Review Nu Shanghaiese Bistro - Richmond

Genuine Shanghainese food, very tasty ! The preparation are as good as the food. Dumpling was really juicy, you can actually suck the soap from the dumpling, the wrapper was thin and soft ! (forgot to take picture) The spiciness of the Sichuan Boiled fish was just right ! Easy for everyone. The fish was very well cooked. Price is very reasonable. Definitely a “Come again” restaurant.

Didn't realize this restaurant. Very nice place, service is good. Every plate taste fresh and homemade. Love the small dumpling, it was very juicy and big portion! Carrot cake taste delicious and freshly made (extremely hot). Downside is the place isn't that clean...it smells weird.

This traditional Shanghainese restaurant offers beautiful & comfortable seating, steady quality of dishes and attending service. The most impressive dish is the mouth watering Siu long boa. The soup and meat inside in super thin wrappings is absolutely marvellous! The Double crabs with glutinous rice cake is done perfectly and the portion is really big for a 8 people set dinner. The stew pork hock is the highlight of all, and done so tenderly and it melt in your mouth. The salted meat and veggie fried rice in a stone heated bowl wrapped up this beautiful meal!

Note. Cash only Not bad, I was told it wasn’t very good. But today going to my normal restaurants and having been rejected as 3 of them were closed I was downstairs from this place. I’m glad we tried it. The spacious restaurant was a bit quiet however the food was delicious and delightful. The only issue I had was the vegetarian dumplings (too salty).

Found this hidden gem of Shanghainese food recently! Can't believe I missed out for so long. Love the soup dumplings, Chinese donuts and soy milk. To be honest, everything is so delicious here. Usually Shanghainese food are more to the flavourful side...But their flavours are fantastic. Not overly salty, just right. They also have a good team of servers, friendly and patient.

This is one of my favourite Shanghainese restaurant in Richmond. Clean, elegant interior decor and excellent service. The food quality just keeps getting better and better! I've highly recommended this place to all my friends and family.

Entire place were empty when we arrived at 12:30pm . Then one more group with 2 people for the whole lunch time . Food was not good . Test so so . Service were not good either . The woman seemed very angry about something. Not recommend to go this place at all

Came here to try a lunch deal purchased from Groupon, and it was a pretty good experience. Food was great, service was fast, place was nice and clean. The lunch deal had a lot of options too.

Wow is all i gotta say! Went with Wifey and kid, sooo delicious. Looks like they have some killer night time specials too. Cant wait to go back one day when I gotta impress someone out of town.

Fabulous food and service. Servers frequently checked to see if teapots were filled and were quick to take away empty plates. The owner was very approachable and came back a few times to check on us and had friendly conversations. A great dining experience.

A pleasant surprise if you're looking for congee 'dai lan', tapas style sharing plates, mostly deep-fried.

Congee is highly recommended, smooth and healthy.

White table cloth, great service.

Have been going back ever since we saw their $10 coupon on Safeway receipts in Richmond stores only.
Groupon time!! We came here on a holiday which wad a Monday. Apparently the Groupon didnt say its not valid on stat holidays but the waitress said if I want, need to charge 4 dollars more which is okay. We get to pick 1 appetizer, 1 cold plate, 1 soup, 2 dishes, dessert. We picked wild milan salad with beancurd ,beef wrap, Shanghai wonton soup, sweet and sour pork, shanghai stir fry noodle, deep fried stuff red bean paste cake. They all taste pretty good but a little pricy. The waitress and manager are so nice and smile a lot even though they are busy which is good because most asian restaurant I been to, the workers face are like not smiling and look mad and stress.
After my last bad review, I went back to try their afternoon menu. I know lot of Shanghai Restaurant I can go but the sitting environment is very clean and comfortable and services are not bad. This time I was really happy with their Xiao Lung Bao (very thin almost translucent wrap, packed with soup and pork meat inside). Panfried Dumpling (Crispy bottom, juicy inside). You can see the chef made them freshly and not previously frozen. If you are to order their hot Soya milk sweet/salty version. I would recommend ordering the Crispy Chinese Bread. The above mentioned dishes are far best in Richmond that I have had. Good job!!

First time went there for dinner 2 weeks ago. Ordered 4 people set menu, added two veggie dishes and Xiao Lung Bao. The Peking duck came in sliced pieces with wrapping bread. Taste was okay just the skin is not crispy as our liking. Duck Soup and other dishes overall was good and flavorful.

So we went back and thinking to order the same set dinner but they have new set dinner menu and some of the dishes are not attractive so we ordered from a la cart menu. The Peking duck is better than last time but the wrapping bread came moldy, green dotted spot around the edges. At first, we wasn't sure as few kids ate the wrap and thought it tasted wired. So when I closely looked at it and bite to it. It's mold for sure. The waitress apologized and brought us new wrapping bread. I know the kitchen can gets busy but this is really scary. They definitely need to pay more attention to their foods and kitchen. Otherwise, the health authorities will pay a visit soon. Will I go back? .....

