Restoran Malaysia was bigger and fancier than we thought it would be. We have passed it many times, but this time we went in for lunch. The murals, the artwork, the fish tanks, and the tasteful decor added to the ambiance, and there was spacious seating for at least 100 split in two dining areas. Although the restaurant was less than half full at lunchtime, there were still quite a few diners.
We stayed with the lunch menu, where all 10 items were under $10. The main menu had dishes that were mostly $16 and higher.
SWMBO had the Pad Thai ($9), which came with chicken and shrimp. Sweet, sour, tasty. The portion was large enough that she took some home.
I chose the Malay Curry Chicken ($8.5). Thin slices of white meat cooked in a Malay Curry sauce. Enough heat to bring a mild sweat to my brow, but not too much.
Service was fast and friendly.
This is a popular malaysia restaurant up in Richmond Hill. It was so popular that the owners updated the space and interiors. Unfortunately, the menu prices did increase; however, the food still taste great! I tried the pad thai yesterday and was great. They have this special drink called Iced Teh Tarik. It is pricy (4 bucks) but is a specialize milk tea drink that is cooled by constant pouring of the drink from tall heights.Note: I got lazy these days and haven't brought my camera with me. All pictures in this blurb are from the net.The singapore laksa is amazing and still the best one in Toronto.
"Ok place but little parking and a premium price"
Was looking for something completely different. My friends recommended Malaysia. So we all made the trek up to Richmond hill to check this place out.
First thing, the parking lot is ridiculously small. It took me a good half hour hunting around for a space. The fact a McDonalds drive thru cuts into parts of the lot doesn't help.
The place was packed; we were finally seat after a 30 minute wait. The wait staff were friendly and helpful. We didn't know quite what to order. We started off with the mango salad. We went with the daily fish special (sea bass), okra, another veggie dish that I can't pronounce, yellow curry, some beef and lamb skewers, and some fried rice.
The mango salad was ok; not sweet, far too sour for my liking; the fish sauce was also over powering. Disappointing.
The yellow curry was really good. We ordered roti to go along with it. A nice combination.
The beef and lamb skewers were very flavorful. The meat did not have the gaminess of the lamb. They were moist and not over cooked. Nice.
The sea bass was the most expensive dish. The fish was fairly small but cooked just right. No fishy smell or taste but the sauce was too much; could only taste sauce. That was too bad.
The veggie dishes were good. Nicely cooked and crunchy without being too raw and seasoned nicely. These were my favorite.
The fried rice finally came. The fried rice looked like it was good. it seemed too "wet"; sort of trying to fry rice with freshly steamed rice. There wasn't much flavor; very bland.
The fried rice was most disappointing.
Overall the meal wasn't anything special. It seemed like any regular Chinese restaurant. But with a premium price.
The restaurant is worth a try but I definitely won't be a regular there.
Restoran Malaysia is one of the more popular Malaysian restaurants in the GTA. The malaysian restaurant is found in this small plaza and is rather nice on the interior. Looked to be a nice place for a date or a large group of friends. The menu had so many great looking things (and tough to pronounce as well…) and the prices with the portions were fair as well.
We discovered a couple of dishes which we know will become staples! For DD#2, who is not fond of spicy food, we got some Malay Fried Chicken (Ayam Goring Kampung). Served with shrimp crackers, these boneless delights were crispy and so tasty!
Obviously, we had to try their Singapore Laksa, a popular spicy noodle soup. The Miki noodle was nicely cooked and immersed in a delicious curry broth. The bowl was packed with chicken, tofu, fish cake and shrimp with some bean sprouts. Hits the spot! It was the right amount of heat with the slightest amount of sweet.
They also have Thai offerings. We ordered Pineapple Fried Rice but we all preferred the one at Thai Basil right across the street! Same with the Tom Yum soup. Well, that should teach us a lesson eh? Why order Thai in a Singaporean resto, duh?
Service was also great! The host and servers were all smiles despite the busy hour and our orders came out at a reasonable amount of time. Prices were also not too bad at about $10 or so per dish. Definitely worth it.
Nice job bro... I like your web style. The picture are awesome to. Fell very hungry now.
I'm new in blogging, If you don't mind please review my blog and I like to here comment from you. Just search 'universalrestaurant77' at Blogspot.
