Review Restoran Malaysia - Richmond Hill

Sunil Kadikar
Delicious authentic fresh food, amazing and friendly service from Angela. Had an awesome lunch here. We got the Mee Goreng (noodles), Singapore Chicken and rice, chicken/crab/corn soup and shrimp okra. Finished off with some Malaysian tea and mango sticky rice for dessert. Was easy to get a table at lunch, but apparently they are busier for dinner on weekends. Looking forward to going back to try more!

Having a restaurant that serves food from where you come from is a big plus but that also means that the price tag is huge. Where I come from, the food they serve is probably 20% of the price or less with much better taste (pardon me for being spoilt by really good food back home). Service is really good, they came promptly to take orders and the food came freshly made and the portions were pretty liberal (compared to almost all food outlets at downtown). Our water was topped up promptly as well as there was some good heat in the food so that's a big plus too! When I'm feeling rich, I'll definitely come here again to satisfy my home food craving.

A bit underwhelming. I liked the penang laksa the most: authentic and flavourful (a bit sharp on the seasoning). The satay was pretty decent and the marinate was not too sweet. Roti canai was a disappointment. It lacked crispiness and some parts tasted like uncooked flour. The belachan beans was more like low quality XO sauce and the belachan did not really come out.

I went for a lunch when it was open for dining in. It's large space with enough spacing btw tables with partitions. The lunch set was really big portion and the price was really affordable. The taste was average but skewers were pretty nice.

It was my first time having Malaysian food at this restaurant. The decoration was pleasant and very relaxing. They offered a great variety of Singaporean, Malay & Thai cuisine. The food quality was good & the service was excellent. Although it was a bit pricey but my overall experience was great so, it was worth it.

What is Malaysian cuisine? A good combination of Indian and Chinese cuisines. This busy restaurant offers the familiar food that we love like pad thai, green and red curry but I decided to order the fried chicken and it was a balanced mix of Biryani and Chinese fried rice!

It's been years since I last ate here and the quality of food has changed. The portion sizes were good but the food was very lightly seasoned. The price was steep for the quality at a richmond hill restaurant.

As a Singaporean living in the GTA with severely limited options for food from back home, this place is a very reasonable option for me if I am missing home, although prices are on a slightly steeper side albeit the portions can be easily shareable between 2-3 people. For a restaurant that claims to serve Malaysian food, it is absurd that the curry is an extra charge with the Roti Canai/Prata when it is a default combination, much like a coffee shop charging extra for sugar with coffee. Although the curry is an extra charge, it lies more on the watery side when it’s supposed to be packed with spices and slight sourness. Nevertheless, it does the job for an eatery serving this dish thousands of kilometres away from Singapore/Malaysia. The Laksa was on the creamy but slightly bland side which gets easily fixed with their in house homemade sambal belacan. If not for the sambal belacan, the Laksa would have been a pity. The Laksa portion was generous with lots of fishcakes, Taupok (tofu chunks), yellow noodles and more, omitting the cockles which traditionally accompanies with the entire dish. The Teh Halia (ginger tea) seems pricey at $5, although it does some justice to the usual Teh halia that we get at “mamak” stalls in Singapore/Malaysia. Overall, as a Singaporean, I do approve the food served at this place although there is still room for improvement if authenticity is one of the aims of this restaurant.

2019/04/12<br/>Restoran Malaysia was bigger and fancier than we thought it would be. We have passed it many times, but this time we went in for lunch. The murals, the artwork, the fish tanks, and the tasteful decor added to the ambiance, and there was spacious seating for at least 100 split in two dining areas. Although the restaurant was less than half full at lunchtime, there were still quite a few diners. <br/><br/>We stayed with the lunch menu, where all 10 items were under $10. The main menu had dishes that were mostly $16 and higher. <br/><br/>SWMBO had the Pad Thai ($9), which came with chicken and shrimp. Sweet, sour, tasty. The portion was large enough that she took some home. <br/><br/>I chose the Malay Curry Chicken ($8.5). Thin slices of white meat cooked in a Malay Curry sauce. Enough heat to bring a mild sweat to my brow, but not too much. <br/><br/>Service was fast and friendly.

Good flavours, but small meat portions. Large menu with good variety. Cash only & no resos. Service was fine (contrary to other online reviews); perhaps it helps to go with regulars? (3.5/5)

I AGREE WITH KARI C'S REVIEW, ONE STAR IS TOO MANY.  Serving size is really tiny, overpriced and we needed 8 dishes and 2 appetizers for 6 people! The basil dishes only meant that they put two attached basil leaves on top as garnish. The angel fire beef was bitter and inedible. Service was mediocre - you ask for the bill, they clean up the table. You order another dish, they don't take the order. Furthermore, you have to be suspicious when there is a Buddha up front where they ask you for donations if you rub it. It does not say where the donations would go and many $5 bills inside .... hmmm.  CASH ONLY, NOT EVEN DEBIT CARDS .... make you wonder

Even 1 star is too much for this place. We were visiting from USA this place was absolutely Overpriced, and disgusting food, will never trust these people with what they'll put in the food and serve you, if you don't know what the food should look like or taste like then good luck. Horrible, horrible service, bad attitude was their second language. It seemed like they were doing us a favor by letting us eat at the restaurant. All of them had bad attitudes. Waitress brought wrong dish to the table and insisted we keep it otherwise she will have to pay for it, we explained that no one on our table eats fish and we ordered shrimp but she insisted that we pay for the dish, we requested for manager and she refused and said it was not necessary to call for manager then another waitress came acting like she will solve the problem she took the dish back and brought what we ordered, but something was wrong with the dish, it smelled horribly and looked disgusting, the employees were giggling, smirking and giving high five to each other, these people had no concision, my guests were in shock with the treatment we were receiving and the food. If I didn't have guest with me things would have been very different. They did not take Credit card and did not want to take US dollars, the cashier said we are not, currency exchange, Needless to say we paid for overpriced food and walked away hungry with a bad taste in our mouth. Never every will go there or recommend anyone unless you want to ruin your evening and throw your money.

