Review Chako Barbecue Izakaya - Richmond Hill

Everything from the food, design, and service is amazing. My family and I went there and walked out, completely satisfied. The restaurant was just newly renovated, and they nailed the look. There were a variety of items to choose from, like different meats, sushis and rolls, a plethora of side dishes, as well as a wide range of drinks. The grill was perfectly convenient. The staff there were amazing as well. Requests were done quickly, and they carried a nice personality. Be careful though. Do not order more than you can chew! You will be charged for any leftovers.

We came here for my birthday and found out they just recently renovated. The meat was super delicious and they have better air ventilation system now unlike before. The servers were really nice and accommodating and made sure we have everything what we need. Really enjoyed my birthday and had a great time! ❤️☺️

We haven’t been to chako for years and decided to come here for a casual Friday night dinner. After their new renovation, the dining room are mostly booths, the quality of the food are much better than before, we don’t smell like been barbecued is a plus. They have new items on the menu now, but I’m not a big fan of their beef finger meat and mussel cocktail. However, beef short ribs, lamb and flame tiger rolls are must try. Special thanks to Wei Wei(the hostess), Ling(our server) and Joyce(the manager), who bought us this great dining experience!

I used to celebrate here alot either with family or friends since it's opening many years ago. I've finally visited and they've renovated the place. Family says the food quality and service level has increased. We had a great dining experience overall

I’ve been coming here for years as I love eating here and bringing friends and family for all you can eat. The recent renovation looks amazing and I am so happy to be coming here again for sushi and Korean BBQ! It’s definitely a place worth checking out. I am so happy with my experience here. Will be coming back for more.

Great service. Great atmosphere. We really wanted this place to be great. As a Korean Canadian trust me when I say the Kimchi is not authentic. Not even close. Why is it so sweet? All the meat had red chili peppers which was a problem for the kids. Meat quality was also subpar. Gyubee or daldongnae nail that in spades. Chako.. Meat quality needs big improvement. Rice.. Another huge miss. No lettuce? Offering sushi is a good move.. But lacks a lot of choices. Overall... Subpar quality meats. Salty or too sweet marinades. Bad Kimchi. Lacks variety of choices.. Someone said ice cream was the only highlight.. Yes I concur. Most bad reviews were from months ago.. Prior to renovation. I wondered why.. Until I was told of a promo where if we show a Google review we get a discount (or some perk). I didn't write one until I got home to do a proper review... Rather than a "promoted" review. I sincerely hope the owner(s) do see these reviews and take note. Chako.. Overall was a miss. I wished them to be great. But came out disappointed. One last thing. Tip was included.. But they ask for tip again via the Machine. Another miss... . Gyubee and others don't even give you that option to add more tip. Price? Family of 4.. Ended paying more than we normally pay at Gyubee and daldongnae. I wish they had chakos spacious atmosphere in retrospect.

Recently renovated; wayyy less busy than the Scarborough location. Fast/good service. Meat and food quality were okay, not bad but not the best. Kimchi & Tofu tasted weird and unauthentic. Service charge included in bill.

Always a great time when we come here. The new renovations made it even better. The food is great servers were amazing and they made us feel like part of the family. Would 100% recommend.

Honestly, I rarely come here because my body always feels like crap after Korean BBQ, but it is a fun place to eat at with a large group of people. Everything is overly salty, especially all the meat. Although delicious when you first dig in, you'll eventually find yourself reaching for a sip of water far too often. The sashimi is not very fresh (not surprising, since they're known for BBQ, not fresh fish), but the pieces of sushi with rice are a welcome break from the vast amounts of savoury protein laid out on the table. Overall, the meats are quite tasty (although your tongue just might start to shrivel up if you have too much of it) and the pineapple chunks are a very welcoming change.

Food is not bad. However, we waited for quite long time when reordering. The entire place is smoky and we smelled like grilled meat when getting out of the place haha.

Interesting experience. You cook your own food (meat, seafood, veggie, pineapple) on a grill in the middle of your own table. We'd rate the food a 3, but the atmosphere and experience boosts up the overall rating. Limited sushi also on the all-you-can-eat menu Staff was friendly, a little slow though.

Very good service, brought all the food we ordered unlike some ayce places. Tasted fresh, and was marinated nicely. Over all it was pretty good.