Awesome quality food for good prices! Recommend the Pineapple Fried Rice & Red Curry Chicken! Always good! They only accept cash so be prepared!
Great food, good service, and good ambiance. They do not serve alcohol, but their tropical drinks are all excellent. Take out is available. Our usual dishes are green fish curry (highly recommended), pad Thai, nasi goreng (fried rice), and Tom yum soup. The eggplant dish is my favorite too. Everything is tasty!
The other night, I was taken here by a friend who lives in the area. I had actually heard a lot about this place so I was excited to try it. It was very busy which is always a good sign.
They only accept cash, so I waited at our table while my friend went across the street to the bank. There was a family with small children on very loud phones and tablets sitting next to us and honestly, I had never needed a drink so badly. They don't serve alcohol but thankfully our lovely server moved us to a quieter table.
For our appetizers we ordered chicken/beef satay skewers which came with the peanut sauce on the side. I don't eat beef but according to my friend they were good, as were my chicken satay (white meat). Then we ordered pineapple fried rice, red chicken curry and pad thai. Everything was really yummy. The plates were so big we had to take the rest home. Sadly, didn't have room for dessert so I will have to come back for sure.
Living literally five minutes away from the restaurant and also as a quite well known local restaurant, I have never tried it anytime in my life until my friends showed some interest and requested a gathering there. It is quite shameful actually. Because my family do not like eating anything aside from Chinese food, I never had the opportunity to eat other cuisines until I was in university or started working.
Great Food and Cheap!!!. I had the chicken curry with roti and pad thai which came to 20 bucks. Best 20 I've spent in a long time. Food was awesome!
Delicious. We went for lunch and it was amazing. Service and first experience here, a bit far but well worth it. It was not that busy so they really were on point with service. Try their roti and beef curry. Sooooo yummy! And their pat thai is pretty awesome.
Great Laksa. Singapore Laksa is the only thing that I come for! Never had one this good. I've also tried pad thai here but wasn't as impressed.
Great Food. Great food and friendly service. I like the Pad Thai and the Cashew Beef.
Simply amazing!. Went here for an early Mother's Day dinner with a party of 5. The service was great! The waiters were really patient and helpful, they never once bothered us when we waited for the entire party to arrive and came right away when called for.
We ordered pad thai, pineapple rice, red curry, lots of roti, and the mixed chicken beef skewers. This filled us all up and we still had leftovers to pack. It was all super delicious (especially the roti) and I definitely plan to eat here again.
Total came to ~$90. Am incredibly happy with my first time eating Malaysian cuisine!
The best restaurant in York Region. Food is always fresh & delicious. Service is always good. Nice decor.
Highly recommend :)

Best of the best. By far the best resto in toronto... been craving this place since the day i moved away!
Best Malaysian Restaurant in the GTA. If you are Malaysian get in your car and drive to this restaurant.
Not quite as good as Malaysia, but not bad; and it is a heck of a lot closer...
Fast Service, Great food. They have the best crispy noodles...this place never dissapoints!
Love the food, the service can be better. Not so patient. But most of them are good. The food is amazing, my wife and I have been there 4 times with and without friends. Good portions. Mee gory sorry if the spelling is not right but this dish is goood. The curry is good, our friends all like the food there and we also get takeout.
If the service can be better i would give them a full yum yum score, so i will give them an OK score for service but a YUM YUM score for food.
Hope they read this review and work on the service.
Yum Yum
Nasigoring, meegoring, gado gado- all delicious and flavorful, served quickly and priced right. Worth the trip to Richmond Hill. Will definitely be going back.
Second time visit. Dishes are authetic but seems limited. Felt similar to dining Chinese with Malay flare. The quality of food is very good and the price is a little steep. Portions could be bigger. Variety. Still a nice place to dine and enjoyable. Service is fine. 80%
The Pad Thai was very delicious, and the price was great. Diffinitely will come back
Great food. Love the pineapple rice and the pad thai! i love the smoothies too!
Great restaurant, the servers get to know you and give you personalized service. Been going here for the longest time (8 years). The owner is from Malaysia and captures the essence of home. I love the Singapore chicken rice and curry laksa (soup bursts with flavor). I also always ask for sangam in the side. Recommend the teh Tarik too! Check out the way they make it frothy - absolute nostalgia.