Food is ok, but they don't accept debit or credit cards for a long time. I asked the hostess and she simply said they don't have the machine. What a stupid answer I got. 99.999% of restaurants accept debit or credit cards except this place.<br/><br/>Waitress was great but server was VERY rude.<br/><br/>Not going back to this place.

The boyfriend and I came here tonight because of the high ratings on Zomato. Total disappointment for sure! <br/><br/>One of the items we ordered was the green curry with chicken. The first piece we picked out, the chicken COMPLETELY RAW on one side! We waved someone down immediately. For an issue like this, you would expect them to make a new dish for you. In addition, the barely apologetic server said that 'they', pointing into the kitchen, will make another one for us. <br/><br/>We waited and waited and finally a new green curry chicken arrived. Not that we expected red carpet treatment but any sort of acknowledgement of how serious the issue was would have been reassuring. The server dropped it off and said, here's your green curry. The main concern is their lack of care, as if serving a raw piece of meat is business as usual. <br/><br/>To top it all off, every piece of chicken in this "new" dish was overcooked to oblivion. It was of course the same dish of chicken just dumped back into the pan. We are majorly disappointed given the high praise this place receives. <br/><br/>Lastly, the service was tailored to regular customers. The table next to us was were regulars and the staff was more attentive to them - regularly making small chat while topping up their water and we had empty glasses. Guess they're establish enough to not care about new customers!

This is a popular malaysia restaurant up in Richmond Hill. It was so popular that the owners updated the space and interiors. Unfortunately, the menu prices did increase; however, the food still taste great! I tried the pad thai yesterday and was great. They have this special drink called Iced Teh Tarik. It is pricy (4 bucks) but is a specialize milk tea drink that is cooled by constant pouring of the drink from tall heights.Note: I got lazy these days and haven't brought my camera with me. All pictures in this blurb are from the net.The singapore laksa is amazing and still the best one in Toronto.

"Ok place but little parking and a premium price"<br/><br/>Was looking for something completely different. My friends recommended Malaysia. So we all made the trek up to Richmond hill to check this place out. <br/><br/>First thing, the parking lot is ridiculously small. It took me a good half hour hunting around for a space. The fact a McDonalds drive thru cuts into parts of the lot doesn't help. <br/><br/>The place was packed; we were finally seat after a 30 minute wait. The wait staff were friendly and helpful. We didn't know quite what to order. We started off with the mango salad. We went with the daily fish special (sea bass), okra, another veggie dish that I can't pronounce, yellow curry, some beef and lamb skewers, and some fried rice. <br/><br/>The mango salad was ok; not sweet, far too sour for my liking; the fish sauce was also over powering. Disappointing. <br/><br/>The yellow curry was really good. We ordered roti to go along with it. A nice combination. <br/><br/>The beef and lamb skewers were very flavorful. The meat did not have the gaminess of the lamb. They were moist and not over cooked. Nice. <br/><br/>The sea bass was the most expensive dish. The fish was fairly small but cooked just right. No fishy smell or taste but the sauce was too much; could only taste sauce. That was too bad. <br/><br/>The veggie dishes were good. Nicely cooked and crunchy without being too raw and seasoned nicely. These were my favorite. <br/><br/>The fried rice finally came. The fried rice looked like it was good. it seemed too "wet"; sort of trying to fry rice with freshly steamed rice. There wasn't much flavor; very bland. <br/>The fried rice was most disappointing. <br/><br/>Overall the meal wasn't anything special. It seemed like any regular Chinese restaurant. But with a premium price. <br/>The restaurant is worth a try but I definitely won't be a regular there.

Restoran Malaysia is one of the more popular Malaysian restaurants in the GTA. The malaysian restaurant is found in this small plaza and is rather nice on the interior. Looked to be a nice place for a date or a large group of friends. The menu had so many great looking things (and tough to pronounce as well…) and the prices with the portions were fair as well.

We discovered a couple of dishes which we know will become staples! For DD#2, who is not fond of spicy food, we got some Malay Fried Chicken (Ayam Goring Kampung). Served with shrimp crackers, these boneless delights were crispy and so tasty! <br/><br/>Obviously, we had to try their Singapore Laksa, a popular spicy noodle soup. The Miki noodle was nicely cooked and immersed in a delicious curry broth. The bowl was packed with chicken, tofu, fish cake and shrimp with some bean sprouts. Hits the spot! It was the right amount of heat with the slightest amount of sweet. <br/><br/>They also have Thai offerings. We ordered Pineapple Fried Rice but we all preferred the one at Thai Basil right across the street! Same with the Tom Yum soup. Well, that should teach us a lesson eh? Why order Thai in a Singaporean resto, duh?<br/><br/>Service was also great! The host and servers were all smiles despite the busy hour and our orders came out at a reasonable amount of time. Prices were also not too bad at about $10 or so per dish. Definitely worth it.

Awesome quality food for good prices! Recommend the Pineapple Fried Rice & Red Curry Chicken! Always good! They only accept cash so be prepared!

