Review Thai Basil - Richmond Hill

Great place for Thai food. Service was good and the food was really yummy. Thai Shrimp cake was yummy. Thai Green Curry was spicy and got a beautiful flavour to it. We asked for pad Kee mao in glass noodles and they made it for us and it was tasty. Definitely will go to this place again.

I've been coming here for at least 8 years once in a while and it's one of my continuous go to Thai restaurants! Came here for dinner as a table of 5 about two weeks ago, the portions were all decent size and great for sharing family style! We ordered: Pomelo Salad Green Mango Salad Beef & Chicken Satay BBQ Pork Jowel Mussamun Curry Beef Brisket Curry Soft Shelled Crab Bangkok Style Pad Thai Garlic Prawns Young Coconut Fried Rice Favourites were pomelo salad, pork jowel, Brisket Curry, pad Thai and coconut rice. The two curries we ordered were not spicy but actually sweet which was interesting to try! The coconut fried rice was baked in tin foil and infused with coconut flavour and a chewy rice texture - very unique and delicious! Can't wait to come back next time!

There are lots of great Thai restaurants in the GTA and Thai Basil definitely is one of them. First, the service was great, friendly and efficient all the way, our orders came quick with zero delay. The food was amazing, we ordered the "Khao soi" noodles and the "pad gra pao" and it was spot on to what we had back in Chang Mai but thankfully not as spicy. If you enjoy Thai cuisine then you owe it to yourself to check the place out. Super clean, tasty and well priced.

Amazing food that fits the Indian taste pallate so smoothly. Drinks were complementing the food choices and overall ambiance was awesome as well.

Nice ambience, food and good Customerservice. Food is tasty. Ice cream may not be something you may want from here. Surprisingly their spring rolls are different and better than other Thai/Chinese places.

Thai Basil has been a local staple for us for quite some time. It’s great to have such flavourful & authentic Thai food in our neighborhood. My hubby and I ended up here for his Birthday after not having dined at Thai Basil during the pandemic. We had the weekday lunch menu which is a good value for your money. It includes a spring roll, soup with the main course. Everything was perfectly spiced; an explosion of flavour in our mouths. Service was great- they were attentive, responsive and friendly. Definitely a must try!

This was the best thai food I’ve ever had! The red curry especially was amazing - will definitely be coming back. I also ordered the peach dragonfruit mocktail and it was delicious. Very good experience

We really enjoyed our meal at Thai Basil! We had the lunch special on a Sunday afternoon, and tired the Pad See Ew and Khao Soi. Both were delicious, and came in good portions. The meals also came with a soup and spring roll (both were yummy too). We also tried the mojito mocktail (lime and lychee), and although delicious, it was overpriced for a non-alcoholic drink ($7). We will definitely be coming back!

This was our first visit to Thai Basil and it won't be our last. We celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary. The food is Thai at its best, we've been to Thailand. Excellent service as well. We are already looking forward to our next meal.

2016/12/18<br/>Thai Basil is a very nice restaurant with a pretty decent lunch combo. Where some restaurants limit their lunch specials to weekdays, this restaurant offers their specials seven days a week. <br/><br/>Most of the combos are $9.95 and include "Tom Yum" Thai Hot and Spicy Soup and a Vegetarian Spring Roll. The soup was aromatic and full of flavour, with just enough heat to wake up your taste buds. Although the spring roll is listed as vegetarian, I could have sworn that it also had some minced pork. Nice and crispy on the outside, both crunchy and soft bites on the inside. <br/><br/>SWMBO opted for the Chicken Pad Thai. She thought that the dish could have been a little bit spicier, but otherwise thought if was a good dish. <br/><br/>I chose the Thai Basil Eggplant and Minced Pork. Nice touch with the steamed rice, formed into the shape of a five-pointed star. The eggplant was soft, as it should be, and the pork provided some balance to the texture. <br/><br/>Service was very good. A nice find in Richmond Hill.

