Review Makimono - Pickering

Michelle Russell
All you can eat Japanese style buffet on Sunday. The location opens at 12 noon. You can make reservations or not; preferable for large groups. The service was fairly quick and selection is pretty good. The location is wheelchair accessible. Prices are ok with lunch buffet priced at $29

Love Makimono. The only sushi restaurant we eat out at. $28.99 for all you can eat lunch. Always fresh, fast service and amazing customer service.

Great food and service! Some things were missed on our order, but nothing to complain about. Recommend coming here for a fun and casual sushi experience.

Been to this location twice and I think im done. Really stingy with the items, fill up on rice type deal. But so far its the only place that serves salmon sashimi for lunch, which is super cool. But its thick squares... Pictures are the " rainbow roll " and tuna maki roll. You can tell this place has adapted to the palate of pickering. This is the best sushi you will get in pickering though. Also its another place were you have to be super aware of your order. Waiters try to play tricks on you, don't want to get into. its a solid 2/5

Very good option for sushi + Asian food. They offer 'all you can eat' as well as 'a la carte'. There is free parking at the front with plenty of spots. They are offering dine in during the pandemic with reduced number of tables. They also follow the protocols (mask + proof of vaccination)

Worst sushi I've had in a while. The salmon in my salmon teriyaki was a joke. And the sashimi didn't look too fresh from what my friends had. We ordered 4 separate bento boxes but they brought us the rolls together on one plate, and one dish of soy sauce for our tempura. Not the most hygienic in a pandemic era.
Andrew Moore
Great menu, wide variety of sushi choices as well as other items. Food was enjoyable and they also offer fast delivery with Skip the Dishes delivery service. Have to specify for then to keep hot food items separate from sushi otherwise they will pack same items I'm bag together. Would recommend this spot

I tried to order miso soup and seaweeds but nothing came. It was not the typical Japanese Resto bec they also have dim sum and Chinese noodles. The washroom is dirty. The server is not so friendly. For the price that my daughter paid for Friday night is not worth it.

When we ordered our food, the miso soup is supposed to be first. Nope they give us some of our rolls first. They only give you 1 napkins each. Then I ordered my tea. They only give you in the cup which is ok. But then the waiter never even asked me if I want more water or not, I have to ask for it. Overall experience not a good at all. Miso soup is terrible, taste awful. Never go back.

I used to love Makimono...we went tonight for dinner February 17th 2018...I think they prepared a lot of sushi in anticipation of mid week Valentines day...because the sushi we were served three days later was NOT fresh! We paid the bill and "both" left with a very pasty and fishy mouth! That bursts my Makimono's bubble...not sure I will be back that fast!!

Good food. The service has improved greatly and we have become regular customers again. I just wish they would add chocolate ice cream to the menu.

Sorry seems to be the waiters favourite word, very slow, when I ordered meats from the grill it seems they dont want to serve it, after 30 mins i had to ask the waiter, then they brought less than was ordered, so frustrating. Waiters always seem to be running around, and seems that they dont care..

We always come and Eat here Because we find the place clean and fast. The food is outstanding.

This is a review based on Makimono’s takeout. Overall the sushi was quite good and tasty. I’d recommend the Tropical Roll , the green dragon roll and the Volcano roll.

A friend loved this place and said I should try it. Naturally all you can eat options are fun but when they offer sashimi, it makes it even better. <br/><br/>Good price point and it has me coming back - even after all these years if I’m in the area. You certainly get your money’s worth. The service is always friendly and fast.

This place is your standard "all you can eat sushi" restaurant. You order your food via IPad, the wait staff checks it and the food starts to roll out. <br/>This is a good place to start for new to sushi/Japanese food people. It's also good to re new food items. <br/>Fairly priced, clean restaurant and friendly staff.