Great food, good service, and good ambiance. They do not serve alcohol, but their tropical drinks are all excellent. Take out is available. Our usual dishes are green fish curry (highly recommended), pad Thai, nasi goreng (fried rice), and Tom yum soup. The eggplant dish is my favorite too. Everything is tasty!

The other night, I was taken here by a friend who lives in the area. I had actually heard a lot about this place so I was excited to try it. It was very busy which is always a good sign. <br/>They only accept cash, so I waited at our table while my friend went across the street to the bank. There was a family with small children on very loud phones and tablets sitting next to us and honestly, I had never needed a drink so badly. They don't serve alcohol but thankfully our lovely server moved us to a quieter table. <br/>For our appetizers we ordered chicken/beef satay skewers which came with the peanut sauce on the side. I don't eat beef but according to my friend they were good, as were my chicken satay (white meat). Then we ordered pineapple fried rice, red chicken curry and pad thai. Everything was really yummy. The plates were so big we had to take the rest home. Sadly, didn't have room for dessert so I will have to come back for sure.

Living literally five minutes away from the restaurant and also as a quite well known local restaurant, I have never tried it anytime in my life until my friends showed some interest and requested a gathering there.  It is quite shameful actually.  Because my family do not like eating anything aside from Chinese food, I never had the opportunity to eat other cuisines until I was in university or started working.

Great Food and Cheap!!!. I had the chicken curry with roti and pad thai which came to 20 bucks. Best 20 I've spent in a long time. Food was awesome!

Delicious. We went for lunch and it was amazing. Service and first experience here, a bit far but well worth it. It was not that busy so they really were on point with service. Try their roti and beef curry. Sooooo yummy! And their pat thai is pretty awesome.

Terrible service. I've been going to restoran Malaysia for years. Last night I went there with my family and my niece (age 3) is very picky with her food. I brought her some macaroni and meat and asked our waiter if he could warm up her food. He said so long as there is no pork that he would. Two minutes later he comes back with my nieces food in a container saying that this is not baby food and that he wouldn't be able to heat it up. I was shocked because the rest of us (9 people) have so much food on the table. My niece was hungry so I fed her the macaroni cold. A couple of minutes later our waiter came up to us and said that we have to stop. I said to call his manager because I'm not going to let my baby neice starve. Another lady came and said you can't feed her here. I said this is nonsense, how am I to eat while my niece starves? Then she noticed I was using their spoon so she said well you can't use our cutlery. I could not believe my ears. This was the most embarrassing thing restoran Malaysia could have ever done. We are Muslims eating halal food so obviously no pork. I will never go back to this restaurant after this. I hope this message somehow reaches the actual manager/owner of restoran Malaysia.

Great Laksa. Singapore Laksa is the only thing that I come for! Never had one this good. I've also tried pad thai here but wasn't as impressed.

Great Food. Great food and friendly service. I like the Pad Thai and the Cashew Beef.

Simply amazing!. Went here for an early Mother's Day dinner with a party of 5. The service was great! The waiters were really patient and helpful, they never once bothered us when we waited for the entire party to arrive and came right away when called for.<br/><br/>We ordered pad thai, pineapple rice, red curry, lots of roti, and the mixed chicken beef skewers. This filled us all up and we still had leftovers to pack. It was all super delicious (especially the roti) and I definitely plan to eat here again.<br/><br/>Total came to ~$90. Am incredibly happy with my first time eating Malaysian cuisine!

Best Asian food!. Restoran Malaysian has the best Malaysian food ever. Service is excellent! We love to go there every time!
Elena
Tasty curry chicken. We ordered chicken spring rolls, pad Thai, and curry chicken and roti. we really loved the roti and curry. it had just the right amount of spice and the roti was perfectly flaky. the spring rolls were good too with a nice sauce. we both felt the pad Thai lacked something. not much flavour in this one. great price...three of us ate and our bill was only $26.00.