used to love this restaurant....tonight had the worst experience ever.<br/>Ordered takeout, we're vegan. got home and the food had meat in it. Called the restaurant to explain the situation and they replaced the food and offered to deliver the food.<br/><br/>Driver comes with the replacement food and at my doorstep, asks me to show him the food with the meat, makes me put my hand in the takeout container of curry to pull out the meat and show him. Opens each dish that had eat in it, and made me show him the meat in the dishes.<br/><br/>This was ridiculous....having to stick my hands in the food, ON MY DOORSTEP.<br/><br/>1 hour later, the restaurant called me 5 times in a row, my wife picked up the phone, and the restaurant representative to explain that there was no meat in the food and we made a mistake. She continued to argue with my wife for 15 minutes to state "i'm just telling you there was no meat in the food and that you should tell us if you can't eat meat or eggs etc, that the restaurant never made a mistake and that I made a mistake in not telling the restaurant what the definition of vegan is"<br/><br/>The representative just kept repeating herself that they were not at fault, there was never any meat in the food (LIARS) and that they want to clarify if we ever order again with them, to clearly state that everything vegan's can't eat. <br/><br/>This representative REFUSED to listen to the customer and acknowledge that they put meat and eggs in our food. didn't care that my wife also has allergies to food and could have gotten sick if she ate the contaminated food.<br/><br/>This is the 2nd time they put meat in the food in error....but the 1st time they refused to acknowledge their error....and then called to argue that they were never in the wrong.<br/><br/>NEVER GOING BACK....WILL BE TELLING EVERYONE I KNOW TO AVOID THIS....it's a shame because it was the only good thai restaurant in York region.

We had to try their Pad Thai. It was quite authentic, not like some places where the sauce was like ketchup or was too sweet. It was sufficiently packed with chicken (which is our choice of meat) eggs, tofu, green onions and bean sprouts. Served with peanuts and fresh lime, it was very tasty. Not the best Pad Thai ever but still good.<br/><br/>We also tried another dish that was not very spicy as a compromise to DD#2 who does not like spicy food too much. I wanted to try some Spicy Basil but ended up with Fried Vermicelli in Yellow Curry. The fried rice vermicelli had pork, eggs, green & red peppers and tossed with yellow curry. It was also a good one. <br/><br/> To continue with the carb-loading, we ordered Pineapple Fried Rice. Now, this is a must try in this place! The fried rice was mixed with eggs, pineapple, ham, raisins, cashew nuts, beans and topped with dried shredded pork. It was beautifully presented in a pineapple cut in half. A meal in itself as it also had some chicken. <br/><br/>Now, the hands-down winner for our group was the Thai Red Curry. DD#2 had a taste of it and agreed it tasted awesome (it was such a tiny drop, she was just most likely just being agreeable to the general table consensus). We chose beef this time. The red curry was sweet and spicy with bamboo shoots, eggplants, red peppers, basil, pineapple and coconut milk. Best with Jasmine rice. Super Yum! Not quite the tongue-scorching curry I’ve had in the streets of Bangkok but it was something we all truly enjoyed! So much so that my mom went back less than a week later with our aunt to have red curry again!

Decided to have lunch at Thai basil today. The experience was mediocre at best. I ordered the lunch special, which included the soup and spring roll. The soup was terrible, lacking in flavour and had a lemony after taste that I still can't get out of my mouth. The chicken pad Thai I ordered tasted like ketchup which is not a good thing, I've had better pad Thai's for a lot less money and better tasting. I will not be returning.

I was excited to try this Thai restaurant as there's not too many good options uptown. <br/><br/>We both ordered off their lunch menu and got the Thai yellow curry chicken with potatoes, onions, coconut milk and chicken served with star shaped seamed rice. We also ordered the Mussamun curry beef brisket with potatoes, peanuts and onions served with steamed rice.<br/><br/>Their lunch menu is available from 11:30am until 5pm daily, so its a great option if you want soup and a spring roll to go with.<br/><br/>I found their curries to lack complexity and flavour, their brisket wasn't as tender as I'd liked it to be and the service was slow.<br/><br/>I guess of you're looking for lunch options in the Richmond Hill area this would be of good value but otherwise I wouldn't get the curry dishes.<br/><br/>

Came in for lunch with the family and surprises to see they offer lunch combos on the weekend. Each combo came with Tom Yum soap and spring roll. The soap was quite tasty and flavourful but nothing special about the spring roll. I had the yellow curry chicken so the spice factor was manageable for me. I don't think I could handle the green or red curry. Portion was perfect for lunch but it could have poured more curry sauce as I like to soak my rice with it. Husband had the mussaman (not sure of spelling) and it was sorta bland. We had better tasting of this dish elsewhere.

