Review The Creek In Cathedral Bistro - Regina

Claire Hanna
The selection of tapas when we went (a Thursday) was unbelievable! They had frog legs, Brie with compote, muscles, and everything was made with delicate care. The presentation was superb (don’t judge the photo, I only snapped it after we had partially destroyed the board!). Just a great twist on some classics to make them delicious and scrumptious!

Wonderful brunch. I had the breakfast bison burger, and my husband the breakfast butter chicken on naan. They were both excellent. Fantastic coffee. Reasonably priced for a unique and elegant brunch - about $40 for the two of us including our coffees. Great service. Only complaint is that it isn't open Sundays during the summer because we want to go back tomorrow before we leave town!

A must for any meal time..a drink, coffee date..would make a great environment for small business meetings....very nice and classy but still sassy!!

Fit us in without a reservation and offered us a delicious savoury dining experience. Thank you

Nice casual restaurant with a unique menu. Waitress was friendly and relaxed. Bison burger was great, and seafood platter was big enough for two people to share. A couple of minor complaints, one could be corrected, the other one maybe not- waitress did not ask us if we wanted any dessert whatsoever, and the guy sitting behind us seemed to think everyone else in the restaurant enjoyed the sound of his voice as much as he did.

We had a lovely dinner for 2 at The Creek! Having not eaten there in about 10 years, I wasn’t sure if the quality would be what I remembered it to be, but it absolutely was! Our meals were absolutely delicious and the server was a lovely, personable fellow. The only thing that makes this a 4 star review instead of a 5 is that the wait staff were complaining audibly to each other about another coworker, which isn’t something any patron needs to hear.

Worth the flight to Regina. How this place doesn't have a full 5 star rating I don't know. I had the cashew and mushroom loaf. Just sublime taste. And the Thai coconut rice that came with it was an interesting counter-punch of flavour. And cardamom ice cream! Where else can you get that?

Ambiance and service lovely - consistent with fine-casual dining. Dinner was beautifully presented but most importantly, was comprised of masterfully combined distinct, vibrant flavours and textures. A delightful experience!

In Regina for work & was craving a nice meal did a little looking around & decided on here & I am sure glad I did the food was amazing. I ordered the mushroom carpaccio as an appy & the crispy stuffed chicken thighs on polenta as my main course, the menu changes all the time so these items may not be available. The mushrooms carpaccio is thinly sliced portabella mushrooms that are marinated & is topped with a crab salad of arugula, crab meat & carrots & was fantastic. The chicken thighs were cooked perfectly with nice crispy skin & was stuffed with a mixture of tomatoes, olives, onions & sausage that looked like they were stewed together & all this was placed on top of a smoked creamy polenta. The entre was fantastic especially the polenta y far the best polenta I have ever eaten & when you add the stuffed thighs to it perfection!

Went there on advice of friends. I went there for my 50th birthday and I was presently surprised with the quality of the food. I drove in from Moose Jaw and I will again. I will definitely refer anyone of my friends to give it a try..

Best high end restaurant in Regina!<br/><br/>Only real complaint is that the atmosphere is nothing to write home about, but the food definitely makes up for that. Why can't Regina have more nice things?!
Claire James
My favourite "fancy dinner" restaurant! The menu is different without being weird, the food is almost always excellent, and the service is good. It is the best in Regina and very reliable. It's the only place I will go for special occasions. Yes it is expensive, about $125 per couple (including tip), but it is worth it.

This is the best (only?) high end ,meal I have had in Regina... very glad I came here!<br/><br/>Pricing is beyond reasonable for the quality of food, but the wine list and atmosphere aren't that impressive. Very minor points when you consider how awesome the food is. I will definitely return!