HORRIBLE SERVICE!!. A few weeks back I went to Restoran Malaysia with my aunt, uncle and brother. I had purchased two groupons, one for my aunt and uncle and one for my parents. I wanted to know if the next time I came, with my parents and brother, we could bring a 4 year old with us making us a group of 5 instead of 4 and if the groupon would still be valid. We were told by the manager, a young asian lady, that if the child is 2 years old that would be okay. It was by chance that when my aunt and uncle arrived they brought their 2 year old son with them making our party 4 plus a 2 year old. <br/> While we were ordering we told the server that we would be using a groupon at that point he asked my aunt how old her son is and she replied that he is 2, he said that's okay and walked away. When the time came to pay we told them we want to use our groupon. They kept making us wait till the manager came and started getting really upset with me that I had mentioned a baby coming next time and there was a baby right now which I explained to her was a coincidence and there shouldn't even be a problem as he is 2 years old. To that she replied that the rule is he should be under 2 years old and "he clearly is not" were her words which I found extremely condescending and rude. The baby barely even ate anything and they created such a large fuss over him. After going back and forth for a while she said well for next time the baby counts as a 5th person. We took this as them being understanding and would let us use the groupon but that was far from it. Again we had to wait a while for the bill and eventually when it came they had charged us the full price for the food (a $110 bill) when we asked them why they had no adjusted it with the groupon the manager came back again and started loosing her temper and was like "I just explained it to you! You can't use the groupon" and when we brought up what she said that for next time he's a 5th person she's like "yeah next time come as only 4 people to use the groupon". <br/> We have been loyal customers of Restoran Malaysia for many years and haven't always been a big fan of their service but this really took the cake. My family and I have been to many restaurants in different parts of the world which are even better than Restoran Malaysia but we have never had to deal with such appalling service. If a manager was behaving like this it just goes to show how this restaurant is being run. The owners need to read these reviews and take it up with their employees or they will have a lot less customers than they were hoping to attract with this groupon.
Lilylee
Not Welcome. We are a family of 5 with two young children and we purchased a Groupon for a 4 person dinner at this restaurant (paid $40 for $80 value of food). When the waitress saw our Group on, she told us that we are not allowed to use it because we have 5 people. She told us unwelcomely to return another time with only 4 people . To try to make everything work out, we even offered to order one more dish for our 5 year old child, but this offer was rejected. <br/><br/>We spoke to the Owner and the Manager and explained that there is no clear restriction that only 4 people are allowed at the table in order to use the Group on. They were concerned that 10 people would show up after buying a 4-person Group on, but we were a family of 5 (with 2 children). The Manager offered 15% off our meal but we could not use the Group on until we returned with only 4 people - so I have to leave my one child or one family member at home next time?! <br/><br/>It was a terrible experience and I don’t understand why they could not be flexible given that the 4th and 5th people in our party of 5 were children, and I couldn't even pay extra for the 5th person. We were extremely disappointed with the service and the lack of consideration for our circumstances. I have experienced first-hand the poor service at this restaurant and can fully support all the other negative comments about the service at this restaurant that have been posted. <br/><br/>I am actually glad that we didn't dine in at this restaurant and will seek a refund for my Group on tomorrow.
Momairalam
Very bad service. Service is very bad. The waiters keep hovering around you to make you leave soon.<br/>Food is expensive too. And not fresh!
Mactone
Bad food, the worst service ever!. My dinner ended up being a very bad experience. The food is not fresh at all. I think they purchased frozen food from T&T and used microwave to heat it. When I told the waiter the fish is not even warm. He told me it always like it with bad attitude. The second dish is not what I ordered. I pointed it out. Guess what, the waiter asked me what I ordered and then this is! (I ordered the chicken but the dish is beef. How come he take beef as chicken???) NEVER GO BACK!!!
Steven
Sounds like their staffs are lacking of training.
Kc Bink
Good Malay food, but. Good food. waiters are very friendly but the owner lady is the pinnacle of rudeness. She refuses to accommodate any requests. In case you have issues...heavens save you.
Hardeep
Sitting here right now and I know thier food is good but the serive staff is very rude and too much in a rusg to listen to our order. Also was told when we ordered a certian dish that we could not returb it. I have never heard of a restaurant take food back first of all but to say that to ur customer as the order is just ridiculous.
Elm
Not baby/kid friendly. The place is noted as kid friendly but the service people were insensitive to the needs of a kid and parents. <br/><br/>A friend was having a party at the restaurant, and though it was a party of 8 including a baby on highchair.. we were given a table of 6. I guess the service staff just didn't think that a baby requires a seat too? In any case, we did bring our own fisher price booster chair as usual... and had put her on the boothside against a wall. Since she took up a seat, we requested an extra chair for the adult to sit on... <br/><br/>The service person took a look at us.. and denied our request and told us that the baby can be put to the middle.. and the adult squeeze to the side along the bench. So, with our big jackets and all, we had 5 people along the bench of 3 tables, plus jackets on the end.. it's no wonder that the lady next to us, very quickly requested a switch of table.. Their plain rejection at this simple request also brought a sour taste to begin with. <br/><br/>Next came another insensitive staff... <br/><br/>Knowing that the restaurant serves mostly spicy food, like curry, or food with contamination of nuts.. since the kitchen serves peanut.. , we brought our only food with us... which just happened to be hotdog. The waiter saw us taking out food for the baby and immediately said, no outside food... and then added no pork... because it's a halal restaurant.... We tried to get the staff to make an exception this time around because it's for the baby, but it was clear that the waiter showed no empathy... and with a party group, we didn't want to make our friends feel uncomfortable either.. <br/><br/>But with this experience, I can only imagine what their reaction will be with a breastfeeding baby or a bottle feeding baby... <br/><br/>Sure the food was tasty.. but with the above said experience and the fact that the waiters gave no words of apology for the inconvenience and showed a lack of understanding in tone and empathy.. and gave no suggestion on what would be suitable for my baby on the menu... well.. I'm certain I'll not be coming to this restaurant again and will certainly ell my friends that this restaurant is not kid or baby friendly. In fact, it's pretty clear the staff that were there that night had no children of their own. .. because yes, it'll be messy with a child, so please don't give such looks of contempt when you see a messier than usual table when you do clean ups.

Best of the best. By far the best resto in toronto... been craving this place since the day i moved away!

Best Malaysian Restaurant in the GTA. If you are Malaysian get in your car and drive to this restaurant.<br/>Not quite as good as Malaysia, but not bad; and it is a heck of a lot closer...
Sally
Fast Service, Great food. They have the best crispy noodles...this place never dissapoints!