I was not impressed with their food. I had pad Thai for lunch and it was ketchappy, and over cooked. There was an appetizer that came with the lunch menu, I forgot what is was but I remember the appetizer was better than the main.

When we came it was packed and after we were seated we thought, 'its busy and food will be slow'.<br/><br/>Not the case, there must be 10 people working in the kitchen because we all ordered something different and everything came at once and was well cooked!! The other table also ordered at the same time AND almost all the other tables were full!!<br/><br/>When you first walk in there's a great wall Stine thing fountain, dark wood with Thai touches classy casual<br/><br/>There's music playing its not very loud, to allow for conversation. Awesome. Note: they play music from all over the world not just Thailand. <br/><br/>With a full restaurant of talking people we could still all hear each other.<br/><br/>I loved my dish. I got the tofu with garlic and chilli. It was nice and spicy. Yum! Huge portions!<br/><br/>Everyone was nice. No one smiled though, it was weird<br/><br/>Cost wise itpretty reasonable for the amount of food you get.<br/><br/>All and all thumbs up. Will be back for sure!!

Great and consistent thai food. The taste is authentic and the portions are quite big. I like all the items other than the pad thai, which I feel is a bit dry. Great ambience.

Birthday at Thai. I loved this place. The ambiance the service and the food were wonderful. I would totally recommend it. The price was really good for the amount as well. We spent $153.96 for 8 people and we got drinks and desserts. I would really recommend the BBQ Pork and Mango salad as starters. We also ordered the Pineapple rice, great presentation and it was delicious, Basil chilli fried noodles (chef recommendation, was awesome), Green curry and steamed rice, and vermicelli noodles were amazing. The best part was the deep fried banana and mango ice cream at the end. Yummy!!

Best Thai Food in Ontario. I have eaten Thai food all over ontario, these guys have it bang on. Really good food at a decent price point. most of the people on here that dont like the food probably didnt order a THAI dish. you wouldnt go to a steak house for chicken would you?

Beware very very Salty!!. Had the red duck curry with rice. At the time thought is was tasty even though I found there could have been a bit more duck. Anyways that evening I must of drank a gallon of water. Just could not get that salty parched taste out of my mouth. I might go back but will definitely request a reduction in the amount of salt they put into my meal otherwise I'll just have to walk out.

Great food & service. I was there yesterday for dinner. Food was amazing. We ordered tom yum goong soup, pomelo salad, Mussamun curry beef brisket, thai basil eggplant & minced pork, and Thai basil fried rice. Everything was delicious and I overheard next table's conversation and said their chicken was good, too. Our server (a young gentleman) was very attentive. He brought us extra napkins and always refilled our water without being asked. and he's very friendly. I would definitely go back again and again and again... :D

First visit at this location. Good food and service. Though the downtown location is better, this is a good option in the area. 80%

Most dishes a bit heavy on salt and drowned in sauce when it shouldn't be (salads etc) - would have liked to try a few more dishes but just the 2 of us. Decent portions <br/><br/>Tom Yum Goong Lemongrass Prawn Soup - Flavour was good but Salty <br/><br/>Mango and Green  Papaya shrimp - WAY too much salt. Wouldn't order again <br/><br/>Thai Red curry Duck . Nice amount of duck.  Best dish of the night. you won't like it if you do not like basil. Not spicy. <br/><br/>Tung Choi in Shrimp paste.  Very tasty --could have used fresher veggies as the stalks were a bit chewy but we still liked it. <br/><br/>there should be a choice in between like and dislike. will give another shot

Love it!. I have eaten at this restaurant so many times now- it's not funny. Why? Simply because it encompasses all the nice things about going out to eat. Nice surroundings, good wait staff, well dressed wait staff- no short skirts and tight tees here, clean and of course the food is lovely! <br/><br/>The only thing that I suggest is that there is an ice tea on the menu that is best for a dessert...as it is too overpowering with other food and very rich...nice taste- just too much with other food.