Extremely disappointed about how quickly this place has gone downhill. I've been a loyal customer since this location was established, but my most recent experience has driven me away for good. I went here for all you can eat lunch with my mom prior to heading to an appointment, and the service was very poor. First off, we were given defective ipads to order off of. I strongly believe the staff were aware that the ipads were acting up before we ordered, because we saw them fiddling around with it for a long time (longer than usual, as we have been to multiple AYCE places using the same system) prior to giving it to us. When we ordered, we waited quite a bit of time only for the staff to come back and tell us that the ipad was defective and we needed to place our entire order over again. <br/><br/>We finally placed the order with a (supposedly) working ipad, and proceeded to wait another 15 minutes for one order of hot and sour soup to arrive (for people who frequent AYCE sushi restaurants, this is extremely slow service). When it came, it smelled foul and was extremely thick, to the point where we had to give it back because it was absolutely nauseating. We know what good hot and sour soup is supposed to look, smell, and taste like.<br/><br/>We were then slowly served 2 other dishes (one order of black pepper beef and stir dried udon), while other tables who arrived after us were quickly being served what looked like their full orders (tons of sushi, tempura, meat, etc). We sat there waiting with 2 measly dishes. No one approached us to give us an update on our order until we called them over to ask them. The service did not have friendly body language. They would quickly reassure us that it was coming, but never followed up. We ended up waiting an hour for the rest of our meal, and we needed to constantly call servers over to ask them if the rest of the food was coming. They also had to confirm with us what food we had not received yet - only when we called them over. We did not even receive our full order by the end of our meal.<br/><br/>The food quality itself has also deteriorated. I would say it's worth it to just check out some places in Scarborough or Markham if you want to feel like you're getting a quality meal for the money you are paying. The rolls are tiny, the quality of ingredients is visibly poor, and the selection has diminished. They seem to be offering more Chinese/Thai style dishes and less of the actual sushi. Even for a lunch menu. <br/><br/>After a little over an hour and 15 minutes, we were going to be late for our appointment and we could not even finish our meal. Not to mention, we were no longer even hungry after waiting so long for each dish.<br/><br/>The server told us that we could pack up the rest of the meal if we wanted, but that's all she could do for the massively inconvenient meal and unaccommodating service. We asked to speak to a manager. The manager then hesitantly offered a measly 20% discount after we had asked for something to be done with the bill. Apparently knocking off a little bit more than the tax is the only way they can compensate. She also said they wouldn't charge us if we wanted to take the food home, which they would inevitably be throwing out anyways. She said this to our face.<br/><br/>Just overall poor customer service, management and food quality. The worst I have ever experienced from any AYCE sushi place - and I have been to some very sketchy places over the years. I am normally very patient and understanding with staff, and not even picky with food quality. It speaks volumes that I even made the effort to write a negative review of this place. <br/><br/>This place is close to my heart as it was the first really good place to come into Pickering, but times have obviously changed. I certainly hope that they revamp the management of the place and return to the quality that it used to be known for.

This place is your standard AYCE sushi restaurant. I had one of their lunch specials for $13 after tax and tip. There was 5 pieces of sushi and a California roll. My meal came with a soup and salad. The service was quick. I would return again if the mood strikes.

This place used to be great. Used to come here all the time. Now, not so much. Value and quality has gone down. You can find better sushi not too far away.
Korean Food Monster
We came here for a friends birthday because they have some sashimi items available for lunch and it is 17.99 per person which is really good. They also have a lot of food options which were all pretty good. I was impressed that their jello was made well and not diluted with so much water!! Which normally happens at buffets. The interior was nice and ordering was a breeze with their touch pad. Overall, really good experience.

One of thr best Asian places to eat. First started going there when it was just Japanese. <br/><br/>The food is good however if you don't go early the food is warm if that. Also slow if you go late.<br/><br/>Best place to get hot sake
Aaron
Been there lots. Not as good as it once was, but the sushi is fairly good. Everything is ordered using an iPad. Best in the area. I would recommend it to anyone.
Food.trapper
Was hesitant to go after reading all the negative reviews on service. Personally no complaints, we had a large party that was quite high maintenance. A few mixups but we did have over 70 dishes. Some of the rolls were a little mediocre. For all you can eat. I'd recommend it. Especially if are taking someone who not a huge fan of sushi. There a large variety of non Japanese dishes.