Our group visited the Chako at East Beaver Creek on a Saturday night and I figured it would be busy. To get ahead of the crowd, we met at 6pm and easily grabbed a table. The large restaurant filled up fast and there was a short line outside when we left 3 hours later. Most of the tables at Chako were occupied by large groups (families, birthday gatherings) and it was boisterous but not loud. The air was filled with the smoke of BBQ, which lingered in my hair and clothing for the rest of the night.

Chako has a great concept, but its always a hit or miss at this location! One time we were given meat that didn't seem fresh at all and had to send it back, and other times we were given great food and had an overall awesome experience. Be careful what time of the day you go and be aware of long wait times during peak hours!

Great food and service. Went there with a bunch of friends and can't rave enough about this place.. It was my first time here but I will be back very soon.
Food was fantastic and service was great. Price was also great. Fantastic place all in all and I will bring my family here to enjoy.

NOT for celiacs, gluten intolerant or gluten sensitive people!. Initially, I thought this would be an ok place to eat considering I could choose not to put soy sauce on my meat, rice or veggies. When I asked the manager, she informed me that all the meat was marinated with soy sauce and all the fish in a fish sauce, which both contain gluten. She told me there was nothing she could do for me and that I should go get food elsewhere and eat it here with the rest of my party. I was very disappointed and would not recommend this place if you are celiac, gluten sensitivity or intolerant. Additional comment: service was very poor.

Nice place for a group of friends but do not expect much service.. We went as a group of 8. Our order was taken fast and the food arrived fast but that was the end of the service.
The place was very under staffed, we had to go up to the cashier desk for ask for extra drinks and desserts.
When we left at 2pm rows upon rows of tables were uncleared.
I am sure the place is OK if they have more staff.
The advert claiming the place being smokeless is not true, I head straight for the shower when I got home.

Fun place to eat. Went here with my buddies to have a night out and catch up. Nice environment. The servers serve promptly. Food was great and being able to bbq it yourself is fun. It is mainly meat. Even though I love meat dishes, after a while it did get a little repetitive.
Food: 3/5
Environment: 5/5
Service:4/5
Sanitary: 4/5
Price: 3.5/5

Unfortunately there was nothing very tasty about the menu. It lacked greatly in spices, seasoning and accompaniments. I have to cook my own food? Too much work with little satisfaction. Plus, we were advised after the fact that there was a cut off time to order sushi, long before closing. All you can eat is too much. We will not be returning.

Terrible. I ate her once last year and I find the food ok but service was kinda disorganized and they don't give you exactly what u requested. You really need a lot of patience to get your food. Today I said I'll give it a try so after work me and hubby drove down there to get their lunch which ends at 3:00, we came at 2:25 and the man with the suite told us that they are close for lunch already? Coz they still need to clean up blah blah blah.. it doesn't seems right to me so I said you should change the information at your website then, and he's saying I hope you understand blah blah.. i don't mind paying for dinner but if you are saying that you're closed for lunch at 2:30 bec u need to clean up then I don't think that's a valid reason. We will never go back there again. NEVER!

This place has terrible service ... I came here with a group of friends on a Monday night and had asked for a bowl of rice and more meat to cook ... I had waited 25 minutes while 3 other families ( who all just happened to be oriental) had got multiple items dropped off to them... Then they ask why they didnt get a tip... The staff are rude and very racist ... They only provide good service to those of the same race
Tin.rose
Rude Service. We thought it would be a wonderful experience to eat at Chako BBQ for a birthday dinner. But there were many things that went wrong especially with their rude staffs. From waiting too long for waiters to serve us to receiving wrong orders and chilly attitudes. It was our first time going to a kbbq and this place really ruined us for ever thinking of heading to ANY KBBQ. I just hope your staffs fixed your attitude or else you would lose lots of customers.

Like. We used to ordered Korean BBQ at Korean restaurants before Chako opened its door, the BBQ meals at other Korean restaurants are expensive, and we were still hungry afterwards.
We haven't visit Chako for a while, hope it's still good.
For The Love Of Food
Amazing BBQ. It's by far the best ever if you don't mind cooking and smelling like your food. My favourite are the beef dishes (ribs, and thin steak) and the shrimp. Try the thin beef steak with bbq pineapple and bean sprouts over rice with the special sauce they give you to bbq with. It's fantastic.