Eat there every chance I get. I was introduced to Restoran Malaysia about 6 years ago when it was still a yet to be discovered little hole in the wall. It has since probably tripled in size and I now try to eat there whenever I am in the Markham (Toronto) area. I particularly enjoy going there for group business lunches because we usually order a variety of dishes to share. Amongst my favourites are the Indonesian Nasi Goreng and the Pad Thai. The Nasi Goreng is a rice dish that contains chicken and shrimp (both perfectly cooked), is topped with a fried egg and accompanied by shrimp crackers - very delicious must try at least once. I cannot complain about any of the dishes we ever ordered (spring rolls, satays, curries, rice dishes, pad thai, roti, vegetables, etc). I highly recommend this for a group lunch or dinner especially if you plan to share various dishes.
Yumyum
Love the food, the service can be better. Not so patient. But most of them are good. The food is amazing, my wife and I have been there 4 times with and without friends. Good portions. Mee gory sorry if the spelling is not right but this dish is goood. The curry is good, our friends all like the food there and we also get takeout. <br/><br/>If the service can be better i would give them a full yum yum score, so i will give them an OK score for service but a YUM YUM score for food.<br/><br/>Hope they read this review and work on the service. <br/><br/>Yum Yum

Nasigoring, meegoring, gado gado- all delicious and flavorful, served quickly and priced right. Worth the trip to Richmond Hill. Will definitely be going back.
Kyzr808
Second time visit. Dishes are authetic but seems limited. Felt similar to dining Chinese with Malay flare. The quality of food is very good and the price is a little steep. Portions could be bigger. Variety. Still a nice place to dine and enjoyable. Service is fine. 80%
Amanda
Server argued with me that the Nasi Goring was a "fried rice" when I was sure I've had the noodle variation before. Probably not offered for the lunch menu but all she had to do was explain, as the word "rice" was nowhere to be found in the Nasi Goring description. When I asked if I could switch the order to something else (she just punched it into the computer), she told me she needs to check if the kitchen started making it and if they did, I have to take it. What? Really?<br/><br/>I ended up getting the Penang Rice Noodle... was basically rice noodles stirfried with a few shrimps, beansprouts, and soy sauce. Nothing spectacular.<br/><br/>Then came the bill. Usually servers are flexible but this particular server scolded my friend for not asking for split bill earlier! We didn't even ask for the bill; they just brought it to us. It was a little past 2pm and the floor was NOT busy.<br/><br/>Very disappointed with Restoran Malaysia. There are restaurants around Richmond Hill with much better flavour and service. Never again!
JR
The Pad Thai was very delicious, and the price was great. Diffinitely will come back

Rip Off. The roti canai is a rip off. They literally give you 5 small pieces of meat. The roti itself describes 2 in the menu, but in fact, it is only one but split down the middle. It's very obvious because the the roti is not layered like is supposed to be and one side of the roti is cooked while the other is not (because it is the inside roti piece number 2).
Meiko
Good food, but overpriced. Service good for the most part except one particular waitress, brought us the wrong ice cream with our dessert (ordered coconut, received vanilla),then when we told her she argued with us and insisted she gave us coconut and proceeded to describe the coconut ice cream (which further confirmed that ours wasn't coconut, nevermind that it tasted like vanilla), would not back down, we found this experience irritating so just let it go, but won't be going back.

Great food. Love the pineapple rice and the pad thai! i love the smoothies too!

Great restaurant, the servers get to know you and give you personalized service. Been going here for the longest time (8 years). The owner is from Malaysia and captures the essence of home. I love the Singapore chicken rice and curry laksa (soup bursts with flavor). I also always ask for sangam in the side. Recommend the teh Tarik too! Check out the way they make it frothy - absolute nostalgia.

Pretty good spot. If you've never had Malaysian, try this place, you'll be pleasantly surprised. the prices are good, although the service is "meh"...<br/><br/>i say try this place -- they have a variety of options from meat and fish to vegetarian.
Stephanie Anderson
Great food, huge portions. First time i've ever been and the service wasn't great but the food was very very good. Had the roti & curry beef and that was delicious then had the eggplant cooked in garlic and Indonesian fried rice and low mein the portions was huge and it was very delicious, especiallly the eggplant. Would go back again for sure!
Sarah
Great Food Great Price. I love this restaurant, it has a wide variety of malaysian/ thai food. It is good food at a good price and very large portions (two people can share one meal). On certain days there can be a long wait for a table, but that's due to how great food is. Def worth checking out and worth the wait. 4.5/5

Food is meh... Service is horrible. Servers were rude and just tossed our plates on the tables. No help with the menu as well....

I went with a group of ladies and we had a wonderful time. The food was excellent. The deco was beautiful, modern, high end, classy. There was a free parking lot. The other tables had a variety of ages and cultures. I love the round tables and solid chairs. The staff gave awesome service, and you know how difficult a big table full of ladies can be. The bathrooms were impressive. The music was comfortable. I want to bring my family there soon.
Paul
Love it. Can't get enough of the curry and roti. The service is consistently friendly and helpful; if you are unfamiliar with Malay cuisine they will be happy to help you; they can tone down the spice or make your tongue blilster if you like. Hard to see in corner of lonely strip mall but inside is quite nice - but the great food is primary
Foodfan
My family and I love this restaurant. Both the food and the service are excellent. We have our favourite dishes but have tried most of the dishes. Try the chilli chicken. We're addcted to those flame blistered smokey whole red chillies!