Pretty good spot. If you've never had Malaysian, try this place, you'll be pleasantly surprised. the prices are good, although the service is "meh"...
i say try this place -- they have a variety of options from meat and fish to vegetarian.
Great food, huge portions. First time i've ever been and the service wasn't great but the food was very very good. Had the roti & curry beef and that was delicious then had the eggplant cooked in garlic and Indonesian fried rice and low mein the portions was huge and it was very delicious, especiallly the eggplant. Would go back again for sure!
Great Food Great Price. I love this restaurant, it has a wide variety of malaysian/ thai food. It is good food at a good price and very large portions (two people can share one meal). On certain days there can be a long wait for a table, but that's due to how great food is. Def worth checking out and worth the wait. 4.5/5

I went with a group of ladies and we had a wonderful time. The food was excellent. The deco was beautiful, modern, high end, classy. There was a free parking lot. The other tables had a variety of ages and cultures. I love the round tables and solid chairs. The staff gave awesome service, and you know how difficult a big table full of ladies can be. The bathrooms were impressive. The music was comfortable. I want to bring my family there soon.
Love it. Can't get enough of the curry and roti. The service is consistently friendly and helpful; if you are unfamiliar with Malay cuisine they will be happy to help you; they can tone down the spice or make your tongue blilster if you like. Hard to see in corner of lonely strip mall but inside is quite nice - but the great food is primary
My family and I love this restaurant. Both the food and the service are excellent. We have our favourite dishes but have tried most of the dishes. Try the chilli chicken. We're addcted to those flame blistered smokey whole red chillies!
Asian Soul Food. I have travelled to Malaysia myself twice. Once with my wife for our honeymoon where we gained extra pounds on the amazing food in the restaurants and especially on the streets with the Hokker Stalls. My wife is Chinese Malaysian and she has been in Toronto for over 10 years and she STILL tells me how much she misses food in Malaysia and how it is so hard to find an authentic tasting Malaysian restaurant in Toronto. She had been to Matahari downtown and though it was good she simply gave it the label of NON authentic. Lucky for us we were driving by Major Mac and Bayview when we spotted this once small mom and pop size restaurant. Back then they only occupied one unit a small quaint little place with humble beginnings. Ordering our dishes my wife was hopeful yet could not help being a little cautiously skeptical. I believe it was the Fried Keoy Teow a popular street vendor food item consisting of flat rice noodle, sprout, flat fish cake and I think ours came with sliced beef. This is actually a very good dish for beginners and for people who have a low tolerance for spice. Needless to say this dish is familiar but oh so good. I likin it to an asian man's soul food as it hits the spot time and time again. The other Dish we ordered was my wife's ever favourite Mamak Mee Goreng a dish she has high standards for. At first glance it does look sloppy but that is how it is suppose to be. Its a round noodle dish with chopped tomato, chicken and some veggie if I remember correctly. This is one of the spicy dishes but its not off the charts spicy but you can have the level of spice adjusted to your tolerance level. She loves it and when she gets the craving I have to get in the car and pick it up everytime. So the label my wife has given Restoran Malaysia is the most authentic Malaysian restaurant in the GTA that we have eaten at.
Over the years we have tried almost everything on the menu and I love it all. I enjoy their curry dishes immensly. We love the reno that was done years ago as it has become upscale in its appearance. (No problem taking a date here guys) Great for families but the only downside is the inability to make reservations but I understand why and its only fair since there is usually a line up to get in on weekends and weeknights. That alone should tell you how great this place is. Now the real test for me when deciding if I will even walk into a restaurant. Are there any Chinese people in this Chinese restaurant, any Indian people eatting in this Indian restaurant and so forth. If their own is eatting there then its good enough for me to try. If you're on a budget you probably don't want to frequent this place all the time but going here for every special occasion...I would do. Couple places to try if on a budget is in the food court at First Markham Place, Woodbine and Hwy 7. There is one place in Scarborough near off of Finch going east somewhere past Kennedy I think. I totally forgot where it is but its TINY and its beside a Car repair garage. Too bad I forgot the name but I will give it an honourable mention for low price and authenticity.
Restoran Malaysia, a place we will frequent as long as it is standing and providing the great service and food it always has. FYI they have opened a 2nd restaurant somewhere on hwy 7. Have yet to try but I'm sure its just as great. I hope someone finds this useful as I enjoy being long winded. Try the Teh Tarik and watch them "pull" this sweet cold drink. If you enjoy it you can buy the powder at a some Chinese supermarkets like the one on Bayview south of Rutherford.