Bad Food Bad Service. I called to make a reservation for a birthday get together for 15 people, and the person on the phone must have told me four times that we only have a two hour limit and not to be late. When we arrived, there was no friendly greeting, I was immediatly asked scornfully if everyone I made a reservarvation for was going to be there. They stressed again that we only have a two hour limit and that they are very busy. When we were seated, another worker gave us the same lecture which was repeated by the waiter AGAIN who told us of the two hour limit. After we ordered, we were told AGAIN about the two hour time limit on our table. We weren't given any instructions on how to cook the food, and the waiter repeatedly brought us the wrong order. When a friend of mine called to a waiter, the waiter pointed at another person, and the second waiter made eye contact but they both walked away. 70% of the time was spent cooking the food and the food pieces were very small. When it was time to pay, the tip was included in the bill which we did not realize because it was printed so smally on a sign at the front. Unfortunatly, we ended up over tipping for the horrible service we recieved. As we were leaving the waitress yelled at us complaining that four people didn't pay, but we did, and she just didn't calculate the money properly. Overall the experience was very stressful and I will never be returning to a Chako restaurant!
Ruinednight
Cold and disinterested service. My girlfriend brought me to Chako restaurant with rave reviews of delicious food, and plenty of it. We decided to go for the late night special, all you can eat food for 12.99$ weeknight special (plus hidden charges). As we arrived, we were greeted by our monosyllabic hostess and waitress who seated us next to a wide open window- we asked to move and she lead us without a word to a nearby booth. The service was quick, at least, but dishes were thrown down without care nor a word. I was expecting a brief spiel on how to cook the food, times, ect, but nothing was offered.

That's the premise of Chako bbq- nothing is offered, and only given begrudgingly when asked. Unspeaking workers come by to refill the oil of your table, and if you are lucky they will lift the grill to pour the oil underneath, unlike our server who decided to pour the oil without lifting it, splashing oil on our cooking food. If you stand up to talk to a worker, who will avoid eye contact with you, you may be lucky enough to get your water refilled, parching your thirst as you breath in the smoky air from your cooking food.

The bill, which came unasked and brusquely, explained the level of service. A 10% service charge, of which there was no prior mention, was added. This is new, and it is no surprise why it is added. We paid exact cash without the service charge, as there was no way we were tipping for this night ruining service. As we walked out, our server was finally interested in us, chasing us down to get the 2.5$ service charge. It turns out that it was clearly mentioned that there was a 10% charge... clearly mentioned on the back of a small sign at the front desk advertising mothers day rates (unless you hate your mother, don't take her).

We then asked to see a manager, but it turned out we were looking at the supervisor in charge, who told us to call a number about the service charge. This was not a 24/7 number, so we walked away, never to return.

I do not recommend this restaurant. Never in my life have I not tipped, but there is a first for everything, and Chako was a first for me.

Skip the sushi!! Great selection of meats!! I would definitely come back..

Great food, poor service!!!. First off the food is excellent! However, the service was horrible if not racist. We went for lunch as a group of six caucasion people and were greeted by the manager who seated us immediatley, but wouldn't speak to or look at the one female in our party. There weren't many people in the restaurant at the time, but it was easily15 to twenty minutes before a server finally came to our table to take our order. Yet an Asian family that came in five minutes after were seated and sitting right behind us were served within minutes of sitting down and had there food brought out to them before our server even ackowledged our presence. Once our order was taken it was another 10 minutes before the food arrived. They came back to check on us a few times throughout the meal mainly to take away empty dishes, but never offered refills on the drinks. Anything we wanted we had to ask for. It was as if the server didn't want to be there and we were an inconvenience, he had a look of annoyance on his face most of the time. In the end I would eat there agian just because the food was excellent, but I hope the service is better.

You can't mess up Korean BBQ. You have a grill in front of you and they bring out the raw meat and vegetables. You then cook said raw meat and vegetables. Simple. Very tasty. Make sure you don't have other going out plans after this place. You end up smelling like food afterwards. Don't bother with the sushi. Disgusting. Overall, great decor and service. Would go again.

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE service. My girlfriend and I went in at 2 and we were greated with a "we close at 3" when it was just barely 2. Not a good first impression. The servers served more with grunts and mumbles. We were not given our beverage until half way through our meal, mind you the restaurant at the time was empty. As a former server myself, I was instructed to serve beverages first as eating without one can be a choking hazard. Finally when we reviewed our bill we were relieved to finally go but not before the server literally through the receipt at our faces for not tipping! I mean if the bad service wasn't enough he had the audacity to throw the receipt. When we complained to the manager he said "it's because you didn't tip" I'm sorry people but tips are not a right, it's a privilege that must be earned through at the very least decent service. I recommend going to a restaurant actually worth your money and leisure time.

