Review Momo Sushi - Red Deer

Guy Jackson
A small out of the way restaurant with fantastic Japanese food ! I’ve had many types of their sushi & it’s been sooo good ! Last round I had the seafood yakisoba , super good but I wish they would have used the larger round noodles. I’ll be back - Decent prices too ! Just my two bits

Absolutely wonderful place for sushi. The pieces are bigger than usual, which I love. The taste, quality and selection are top notch. They are currently only doing take out and delivery due to Covid-19, so heads up on that. I highly recommend this gem located by the Red Deer Courthouse in downtown Red Deer. So good! Last night the wife and I paired our order with a beautiful bottle of Sake. Delicious!

Momo has been our go-to restaurant for many years now. The high quality of their food and the friendliness of their staff have remained consistent. They have a very diverse menu with options for dietary restrictions. Thank you Momo!

Hands down the best sushi/Japanese food in Red Deer. The quality and flavor of the food is amazing, as is their service. Can't recommend them enough. You will love it. BC Roll is delicious!

Delicious ood and large portions. The staff were super friendly.

Always has the best sushi and miso soup. I love this place. The staff is awesome too. The atmosphere is very relaxing and inviting. I love all their plants.

The quality of food at Momo Sushi has definitely come down from 3 to 4 years ago. It used to be the best Japanese restaurant in Red Deer but now it is only subpar to mediocre at most. Me and my friend went there for supper yesterday. I ordered the Dragon Roll and Prawn tempura. All I could say was nothing stuck out when it came to the presentation, and taste. The once flaky and crispy battered prawn tempura that i remembered from 4 years ago is now replaced by prawn tempura that looks like it was bought frozen from Walmart. I used to remember eating ever little cripy bits of the fried tempura batter on the server basket but not anymore because they cook it differently now. It looks like they just dip it in batter and fry it like it didnt cost $16.99. I used to get the Spider Roll years ago. I stopped ordering it cause the quality of it had tremendous come down. It wasnt the same as before. I instead ordered the Dragon Roll and just like everything else it was mediocre. Nothing in it's presentation and taste was memorable. Yesterday will be the last time that I'd go to Momo Sushi. There are other Japanese restaurant in Red Deer that are more memorable when it comes to the atmosphere, food presentation, and taste of the Japanese food; Momo Sushi is no longer that place. And for godsakes replace the damaged chairs with cushions in them cause it wasnt comfortable sitting on them the entire dinner.

They have expanded the size of this restaurant. I wish they would have some matching chairs and improve the ambiance a bit. The food is good. In fact some of the rolls are almost too big to eat.

Never had a bad experience coming here. Always great food and good service whether it's take out or eat in. Lots of veggie options which I appreciate and the prices are great value, especially compared to the other places in town.
Jordanna
Obviously the sushi is very good when it has the word in its name lol, but the tempuras and sashimi are also very very good here! They have very fresh ingredients and the service is friendly and knowledgable.

Delicious sushi in Red Deer, I am no expert on the subject, but I seriously enjoyed the food. The rolls were a bit large, but they were nonetheless tasty. Delicious!
Cjohnstoni
Never disappointed, the food is always fresh and excellent. Good value also. There is but one problem and that is they don't post there closing hours well, I have seen a few people turned away when the kitchen is taking a break @2. They need to post it on their door.

So, I have only tried it for takeout and have never sat in, as my wife and I enjoy sushi, but our kids do not.

Momo is the best I have had- and not just in Red Deer.

Positive:
The food looked very beautiful. Time was spent to make sure that even takeout orders look fresh and fun. The specialty rolls and the tempura were excellent. The dynamite roll was our favourite, besides the tempura- have I mentioned the excellent tempura? It was crispy and light. Even the small things were done right: good wasabi, and the pickled ginger is a good one, I think its a commercial brand, but its a good choice. Everything was fresh and was waiting for me at the appropriate time.

Negative:
Not a lot of negative feedback, but the cost of sushi would be my one concern. They aren't alone here and maybe its just a geographic difficulty- Central Alberta is not exactly crawling with tuna, but this is a reasonable if not a fair price. On that note: I didn't like the thickness of the sashimi. The salmon and tuna were cut too thick. They were perfectly cut, but just too thick for me. Maybe a thinner cut would yield better mouth feel and taste, as well as affect a change in price as you could charge less for thinner sashimi. All in all: very good.

