Review O'hares - Richmond

Steven H
Nice little Irish pub in the Steveston area with ridiculously large serving of tasty nachos and variety of beers on tap. The burgers are great too. The staff are friendly and helpful. When it was really busy (St Patrick’s Day) they helped us find a table when it looked like every spot was taken. There are more tables in the back.

Lived in Richmond for 44 years and I finally went to this place. Nice friendly neighborhood pub, family friendly, good place for drinks and a bit to eat. Can't believe it took me this long to discover his place. Definitely coming back.

Very Comfortable & relaxing neighbourhood Irish Pub to hang out as a single woman for a snack and drink, post walk. I come here quite often too. Ordered a craft raspberry sour, which was fabulous btw!, and had the Baja fish tacos. The the lime slaw with the pickled onions and the chipotle-guacamole dressing was absolutely delicious. It gave the kick And added necessary acidity to the fish. Only recommendation I’d add to enhance the food experience for this specific dish is to perhaps have meatier pieces of haddock. That will make it even more wholesome. Staff were attentive and friendly.

Calamari was good, but was expecting more Irish food options for a Irish pub. Potato skins were soggy and under seasoned. Wings were decent but needed more sauce on the hot wings and the salt and pepper wings didn't have much of any stuck to the wings, they were crispy and crunchy which was nice. The fish and chips were nice. I enjoyed the mushy peas I just wish there were more than a 1 once size portion. The fries were excellent. Tarter sauce was okay but had no mouth feel to it was just like a pureed mayo it needed some brunoise cut pickles, shallots and capers to give more body to it. Waiters and staff were nice and attentive.

It was my first time at O'Hares in a very long time. We ordered the half order of nachos, calamari, and wings. The portion sizes are big and the food came out cooked well. Calamari wasn't chewy. Wings wasn't dry. The nachos were huge even for a half order. The servers were all nice and happily accommodated our baby and stroller. We had a good time and would definitely go again.

I don’t usually write reviews but thought I’d write one. Nice looking place but prices are unreasonable. I asked my server if they had any specific drink specials and unfortunately they replied with a no. They might be the only place the doesn’t offer a late night Happy Hour and Drink specials, maybe that’s not their thing. By no means was I looking for some kind of deal, was just a little shocked to see no drink specials on a weekend. The place was pretty quiet when we walked in, but it was nice to see the plexi glass up and tables spaced accordingly. The servers made the night enjoyable, friendly and willing to spark a conversation. The burger was ok, it could of used a little more seasoning unfortunately I don’t think I would spend $19.50 for a burger again. Decent selection of beer if u like craft beer. Didn’t know the price until I got my bill. I guess I could of asked but it would have been nice to know how much beers were before I got my bill, they have prices for wine and cocktails but not for beer. Seems a little too expensive for a neighborhood pub prices. Might give it another chance one day.

This place is good. The nachos are biiig. Suitable for 4 people. Way too much for 2. Wings are good but not amazing. I enjoyed the sticky toffee pudding. My kid liked the burger. Good beer selection.

The burgur was really good 🌹plain and simple and fresh, Nachos was huuuggge 😂 but they provide boxes to take out your leftover which is pretty nice gesture👌💖the lady who served us was really nice and friendly 🤗 the place is nice, everything was great, we will come back for sure to try the other food they have 🎊✌️

It is the heart of Steveston and has been for many years. It is a family friendly business and they care about their staff and patrons. Great food and authentic Irish Pub and family. Fantastic patio, huge list of craft beers and extensive wine list in the Pub and the Wine and Beer Store. Give Jack O'Hare a toast when you are there on a Friday night.......he is right from the " Old Country"...Cheers

The service was amazing, even on such a crazy day as St. Patrick's Day. Always been a gem on the fringe of Steveston. I recommend it to everyone!

GRANT & ERIN RUN A TOP NOTCH PLACE! The Cheers of Steveston it has a good pub menu and the patio is great. Service is quick and helpful. The first Saturday of the month is a DJ dance party with fun tunes plus its a great place to watch the game as well. What more could you ask for in a pub?

the food is DELICIOUS, the burgers, the wings and my absolute favourite (and the best I have ever had), Cobb Salad. Keep up the good work.

Great place, great people, awesome food with cold beer....what a lovely time!

Solid food but on the expensive side. Found the craft beer menu leans to the hoppy side for my personal preference. Generally like the asthetics.

This pub used to our regular hang out every week, but ever since the son in law took I over there have horrible changes it. The service was ok but you have to out for your bill to see if has not being added too by some waitresses for more drinks on your table in a group settings. We where continuously having issues with this.

We never go there anymore due to my cousin was attacked by a bouncer outside the pub too, without a reason. Food started to become horrible too.

I wish go back to the original owners control.

I'm rather partial to Irish pubs so it was only fair I did a review for the one in my neighborhood. The food here, in my opinion, is great! I particularly like their signature pies, they never disappoint me. Though I have to say their food prices definitely veer on the expensive side. Good daily specials and a decent happy-hour help compensate this somewhat; Tuesdays and Wednesdays I'd recommend personally for pies and wings respectively. Decent starter selection with all the standard stuff like fries, poutine, and wings along with less conventional (for an Irish bar) choices like calamari and mug-of-prawns. This place definitely takes their spirits seriously; a pretty expansive beer/drink menu, Guinness on tap, and they crack a new keg every Friday. Atmosphere is alright, the place is a bit small so it gives it a nice snug feeling in a way. The service here I've found to be consistently so-so; its not bad but it could definitely improve. All things considered O'Hare's is a rather well-rounded bar in terms of food and drinks with an overall okay level of service. Not a bad choice for a watering hole.