Asian Soul Food. I have travelled to Malaysia myself twice. Once with my wife for our honeymoon where we gained extra pounds on the amazing food in the restaurants and especially on the streets with the Hokker Stalls. My wife is Chinese Malaysian and she has been in Toronto for over 10 years and she STILL tells me how much she misses food in Malaysia and how it is so hard to find an authentic tasting Malaysian restaurant in Toronto. She had been to Matahari downtown and though it was good she simply gave it the label of NON authentic. Lucky for us we were driving by Major Mac and Bayview when we spotted this once small mom and pop size restaurant. Back then they only occupied one unit a small quaint little place with humble beginnings. Ordering our dishes my wife was hopeful yet could not help being a little cautiously skeptical. I believe it was the Fried Keoy Teow a popular street vendor food item consisting of flat rice noodle, sprout, flat fish cake and I think ours came with sliced beef. This is actually a very good dish for beginners and for people who have a low tolerance for spice. Needless to say this dish is familiar but oh so good. I likin it to an asian man's soul food as it hits the spot time and time again. The other Dish we ordered was my wife's ever favourite Mamak Mee Goreng a dish she has high standards for. At first glance it does look sloppy but that is how it is suppose to be. Its a round noodle dish with chopped tomato, chicken and some veggie if I remember correctly. This is one of the spicy dishes but its not off the charts spicy but you can have the level of spice adjusted to your tolerance level. She loves it and when she gets the craving I have to get in the car and pick it up everytime. So the label my wife has given Restoran Malaysia is the most authentic Malaysian restaurant in the GTA that we have eaten at. <br/>Over the years we have tried almost everything on the menu and I love it all. I enjoy their curry dishes immensly. We love the reno that was done years ago as it has become upscale in its appearance. (No problem taking a date here guys) Great for families but the only downside is the inability to make reservations but I understand why and its only fair since there is usually a line up to get in on weekends and weeknights. That alone should tell you how great this place is. Now the real test for me when deciding if I will even walk into a restaurant. Are there any Chinese people in this Chinese restaurant, any Indian people eatting in this Indian restaurant and so forth. If their own is eatting there then its good enough for me to try. If you're on a budget you probably don't want to frequent this place all the time but going here for every special occasion...I would do. Couple places to try if on a budget is in the food court at First Markham Place, Woodbine and Hwy 7. There is one place in Scarborough near off of Finch going east somewhere past Kennedy I think. I totally forgot where it is but its TINY and its beside a Car repair garage. Too bad I forgot the name but I will give it an honourable mention for low price and authenticity. <br/>Restoran Malaysia, a place we will frequent as long as it is standing and providing the great service and food it always has. FYI they have opened a 2nd restaurant somewhere on hwy 7. Have yet to try but I'm sure its just as great. I hope someone finds this useful as I enjoy being long winded. Try the Teh Tarik and watch them "pull" this sweet cold drink. If you enjoy it you can buy the powder at a some Chinese supermarkets like the one on Bayview south of Rutherford.

Great food BUT horrible service. Had to wait for 30 minutes for a table. Then had to wait for 20 minutes for a waiter to take our drinks order. Also no booze.

Second time around and it was better than the first. Roti was superb although a tad pricy. Other comments about dry green curry are accurate however this was the only disappointment. Four people had appetizers, main course and dessert for less than $80, and it was a great atmosphere too.

Service was ok, but the food was mehhhh..... We ordered the beef green curry, and it was DRRRRYYYY and super tough to chew!

Not good. Went with my family , service was very bad and omg food was very very bad . to some people who thinks that great portion, makes good food ,please look agian. To me that cheap they just wants to feed their whole family for $5 bucks. Toronto star I am with you.

Flavor explosion is like a party in your mouth. Toronto Star reviewer probably got a toned-down version served by default to white people. This restaurant has some of the most amazing flavours. I highly recommend the lemongrass beef. If you are Malaysian (or used to very spicy food) you can ask for the "normal" - non watered down versions, or the extra spicy versions.<br/><br/>The food is awesome, the service is awesome, I can't recommend this place enough. It's just a shame that it's so far outside of the city, so that urban downtowners can't get up there as often as they'd like.

The Toronto star review should be removed from this profile, everything about that restaurant indicates no less than a 4.5/5 or perhaps 5/5. I have dined there a total of 17 times and the food is incredible with great portions, service is slow on Friday and Saturday (highly expected), and the bill at the end of the evening leaves you thinking "I won!"

A little further north of the city – if you’re willing to make the trek up to Major Mackenzie Drive in Richmond Hill – is a pretty good restaurant for anyone craving a rich, spicy blend of Thai-Malaysian food. Restoran Malaysia serves up delicious “authentic” Malaysian dishes at very affordable prices.

We shared one of my favourite type of soups, a Thai-style sour and spicy tom yam with seafood. I really enjoyed this! The broth was a lot more tomato-y than I was expecting, but it was delicious. Would have definitely loved to have more of this. Our server brought us an extra bowl to share the soup.

The homemade roti canai and curry mutton was absolutely amazing. I couldn’t believe how soft and well-made the roti was. You always have to eat roti when it’s steaming hot and fresh, and the roti here sure didn’t disappoint! The curry mutton was also amazing.

A friend brought me here for my birthday a month ago. It was my first time eating at a Malaysian restaurant and DAMNNN the food was good. Gotta go back again. They’ve got a ton of dishes to choose from, and will make your dish as spicy as you want it. And from the four dishes we ordered, everything was well seasoned and spiced, with deep flavours. Mamak Mee Goring :  Miki noodles stir fried with tomatoes, egg, shrimp, chicken, bean sprout and other veggies.

The interior of the restaurant featured beautiful dark wood in both their furniture and decor. There were many rectangular tables that could easily be rearranged to fit parties of all sizes. Colourful paintings were on display between the wood cabinets that lined the walls in the dining area. The space felt warm and also refined. Service on our visit was fairly standard. Each dish came out quickly and arrived with serving utensils. We ordered the Singapore Laksa, a lamb curry, fish penang curry, basil eggplant with chicken, pad thai and a side of roti.
Gastro World
In the mood for more spice, we ordered the chicken red curry ($12) with a side of steamed rice ($1.50) and two roti ($4). When you come here you have to order the roti! These thin, chewy, toasted sheets of slightly sweet home made roti are served warm and are perfect for dipping into Restoran Malaysia’s curries. I love them so much I frankly could wrap noodles in there and still eat them. At $2 a sheet you can order as many as you want for the table - I find one per person is usually enough if you also have other carbs.