Overall, although those dishes featured in the GROUPON deal did not sound super exciting, I found them all well executed and delicious. Sometimes finding great quality on simple dishes really says something special about the chef of the restaurant. I don’t think this deal is known by a lot of people yet, as it took a few moments for our server to figure out what this deal was with the chef. It also caught me by surprise of how good the quality was on the Xiaolongbao and the Hot and Sour soup. They seem to have a mix of different dishes from different Chinese regions, but the chef must be a master of Shanghai cuisine as it was heavily featured here. The price looks a little higher on their regular menu, but I definitely recommend this GROUPON buy.

Came here for a family dinner and the family decided to let us “kids” decide on what to order and we definitely went way overboard. Nu Chinese Bistro has been getting a lot of heat lately because of their high debts. Apparently the rumour has it that the owner doesn’t want to pay the debts and when the collectors ask for their money they said that they had changed owners. (I heard that they actually didn’t change owners). So there’s something sketchy about the place to begin with but anyways… on to the food

Five stars for service and ambience.
Although the staff and chefs were all Chinese, flavour was lacking authenticity. Would probably not be coming back for a long time.

New owner!! This restaurant trumps the previous "Nu Shanghai" and I don't think a lot of people has realized its under new ownership with new menu. The Shanghai dumplings here are AMAZING! Plump and juicy with thin skin to rival that of din tai fung's. Love many dishes here like their crab pearl rice, marinated duck egg roll, daikon pastry and tan tan noodles...I can go on. They feature dishes from diff regions of China so there is always something on the menu to cater all tastes. I've returned for lunch and few dinners. Will definitely keep going back!

Back again with the ChineseBites chomping crew! This time around, we circled a table of Shanghainese food at Nu Chinese Bistro. If you’re driving along Garden City in Richmond, it’s the restaurant on the second floor. Not clicking? It’s the place that was once home to cosplay waitresses, from maids to airplane stewardesses… so I’ve heard.
Every Day Is A Food Day
NOTE: As part of the ChineseBites media event, all food was free, but all opinions are based on my own experience. Nu Chinese Bistro is located on the second floor in Richmond’s Cosmo Plaza on McKim Way. It used to be called Nu Shanghainese Bistro, but has since changed names because of new ownership. I was invited by ChineseBites along with 10 other food bloggers to taste their menu. Since we had a large group, we got seated in a private room. The interior of the restaurant is pretty nice.

囋經典美食Nu Chinese Bistro (環境優雅舒適的上海菜館)
地址:#2170 柏麗廣場Cosmo Plaza, 8788 McKim Way, Richmond, BC

I was invited to another Chinese Bites dinner and this time it was at Nu Chinese Bistro. It’s located at Cosmo Plaza on Garden City and McKim Way. It’s on the second floor and the plaza was a bit difficult to find since there are so many there and I wasn’t sure which one it was. The restaurant looks pretty new and since they are located on the second floor they get lots of lighting.

There was a lot of controversy surrounding NU Shanghainese Bistro. You can google it if you are interested. The new Nu Chinese Bistro is located at Cosmo Plaza in Richmond on McKim Way. It is the same plaza as Garden City Hotpot. The name is slightly changed with new ownership and a new menu. The interior is elegant and classy with a lot of old classic 70s Chinese Mandarin music on loop. There are two private rooms if you prefer to host a large party. On a school night, the restaurant is rather quite.

Nu Chinese Bistro is located on McKim Way inside Cosmo Plaza on the 2nd floor. They were formally known as Nu Shanghainese Bistro, but after a change in ownership the name only slightly changed. The restaurant is quite hard to find and with the group of 11 of us, a majority of us took a while to find the restaurant.

The restaurant has new owners and a new menu to go with that. The name of the restaurant has only slightly changed, which really confused me. Their new name is Nu Chinese Bistro.

The food was decent, but the service could be a tad better. The highlight of the night was the Stone Pot Braised Pork Belly Shanghainese Style.

Slow food slow service. Food is decent but it takes forever for dishes to come out. Good 15 minutes between each course. That paired with slow service and high prices, would not come again.

Kitchen completely changed!!!. I came around Christmas and the food was good, but when I walked in yesterday, (April 5th), I was all a lie!! First of all, made reservations at 7:30 but didn't get seated till 8:10, then when we got sat down, I noticed the menu looked a little different. Going there I was expecting Shanghaiese food, but when we looked at the menu it was canton food. We asked them they just said they were in the middle of changing menu. So because we got seated late, everyone was hungry, we were like oh well we'll still give it a try. Worst idea ever! The food was so bad! As we ate, we were able to find out more from the servers, that they are going to change of owners/chefs, and that it will become Canton food. I felt being lied to! And they really show figure stuff out first before offering food that they don't even know how to make! And everything is sooooo dirty compared to before!! All in all, don't go there ever!!!