Different experiences. I cannot decide whether I dislike it or hate it.

Depending on certain days, the food is either great or just mediocre. I guess it depends on which batch you receive (whether you are lucky you got a nice and well seasoned food). As for the environment, it is not the greatest. It is hard to capture the employees attention, and some of the workers are beyond rude. One of them counted the money at the table, and asked if we were going to give more tips (we gave the appropriate amount). We did not, and he ended up being really rude with his actions. He completely ignored us and walked off in the end.

Overall, not really a fan of the place, but my friends love it.
Roxie
Horrible service, we felt very rushed for whatever reason the servers just awkwardly stood there. Food was just ok, nothing special : S

Disappointment. A couple of friends vouched that this place is THE BEST for kbbq. I went here quite hopeful for a good time.
Service: Below Average
Atmosphere: Average
Food: Poor
Maybe I am a picky eater, but the food was very salty. I ended up drinking alot of water. The one thing that disgusted me the most was how quickly the grill turned black and how thick the layer of soot was. We tried to ask the servers to change our grills several times, but it took a long time. Eventually the food that was cooked on the black grills tasted horrible. We ended up cooking very little, as each time we needed a grill change it would take forever.
Stephy
Average. Nothing special. I felt as if they didnt offer alot of items on their menu. I would have liked it if they added more veggies onto their list. Prehaps add more dessert on their menu as well. Quality of food is good, all the meats tasted yummy. Service is quick and helpful. Pricing is expensive, and only worth eating here at 10pm to take advantage of their special promo.

Great place to eat. I love this restaurant. I have eaten here a few times. When I entered this restaurent I was greeted at the door. We were seated promptly. The decor was well put together, clean and modern. This is a buffet style bbq restaurent. All you can eat. The food is well seasoned, and the perportions were perfect. The service was adiquite. They have a wide selection of food choices and drinks. They were quick to clean all the empty dishes, and asked if we wanted to order any other foods from the menu. The price point was meduim/high, but well worth it.

Drove by last night and decided to give it a try. Overall enjoyed it. The food was really good. What they are lacking is definitely customer service. Asked for rice that never came and had to wait 25 minutes before anyone checked on us. Would go back and give it another try..

The chako in Scarborough is WAYYYY BETTER than this piece of s#*t!!! There service is Terrible!! Just awful!! Like another reviewer mentioned! We were half way through our meal and the servers turned off the gas and took away the black BBQ thingy where u put the food to cook it. And the worst thing is that they gave us the bill when we didn't even asked for It! It hasn't even been past 1hr since we've been eating!!when we were handed the bill, the women literally stood there and grabbed our money and left!! She literally watched our every move until we paid her!!! Horrendous service! Save ur time and money and go to the Scarborough one instead!! Much better service and decor and I swear the food is better there too!!!!!!
Ashish Sethi
Terrible service and mediocore food. we had to ask for our drinks more than 3 times. we'. were brought forks instead of requested items twice and overall were treated with an awful and rude attitude. we were eating dinner and the waitress asked to pay our bill. we said we were eating. we were eating dessert and she came twice. and while we were just sitting and talking she came once more. and we all had to pull out our money infront of her and watch her count it at our table are you kidding me?!! after tipping her a low amount she said that she will remember us and prompted to throw our changev back at our table. what garbage service. must say we were greeted by the supervisor once at our table and he did give us good service but we will never come back here
Christine Rumanouw
Service is too slow. Waited for 10 minutes, not even a single waiter come to see us to offer anything. Service should be faster, as they actually dont need to cook anything. Left the place without saying anything.