This location is MUCH better than the Ajax one. I only go to this one now. Great sushi and good service.
TheFoodFella
One of the better all you can eat sushi restaurants. All dishes are made to order. The staff is courteous and friendly. Reasonably priced for lunch and weekend menus. Ordering through iPads makes the experience even better. There is also enough Japanese and kitchen items to satisfy even the pickiest non-sushi fan.

Pleasantly Surprised. I went to this place on a Saturday night around 6:30ish, we were promptly greeted at the front and seated. Our server Suzuki was very friendly. For $25.99pp I was expecting really good food and I was not disappointed. We ordered the tempera shrimp, butterfly shrimp and I can taste the freshness of the shrimp in both dishes. The pad thai was a bit overcooked but everything else was very well cooked and delicious! Our total bill was $70 with tax plus tip so I would definately come back but only on a special occassion :P

Terrible Service!. Worst service ever. Food average and prices not cheap. But if you want to go somewhere and be ignored then this is the place for you!! Not worth it!!!
Kellyphil
Terrible food!!. The rice had no flavour the chicken wings look like they just came out of the freezer. The sesame chicken was either over done or sat there all day under a warmer. The sushi was very boring didnt taste very good and looked like it was thrown onto the plate. We spoke to the owner and he was very rude he gave us money off of our bill but definately not enough we didnt eat even 10.00 worth but still charged over 60.00 definately not worth 24.99 for dinner we will never go there again or any other restaurants connected to it.very poor customer service he definately does not care about pleasing bis customer or returning customer.

Good for AYCE. For an all you can eat place this is really quite good. <br/><br/>They messed up our order a bit and we needed to remind them on a couple of item but it was quickly fixed. The downside is when it finally got there we were pretty full and it left a lot of waste. Still they did not charge us for it as other AYCE might. <br/><br/>Pretty good.
Cindy
Really surprised to hear poor service! We go frequently and haven't found that. Tasty, good value for an all you can eat in Pickering. We'll be back!
T
Absolutly no customer service! Prices are pretty high for what you're getting.

Worst AYCE restaurant. We went there for lunch last wednesday , arrived at 3:15 pm , standing there for 10mins till a girl found us , we order and we eat but the drink never comes , and they keep sending some kind of dishs thats not belong to us ,the table is full without drink , we ask for bill but never comes and we have to pay on the front .<br/>bad food. Horrible service !<br/>I sent a email to the owner and all he/she reply to me its "sorry and i will talk to the owner thats taking care of pickering makimono"<br/>WTF???<br/>never plan to go back

Corrupt Business Practices. I made reservations at Makimono for lunch on Mother's Day. However, when we arrived we were informed that they would be serving all day dinner, which costs $8 more per person. This angered me because 1) when I made the reservation (in which they were aware it was for Mother's Day) they didn't inform me that it would be all day dinner and 2) they knew that with it being Mother's Day, people would have no choice but to pay the extra $8 to avoid having to wait a long time for a table at another restaurant.<br/>Another incident occurred on Valentine's Day. It was a Tuesday night, but makimono was charging its holiday & weekend prices. This would be fine if Valentine's Day was a holiday, but it clearly isn't.<br/>I'll admit that Makimono's food is above par for AYCE sushi, but I refuse to support a business with such sleazy business tactics.