Second time around and it was better than the first. Roti was superb although a tad pricy. Other comments about dry green curry are accurate however this was the only disappointment. Four people had appetizers, main course and dessert for less than $80, and it was a great atmosphere too.
Flavor explosion is like a party in your mouth. Toronto Star reviewer probably got a toned-down version served by default to white people. This restaurant has some of the most amazing flavours. I highly recommend the lemongrass beef. If you are Malaysian (or used to very spicy food) you can ask for the "normal" - non watered down versions, or the extra spicy versions.
The food is awesome, the service is awesome, I can't recommend this place enough. It's just a shame that it's so far outside of the city, so that urban downtowners can't get up there as often as they'd like.
The Toronto star review should be removed from this profile, everything about that restaurant indicates no less than a 4.5/5 or perhaps 5/5. I have dined there a total of 17 times and the food is incredible with great portions, service is slow on Friday and Saturday (highly expected), and the bill at the end of the evening leaves you thinking "I won!"
A little further north of the city – if you’re willing to make the trek up to Major Mackenzie Drive in Richmond Hill – is a pretty good restaurant for anyone craving a rich, spicy blend of Thai-Malaysian food. Restoran Malaysia serves up delicious “authentic” Malaysian dishes at very affordable prices.
We shared one of my favourite type of soups, a Thai-style sour and spicy tom yam with seafood. I really enjoyed this! The broth was a lot more tomato-y than I was expecting, but it was delicious. Would have definitely loved to have more of this. Our server brought us an extra bowl to share the soup.
The homemade roti canai and curry mutton was absolutely amazing. I couldn’t believe how soft and well-made the roti was. You always have to eat roti when it’s steaming hot and fresh, and the roti here sure didn’t disappoint! The curry mutton was also amazing.
A friend brought me here for my birthday a month ago. It was my first time eating at a Malaysian restaurant and DAMNNN the food was good. Gotta go back again. They’ve got a ton of dishes to choose from, and will make your dish as spicy as you want it. And from the four dishes we ordered, everything was well seasoned and spiced, with deep flavours. Mamak Mee Goring : Miki noodles stir fried with tomatoes, egg, shrimp, chicken, bean sprout and other veggies.
The interior of the restaurant featured beautiful dark wood in both their furniture and decor. There were many rectangular tables that could easily be rearranged to fit parties of all sizes. Colourful paintings were on display between the wood cabinets that lined the walls in the dining area. The space felt warm and also refined. Service on our visit was fairly standard. Each dish came out quickly and arrived with serving utensils. We ordered the Singapore Laksa, a lamb curry, fish penang curry, basil eggplant with chicken, pad thai and a side of roti.
In the mood for more spice, we ordered the chicken red curry ($12) with a side of steamed rice ($1.50) and two roti ($4). When you come here you have to order the roti! These thin, chewy, toasted sheets of slightly sweet home made roti are served warm and are perfect for dipping into Restoran Malaysia’s curries. I love them so much I frankly could wrap noodles in there and still eat them. At $2 a sheet you can order as many as you want for the table - I find one per person is usually enough if you also have other carbs.
A restaurant in Toronto specializing only in serving authentic Malaysian food sounded interesting. The service was great, we’ll be back to try more dishes on the menu.
Last Friday, my husband and I decided we wanted to eat dinner at Restoran Malaysia in Richmond Hill. When I told my mother we were going for Malaysian, she asked me to specify what kind of food it was. “Erm, it’s a little like Indian, but then some dishes are a little Chinese, maybe a little Thai, but different …” “… What” Her question and my lack of expertise in Malaysian cuisine (hey – they don’t feature it on MasterChef) had me quickly looking it up on the Internet with hopes of wowing my husband that evening at dinner. Well, unsurprisingly, I was right! Malaysian cuisine is actually influenced by various other cuisines from all around the world, and mostly by their surrounding countries such as China, Thailand and India. So with that in mind, I was really excited to re-experience Malaysian food at Restoran Malaysia and try to figure out which cuisine influenced each dish. Because Restoran Malaysia doesn’t take reservations, we tried to give ourselves ample time to get there, wait f
The menu was kind of confusing because many of the dishes were in Malaysian, but luckily Adrienne and Horace have been there before so they took charge of ordering. The rest of us just focused on what dessert and drinks we wanted : ) Here's all that we ordered!! Quite a lot! I can't rememb
When I first discovered Restoran Malaysia, it was half of the size it is now and was always packed but they expanded and renovated, no wait time anymore! The menu consists of a mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian cuisines but all done very well.