Didn't taste like I use to have. I have been eatind at sweet basil for over 6 years and the waitress is not the ones that I use to know.
Qqrobyn
The food isn't as good as people say it is. The soup is cold, the fried rice is bland, and the service is very poor.
Peter
Food was below average. Pineapple chicken fried rice is so sticky. The menu is mid price to expensive.

Awesome. Great price for their lunch specials! 8dollars for a combo with soup and spring roll! Im Asian and i do have a pretty high standards for thai food and this place got The best green curry chicken I've had so far in GTA. Will definitely come back again with friends and family.

Too bad this app does not have "middle of the road", instea of "like it" or "don't like it". I gave this restaurant a thumbs up for effort and quick service. The was on par just slightly above average and the ambiance was nice and cool. Still, I found the taste over all lacking that extra feel that you are really eating genuine Thai food ie. Lime @ yng / egl. Perhaps in time, they can easily become one of the north ends best kept Thai secret. Good effort!
Think Food About It
Back to Thai Basil itself. Coincidentally, Thai Basil has been in operation since 2004 which means that it was one of the first restaurants to have been designated with the Thai Select certification. Their older restaurant is in downtown Toronto, having won the 2009 Best Thai In Toronto Award. The newer venue, and the one that I went to on both occasions, opened in Richmond Hill in 2010. When thinking about a scene from a Thai restaurant, the words exotic, tasty, and healthy are usually the ones that spring to mind. Thai food, like so many of the other Southeast Asian cuisine, is more than just a meal; it is a culinary experience that explores the intricate nature of how traditional culture is manifested into the food that is served. Most people imagine that Thai food is just spicy. It is true for the most part, because of Thai cuisine’s preference for chilli. However, Thai cuisine actually offers a mixed array of tastes that ranges from the sweet and sourness of tamarind flavours, savoury spicy soups, and sweet and delightful desserts (all of which you’ll soon see below). At Thai Basil, these culinary traditions are displayed, and it is no wonder that it holds such a great dining atmosphere. Thai Basil uses contemporary Thai decor, decorating their restaurant with artwork, sculptures, and even hand-crafted fine dinging ware.

I was recommended by my Laotian friend to try out Thai Basil as he mentioned the dishes were authentic and that some of the dishes were comparable to what he ate in Thailand. I cannot comment on the authenticity of the dishes but know what I like. To my surprise, although the hostess and servers were Thai, the owners were Chinese.

I adored this pad thai! I appreciated how the peanuts were served in a small pile to the side of the noodles so that someone who didn’t like peanuts all over the noodles could easily remove it as necessary. The ingredients were fresh, the chicken pieces were smooth, and the thin rice noodles were very soft and drenched in sauce.

Large selection of lunch menu items at reasonable prices. Good choice for Authentic Thai food.

like i said, it's a good place for gathering.. so we came with a group of 6 on a weekend.. (how could i miss sharing such a great place with my friends?) having a nice dinner!

Overall I’m definitely going to revisit because I think the curry is amazing and such cheaply priced. I’d love to try other things on the menu too...

Overall, everything was only mediocore. Saigon Star is better. I think I would only come back for the fish as it doesn’t offer in all too many places.

Everything was super delicious and authentic, they do pride themselves for having authentic food cooked by authentic Thai chefs (it says so on their sign). I would definitely recommend this place, the food was fabulous and the prices are off the charts and I would most certainly come back.

On our dinner outing there in particular, we had a fairly large group and ordered family-style, which gave me the opportunity sample a wide variety of items, and so I can say with confidence that the food is all quite fabulous there.