Very Disappointing!. I was very disappointed that Chako charged us an additional $2.00 for my one year old. My child didn't even eat their food! We will never go back!
CoCoNut
Been here a few times. Somehow the service and quality is slipping. @ each visit. Also I think it about time they offer a few more sauces on the side so we can change up the flavor a bit.
Karen L
Meat all tasted the same. The first few bites it was good but after a while it all tasted the same...since the seasoning was identical on all the meats so couldn't even tell what i was eating

the service is friendly and great atmosphere to hang with friends but food-wise i think once is enough for me
Tina Ho
I can't believe they charged my 17 month old $2. He didn't even eat!!
Doll
Good stuff. It's a loud and fun atmosphere at least the time I or my bf has gone. We've only had the bbq and it was pretty good as well as the cold sides. Overl good place to fill up on bbq meat. =)
Tee
All their meat tasted the same. They must have marinaded in the same sauce. I thought everything was too salty. Also this place gets really loud at dinner time

Awesome atmosphere and food. Me and my friends eat here often and enjoy ourselves every time. Late night special (after 10:00 pm) is well worth it for all you can eat under $15. Food is always great, the marinade on the meats is amazing. Service is good and fast, restaurant and washrooms are kept clean. Highly recommended

Late Night Treat. I had the late-night special with another person and it was wonderful. The marinade that they use on their meat is wonderful. Also, this is going to be a bit silly, but I enjoyed the selection of soy sauce that they had. Even though it's soy sauce, it's nice to have a selection.

The price was reasonable for late-night all you can eat and the meat was still relatively fresh. Good place to try out if you haven't already.
Hash
Great sushi. I have done take outs twice. Great experience
G-Man
Incredible. Don't miss it.. This is a very cool designed Korean Barbecue joint. Good service, good prices. Cook it up yourself and enjoy. Beat the weekend rush for lower prices and no wait.
Kittenie
Great service!. The food was quite good, and the service was superb tonight! Keep it up!

Nice for winter and if you have the football team coming over to stay. Have to do lots of burpees before going to the restaurant. On this occasion we skied for the whole day in a ski resort in Ontario to build up an appetite.
Hellokitty0313
The ribs were the best along with the chicken. And grilled pineapple was so juicy. And green tea ice-cream for dessert.
FoodigatorJ
Chako serves Korean BBQ as well as Japanese sushi for lunch, dinner and late night. Me and my friends arrived for dinner on a weekend without reservation and ended up waiting around 40 minutes. Be aware that it gets super smokey inside the restaurant and yes, you will smell like Korean BBQ from head to toe after. To be honest, waiting for 40 minutes in that smokey resta

It looks great inside, nice and polished, but getting a good server here is pretty much a coin flip. A majority of them don't want to be there but the last time I was there, my server was a plain looking girl with black glasses and black hair tyed in a ponytail. She was polite and nice about everything. I will warn you that the older gentleman at the front desk is obnoxiously rude and ignores you but I'm certain he's the manager. You're going to have to deal with him until you get a table.
Cook.eat.carouse.
I liked the pork short ribs, whereas my husband liked the beef. The meats came marinated, but somehow the marinade of one dish was a bit similar in taste to another. So, it was a bit monotone on the palate.

I stopped into Chako the other day for my guy’s birthday. What’s better for a guy than BBQ and a ton of protein right?

When we arrived, we were promptly seated and had our orders taken. The restaurant itself looked nice and the restrooms were clean.

We went on a Monday night and I believe the All You Can Eat Menu price was $16.99-17.99. The weekend price (Fri-Sun) comes with more menu items and is $18.99-$19.99. The weekday menu has roughly about 30 menu items to choose from and the dinner one roughly about 45. There is a regular menu as well if that’s what you would prefer.

Our picks consisted of the following:

-Sides: miso soup (good), rice (seemed overcooked - a little mushy)
-Rolls: california roll (good), futomaki roll (meh) - I think this is the one we tried…loaded with veggies, crab and tofu.
-Cold Dishes: bean sprouts (good), radish (my absolute fav!)
-meat: pork (my fav), beef (good), tiger shrimp (didn’t eat…it was fully intact…head, tail, shell, veins)
-dessert: green tea ice cream (so good!)

Overall, really good! I had teriyaki sauce mixed with hot sauce (which you need to ask for) on the side which i dipped my meat in for some extra flavour. It was great!

FYI - be prepared to smell like smokey BBQ for the rest of the night!
Also, if you are doing the All You Can Eat menu, be prepared to start grilling yourself - that's half the fun!
Stefan Coltescu
My go-to spot for some Korean BBQ. The late night all you can eat option is definitely the best option, as you get the full range of beef, ribs, chicken, pork and seafood. All at your disposal to grill at the table, as you like it. This also comes with unlimited servings of rice, tofu, and veggies. All this is available for great value for money, as the late night prices are fairly cheap. To top it off, you also get all you can eat servings of mango and green tea ice cream, a great way finish off the meal.