Hmmm sign says they open at 11, website says the same, no one there at 11:45 Monday am though? <br/><br/>I suggest you phone ahead just in case<br/><br/>It is a long walk from downtown hotels to find out they are not open. A longer walk back if you are hungry and you wasted 30 minutes of your lunch hour walking and not eating<br/>

Another great dinner at the Creek in Cathedral Bistro.. My wife and I have eaten at the Creek in Cathedral Bistro many, many times. We live in the area and it is great to be able to walk to and enjoy a few glasses of wine without worrying about driving! Tonight was special, it was our 10th wedding anniversary dinner. I had called ahead to see if it would be possible to have a bottle of champagne served for this special occasion. They said they would look into it an call me back. Well sure enough I received a call back with the details and asked if I would like to have the bottle chilled and presented in an ice bucket! We arrived to our table with the bottle waiting for us and was quite a lovely surprise for my wife.<br/><br/>The food was excellent as always, we started with the 'tapas for two' (as usual) and were not disappointed. I then had the salmon special and my wife the chicken with risotto...excellent and perfectly cooked. we finished off with the famous molten lava cake, baked fresh to order and 2 spoons please!<br/><br/>I don't quite get some of the negative reviews I've seen on this site. I'm sure we have been here for dinner probably 15 to 20 times over the years with NEVER a bad experience, great atmosphere, service and food! Yes, it may be a bit pricier of course, but it's expected and well worth the experience. We don't go out to dinner often, and when we do it's special for us....<br/><br/>We will return for sure! Thanks for reading.

Great night out!. Visited The Creek for the first time last night and had an amazing experience. We ordered the Tasting for Two and loved every bite of it. Every course was extremely good! Our server was very nice and helpful and the wine was tasty. Will definitely return and wish I had gone sooner!

Best Brunch Ever. We went here for brunch and very much enjoyed their quality of food and service. Will be back again!

Had the traditional eggs Bennie for brunch, yummy! Sauce and eggs done well!<br/><br/>Fresh mint in the fruit salad added zing!

The Creek has been our go-to since we moved here from Vancouver five years ago. We experienced the tapas and tasting on a Monday night recently and are upset we didn't come sooner. The set menu for two started us off with a trio of lamb ravioli, duck confit strudel and pimento cheese stuffed mushroom caps. The soup of the evening was a mushroom and blue cheese so we thought we should maybe split one of those as well and we weren't disappointed. The tasting portion of the meal first brought us a pistachio crusted halibut on a bed of basmati rice that made us feel like we were back on the coast. Our second dish was a honey jerk short rib with a wild mushroom potatoe crepe that melted in your mouth. For dessert the server brought us a delicious lemon curd tart which finished off our meal perfectly. My company has hosted several functions here over the last few years and the staff has always been accommodating to our group and specifically my colleagues food allergies and special requests. We will be back soon

Unfortunate. Last year, we went to the Creek in Cathedral with a $50. gift certificate we had received and were anxious to try the restaurant. The gift certificate was from some time ago and the date just missed the deadline that would have required the Bistro to legally honour it. We asked if they would honour it regardless but they said they weren't obligated to do so, so no, they wouldn't. They were within their rights. Had they offered to honour it, even at partial value, we would have been completely happy, and given that we eat out twice a week, possible regulars. While I am not great a math, it seems to me that one times a gift certificate is very much less than 10 or 20 times two meals. Instead, we eat at the very welcoming and tasty Life is Good where we feel like royalty every week when we eat there, as do the folks we recommended it to.

I went creek number of times throughout last year . I usually loved their lunch menu esp chicken breast on chibata. <br/>over years, they changed the recipe to worse. just sweeter less expensive ingredient (less avocado etc) . service is better at dinner times. well the food is not consistent . dont get me wrong its still good. but not great. Steak was good

Wonderful dinner. I took my partner to the creek for his birthday and we had a great experience. It was our first time and we found it quaint but a wonderful atmosphere for a special occasion. The waiter seated us right away and he was very attentive. We shared a plate of their daily tapas, which had great variety and flavours. We did have to wait a while for our entrees to come out but they were delicious. I had one of their specials, a prosciutto-wrapped halibut with a red pepper sauce. It was cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious. We will return and recommend the place to friends.