My go-to restaurant for great Malaysian food!
roti was sweet and paired perfectly well with the juicy tender beef. I would have loved to order another plate of this tasty dish.
I liked the roti telor's fluffiness and the moderately spicy curry beef. Beef was tender.
Restoran Malaysia is my go-to place for delicious, reliable Southeastern Asian Cuisine! So I paid a visit with my family on the night before my trip to Asia. I come here on a regular basis, so I'll let the pictures do most of the talking. The first is Roti Telor and Curry Chicken : stuffed roti with eggs, chopped onion and sliced chili. Although on paper, it seems like a winning combination, I actually prefer just to plain roti to accompany the curry. Rendang Minang- Daging (Beef): cooked slowly over low fire in a sauce of coconut, galangal, lemongrass, tumeric and numerous spices till tender. The meat is so tender that it disintegrates at the touch of a fork. The intense flavour of the sauce is perfect with rice or roti. Restoran Malaysia's version of the Pad Thai -- Stir fried noodle with egg, shrimp, chicken and vegetables with tangy sweet sauce, topped with crush peanuts and coriander--is my absolute favourite. I usually don't like to eat too much noodles in one meal because it's to
Nelson: I always enjoy coming here because the food is good and it's not pricey. It can really mix things up cuisine-wise if you are in a rut. It's Asian food, but slightly different from your regular Chinese/Japanese/Korean/Viet/Thai.
Roti ($2) with Curry Sauce ($3). Never having ordered this before, the Roti was surprisingly good because it was so very soft and tender. Then when paired with the curry sauce, it was really good.
Penang Fried Kuay Teow ($7.5): Wok fried fresh flat noodles with dark soy sauce, shrimp, egg, sprout, chives and chili sauce. This dish was only soso.
Pad Thai ($8): Stir fried rice noodle in a sweet tangy sauce with sweet peppers, tofu, shrimp, chicken, beansprouts and egg. Topped with chopped peanuts. This was decent and better than the last dish. Not their specialty though.
Singapore Chicken Rice ($7.5): Steamed boneless chicken leg served with cucumber, lettuce, tomatoes and chili sauce on the side. Served with rice cooked in chicken broth. Chic
I'm so happy we found this place! Everything I've had so far was delicious. The rice and noodles are very generously portioned. The meats taste so good you wish the portions were a bit bigger. There is usually atleast a 20 min wait for a table on weekends so make reservations if you can.... I never remember to lol. The decor is nice and the service very good!
I've been frequenting this restaurant for over a decade! Every visit I have is a very enjoyable time. It is a bit of a trek to get here but it's a place worthy of visiting for some comfort food. Many of their dishes are tasty but their roti is simply to die for. Wonderful top notch service. This place is a hidden gem and a must visit in my opinion. It's cosy atmosphere and delicious dishes with great flavour make for a fantastic outing with friends or family.
We had a group birthday dinner here for my wife's birthday. They claim to not take reservations and it is cash only. We were told to come around 6pm to accommodate our group of 8 to avoid long waits. This was correct as it was fairly empty when we arrived. They tried to seat us in a busy area and we asked to be moved to a quieter/roomier area of the restaurant but they didnt want to initially as they said it was "reserved". Of course we had to call them on that as they repeatedly told us no reservations on the phone. Anyway after a minor debate we did get seated where we wanted.
The night thereafter was smooth and all the dishes we ordered were fantastic. Some asian places get the cheapest ingredients and fry with the most oil but this place was different. Everything was fresh, not too oily. All the dishes were bursting with flavor you will need rice and/or roti to absorb it all up. We ordered
1. Appetizer/Sampler Platter
2. Pineapple/Sweet and Sour White Chicken (everyone's fave - trust me this wasnt the american style sweet and sour chicken for non asians)
3. Red Curry Chicken
4. Tamarind Fish
5. Pad Thai
6. Mee Goreng (noodle dish)
7. Spicy Sembal Chicken
8. Chicken curry with roti
This easily fed our people and we had left over to spare.