Recommendations:
TEMPURA! Excellent. The miso wasn't bad either and their salad dressing has a pleasant sweetness. They have a sushi platter that is very reasonably priced, but my wife and I didn't care for the BC roll, get a double dynamite roll, or other substitution. Don't shy from the combo plates as they give you a chance to try a few things, but you wont get change from a $20 back...

This is my go to sushi place. The food is always hot and fresh. Everything that I've tried there has been so good. It's always quick never had to wait too long. The service there is usually good.

Wait staff needs to work on food timing for large groups, because sometimes people will be completely done eating before the rest of the group even begin to get their food. The rolls they make are very delicious, their appies are wonderful and I love the ambiance of the place.

Stopped by red deer for some sushi, parking is convenient. Came here on a weekday around 7, parking was free so it was a plus. The decor is very Japanese, quite weird how the room is split into two sides. Ordered different rolls & seafood pancake. The seafood pancake is HUGE.

Absolutely incredible Japanese food. Everything from the maki rolls, sashimi, teriyaki plates, tempuras, yakisoba dishes.. even the miso soup and green salad are some of my favorites! This has been my husband and I's favorite sushi place for years, even standing up to some of our favorite places to eat sushi while living in Calgary. Compared to them all, shiso, sushi sushi, sushi maru, this place is hands down the best! The service can be a bit slow, (shiso can be far worse) but for the quality of food I'm more then happy to wait.
Glad
Very contented with my lunch bento. 😍Chicken teriyaki suits my Pinoy buds, the salad is fresh. I love the Takoyaki here! Been to shiso and Sushi Sushi, I would say the best Takoyaki is here so far.
Jordon Kramer
Amazing food compared to sisho...and they didn't raise all there prices like other Japanese restraunts....highly recommend it! We eat there every week.
Seared Beef
This place used to be the go to sushi place for me. Now it has gone completly down hill. Must be new owners, Again. My sister had brought take out to me on my jobsite (8 mins away) and I didnt even finish, despite being a hungry construction worker, threw it out. Yakisoba was yuck! Oily as hell. Bento box worse than a grocery store, blah cali roll and again OILY teriaki. And the last time I had gone in, no sushi because no rice. Are you kidding? Shut the doors.
Snackabu
Momo sushi is by far the best (read: authentic) Japanese restaurant in Red Deer. Generous slices of sashimi and house rolls as pleasing on the eyes as on the taste buds
Taylor.dbleu
Wow amazing quality! Very impressed! I don't particularly go to a sushi restaurant looking for great service. We order food, have fun with the people we are with and pay. Very reasonable prices. Would definitely go back!
Nii Gyamfi
Not the greatest experience. Had to wait 15 mins before having our order taken or even being brought a drink. And that was only because I flagged a waitress down at the 12 min mark. The portions were decent for the price but a little heavy on the rice where the rolls were concerned.
Tria Christine
The great food didn't make up for the Brutal service. Had to ask for the sushi we were waiting for after 45 mins with only 9 table there and they still forgot part of it.
Alexandra_sainsbury
Just right!. I go there a lot, and I always get the Sushi and Sashimi Dinner. It's delicious! Also, it's just the right amount, so you leave full and satisfied, but not so full that you feel sick. The staff there are very friendly, and it's a nice atmosphere. Would definitely recommend it to anyone!
Santobugito17171
Very good!. I tried Momos for the first time this afternoon. I got the Dynamite roll lunch combo. The best dynamite roll I've had to date. So good, and a lot of food for $11.50. I will be back!
Cottage75
Simply the best!. Love the food here. ...it is so fresh. My favorite is the sweet yam roll
Happy Camper
Awesome. My hubby and I always visit this place and are never disappointed. Recently we tried another sushi place and were not happy with the sushi. We definitely won't do that again. Definately the best bang for your buck and your tummy!!
Violentshadows
Lame. Every time I've gone they said they were out of rice and couldn't make rolls. What's the point of having a sushi restaurant if you're going to run out of ingredients? Rice is the main ingredient in most Asian cuisine....it's kind of important. I won't waste my time going back and trying again. 3 times is enough.