Went to the creek for my wifes birthday dinner and we had the restaurant to ourselves which I thought to be peculiar since ive read reviews and it seemed like a great place. The lady serving us seemed nice and we settled in and ordered. A few minutes into waiting for the food I heard the distinct sound of a microwave.... now to some that might not seem like a big deal... but to most, its a lazy way to prepare food that does not cook food properly. We continued to hear the sound of a plastic microwave door closing and opening and the beeping of a microwave... my wife and I had enough and I asked the waitress what that microwave sound was and she said maybe its the computer? She later said it was the dishwasher.... ive worked in the industry for years and know what a disher sounds like. I hate excuses but more than hating excuses i hate lies. My pork loin was so overcooked it was completely dried out and wad very rough to chew. My wifes salmon was hot on the inside and warm on the outside.... if you like microwaves cooking your food go to the creek. I would seriously consider for the owners of the creek to get rid of the microwave and train the cooks better.

Very Good, not Great, But Very Good!. We went on a Wednesday Night. we were the 2nd couple to arrive. The atmosphere is quaint, but the building has a musky smell to it. This dissipated once the place filled up and food was being cooked. <br/>We had 2 servers, neither introduced themselves which I feel is a no no in the service industry, especially a restaurant, but they were very kind and nice. We started with the tapas which were awesome and had the Halibut Special and the Pecan Chicken Special entrees which were all so very very good! I personally would have liked to see a few more veggies on my plate, but still very good. For desserts we had the Creme Brulee and the Chocolate Lava cake. Was disappointed in the Brulee but the Lava Cake was pretty good, have had better. <br/><br/>Final Thoughts: <br/>Would go back for appetizers and wine definitely!<br/>Would all so go back for entrees, but not dessert. <br/>Wish they had a more private dining area.<br/>Reminds me of what the Mediterranean Bistro use to be many many years ago.

Great location and great food. Brought a visiting friend here and it was very good.

Romantic, bistro setting that's worth a visit. I really liked the setting and music of this place. Romantic, relaxed and a European feel. I had salmon and I really enjoyed it, top marks to the chef! A few more muscles in the starter dish and maybe some bread on the table would have been nice :o) <br/> I did find it pretty expensive, but if you fancy a classy evening with your love and don't mind putting your hand in your pocket for good food and wine then I would say go and see what you think. <br/>It closes at 10 pm and we did have to drink up and leave pretty sharpish, so get there in good time.<br/>All around a nice experience, glad we tried it.

Opened strong but went downhill. When it first opened some 10 or so years ago, this place was awesome. Like many restaurants in Regina that open strong and then decline in quality (e.g., willow at Wascana, table 10), it went downhill. Occasionally one gets a good tapas there but, like another reviewer said, the place is more miss than hit.
Kim
Pretty good.. Salmon and tapas, perfect! Prices are great. Service was pretty good. Worth going.
Sherri
Amazing. Great food. Great service. Made for a perfect night out.

Alright, but I probably won't return. I went here on a date and was a little disappointed with the entire experience. The meal was delicious, a bit over priced, but definitely very tasty.<br/>The service was average, nothing too fancy. It was clear the wait staff were pre-occupied with their own conversations then with serving their tables.<br/>Some minor problems I had was my beer was served in a dirty glass. Now not a dirty as in water spots glass, but there were visible finger prints and a filmy sticky residue on the glass. Not sure if it was properly cleaned after its last use, but when we brought this small issue to the waitress she promptly brought a new beer and a clean glass.<br/>Maybe it was just the waitress we had, but after deciding to order the steak special with seafood, I was served a steak with mushrooms. When asked, the waitress assured me I had ordered the steak off the menu, but if I wanted she would bring the seafood so I could add it on top. I'm not trying to sound whiny, but when I worked in the service industry, the customer was always right, no matter what, so to be told that I ordered something off the menu after ordering the special peeved me off a bit.<br/>Overall the experience was alright, nothing special, nothing horribly wrong, but I won't be returning anytime soon.