Overall I have to say this place is really awesome and worth the drive up North. My only knock on this place is no reservation, cash only and no alcohol. But the food more than makes up for it.
I love this restaurant. The restaurant is nice with dim lights. The servers are welcoming and pretty quick.
My favourite thing here is the Roti Canai with Chicken Curry. The Roti Canai is amazingly soft and delicious, and the chicken curry is simple but excellent. I've been to Malaysia and tried Roti Canai at several restaurants there, and I still think this restaurant makes a better version.
The Nasi Goring and Chilli Chicken are also very good. The Mango-Lychee Freezie drink is a family favourite as well.
With excellent food, service, and prices, what's not to love? I highly recommend Restoran Malaysia.
Kevin and I had dinner at Restoran Malaysia (815 Major Mackenzie Drive East), a popular restaurant in Richmond Hill known for its mix of Asian culinary dishes. The restaurant is located on the southeast corner of Bayview and Major Mackenzie. It was my first time here though Kevin was already a fan of the place, particularly of their curry dishes. It was a Friday night around 7:30pm, but somehow even busier than I was expecting it to be for a place in Richmond Hill!
We were seated after maybe about half an hour, which felt longer since we were already so hungry. Even though it was super busy, our server was very friendly and attentive. We noticed in general that their team was very efficient in attending to all their guests and cleaning up for the next ones to get seated right away, too.
TOM YAM SEAFOOD
shrimp-calamari-scallop-lemon grass-spices-tomato-mushroom-lemon leaf-coriander
$6.50
We shared one of my favourite type of soups, a Thai-style sour and spicy tom yam with seafood. I really enjoyed this! The broth was a lot more tomato-y than I was expecting, but it was delicious. Would have definitely loved to have more of this. Our server brought us an extra bowl to share the soup.
INDONESIAN FRIED RICE / NASI GORING
chicken-shrimp-mixed vegetables-egg-topped with fried egg-shrimp chips
$10
Craving rice, I ordered the Indonesian fried rice which was a massive dish for $10. I loved it, and it wasn’t too spicy. It was so much; we got our leftovers to-go. I also really enjoyed the shrimp chips! We also ordered curry and poured a little bit of it onto the shrimp chips and rice.
ROTI & CURRY BEEF
$9
So good! The curry dishes here are apparently must-haves, and I can see why after trying this one.
BLACK RICE PUDDING / BUBUR PULUT HITAM
rice pudding made from black glutinous rice, sweetened with palm sugar,
served with coconut cream
$5
DELICIOUS. I was a huge fan of this dessert. Super sweet, and the small portion was a perfect size for two of us after such a heavy meal. There’s actually a lot of black glutinous rice pudding under all of that cream!
I love this restaurant! The food, service, and atmosphere were fantastic. I thought the prices were great for the quality and amount of food served to us, and it wasn’t a long wait for our food after we were seated and had ordered. Though it got a lot less busier and crowded, there was still a line up after we left sometime after 9pm. I would definitely come here again in Richmond Hill, and try one of their drinks to go with dinner!
This is one of the most authentic Malaysian cuisines in the Greater Toronto Area. Definitely suggest to order the chicken curry which is rich in flavours and having brought some of my Malaysian and Singaporean friends and they have deemed it authentic with their stamp of approval. Order the chicken curry with roti prata and roti prata with egg which is a South-Indian pancake that is crisp on the outside. Additionally, the Hainanese Chicken Rice and the Chicken satay are always good bets too!
I wanted to keep my birthday as simple as possible. No fuss; no muss. I was quite specific about this. My wife obliged by taking me to Restoran Malaysia… exactly what I wanted. Now, since I started this blog, one of the most memorable things I have eaten is Rendang Beef… enjoyed at an Indonesian restaurant in De Pijp, Amsterdam, called Sari Citra. I have been trying to recreate this meal ever since. Lured by the possibility of eating this elusive dish once again, we headed up the 404 to Richmond Hill in the hopes of arriving for lunch before our baby daughter fell asleep in the car.Success! Molly is awake and ready for lunch… as are we.