Horrible service. Speechless

Ate here with a friend and the service was not as deplorable as other reviews had mentioned, though the food is nothing to write home about. Other Shanghainese establishments do it better, but the more upscale feeling the place exudes certainly helps give you the impression that the food is better than it actually is.

But wanting to give the place a chance, I called in to try and make a reservation for 4 people, and I was a bit surprised to discover that they don't even allow reservations for parties less than 5. It's hard to give them the benefit of the doubt...but really?! What restaurant doesn't allow reservations for 4 people? That's absolutely ludicrous.

Bad Food / No Service. We ordered a noodle dish and it was extremely salty that we couldn't eat at all. The waitress took it back. We waited and waited. Finally, we asked the manager when the second noodle dish would come. Her rude response was "our chef is not going to make you another one." For the whole time, we were waiting for nothing and no one would let us know.

Terrible Service. My sister phoned and made reservation for dinner at 6pm last Sunday and she were told that we need to finished by 7:30pm. I arrived first and and the greeter told me that we have to finished by 7:30pm. I didn't response as she was kind of rude and she told me again but ... again she was so impolite and her tone was just so rude that I didn't bother give her any response. She asked if we need high chair and I told her we needed 2 and she immidetely said "that many!". I think she is the one the responsible for all the bad reviews the resturant received. Oh.. and not to mention, we order almost immediatey after we received the menus (we ordered the set dinner), the first dish came pretty quick, but the the second one we've waited for 15 mins. Then the rest (like 6 dishes) came from 7:05 to 7:15 and desserts didn't come until 7:40pm. If they want the table back they should asked their kitchen for faster services not to stress the customer. Overall, services was really really terrible and we will NOT go there again.

O.o. Went there at 9:30pm, xiao long bao sold out, sheng jian bao sold out. make sure you check before going... didn't know it was possible for a shanghai place to be sold out of xlb! :(

Nu serves up great Shanghainese flavor dishes. The Xiao Long Bao is very tasty and big, definitely one to try in Richmond.

Good food poor service. Food and menu are exceptionally good; but service is poor. No reservation for table under 5; they let the customers crowded at the reception area and there are at least 2 empty tables. It took 30 min for our last dish to arrive. No apology at all. Another 10 min for our bills. No one seems to care.

Bigger portions than I expect. 011 shredded chicken and mung bean pasta salad $7.95 3/5 - too bad there wasn't any cucumber and peanut. The texture of the fen pi (mung bean sheet) was above average.
156 ham and winter melon soup $12.95 3.5/5 - Portion was big. Too bad they used bacon instead of Chinese ham. It was a little saltier than I wanted.
183 sticky rice wrap with dried seaweed $4.95 3.75/5 - Very crispy with a softer centre.
185 deep fried Chinese donut $2.95 4/5 - I'm pretty sure they were freshly deep fried in-house. The filling was very moist too. Nothing comparable to those they were re-fried.
186 xiao long bao (juicy pork dumplings) $5.95 3.5/5 - lots of soup inside. I found the skin thin but still able to hold the weight.
224 pumpkin pancake $5.95 3/5 - The menu didn't say it has red bean filling. I was expecting something similar to the deep-fried Yam Rice Cake from City 1. Very disappointing.

portions were bigger than expected. I heard this place was pricy with small portions. I found $15/pp pretty reasonable.

Misleading ad and mediocre food. Went there at around 8pm and could tell immediately that the service was slow just by seeing the expressions of the people that were waiting for their bills to come. Sat us down after 15 minutes and waited another 20 minutes before anybody would take our order (had to flag down the waitress). I ordered a couple of the main dishes and I had a coupon for a free juicy pork bun. Waitress looks at it and says that according to her manager "these coupons are not accepted until next week". Nowhere on the coupon does it say the start date--only says to use it before December, 2014. This coupon I have received two weeks ago and she was telling me that they will not accept the coupon? Told me to come back again next week. This is starting to sound like a money-grabbing scam just to get you to come in again. I ordered the juicy pork buns anyways and told her that I will pay for it despite the fact that I had coupon for it. Food was okay and nothing special. The hot and sour soup tasted...odd. We ordered a fried rice dish that came VERY late (we were ready to ask for the bill because we thought it was not going to come). The waitresses were nice but I could tell they were over-worked and lacked training. I like Shanghainese food, but I will not go to this restaurant unless I really have to. There are better choices in Richmond.