Saturday brunch was fine but not enough sweet options. Also the staff needs to stop talking about inappropriate personal subjects.
Erin
Awesome!. Ate here for the first time tonight and it was the best meal I've had in Regina probably ever! Definitely recommend!

Very Nice. I have eaten at the Creek Bistro twice in past 6 weeks and both times were excellent. The first time I had salmon and it was the best sea food I have eaten in Saskatchewan. Last night I had the Taster for Two menu and all the dishes were done to perfection and well presented. One time there were two of us and the other a group . Both worked very well. I have and will continue to recommend this place.
Jan
Very Nice!. This is a very nice restaurant. The food is amazing and the atmosphere is relaxing. If you visit this restaurant I would highly recommend going on a Monday evening as we did. The menu was creative and had something for everyone. Presentation of the plates was top notch. We went this time with a large group but it is good for any size crowd. I will tell all my friends to check this one out!

Awesome!. Went on a Monday night with a group of 12 people... Food was amazing... Kudos to Chef Warren... Done to perfection and exquisite taste. Will be coming back again!

Adequate, overpriced, discriminatory. Food was adequate if overpriced. The fact that the owner is a bigot negated any positives. A person in our party, a First Nations artist, arrived before we did and met with a very cold reception by the owner who seemed to not want to seat him. When we got there, she just giggled and pretended like nothing happened. Unfortunately we didn't know about the incident till well into dinner or we wouldn't have stayed.

Dinner, June 4, 2012. Food was only mediocre, steak was tough and veggies were cold. The waitress every time she came to the table smelled like a freshly smoked cigarette. Really nice to have dinner by. Thought there was no smoking inside, had she been outside, maybe wouldn't of smelled so fresh. We have gone here many times and have had good food, but obviously they are not keeping up the standard, best they smarten up or there goes another Regina restaurant! Certainly not worth the prices.

Quiet evening. This place has a limited menu - the selection I chose was the salamon -- it was was OK -- not great. I guess lately I have not been WOWED by any restaurant in Regina -- you can see that the boom has hit -- prices are up and quality is down and service is hit and miss. Would I go back -- no probably not. One thing that puzzled me was that this is considered a bit of a "classier" place and the staff both on that night were wearing blue jeans -- WHAT? Yes, blue jeans!

Terrible service. Snooty, condescending,and slow.
Mike
Pleasant experience. The food is exceptional! Prices are in line. Service is fine. Quaint atmosphere. I will definitely reccomend to others.

Very Disappointing. Very poor! We went there last night, it was a slippery snowy night, limited parking out front and who was parked smack in front of the door - their own vehicle! Hard enough to get elderly people in - but if you're going to park there make sure it isn't a 'marked car'.<br/>The server advised there was only one serving of the salmon special left - it was 5:30 p.m. with only 2 other tables full? Was it left from the night before? I ordered the paella - it arrived cold - went back and was 'nuked' so didn't stay hot long. Way too much cream sauce, drowned out the tasty fish. The appetizer for two was also dissapointing, very little food for 2 for $12.00.<br/>I've been there before and enjoyed it, but this experience made me not want to return, ever.

Really good food, and fun too.. Great stuff, yummy good!!! thanks.

Food Good but.... Food is ok... service was not and if you go with a group... make sure the gratuity is on the meals and not on the tax... I hate dropping $400 on dinner (business group) and being nickle and dimed on an extra $5 tip ... would have left an extra $20 but not if you are going to try and sneak that past me. Will not be back

Amazing Experience and Food. I can't begin to explain how wonderful this little gem on 13th is. The food is extraordinary, the restaurant is quiet and well maintained. <br/>With a rotating menu so there is always something new and exiting.<br/>I definitely recommend the pistachio crusted lamb-chops and roasted asparagus
Leah Constable
This is probably the best restaurant in the city! Romantic, outstanding food, and the service is impeccable! We go every year on our anniversary. Make sure to call for a reservation, it is not a large dining room!
Michelle O
Love this place great food & atmosphere. The desserts are awesome. A little out of the way but definitely worth the trip.