The staff greet us with smiles and seat us at a large table that comfortably accommodates both our stroller and the massive spread of dishes we’re about to order. We start with a delicious Red Curry Chicken that’s filled with generous pieces of White Meat, Cilantro and Red Peppers. The best part is that it comes with both rice & roti, which basically turns everything into a wrap. Amazing!Next up: Nasi Goreng. Think Indonesian Fried Rice that’s full of Shrimps, Chicken and Mixed Vegetables (of the frozen variety), topped with a Fried Egg. Served with Shrimp Chips for scooping, this is a great dish for sharing; perfect for adding a little starch to your plate. My wife is in the mood for noodles.
The house recommends the Penang Char Kuay Teow which is a wok-fried mélange of Flat Rice Noodles with Egg, Shrimp, Bean Sprouts and Chives, tossed in Soy Sauce. And then, finally, there’s the Rendang Beef. This dish is far too complicated to try at home (imo). It can perhaps best be described as stewing beef cured with ginger, chili, galangal, lemon grass, turmeric, garlic and shallots. Restoran Malaysia’s take on it is far less saucy than other variations I’ve tried in North America. More like a dry rub. Certainly the closest yet to Sari Citra’s rendition… with the added pleasure of a roti accompaniment.Restoran Malaysia’s dining room is quite expansive and is packed full of families during our Sunday lunch visit. Check it out the next time you’re north of the city and maybe you’ll spot the Toronto Food Blog in action. As you can see above (my birthday was in Movember), I’m quite a happy camper.
Lunch with my two favourite ladies and a large serving of Rendang Beef. Happy Birthday to me!
Delicious authentic fresh food, amazing and friendly service from Angela.
Had an awesome lunch here. We got the Mee Goreng (noodles), Singapore Chicken and rice, chicken/crab/corn soup and shrimp okra. Finished off with some Malaysian tea and mango sticky rice for dessert.
Was easy to get a table at lunch, but apparently they are busier for dinner on weekends.
Looking forward to going back to try more!
Having a restaurant that serves food from where you come from is a big plus but that also means that the price tag is huge. Where I come from, the food they serve is probably 20% of the price or less with much better taste (pardon me for being spoilt by really good food back home).
Service is really good, they came promptly to take orders and the food came freshly made and the portions were pretty liberal (compared to almost all food outlets at downtown). Our water was topped up promptly as well as there was some good heat in the food so that's a big plus too!
When I'm feeling rich, I'll definitely come here again to satisfy my home food craving.
I went for a lunch when it was open for dining in. It's large space with enough spacing btw tables with partitions.
The lunch set was really big portion and the price was really affordable.
The taste was average but skewers were pretty nice.
It was my first time having Malaysian food at this restaurant. The decoration was pleasant and very relaxing. They offered a great variety of Singaporean, Malay & Thai cuisine. The food quality was good & the service was excellent. Although it was a bit pricey but my overall experience was great so, it was worth it.
What is Malaysian cuisine? A good combination of Indian and Chinese cuisines. This busy restaurant offers the familiar food that we love like pad thai, green and red curry but I decided to order the fried chicken and it was a balanced mix of Biryani and Chinese fried rice!
As a Singaporean living in the GTA with severely limited options for food from back home, this place is a very reasonable option for me if I am missing home, although prices are on a slightly steeper side albeit the portions can be easily shareable between 2-3 people.
For a restaurant that claims to serve Malaysian food, it is absurd that the curry is an extra charge with the Roti Canai/Prata when it is a default combination, much like a coffee shop charging extra for sugar with coffee. Although the curry is an extra charge, it lies more on the watery side when it’s supposed to be packed with spices and slight sourness. Nevertheless, it does the job for an eatery serving this dish thousands of kilometres away from Singapore/Malaysia.
The Laksa was on the creamy but slightly bland side which gets easily fixed with their in house homemade sambal belacan. If not for the sambal belacan, the Laksa would have been a pity. The Laksa portion was generous with lots of fishcakes, Taupok (tofu chunks), yellow noodles and more, omitting the cockles which traditionally accompanies with the entire dish.
The Teh Halia (ginger tea) seems pricey at $5, although it does some justice to the usual Teh halia that we get at “mamak” stalls in Singapore/Malaysia.
Overall, as a Singaporean, I do approve the food served at this place although there is still room for improvement if authenticity is one of the aims of this restaurant.
