ate at manzo today, with my family. The sashimi was definitely not fresh. The spicy scallop roll is also not fresh, it was doused in hot sauce in order to cover the lack of freshness. Here's the best part, the udon soup had a COCKROACH in it and the manager NEVER came to apologize. Instead we were given a 5% discount on our bill. I'm sorry 30 dollars isnt enough for me to drink cockroach soup. OVERPRICED, not fresh, would not recommend.

This place has a wide range of selections from skewers to sushi to yakiudon. The drink menu has some interesting drinks too. Service was attentive.

Used to be my favourite Japanese food place in rmd. Today’s special Cod was over cooked - a piece of thin white layer between two black carbonised layers... And very tiny portion apprx 10x2x1 cm in total. Might need a better ventilation - full of smoke inside and can hardly breathe. On top of these, more expensive than before. A bit sad, was really looking forward to coming an hour ago. Three stars for those good old days.

Very nice food, even though I am not a fan of Japanese food but this time I am very satisfied with the quality of food I had. Very gud service as well. Even though the restaurant was very busy but still they served us very well...... 👍👍

We've been driving past this place for years. Finally, I took a look at the food pictures on Google, and well, it obviously made it to my food adventure list. We added it to our walking list, took the Canada Line one evening to Aberdeen Station, and walked along Hazelbridge Way and then Capstan Way. We didn't have a reservation. The manager greeted us at the door and seated us right away. While walking past different tables with various displays of amazing sashimi dishes, it felt like we were no longer in BC or Canada. Yes, all the servers spoke English, but the place was strongly Chinese Asian rather than Japanese. The menu was vast, but since there was just the two of us, we couldn't order a lot of items. We chose our favourite, hamachi sashimi ($35.95), and ghindara – grilled miso pickled black cod ($19+). The Hamachi sashimi we had was the most amazing I’ve tasted. Extremely fresh and firm. No fishy smells. I've read reviews – most find this place pricey. Well, it was the most we've paid for hamachi sashimi in Canada. BUT, as shown on the photo, the pieces were not thin, they were excellent, the cut was great, and, after the dish was finished, we were well satisfied. At other places with a lower price tag for hamachi, I remember think "that was not enough fish". The servers were all extremely polite, but we need not feel welcomed, and we did not see a lot of friendly faces. It was kind of sad and severe. Oh, note the size of the wasabi(!) We went back with friends to try BBQ fresh fish. The BBQ salmon belly were amazing (Salmon Toro Nankotsu $27.9). They were so good we repeated the order. The chicken wings were fantastic but on the expensive side (Tebasaki $38 for 6).

Manzo is one of those spots you can always count on for quality food. Given that the service isn't always the best (as expected from any Chinese-run establishment), they huge variety of options never disappoint. One of my favourite dish to get here is the Nebeyaki udon. It's a very simple dish - udon in broth served with green onions, Naruto fish cake, prawn tempura, and a perfectly poached egg. I can never pin point what it is but the broth is so delicious, something about it always keeps me wanting more. Note that Manzo also has a menu filled with lots of drink options! As a Izakaya, it's often a spot where people go drink at so it can be a little loud at times.

Great food, but watered down drinks and billed for food we never ordered.

HORRIBLE service experience. They gave us the wrong food then made us pay for it and blamed us; this blond-orange color haired waitress said “there are fault in both parties“. To make it even worse she started talking trash behind our back when we complained to the manager; she said "who do they think they are to complain" to the other waitress right beside our table! She even made fun of us to the customers there. What a horrible person. The manager ended up giving 50% discount on the wrong food we recived but then her ignorant attitude have caused our appetite to fall. Avoid if you dont want to ruin your day.

Surprisingly to have a full traditional Japanese Restaurant Menu...and the owners are Chinese. The prices were a bit over the top for the quality and food presentation that was displayed. We got there just as they opened and were seated near the entrance by the window. We weren't sure why the air conditioner was on full blast in mid October. (Brrrr) The chawanmushi was half the size compared to an authentic Japanese restaurant. The rest of our order was meh....

Manzo is a pretty well known izakaya in Richmond, claiming to be one of the first, starting the trend of all the ones coming after. Which I don't doubt, since Manzo Izakaya has been here for at least 10+ years by now. Manzo Itamae, the younger, bigger, sister of the chain is mainly focused on sit down dining rather than drinking tapas. There are more share plates and bigger tables, more suitable for family or bigger parties.

Overpriced ... Overpriced, bad service.. really not worth the money at all
Glitchy
Overpriced, bad service, small portions. I read the reviews below shortly after my visit and it looks like I hit the jackpot of bad experience. Food was overpriced-$5.75 for one tsukune skewer?! $12.95 for one o-toro cone. They served us the wrong dish and then added it to our bill. The kitchen took so long to prepare our food that some people from our group did not receive their food when the rest of the group were done. And... No apologies whatsoever. Dislike!