Very very disappointed with this place. Even if it is the best food in regina - They should not discriminate against who they want to serve. I walked in at 6:30pm during a week day. I asked for a table an the host looked me up and down and sniffed no room. I looked at all the empty tables around me and said what do you mean no room? What about all these empty tables? And she said they are reserved. I glanced at the reservation book and saw it was empty. So I left. Ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous

This is our favorite restaurant on Regina. Best food, great steaks, awesome service and atmosphere. Plus it's a close walk to dessart for ice cream after.

The best meal I've had in months and months. I took my husband there for his birthday with some friends, and every single one of us loved what we ate. My steak was done to perfection, the meal was large without being oversized, and they remembered to refill my coffee, which a lot of restaurants neglect if you're not paying for a more expensive drink.<br/><br/>If I could afford it, I'd be back there every week.
L
Great brunch. The Saturday brunch is amazing. Definately a stop when I am in Regina.

Just had mother's day dinner here. Really great tasting food, from the apps to the entrees. We ordered different items so I had a taste of each. All tasted great to my expectations. Small cozy place, so make reso's before you come. All in all, great tasting food.
Glutenfree
Best food in Regina. Consistently great quality and product. The cooks challenge conventional taste combinations to successfully produce an amazing journey for your taste buds and eyes. They are great about accommodating gluten allergies without issue, one of our favourite spots in Regina.

Love it!. I left Regina a year ago, and I still think of their delicious brunch. The spinach feta omlette is wonderful, and the coffee is good too. I only wish they offered brunch more often. Next time I am in Regina, The Creek brunch is on the top of my list.

When I was in high school, it was normal to trek over the Kowloon House for the Won Ton Soup. The Creek Bistro continues to make this item. It has also expanded the vistas of the cooking and culinary experience in Regina.<br/><br/>Anything served that uses local fair or builds upon Saskatchewan produce is world class. What do I mean? It parallels the Crillion in Paris. I had the opportunity to compare the food in a one week period.<br/><br/>In parallel to the meals served at Michael Stadtlander's Eigensinn Farm, local fare is bright, clear with defined flavors and contrasting textures. It is satisfying and overall a unique experience.<br/><br/>Where I get frustrated is with efforts to parallel other regions and genres of cooking. Some of the dishes can be a shadow of the original. Nevertheless, I have eaten the best steak and fries, not baring Paris, here in Regina. Indeed the luck of the cow, and right cooking time.<br/><br/>The restrictive alcohol laws of Sask, harkening back to prohibition era temperance sentiments, prevents the development of a wine list to match the food. But this will change with time.<br/><br/>This is truly a culinary gem of Regina and should not be overlooked.<br/><br/>Cheers

Great food, finest ingredients, talented and creative chefs! Plenty of veggie!. I stumbled onto this restaurant quite by accident and am so very glad that I did!<br/><br/>The food was excellent, especially considering that ultimately what I ordered was not even on the menu. I happen to be a vegetarian and the wait staff was only too eager to inform me that it would be no problem at all, "Just let me check with the chef to see what options we have available tonight."<br/><br/>My expectation was that there would be a "token" vegetarian dish, nothing special, just there to "keep the peace." I was QUITE delighted to learn that the chef was prepared to make any of three different selections, all of which sounded interesting and delicious. I opted for a vegetable terrine in puffed pastry. It was wonderfully prepared with a savory sauce between the layers and just a hint of mild spice. All around simply delicious and satisfying. Reasonably priced, too!<br/><br/>Now, then don't let me set the expectation that it's all about the veggies. ;-) There was an even wider range of interesting sounding selections for the carnivores, as well, and the restaurant was filled with folks who were obviously enjoying the "regular" food, direct from the menu.<br/><br/>I'll definitely be back for more!<br/><br/>I snapped a photo of the menu, even though the wait staff informed me that it does change frequently, according to the seasonally available ingredients.