1/2 you can eat. So i'm a bit confused.<br/>so is it all you can eat or only half you can eat because last time i came here they brought 1/2 of our orders even though we checked off more things than a stoner's grade 10 geography test scantron sheet.<br/>horrible service

Arribed at 10pm. Ordered food. 10:25 pm Table was filled with plates no room to move. POOR consideration. 10:30 given the bill and asked to pay now. Back round music was turned off and floors were being swept and moped around and under us. Addressed the manager about this and was told sorry. Nothing changed. Would Never go there again. The hand rolls were filled with rice very little sushi. All in all bad experience.

Decent AYCE Japanese...... Having eaten AYCE sushi in Markham and Scarborough growing up Makimono is a bit disappointing. <br/><br/>The Sushi/Rolls are okay but lack the proper consistency of rice to produce a proper tasting result. The rice is a little too soft which makes the sushi/rolls a little soggy for my liking. <br/><br/>The side dishes are good (tempura, teppenyaki, teriyaki ...etc) and are on par with what I am used to. <br/><br/>The restaurant itself is nice and clean however the exhaust fan in the kitchen isn't strong enough. After dining in their dining room you'll leave with your clothes reeking of fried foods. <br/><br/>Definately one of the better AYCE sushi in Durham but I'd much rather take an additional 15-20 min trip into Markham.

Bad Business Practice. Continuous horrible service aside, this restaurant very much annoys me. They have an ATM in the lobby, and make claims their visa terminal doesn’t accept debit. However on a visit where the ATM was down, they were suddenly able to accept visa on the terminals. Seriously, it seems like they are trying to profit off their customers in any way they can. <br/><br/>Food wise they are a gamble – sometimes its great, sometimes its awful. <br/><br/>Regardless, its not a place I will ever go again.
Razvan Puia
The miso soup very diluted, lunch menu very limited in choices. Slow service. Never to return.

Never To Return.. WORST SERVICE. The entrance to the restaurant itself is difficult to find and enter and when you finally do it is totally NOT worth it. I took my family out for dinner and not only was placed behind a wall at the back of the restaurant basically hidden, we were neglected on several occasions. It took almost an hour just to receive our drinks and we had to ask multiple servers for the wasabi. The fish was questionable and plain as if it had been sitting out for a while. Even when we did finally get the attention of the servers they were RUDE and could not even speak proper english. I understand that being oriental is part of the atmosphere of the restaurant but it does not trump the fact that this location is in Pickering which is an all english speaking area. It also took forever to get the bill and the worst part was that they DON'T take debit. Something they failed to mention before. Overall it was a horrible experience for crappy and overpriced sushi and I would never recommend this place to anyone unless they wish to be treated like complete garbage. It is clear that the owners only care about grabbing your money as fast as possible and not tending to the guests or interacting with them either

Horrible Customer Service. Hot Miso Soup was spilled in my lap, it scorched my skin. Not to mention ruining my outfit. My friends were shocked that the waitress just walked away, without apologizing and then threw a mess of napkins at me seconds later. She later complained that my friends were disrupting the restaurant for complaining.