Overall experience:<br/><br/>- Good service<br/><br/>- Mediocre food<br/><br/>- Nothing special about the atmosphere<br/><br/>I've heard good things about Thai Basil and I live in the area so I decided to give it a shot! Unfortunately, it did not live up to the hype as expected. I ordered the Tom Yum Goong Noodle Soup with Chicken. The food took about 15-20 minutes to arrive. To start off, the Tom Yum soup was quite bland and lacked a lot of spice to it. Not to mention, the chicken was very dry. A majority of the dish were noodles. For about $10, there are a ton of alternatives.

Thai Basil, Sweet Basil, Thai Basil Kitchen... Sometimes I really confused which one I been to.. which one I hate... which one I would recommend...<br/><br/>Thai Basil is another new Thai restaurant that opened up right across from Restoran Malaysia, hint if there is a hour line up at Restoran Malaysia maybe you can just hop over and try Thai Basil instead.<br/><br/>Thai Basil suppose to be a second location from the successful location down at the Annex<br/><br/>Lunch Special starting from $6.95 is from everyday till 5 pm which is great for late lunch.<br/><br/>If you ask me if the food is authentic Thai... from my few visit to Thailand and my experience of Thai food, I have to say no...<br/><br/>What is lacking then?? The spice and the herbs and the freshness of Thai cuisine that's what it is lacking...<br/><br/>Pad Thai with Chicken Lunch Combo ($7.95)<br/><br/>- Tom Yum Soup that comes with the lunch combo is one of the better one I have in Toronto... thick, with hint of coriander and mushed tomato... tons of chili pepper flakes inside and is really rich in taste... definitely not the water down version or the ones from the supermarket's Tom Yum paste<br/><br/>- Spring Roll was quite good... has a lot of flavours and nice and crispy<br/><br/>- Pad Thai, on the other hand, was not up to par. Too much sauce makes it really soggy and oily... and it is not as good as the photos definitely not as good! The taste is really one dimension and on the salty side. The Chicken though is white meat was tough and dry...<br/><br/>Services was not too bad...efficient but you have the feeling that the waitresses wish they are somewhere else.. somewhere nice and warm where people bring them drinks instead of the other way around!

I was recommended by my Laotian friend to try out Thai Basil as he mentioned the dishes were authentic and that some of the dishes were comparable to what he ate in Thailand. I cannot comment on the authenticity of the dishes but know what I like. To my surprise, although the hostess and servers were Thai, the owners were Chinese.<br/><br/>With their original location in downtown Toronto, we were happy that we were able to try the second location without making the trek downtown. The décor was nice, clean and had a zen-like feel with a waterfall Buddha statue at the front of the restaurant.<br/><br/>We ordered a variety of dishes and drinks to get a feel for their menu during the family celebration and would recommend the following (starting from top left in the picture):<br/><br/>Pomelo salad-This was the first time I have seen it at a Thai restaurant. It was simple and a great start to the meal.<br/>Lettuce wrap salad- Great seasoning on the beef.<br/>Thai BBQ pork<br/>Thai roasted chicken-It was moist.<br/>Thai red curry beef- Rich flavours and was perfect with rice.<br/>Panang curry pork- Generous portions with a thick curry sauce.<br/>Thai basil chili noodle<br/>Baked fried rice in young coconut chicken- I loved the presentation!<br/>Thai basil clams- Amazing dish with the right amount of spice and plump clams. A must!<br/>What I did not enjoy was the pad thai with chicken. It had to be the worst pad Thai I have ever eaten as the noodles were ultra soggy and the sauce tasted like there was too much ketchup. This dish makes Spring Roll’s pad thai shine. My sister and I also complained about our alcoholic drinks as well as it tasted totally virgin and it was overly sweet.<br/><br/>Overall:<br/><br/>The restaurant is worth checking out with starters and curries as the stand out items. Although the pad thai portion was generous, I did not enjoy the texture or the sweet sauce. The restaurant does a great job with presentation and providing attentive service. I’d like to try the downtown location at Bloor and Spadina to see how the 2 restaurants compare. Happy eating!