UPDATE - gave this place another shot after 2 years. STILL JUNK! Walked in when the open sign was on at 2:30 in the afternoon. Was told sorry, we are going on a lunch break now until 4:30. I can't wait until this place is out of business. The people who run this place don't deserve to have a business.
Best place in town!. Love love love Momo's! The best service! The ladies are so nice and always welcome us with an excited hello. The crunchy crunchy is one of the best rolls there! I could live off of them.. Or i wish I could. They cater to everything we ask for such as no tails or no eggs. And will remember for next time! Would highly recommend to eat at! Great experience.
Dana
I ordered pickup, and while on the phone the lady I was speaking to hung up on be before I could even ask for a total, I told her I did not want fish egg on my sushi, I get home open the package and there are fish eggs on my sushi I called to let them know and the lady I spoke to argued with me and said I did ask for them..it's very frustrating to drive
all the way home after paying for food I can't even eat. And then to be told I am wrong, the prices are low but I do not think I will go back as the customer service is horrible!!!
Jeremy Perry
Always liked going here until I seen a guy use his bare hands to put my left overs in a container, I didn't say anything to save the waitress embarrassment , but that was a disgusting site!!! Next time I won't be so nice!!
Will
Best ever. We have eaten at momo's 4 times now the maki rolls are the best we have ever had, anywhere. lots of wasabi and ginger and the service is excellent.
George Taylor
Super Sushi!. Love Momo Sushi! Wonderful food! I have never eaten in the dining room but the take-out is always amazing. 95/100
Soul Chef
MO Sushi, Mo Sushi. Great Sushi!! May favourite in town hands down! I love their lunch binto boxes, but I dont love their hours! The closing in between the lunch and dinner services gets me all the time. The service can be hit and miss, but always friendly. My goto place for Sushi!
Frank
Very fast, good, and decent price! Cute little place downtown with friendly staff.
Kris Paul
The food quality was good, the gyoza however, wasn't very good quality as I felt I could make better ones at home. Other than the gyoza, the tuna sashimi and the rolls I had were delicious. I came just as they reopened at 4pm for the dinner service and there was only one other table seated, therefore, the service was terrific. Overall rating I'd give it a 2.5/5 stars.
Gloria Kwon
The food tastes really great, and a decent price for the large portions they give out. It can become busy which can lead to long waitings for food to come out; however, it is worth the wait in my opinion.
Anne
Good sushi for a decent price -- will be back for sure! Also, service was great & bathrooms were clean. Give it a try!
Sarah
I've eaten here a few times for takeout, the wait time was very reasonable, and the sushi was delicious! They have all my favourite rolls(love the dynamite roll). Would recommend Momo to any sushi lover!
Vegelover
HORRIBLE QUALITY AND CUSTOMER SERVICE.

The food was a long wait and customer service was really horrible. I ordered various nigiri sushis and the fish was just gross.. NOT FRESH at all. Very disappointed! Not going back again.
MrsVLeek
Best in town. Best sushi in Red Deer - I'm often unimpressed by the structure, stickiness and freshness of some of the other places, but I have never had a bad experience at Momo! They have the best Dynamite Rolls I've ever tasted (jumbo sized!), they have very reasonable prices, and while they might not have the variety some of the bigger places do, everything they make is great. My only regret is that they are closed Mondays, but feeling sad that I miss out on eating there can hardly be considered a negative for a restaurant!
Vicky
Excellent food and service. Prices were decent and it has a very nice atmosphere.
Max Baxter
Mono is where I usually go but the last 3 times I have been there I checked te hours online and it has been closed all three times
AB Diner
Thanks for being in RD!. Thank you Momo for being in Red Deer. This place is awesome! The service can be a bit slow, but it is more than worth the wait. Momo only has a couple waitresses who seem to work all day everyday that they are open so be kind to them. They do the best they can. I recently went to Globefish in Calgary and Momo is far better.

Tempura is light and awesome. Dynamite rolls are spectacular. Combos are huge and a great value.

