Review Red House - Pickering

Souvik Ghosh
Tried this place as we were feeling to try some south east asian food. We did a takeout of lemon soup, cashew chicken and basil fried rice with chicken. The soup grows on you. The portion sizes were decent for the money. Loved the cashew chicken. The fried rice lacked a little salt. Had to add separately and was better. Takeout was ready in 20 mins.

Hands-down the most unique flavour combo that you could get for take out and the depth of flavour will knock your socks off! Definitely a must-have place to grab food! Menu marked with out favourites that we have had to date! Get enough to have leftovers, still super tasty for the next few meals!

Had to order take out from here due to COVID-19. Brought the food home and had a feast! First time ordering from here. Really enjoyed the food! Wow amazing! Next time we have to try their other menu items.

Great local place, good for take out or eat in. Sit in is pretty basic but clean and comfortable. Can get busy on Friday /Saturday so make a reservation. Noise level is fine. The fresh spring rolls are really good. We had the cashew chicken and beef chef's special which were good. Service was good last night but can get slow on weekends. Around $35 for two. Would be more with drinks.

This is my favourite Thai restaurant! The food is always delicious, and served quickly and hot! The fresh spring rolls are the best I’ve had anywhere and the Malaysian yellow curry is sooo good! The service is always friendly and helpful. I come here with my mom at least once a month and they remember our order every time! I will continue to come here until I can talk them into opening a branch in oshawa!

Ordered food for the family and it was simply awesome… everybody loved it…ginger beef, cashew chicken and sambal chicken were just loved by all with the other fried rice items…

This restaurant used to be great when it first opened however has gone downhill - had the pad Thai - it was terrible. Noodles in red sauce with chicken - vegies were 2 pieces of green pepper and a couple shreds of cabbage - this was off the lunch menu.

Update: the basil fried rice has been missing from my life until today. Don't make my mistake, give it a try! We've ordered here a few times now for takeout. Super polite service on the phone, tasty food, good pricing. Can't go wrong! (Try the sweet basil beef!)

This little gem in Pickering has become 'our' spot for a friend and I who get together once a month to catch up. Last time we were there for over 2 hours yacking away with no one pressuring us to finish up and leave. Our bill came to $17 each including tip. The food is wonderful and more than reasonably priced.

The golden tofu is amazing! Even if you say you don't like tofu, you will enjoy this appetizer. All the curries are amazing. Check it out, you won't be sorry.

Been going to this place for years for takeout, its the only Thai place in Pickering that I like. Ive only ever once sat down in the restaurant to eat but the girls working there are always attentive and nice. The green curry, basil fried rice and pad thai are always my go to!

This is the best Thai place in the area. the best food, good portion sizes, swift pick up times, and nice workers. Overall a great place to eat and each menu item is delicious. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone. My favorite items include the golden tofu, all three rotis, the cashew nut chicken, and the Malaysian curry.

If you love Thai food this is a great place to get some in Pickering.

One of my faves is their roti with curry. It's sooo yummy.

They also have pad Thai, and Thai corn cakes which is delish.

A must visit if you're in Pickering and need a place to eat.

Delicious. Love the food here! It is always fresh, and very flavorful! The coconut soup and coconut rice is amazing.

I ordered the "pad thai with shrimp and chicken" for take out. It was the worst pad thai I've ever eaten. It was essentially over-cooked rice noodles with ketchup dumped on top of it. There was only two sad little shrimp hidden in the tasteless mass of unfortunate dinner.
I WILL NEVER RETURN, you should never try it.

It was alright but I found it not spicy enough. If you want real that food go to the best place in Toronto khan San road!

Be honest this is not Thai. I wish that cooks and restaurants would be true to themselves but I have found all over Durham region restaurants pretending to be one thing or another.
Admittedly that is very harsh but unfortunately true in many cases.
In the case of BOTH Red House and recently departed cook and server started Red Kitchen the menu may say Thai but instead its a Malaysian or Chinese version of Thai.
Visits 2
The Atmosphere is very clean and looks almost chainish. But assured only one location exists. 8/10
Service, very fast and friendly though a strain to understand the broken english. 8/10
Food. passable as "generic non thai" - Thai 6/10 only saving grace was hotpots and fried bananas and the green banana leaf sauce is nice.