A restaurant in Toronto specializing only in serving authentic Malaysian food sounded interesting. The service was great, we’ll be back to try more dishes on the menu.

Last Friday, my husband and I decided we wanted to eat dinner at Restoran Malaysia in Richmond Hill. When I told my mother we were going for Malaysian, she asked me to specify what kind of food it was. “Erm, it’s a little like Indian, but then some dishes are a little Chinese, maybe a little Thai, but different …” “… What” Her question and my lack of expertise in Malaysian cuisine (hey – they don’t feature it on MasterChef) had me quickly looking it up on the Internet with hopes of wowing my husband that evening at dinner. Well, unsurprisingly, I was right! Malaysian cuisine is actually influenced by various other cuisines from all around the world, and mostly by their surrounding countries such as China, Thailand and India. So with that in mind, I was really excited to re-experience Malaysian food at Restoran Malaysia and try to figure out which cuisine influenced each dish. Because Restoran Malaysia doesn’t take reservations, we tried to give ourselves ample time to get there, wait f

The menu was kind of confusing because many of the dishes were in Malaysian, but luckily Adrienne and Horace have been there before so they took charge of ordering. The rest of us just focused on what dessert and drinks we wanted : )  Here's all that we ordered!! Quite a lot! I can't rememb

When I first discovered Restoran Malaysia, it was half of the size it is now and was  always packed but they expanded and renovated, no wait time anymore! The menu consists of a mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian cuisines but all done very well. <br/>My go-to restaurant for great Malaysian food!

I really enjoyed my meal at Restoran Malaysia, they offer authentic Malaysian flavors in a clean restaurant with awesome service.

Being a fan of Malaysian food, it’s a little unfortunate that there aren’t very many Malaysian restaurants downtown. Having heard great things about Restoran Malaysia in Richmond Hill, I finally made the trek up north to satisfy my craving.

roti was sweet and paired perfectly well with the juicy tender beef. I would have loved to order another plate of this tasty dish.
Shawn
I liked the roti telor's fluffiness and the moderately spicy curry beef. Beef was tender.
The Urban Craze
I had this odd craving for curry. I think I must have been Southeast Asian in my past lifetime as I have these cravings quite often. I had mention this to my cousin; and her being quite knowledgeable in Southeast Asian restaurants she mentioned I should try out this well established place up in Markham called Restoran Malaysia that some pretty good curry as well as other dishes.

Restoran Malaysia is my go-to place for delicious, reliable Southeastern Asian Cuisine! So I paid a visit with my family on the night before my trip to Asia. I come here on a regular basis, so I'll let the pictures do most of the talking. The first is Roti Telor and Curry Chicken : stuffed roti with eggs, chopped onion and sliced chili. Although on paper, it seems like a winning combination, I actually prefer just to plain roti to accompany the curry. Rendang Minang- Daging (Beef): cooked slowly over low fire in a sauce of coconut, galangal, lemongrass, tumeric and numerous spices till tender. The meat is so tender that it disintegrates at the touch of a fork. The intense flavour of the sauce is perfect with rice or roti. Restoran Malaysia's version of the Pad Thai -- Stir fried noodle with egg, shrimp, chicken and vegetables with tangy sweet sauce, topped with crush peanuts and coriander--is my absolute favourite. I usually don't like to eat too much noodles in one meal because it's to

Nelson: I always enjoy coming here because the food is good and it's not pricey. It can really mix things up cuisine-wise if you are in a rut. It's Asian food, but slightly different from your regular Chinese/Japanese/Korean/Viet/Thai.<br/><br/>Roti ($2) with Curry Sauce ($3). Never having ordered this before, the Roti was surprisingly good because it was so very soft and tender. Then when paired with the curry sauce, it was really good.<br/><br/>Penang Fried Kuay Teow ($7.5): Wok fried fresh flat noodles with dark soy sauce, shrimp, egg, sprout, chives and chili sauce. This dish was only soso.<br/><br/>Pad Thai ($8): Stir fried rice noodle in a sweet tangy sauce with sweet peppers, tofu, shrimp, chicken, beansprouts and egg. Topped with chopped peanuts. This was decent and better than the last dish. Not their specialty though.<br/><br/>Singapore Chicken Rice ($7.5): Steamed boneless chicken leg served with cucumber, lettuce, tomatoes and chili sauce on the side. Served with rice cooked in chicken broth. Chic

I'm so happy we found this place! Everything I've had so far was delicious. The rice and noodles are very generously portioned. The meats taste so good you wish the portions were a bit bigger. There is usually atleast a 20 min wait for a table on weekends so make reservations if you can.... I never remember to lol. The decor is nice and the service very good!

I've been frequenting this restaurant for over a decade! Every visit I have is a very enjoyable time. It is a bit of a trek to get here but it's a place worthy of visiting for some comfort food. Many of their dishes are tasty but their roti is simply to die for. Wonderful top notch service. This place is a hidden gem and a must visit in my opinion. It's cosy atmosphere and delicious dishes with great flavour make for a fantastic outing with friends or family.