If you haven't tried Momo you are missing out!!
Amy
Amazing lunch spot!. Love this place for lunch! Bento boxes have a great variety and are delicious! Yes, it does get really busy here sometimes which makes service slow, but the food is worth it.
Mandy Pierce
Not Impressed. Hubby and I ate here once and it was just okay, went back for a second shot and 3/4 of their menu was not available as they did not have RICE! Seriously superstore is a few blocks away, we walked away and tried it yet again where we were told there was no raw fish available! What kind of sushi place has no raw fish. We will not be giving Momo another chance and were extremely dissapointed
Lori Eberhardt
Awesome. Seriously great meal. The dragon roll was delicious. We had a large order and it was ready on tine.
VeggieloverCanada
HEAVEN!. I loved this place. the decor was a mix of urban tables/chairs, mixed with traditional lights and paintings. which gave it a warm sincere feeling.

my favorites were the dynamite roll. yam yam roll. and their salmon roll and nigri. It was obviously more expensive than a franchise (edos, etc.) but this place provides and exquisite example of you get what you pay for. It was a reasonable price overall. I loved the salad dressing and their basic salad was a nice starter to what was soon to come. The Miso soup was very relaxing and a perfect mix.

The only thing that i did not like was the tuna rolls, which is not their fault because i do not like raw tuna wherever i go. I would have liked a little more noodles in my sunomono

The service was great. i have had better at some other places where you just cant top the service (burger baron Sundre, Montanas Red Deer.) which you can see my other reviews for. i have been there three times in the last three days and i have had the same server (Jay), and she was always very friendly. I would give it 4 1/2 stars just because i think that she could have been a little more interactive with her customers
Red
Not as good as before!!!. The restaurant has changed owners and we no longer like eating there, the food isn't as good as it was!
Leah
Pleasant atmosphere, good food. Went here with my little girl. The food was yummy and the decor was interesting. The waitresses didn't seem to speak too much English, bu they were nice
Haannah515
Great food. Real Japanese restruant. I wen there with my family the other night and had a great dinner. The music and decor was adorable and the waitresses were friendly. I recommend going during the evenings when it isn't as busy.
Judy
Too long waiting for food. Takeout for two items took 50 minutes. Waitresses don't answer questions and are inexperienced in customer service.
Konstantine Neikours
Great sushi but terrible service every time out of my three visits here. Wouldnt recommend to anyone unless you are willing to put up with bad service and fact that half of meals on their menu are not available.

Best Place for Sushi in Red Deer. Been here numerous times, each time i've left more then satisfied.
Crispy Crispy rolls and the tempura are a must order.
Those two items are the ones i've always gone back to, or even order a side of next to the new items i'd try.
Great atmosphere, the staff is extremely friendly and the sushi is delicious.
The only place i'll go to in Red Deer for sushi anymore.
Natasha Marika
The sushi is really good but the service is getting really annoying. The last 5 times we have been in there the server will tell us not to order sushi but to order a tariyaki bowl. It's a SUSHI restaurant. We always order sushi and the server always says it will take 30 minutes. Most of the time it takes about 10. Tonight it took 1 hour. No apologies about the wait or anything. If they are a sushi restaurant they should stop trying to convice everyone that comes in to not order sushi.
Red_neck_gurl
Great. We always have fresh and flavourful food here. That's why we keep coming back. The prices on the menu are also very good.
Vicky
Pretty good sushi!! Use lotsa o weird sauce but its good. Shiso is bit better sushi however this place was a good change! I'll prob go back
Aly
Best Sushi. Soo accommodating!! Great service and amazing food!! Freshest sushi in the province!!
Famished Feline
Yummy. Good rolls. The service was fine. Maybe because we were there when it was not busy.