Overpriced food.. I went here hoping for some nice izakaya style food (japanese tappa dishes). The only place I've been to for Japanese Izakaya is Guu , and I was hoping Manzo would offer a similar experience. In fact, I was hoping the prices would be cheaper than Guu because the location of Manzo is a bit out of the way, and I assumed the lower rent would equate to lower prices compared to Guu.

Unfortunately, when I first glanced at the menu, all of the prices shocked me. The Nabeyaki Udon was $12, Unagi Don was $17, Kimchi Udon for $13!!!, many of the tappa dishes were about 15% more expensive than what they would cost at Guu. I was hoping the higher prices would equate to more food per serving but that was not to be. The serving sizes weren't any larger than what I was used to at other Japanese restaurants.

The quality of the food was fine. We ordered a nabeyaki udon, some beef tongue, chicken yakitori sticks, and a salmon cheek thingy.

It seems the majority of the people that go here drive a $100,000+ car, or have an allergic reaction to money.. I just can't recommend this restaurant to anyone that doesn't fit this criteria.

The only thing I could see that sucked about this place was the reviews! Great service we had 3 different servers consistently checking on us, we had nigiri (toro salmon unagi tomago surf clam etc) spicy scallop roll delicious! And the servers were cute and very pleasant ...

Manzo sucks. We went to Manzo's tonight, we order a roll, sushi, nabeyaki udon, and chicken teriyaki. Not complicated. It took the chicken teriyaki 25 min to arrive. I talked to the waitress, I had already finished my meal and was waiting for my son's. She said the waitress who took my order put it on "hold". I asked the manager, this chinese guy to look into it. He went into the kitchen, and came out without saying a word or acknowledging me. The teriyaki finally came. The food is expensive for what you get, service is terrible. When I paid for the meal I told the waitress that I will not be coming back, it will be my first and last time here, in which she replied "that's fine"..well that's fine with me. Don't go there, you're wasting your money, there are a lot more better places to dine in Richmond.

October, 2017
I didnt go to manzo restaurant at least a year, since they got gun fight..but I missed their lobster rolls.. so, went there for dinner last night..they still gave good services, but... ... had my favour lobster roll ( Lobster rolls used to be put avocados and cucumbers in it.. but nothing else, just real lobster meat.. they put some creamy sauce on top, but not cream cheese taste. Taste like some kind of corn starch sauce with white color. They marked up the price from $18 to $21.95 per roll ) ; mirugai sashimi ( but we were so disappointed with geoduck sashimi, they put too much lemon juice to cover the fresh taste). , Toro sushi (taste like tuna, not tuna belly, rice is too hard, not fresh ); hamachi sushi ( not fresh); salmon Toro sushi, tobiko sushi .. they used to be one of my favour restaurant, but not anymore, won't go there again.

Anti-climactic experience for a shocking price.. Each dish was quite expensive, since it seemed as if they were serving half portions, which would be justified if we paid for uniqueness, but there was nothing unique about the dishes.
Cute, but stupid, waitresses.

Tricked us!!. Food are expensice and service are just okay. the part i hate the most is they will tell u the specail fo the day and ask if u want it. SAY NO !!!. we said yes and they never told us the price....a2 piece of special sushi cost 12 bucks a piece....150 for the sepcial. it seens like they do that alot. they will usually ask the girls with the guy on a date. it looks bad when the guys ask how muc? most people dont. i learned my leasson, just say no

Love the salmon pizza. I usually go to the Alexandra Road location, but the parking absolutely sucks. This location has ample parking, more servers, is bigger, and more trendy looking. It is a bit more expensive because the items differ a little bit. My go to dish is the salmon and chopped scallop pizzas. I have yet to find another restaurant that offers this. I haven't bought sushi here because frankly I can have sushi anywhere else at half the price. I do love some other dishes including the nabeyaki udon, ribs, crab or lobster fried rice. The portions are small so your bill does add up. The service is excellent - very fast and they are refilling your tea cups before you even ask...and I drink a lot of tea. Another thing I noticed is that when you pay for the bill, the server will turn around to allow you privacy. I do find it awkward in some restaurants when they are 2 feet in front of you staring while you pay the bill. Yummy food, lots of parking, and great service.