Mediocre food, too expensive for what you get. Fries are little tiny bits, burger was below average. The last 3 times I have eaten here it has been so so. Looks like a lot of the food is pre packaged and heated up. I will not be giving this place another try. After 18 years of coming here I am moving on!

Menu was changed a couple of years ago. But this isn't exactly a hot spot. They do have the market cornered tho. What else is around there? Women? I wish. I still go into action but they don't have the best here frankly.
Modern pub with a twisted fare

-----18 Aug, 2013-----

Lol did the job. Local watering hole with an eclectic menu.. a couple of fun (PG website here?) women were there and we took care of their bill after approaching them and they accepted wine and convo and it was good to go definitely did the job. If you are bringing your own and not looking for std pub action the menu has a lot of variety. Wouldn't bring my wife or gf here

Same old same old. Same old same old menu but that is what we want right boys? Prices are average and that is high enough when we want to wine (beers here actually) the girls and get past first base. I bring a couple a my own but one waitress is not hard on the eyes. They can do better. Long Live Pubs and the purpose they serve.

I've been here twice and have loved it on both occasions. Fantastic pub fare, and a crazy Caesar that practically counts as its own appetizer. Great food, great atmosphere. Looking forward to coming back.

Ye Ole Neighbourhood Pub. Good place for a pint of Guiness. Prime-Rib Sundays go fast. Check out Chalk-board daily specials...was pleasantly surprised by a very good Sticky Toffee Pudding once!

Had the steak and mushroom pie with salad and fries. The steak in the pie was plentiful and fork tender. The gravy was fairly flavorful and was the right consistency. I wish the pastry on the top, although good, was a larger piece of puff pastry, since there's no bottom crust. The fries were hopelessly mediocre. Tasted frozen and were undercooked. The salad was lettuce only and came dressed, with no choice of dressing. The service here was laughable. I had to go to the bar to order my drinks and my food (after waiting and waiting) on a night when there were 2 servers and barely any customers. More effort needed in the food and the service.

The most expensive pub in town. Well, after a 3 year absence, gave it another try the other day... huge mistake. Still boring menu. So very overpriced compared to the competition. $14.99 for a burger, and you have to pay for the extras? No real selection on the menu. I noticed the parking lot is empty these days. Time for O'hares to look at the Legends or Pioneer's menu, pizzas, wraps, Mexican, anything you want on their menu. Thing is, my family and friends feel the same, and we are local people. Really is a shame.

-----02 Sep, 2011-----

Time to change the menu. Menu is boring compared to a lot of the other pubs,... been the same for years.

The fries are the worst in town,, just little bits and pieces.. always.

Really craved a burger and this was nearby at the time. As far as the half pound steak burger was concerned, I would not change a thing. It was perfect. Caesar was nice and romaine was very fresh and not overdressed. Coffee was ok. Service was quite good. I definately recommend this place to anyone craving a burger!!!!!!!

New menu, new theme - mixed success. In about May or June 2010 (I don't know exactly when), O'Hare's put the word "gastropub" on their website and changed their menu from the laminated broadsheet with Celtic knot borders, to a leather-look trifold with photo corners to hold the new narrower sheets. And it's a pretty interesting menu, though not always in a good way.

I can't think of any circumstance, for instance, that would induce me to pay money to try the deep friend dill pickle. I simply don't drink enough to make that a viable idea. I also don't think I want to know what "Mac and Cheese" Balls are. Why is the 'Mac and Cheese' in quotes, anyway? What is it really made of? And why have 'Mac and Cheese' balls as an appy when there's Mac and Cheese on the Hearty Meals part of the menu? (It's always been good, too.)

Other oddities on the starters menu include Curried Chips - a British classic, this time topped with a dollop of tzatziki. I have to wonder if the chef really means 'raita', which would at least be culturally in keeping, but the menu clearly refers to the Greek yogurt sauce.

We tried the new Buffalo Shrimp and the Edamame "wings", because they sounded like an interesting twist on favourites, but both turned out to be seriously misguided ideas. The shrimp were on individual skewers, tails on, grilled and then dipped in a vat of ordinary Buffalo hot sauce, and plated with plastic cup of blue cheese dressing. I don't know who came up with that presentation idea, but they have no palate and deserve to be roundly smacked. There is nothing interesting about the hot sauce, the quantity involved overpowers the taste of the shrimp, and the combination of skewers, tails on, and vats of sauce make this an extremely messy dish to eat. I was lucky to get away without splattering myself.

The Edamame "Wings" is just regular steamed edamame beans, with a side of the same buffalo hot sauce that comes on the Buffalo Shrimp. It's an interesting idea, but it's not tasty. "Misguided and unnecessary" is a polite description of this combination. Happily, the beans weren't drowning in the sauce.

On to dinner, then, and known and trusted dishes. My steak sandwich was good as always - I love that they cut the steak before they pop it onto the garlic bread. And my companion's steak burger was also good. The "hand cut twice-cooked fries" are just as they've always been, but could do with a couple more minutes in the fryer to be perfect in my eyes.

Overall I'd give this evening's experience a 2 out of 5. The starters killed it for me.

Had dinner there tonight, waitress was attentive and friendly, it had a nice atmosphere, servered good Irish food and I noticed a few rarer beers on the menu. There is a nice outdoor area as well. My father said it was the best beef dip he's had and the dinner special I had of seafood pasta was delicious.

And about those deep fried pickles? Don't knock 'em until you've tried 'em! I know a lot of people can't wrap their mind around it, but deep fried pickles are pretty popular in some place, like the Southern States.