The miso soup was insy weensy small for $2. i would like more than a teacup size. Best roll was rainbow. I wasnt as fond of the Crispy Crispy.
B
Hungry and late for work. Went there for lunch today I warned my boyfriend that the wait is horrible but the food makes up for it. Alas nothing could make up for a 45 min wait for food that naver did show up, as usual the waitress's are painfully untrained in serving. I had to leave hungry because my lunch break was over. this was made worse by the fact I was late getting back to work
Charlotte67
Fantastic but..... Great sushi. Other sushi spots in Red Deer put to shame. Also great teriyaki, tempura, gyoza. Beware though, twice we have been told on arriving at 6 that we couldn't order sushi due to a backlog or take-out orders. Once we were refused because they were out of food and many times last year they were unexpectedly closed for a variety of reasons. Very frustrating. But recently, reliable service makes us visit once a week. Great food. Once or twice food not great, but normally excellent. Well done, but I hope they have ironed out their service issues for good.
Not A Very Picky Eater But...
Disappointed!!!. I was in town for business so I looked up Urbanspoon. Had good reviews so I was extremely excited to try it even after walking in the rain a couple blocks looking for it. Horrible service!!! Got there more than an hour before closing...but the waitress was limiting me on what I could order. I ordered something quick and just as I finished my last bite, the waitress came to me with my bill. I was not in the restaurant for more than 30min and there were still other customers there with still more than 30min until closing. Read reviews...not even comparable to Globefish and Mikado!
Mariaa
Hmmm.... Food is okay, but the service is just horrible. I wouldn't go back unless I had to......
Jen
Best sushi ever!. Best sushi by far - tops Shiso. Prices are great. I did find the service slow but if you pre-order you will have no problems getting your food on time.
Kyle
Here is what's up it is a nice place to sit and hang out but the food that I ordered at 12 came out at 130 that to long for me to wait most places can cook food in that time
El Cantante
HORRIBLE. The service has the been the absolute worst, since they opened. I kept going back because the food was good, but as all good things must come to an end.... The food currently is even worse then there horrible service. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to my worst enemy!
Steve Shaw
Best Sushi in town, hands down!. Red Deer has always had a lot of good restaurants, but Sushi has never been on the list until now.

The food at Momo is excellent, far better than our other Japanese offerings in town (Shiso). For the last 6 months I've gone there at least a couple of times per month, and it's always been good - food, and service. Very authentic, and with a great atmosphere as well.

I have eaten sushi all over North America and a few times in Japan and China as well - Momo is certainly up there with the best, and at a fraction of the price. I would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant to my friends.

Let's Have Sushi While We Wait for Spring!. Miso Soup: It was hot and it was tasty, it maybe could have had a bit more flavoring with some green onions or aubergine added, but a pleasant soup none the less.

Japanese Salad: typical iceberg Japanese salad with a nice dressing...I only took a few bites, nothing special.

Dynamite Roll: this contains shrimp tempura, crabmeat, avocado and massago (fish eggs) and it was delicious, the tempura adds a great crunch...very tasty roll

Spicy Tuna Roll: this contains spicy chop tuna, avocado and cucumber and it was spicy and flavorful a definite winner.

California Roll: this contains crab meat, avocado, cucumber and massago; it was a typical California Roll, lacked a bit in flavor.

Tuna Sushi: two pieces one of white and one of pink Tuna, it was good especially with lemon juice added on, the lemon piece needed to be bigger, hard to get juice out of a thin slice of lemon and without the lemon it would of been pretty bland.

Gyoza: the gyoza was a winner, a bit greasy, but lots of flavor.

Assorted Tempura: nice light batter and crispy, they do their tempura properly, nothing special but done properly is all that matters.

Service: Was very prompt and friendly.

Atmosphere: Awesome, soooo nice inside, but we had a table near the front and there was a cold draft, next time I will request a seat near the back.

Cleanliness: It was clean, but did not check out the bathroom.

Will I go again: YES!!

Pleasant Discovery. Braved trying a "new" sushi restaurant in Red Deer - nice atmosphere in the long narrow space. Food was a bit slow, but delicious!! Rice was fragrant and not packed to tight, overall mouthwatering sushi! We will return again!
I Love To Eat
Hungryguy. We went there for the first time were new to reddeer so we had to try it. The sushi was okay not worth going back for that price we have gone to a couple other one in town and this one we got a turned off service was there but not coming aound our table I dont no why they didnt seem busy and it took forever to get served and they didnt come check how everything was once we got the food little different there. Also not the cleanist place in reddeer went to the bathroom and almost couldnt go in pretty disgusting have to be cleaned better then that can just amagine what the kithchen looks like if the bathroom to there costomers looks and smelled like that wow.