Slow service with long wait. Arrived 1230. Informed 30min wait. 130h later we were seated. We were about to leave and then told that we should order before we sit down to get timely service. When we entered, we saw a third of the tables were empty! Asking for anything extra was slow or forgotten.
Thankfully, Food was good though. Tom yum soup was great.

Poor service. I called the restaurant and made a reservation at 6:30. My family and I went to the restaurant and was told there was no such reservation. I spoke with the manager in charge and it turned out the reservation had been made at 7:30. We had to wait 30 minutes for a table.

We sat down on the table. A waitress was polite to pour us tea. Everything was fine until the dishes arrived. We were given a spicy dish when we asked specifically for a non-spicy dish. The manager told us that they forgot. The dish was not replaced and the food quality I experienced was average.

After we finished our meals, a waitress came to retrieve the dishes. The waitress responsible was clumsy. The food fell from the dish and splattered onto my shirt and the floor. An apology was not given. The floor was also not cleaned up. As we were promised free desserts after dinner, they said they forgot. At this point, the table was empty. The dessert (red bean pancake) finally arrived in 10 minutes and we were not given any utensils -- no plates and no forks. We asked for such and we were given toothpicks. The dessert was half warm and half hot.

I am definitely not coming back.

I hope this place closes down.. Don't eat here! When we asked the hostess how long the wait was she said it would be very quick. We ended up waiting 40min for a table. When a server was setting our "clean" plates down, a cooked chicken foot rolled out onto the table, but he didn't bother to change our plates. Half way through our meal, the server asked us to move tables (We didn't). The food was mediocre and the service was awful, we had to wait so long for everything and the servers didn't seem happy to be there.

Service is very bad. We went there two time, both time, the lady ask do you have reservation, we did not,,and she just walk away, but half of the restaurant is empty, seems most people is waiting for the food,. I dont think any Shanghainese in Richmond. Why did I get this kind of service, I strongly dont recommend to eat at this restaurant at all, also the parking is terrible too.
Richmond
Bad service. I call and make reservation, however, the wait time is unacceptable. If I need to wait for almost 30min, what's the point of call in early and make reso.
CY1530
Painfully slow service. Had lunch there, and to be honest, given the price this restaurant is charging, you would expect that service be far more prompt than what it is.
There was no front-of-house attendant to greet guests as they came into the restaurant, and it took them nearly five minutes to even bring us a menu.
The waiting period for the food to come out was absolutely unacceptable. Simple dishes that other restaurants would have had out in 10 minutes took nearly half an hour to make an appearance.
It seemed like there was very little organization in the kitchen as people who sat down and ordered 20-30 minutes after we did seemed to get their dishes first.
The food (in particular the xiao long bao) is average at best, but for the prices they charge and the slow pace that they go at, you would be much better going to Dinesty or another Shanghainese restaurant.
The waiters are polite and take every attempt to top off your tea, but even they couldn't save the poor lunch experience.
Will not be returning and will not be recommending that others return.

... well fried (could be crisper, but fish wasn't dried out at all); fish moist, flavor mild but definitely a good chinese version of 'fish & (no) chips'...

Marian suggested to meet up on Thanksgiving Day. So, I made a couple of calls to Lorna and Emily to see if they can join in. At the end, only Lorna, me and Marian can make it for dinner. Lorna suggested to meet at NU Shanghainese Bistro, a relatively new restaurant. We arrived at 6PM and we had to wait for 30 minutes for a table. According to Lorna, this restaurant does not take reservation for a party less than 5. On this day, there were quite a number of big parties. Perhaps, it’s because it’s Thanksgiving Day. The decor is simple and quite classy. We love the menu which is loaded with photos; just like those we find in Beijing. Tea was served with a warmer, nice. The teapot is quite heavy and it’s cutleries were embossed with the restaurant’s logo. According to Lorna, that Chinese character meant praise. We ordered a few appetizers to start with. Marian picked black fungus which is also one of my favourite dish to order. The dish is slightly vinegarish and served cold as most Chinese appetizers are served. This is $7.95. We wanted to order the Tofu and Chinese Cress dish but was told that they don’t have it that night. So, we switched to Jelly Fish Salad. The jelly fish was crunchy but was quite bland. Maybe we did not add enough of the sauce provided. This is $8.95. The last appetizer we ordered was Mountain Yam in Fruit Sauce. I had tried a few of this dish in Beijing. Marian has not eaten this before. I told the server to serve this at the end of the meal but they brought this in the beginning of the meal. I guessed they were so busy that they forgot about our request. The Mountain Yam was crunchy with a little slimy texture. The sauce adds sweetness to it. This is $7.95. Our main meat dish was Smoked Duck. Half duck for $18.95. This has good flavour. It is served with some shell shape steamed bun. We ordered a rice dish for carbo. It is Garlic Fried Rice with Preserved Meat. The fried rice was hot because it was served in a clay pot to retain the heat. We pro