We had a group birthday dinner here for my wife's birthday.  They claim to not take reservations and it is cash only.  We were told to come around 6pm to accommodate our group of 8 to avoid long waits.  This was correct as it was fairly empty when we arrived.  They tried to seat us in a busy area and we asked to be moved to a quieter/roomier area of the restaurant but they didnt want to initially as they said it was "reserved".  Of course we had to call them on that as they repeatedly told us no reservations on the phone.  Anyway after a minor debate we did get seated where we wanted.<br/><br/>The night thereafter was smooth and all the dishes we ordered were fantastic.  Some asian places get the cheapest ingredients and fry with the most oil but this place was different.  Everything was fresh, not too oily.  All the dishes were bursting with flavor you will need rice and/or roti to absorb it all up.  We ordered<br/><br/>1. Appetizer/Sampler Platter<br/>2. Pineapple/Sweet and Sour White Chicken (everyone's fave - trust me this wasnt the american style sweet and sour chicken for non asians)<br/>3. Red Curry Chicken<br/>4. Tamarind Fish<br/>5. Pad Thai<br/>6. Mee Goreng (noodle dish)<br/>7. Spicy Sembal Chicken<br/>8. Chicken curry with roti<br/><br/>This easily fed our people and we had left over to spare.<br/><br/>Overall I have to say this place is really awesome and worth the drive up North.  My only knock on this place is no reservation, cash only and no alcohol.  But the food more than makes up for it.

I love this restaurant. The restaurant is nice with dim lights. The servers are welcoming and pretty quick.<br/><br/>My favourite thing here is the Roti Canai with Chicken Curry. The Roti Canai is amazingly soft and delicious, and the chicken curry is simple but excellent. I've been to Malaysia and tried Roti Canai at several restaurants there, and I still think this restaurant makes a better version. <br/><br/>The Nasi Goring and Chilli Chicken are also very good. The Mango-Lychee Freezie drink is a family favourite as well. <br/><br/>With excellent food, service, and prices, what's not to love?  I highly recommend Restoran Malaysia.

Kevin and I had dinner at Restoran Malaysia (815 Major Mackenzie Drive East), a popular restaurant in Richmond Hill known for its mix of Asian culinary dishes. The restaurant is located on the southeast corner of Bayview and Major Mackenzie. It was my first time here though Kevin was already a fan of the place, particularly of their curry dishes. It was a Friday night around 7:30pm, but somehow even busier than I was expecting it to be for a place in Richmond Hill!<br/><br/>We were seated after maybe about half an hour, which felt longer since we were already so hungry. Even though it was super busy, our server was very friendly and attentive. We noticed in general that their team was very efficient in attending to all their guests and cleaning up for the next ones to get seated right away, too.<br/><br/>TOM YAM SEAFOOD<br/><br/>shrimp-calamari-scallop-lemon grass-spices-tomato-mushroom-lemon leaf-coriander<br/><br/>$6.50<br/><br/>We shared one of my favourite type of soups, a Thai-style sour and spicy tom yam with seafood. There’s actually a lot of black glutinous rice pudding under all of that cream!<br/><br/>I love this restaurant! The food, service, and atmosphere were fantastic. I thought the prices were great for the quality and amount of food served to us, and it wasn’t a long wait for our food after we were seated and had ordered. Though it got a lot less busier and crowded, there was still a line up after we left sometime after 9pm. I would definitely come here again in Richmond Hill, and try one of their drinks to go with dinner!

This is one of the most authentic Malaysian cuisines in the Greater Toronto Area. Definitely suggest to order the chicken curry which is rich in flavours and having brought some of my Malaysian and Singaporean friends and they have deemed it authentic with their stamp of approval. Order the chicken curry with roti prata and roti prata with egg which is a South-Indian pancake that is crisp on the outside. Additionally, the Hainanese Chicken Rice and the Chicken satay are always good bets too!

I wanted to keep my birthday as simple as possible. No fuss; no muss. I was quite specific about this. My wife obliged by taking me to Restoran Malaysia… exactly what I wanted. Now, since I started this blog, one of the most memorable things I have eaten is Rendang Beef… enjoyed at an Indonesian restaurant in De Pijp, Amsterdam, called Sari Citra. I have been trying to recreate this meal ever since. Lured by the possibility of eating this elusive dish once again, we headed up the 404 to Richmond Hill in the hopes of arriving for lunch before our baby daughter fell asleep in the car.Success! Molly is awake and ready for lunch… as are we.<br/><br/> The staff greet us with smiles and seat us at a large table that comfortably accommodates both our stroller and the massive spread of dishes we’re about to order. We start with a delicious Red Curry Chicken that’s filled with generous pieces of White Meat, Cilantro and Red Peppers. The best part is that it comes with both rice & roti, which basically turns everything into a wrap. Amazing!Next up: Nasi Goreng. Think Indonesian Fried Rice that’s full of Shrimps, Chicken and Mixed Vegetables (of the frozen variety), topped with a Fried Egg. Served with Shrimp Chips for scooping, this is a great dish for sharing; perfect for adding a little starch to your plate. My wife is in the mood for noodles. <br/><br/>The house recommends the Penang Char Kuay Teow which is a wok-fried mélange of Flat Rice Noodles with Egg, Shrimp, Bean Sprouts and Chives, tossed in Soy Sauce. And then, finally, there’s the Rendang Beef. This dish is far too complicated to try at home (imo). It can perhaps best be described as stewing beef cured with ginger, chili, galangal, lemon grass, turmeric, garlic and shallots. Restoran Malaysia’s take on it is far less saucy than other variations I’ve tried in North America. More like a dry rub. Certainly the closest yet to Sari Citra’s rendition… with the added pleasure of a roti accompaniment.Restoran Malaysia’s dining room is quite expansive and is packed full of families during our Sunday lunch visit. Check it out the next time you’re north of the city and maybe you’ll spot the Toronto Food Blog in action. As you can see above (my birthday was in Movember), I’m quite a happy camper. <br/><br/>Lunch with my two favourite ladies and a large serving of Rendang Beef. Happy Birthday to me!