I have an addiction to Momo sushi. It is consistently amazing and I am always impressed with the price and how quickly I get served. Spicy tuna rolls are my favorite.
HungryCanadian
Great hidden DT Sushi. I stopped into Momo this afternoon, I have been wanting to go here for some time now after reading the reviews. I tried in the summer and they were closed for a reno or vacation somtething like that. This tiny little gem doesn't look like much from the outside but faily cozy inside. The service was very good I got warm smiles and friendly service, I decided on the Dynamite Roll Platter comes with miso and salad. I also chose the Crispy Crisp Roll hybrid of the Dynamite roll combined with california roll. Presentation was very good, rice was seasoned well and quality was really good. Momo knows what there doing and I really enjoyed my visit so far one of the Best in Red Deer 4/5.
Donna The Beef
Unreal sushi. The best on red deer fast service and good downtown location
Totoroponyo69
I have been eating at this restaurant for about a year now and all I can say is how remarkably the food always tastes great and looks presentable to eat. I have noticed while reading the reviews that very few of them actually know and appreciate this authentic traditional japanese culinary art. While going and placing my orders to the server I have never had any problems with my orders but fortunately I always seem to get the same server that seems to always smile. All I can say to everyone that goes there is " be patient " the food is coming and its worth the wait !!
Travelling Trainer
Great lunch sushi deals. I had the $13 nigiri box, which was fresh and delicious. My colleague had an $11 roll box, which was more than they could eat! Even on a cold Alberta day (5*C) this sushi hit the spot.
Brenzo
AWESOME AUTHENTIC JAPANESE FOOD. After having mediocre Japanese food in Red Deer for the last 2 years, I was thrilled to have Momo open it's doors.
Authentic Japanese food, quality ingredients and fair prices.
Only complaint is that the service can be hit or miss based upon server (particularly because of the language barrier). We had an error on our takeout nigiri sushi despite having made every effort to confirm the amount of sushi in each order.

.........waiting...waiting...... I recently went with a long time friend to show her another place other than shiso and she is not so into the raw fish...so I told her there is other great lunch specials....we also chose to go after the lunch rush around 1:30 but had to wait around 2:30 to get our food....although our server which we had to waved down after being ignored for awhile that maki and sashimi will take at least 45 mins...we thought "cant be that long"....well we did wait that long...but to my disappointment was that the rice was not cooked....had to forcefully swallow the maki....my friend did not like it at all......just a bad day....

-----17 May, 2010-----

Awesome food but service lacks. I love the food they have...the rice is soft and lots of vinegar..i guess that is what you get for a japanese chef who takes the time to make his rice. Great job!! I love the decor..new and fresh..

Service is lacking though. They are only fast when you are the only one or a couple of tables are in there dining.

I remember I went in there a few times where it took our serive over 30 minutes to get to us and when she did...it took her another 15 minutes to bring us our water...we had to watch several tables come, eat and leave before us. Being a server you would somewhat understand but 45 minutes before order is just ridiculous....
ACE
LOVE IT!!. This is my favorite place to go in Red Deer for Sushi!! I have eaten there many times with my family who are Sushi connoisseurs ;) I have brought first time sushi eaters here and they loved it. We all love this place!
The price is great, the service is even better and they treat my kids so well. The decor is modern, a bit romantic with beautiful touches of Japanese art . I can't say enough about this place, it's just amazing you have to try it for your self!
ToothFoodie.com
This roll was esthetically appealing thanks to the smoked salmon on top and the mayo draped across. It was similar in size to the dynamite roll, but had help from a greater portion of rice. Speaking of the rice, it was cooked well, on the drier side which helps with retention around the roll. Like the dynamite roll, it was rolled tightly which avoided crumbling on pick-up.
HungryCanadian
step inside this little gem and the interior is warm and cozy very tiny maybe 70 seats long and narrow, you will be greeted quickly with a warm smile and friendly hello.
There Is Always Room
We also went with three rolls. We mainly chose them for the awesome names.

Momo Sushi rated highly on the Red Deer version of Urbanspoon. It didn’t look like much from the outside, but it was quite nice inside. I was there a bit later for lunch, but the place was still quite busy with folks on their lunch breaks.