Came here for a bday dinner because we have heard its good. End result is we got the first round of our food and waited for 30 mins to find out our 2nd round of order was misplaced. When confronted, no apologies were given and we had to wait yet another 20 minutes for the food. Seriously! Worst of all it was the guy manager that misplaced the order and pretended like he did nothing wrong. Bad experience that left us and our bday girl very unhappy. Go here if you want pricey food with subpar management ... bday girl said she wont come back

Food Good, lousy Manager.. We came here tonight for a girls night out. There were only 3 of us. First off, the manager wasn't very smilely or even greeted us at the door, just grabbed come menus and showed us to a table. The food, was good, the drinks were good and one friend said they had a unique cocktail she hadn't seen outside of japan. The servers were very polite, and even when we asked to order, she said that she wasn't our server and quickly went to get our server. We ordered the seafood okonomoyaki to start, and it came 35 minutes later, and after asking for it twice. Manager brought it finally and no apology or anything just plopped it on the table. The rest of the meal was good, and on time, never asked us if we wanted more drinks just kept filling those tea cups, we had to ask to order more alcoholic drinks, which were fab. We sat ate dinner, chatted, and they kept wanting to clear the table away, the manager came over several times to ask if we were finished. We were there from 7-9:30pm, and many dirty looks from manager, ( they had empty tables and it wasn't packed), I put my hand up to signal for the bill and he produced it out of his pocket and chucked it on the table. Food- very good Girl wait staff-very good Manager guy-needs a good lesson in customer service. He was rude and unfriendly and didn't open his mouth for two words to come out of it. Although we loved the food, rather pricey our meal for 3 girls was over $100.00, that manager will make me NEVER go there again.

Unique modern-urban decor. Came here by accident mainly because all my other regular sushi favorite spots were closed. But now I can say that I have another addition to the fine list of fresh sushi locations in Richmond! Although it was a bit expensive, it was all worth it because the ingredients were fresh, the food was prompt, and the service was impeccable! I will come back when I next get the chance!
Every Day Is A Food Day
Service was however terrible with this dish. The takoyakis came promptly, but I swear I waited for almost an hour for my Mentaiko Chaahan to come. I know that we had a large group, so it would take longer, but the fact that everyone else’s food came, but not mine, was a disappointment. Most of my friends had finished their food by the time my fried rice came. So service this time was definitely a disappointment, but food was average as usual.
Every Day Is A Food Day
this time we came for the Deep Fried Mango Ice Cream my friend was talking about. I started myself off with a Sukiyaki Beef Hotpot just cause I hadn’t tried it before and wanted something that wasn’t sushi. I got the small size, but it was enough for one person. It came with these clear noodles and lots of beef, tofu, and veggies. Not bad! And lastly, for dessert, we got what we came for. The Deep Fried Mango Ice Cream ! The server poured the alcohol over the ice cream and lit it on fire. You can still see the flame in the picture. Pretty cool! As for taste, I wouldn’t say it was anything special. It was just mango ice cream that was encrusted. I also found that the alcohol was way too strong, which didn’t work too well with the dessert. I believe it was something like Soho, which has a lychee flavour to it, but the alcohol bitterness was still too strong for me.

Marvs post on Manzo below! =) It was a Monday. And this time it was my good friend Duarte's turn to take me out for my bday dinner. lol Naturally I don't like going out too late on a work night, so he was kind enough to come pick me and Colleen up and eat in Richmond. =) Manzo Japanese Restaurant(Izakaya) 8391 Alexandra Rd, Richmond BC Tel#: (604) 276-2882 Actually, I purposely didn't want to drive because I was going to drink and eat a lot. lol That weird bloated feel after haahah Not a good combo for driving. hahahaha OH! an important side note. PARKING HERE SUCKS! yeah, the back lot for parking is ridiculous. There's barely any space available once you pass 630pm. Think Richmond and picture people who refuse to carpool and (I CANNOT for the life of me understand why) be nicer to other drivers and their cars. So! get there early and good luck parkin! We got to Manzo early and there were already a few tables occupied on both of our sides. I

Nelson: A nice interior, but the service was extremely slow and we had to leave without getting our full order. Also a bit pricey, but here are the food pics/descriptions anyway. These chopped scallop roll ($4.95) was really creamy and tasted pretty fresh. Must be the Vancouver effect. Salmon sashimi ($15.95) had large quality pieces. Typically Vancouver. Fresh Kani Miso Roll described as fresh dungeness crab with crab tomalley ($14.95). I've never seen a roll like before and it not surprisingly it had a really strong crab taste. It was unique and I liked it! Assorted Sashimi ($19.95) was presented really nicely and had very little fish considering that there was octopus, squid and shrimp as well as the salmon and the tuna. Gyutan Shioyaki ($6.95) is beef tongue and had good peppery flavour, but it was slightly chewy. I suppose that's normal. Dynamite roll ($6.95) was pretty normal and nothing special. The whole squid ($8.95) was done well and was ok overall. Takoyaki ($6.50) was m

It's not fine dining Japanese, however the prices are still steep. I’ve had more satisfying experiences for the same price, but the food here was still great!

The sashimi surpassed my expectations, reminding me that the quality of seafood is high in Vancouver—even in places not necessarily known for fish. The robata and kitchen items were also very good. Highlights of the dinner included, clockwise from the top left, a sashimi platter (with aji, kinmedai, amaebi, saba, and salmon), a plate of “yakitori” (enoki beef maki, tsukune, and chicken), live hotate yaki (grilled scallop), and my favorite dish of the meal: kamo no mustard (duck slices in sauce with spicy mustard).