Service needs to improve. This restaurant is almost always packed....a sign that Pickering is really in need of good quality Japanese food. <br/><br/>However, the food here is mediocre in taste and quality, but that's what you can expect for an all-you-can-eat price. The portions are very small, so you'll find yourself having to order more. The waiters are very slow and inattentive. You practially have to jump out of your seat to get their attention. You could be choking on your food with no water on the table and they won't notice. Often they forget to bring some of the items that you ordered (perhaps hoping you've forgotten about them). Often you have to wait over 40 minutes to receive your order. Items also come at the wrong time, with main dishes coming before the appetizers. <br/><br/>I would rate this place as "so-so" in terms of the food quality, and poor in terms of service. There are better Japanese restaurants in the area, but they are not "all-you-can-eat". I guess you get what you pay for.
Cravejapanesefood
Won't come back. Rude service, low quality japanese food..sorry.
Jason Good
Delicious food! Waiters are nice. The experience at makimono is worth the price. Bring cash because they don't accept debit
Nicole Pokas Quickert
The staff is rude! The food was okay but not great!
Jason Backus
We had the all you can eat dinner. The sushi was good, but not great (but my standards are high having formed my fondness for raw fish in South Florida but minutes from the wharf.). The rest of the foods we sampled were excellent. On top of that, the service was friendly, knowledgable and attentive. 4 1/2.stars!
Erika
Good food.....but. The food is always good, I go here all the time. I love the spicy crab rolls and the green dragon roll. The best around Ajax/Pickering if your looking for an all-you-can-eat thing. The only downfall of this place is the service. We enjoy the food so much that we always come back but its become an ongoing joke that they always miss one or two items we order. I dont know whether this is on purpose (most people order too much, I know we have) or because they dont read it. If you ask them about it they never know what your talking about lol. Ive worked in the industry for over 5 years. Things seem disorganized. You never have one designated server its just a little chaotic. Dont let this deter you from going youll enjoy the food for the price and the all you can eat. Just a warning.
Roscoe P. Coltrane
Absolutely brutal service. The rudeness of the staff and manager is appalling. Ajax location is ten minutes away and is so much better. Food at the Pickering location is not as good as I question the cleanliness and freshness of the fish
Franny
The service here is terrible and the tempura is over cooked and cold. They took 35 mins to bring edemane beans and salmon sushi. Will never eat here again

My favourite. Not sure what people are hoping for here. This is an all-you-can-eat place, not a fine dining experience. Of course things come out a little at a time, they are supposed to. If you want something more traditional, go to an a-la-carte restaurant or order something off this restaurants alacarte menu. I have tried dozens of all-you-can-eat japaneese restaurants throughout the gta and this is by far the best one i have been to. Service is always consistantly good even when they are busy and food is delicious.
Maryia Rusanava
Downtown feel in suburbia. This restaurant attempts to bring downtown feel to suburbs. The interior feels classier than other local eateries although a little dull and colourless. The food comes in small portions so don't hope to share single plates of appetizers. New dishes come at the right time just as you are done with the previous ones. Salmon sashimi was rather disappointing though.
LG
Haters. Busy means people are going there for a reason? Food and Service are Just Right! Clean and Relaxing enviornment, Lovin It!!!
Lisa
Slow service, order shrimp and get 1 at a time. Orders that came to the table were not correct. Food was not wonderful. Would not visit again
JessieS
I could eat here for life. Hi guys and gals its Jessie! I eat here probably twice or three times a week. Such good food and good for you!
Adriano Mancino
I will NEVER go there again. Wait times were completely unreasonable! 45 minutes for our first dish, and it was cold (tempura shrimp). We didn't even get all of our dishes and got some we didn't order. I am willing to drive to Ajax to go to Sushi T&T.
Alexandra Ziolkowski
Best fryed tofu ever!!! Craving some right now
Kristen Gallacher
Very good food. Sushi is great! I am a repeat customer! Sometimes there is a language barrier with our server.

Good. Reallly great for sushi lovers! decent prices too.

When you need a Japanese "fix". Makimono offers a sit down, pick-out, buffet of Japanese morsels to dine on when you don't know quite what you want to have but know it's got to be Asian inspired, and for me that's often!

Nestled in the Piazza Del Sole lies Makimono Japanese Restaurant. Makimono is a traditional sushi restaurant offering two ways of dining: All you Can Eat or ordering a la carte. The real value lies in ordering the All you Can Eat Menu as it offers you a chance to sample all their fine cuisine. Come with a couple of friends and sit down in the comfortable and stylish environment. Then start ordering up a storm! Your best bet is to order small orders of what you like to space out your meal. Try a bit of everything; they have great appetizers and lots of great sushi options including sushi rolls, maki rolls, sashimi, temaki rolls and their in house special rolls. They also serve various rice dishes and noodle dishes. Makimono also offers take out and free delivery service for orders over $20 in the designated area. So come on down with some friends and enjoy this All You Can Eat Sushi experience!