Overall
7/10
I have to say here, go to a real Thai restaurant and not one pretending to be one. Thai is a popular restaurant word being taken advantage of by non thai cuisine. If I had my wish they would be bold and open a Malaysian or Vietnamese or Cambodian restaurant.
To visit real Thai please read my review of De 'Siam it doesnt get much better than that.

Your going to love this place!. I strongly disagree with the reviews that might mislead people not to try Red House. My family & I are regulars there, and their food has always been flavorful, hot, and nothing short of delicious. Try the green curry, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Stuff happens ... but it shouldn't!. I've tried numerous dishes here and they were delicious but i can't go back after i found a piece of curled up metal that looked like it was from a scouring brush in my takeout dish. i know stuff happens, but in some cases like with food, it just shouldn't happen.

Best Thai food / Great People. This is our favourite restaurant where we keep coming back! The food is delicious and the service is warm and friendly. The staff make us feel like house guests! Thai and mango salads, chicken wings (really!), Thai Chicken Soup, Green Curry, Roti Canai, Pineapple Rice, Sambal Fish, and the list goes on. Enjoy!

Wasn't happy. I didn't like the food at all, just my option. I didn't find it tasty like real Thai. If any one wants good Thai go to Hot Mama Noi's Thai On The Fly...by far hands down the best.

Great food. I am not sure why this restaurant is getting trashed here. I have been going to this little restaurant for a couple of years here - almost always for lunch - and now I can't pick which dish I love the most. I don't eat meat, so get tofu sub for my dishes and they are always great. Pad thai used to be my favourite, but tofu with vegetables and cashew may be my new favorite. Give it a try. Reservations needed for weekend nights.

Just had the pineapple fried rice and pad Thai and they were great as usual. Not sure why the negative reviews from others but I've been a fan since 2009 and continue to be as they have amazing dishes!

Don't listen to the negative reviews. These people have no clue. The food is fabulous and consistent. Give this place a try. It is the best Thai restaurant in Durham and Scarborough. You will love the warm and friendly atmosphere. We have been coming here for years.

Have had great and have had blah. I guess it depends on the chef of the night!

Wow, the reviews are misleading and are obviously fake. The Thai food like flavorless. Tastes bland like pho. Stat away for your own good

Are you kidding me. This is not Thai food, more like ChiThai. Have never tasted such horrible food in my life. McDonalds serves better food

The food was horrible. I took two bites and I could not even swallow it. I wanted to drive back to the restaurant and leave the food outside their doorstep. The food was watery and bland and to think I asked for medium heat. Bleh. Think twice before you eat there.

Absolutely Ridiculous. I was hungry for something to eat last friday night and I was grabbing a bottle of wine from the whites road LCBO. I stopped into the Red House Thai place to sit down for a quick meal with my 12 year old daughter. At first the place was decent and they started me with two ice teas. I asked the waitress for a glass of water and ten minutes later it was brought to me. Then out came their food, 2 pad thai chickens(our favourite) 30 minutes later cold and looking as if they had forgot about it sitting near a window in the back, I complained to the waitress and she immediately got the so called manager and they grabbed the plates away from as if I had done something wrong. I was clearly offended but still was hungry. My daughter wanted the pad thai and I was not prepared to leave. It was quiet in there and no reason for my food to take so long. I heard the door to the microwave close and the beeping sound clearly echoed through the kitchen door and I waited to see what they would bring out. It was the same plate that they had first given me and I could tell by the shape of the food. I was incredibly mad and I stated that I was leaving and would never return. Everyone in there was rude to me as if I was crazy and there was only one other customer in the store to witness. I would recommend they be shut down by the health deopartment or at least everyone should stop going there. I will never recommend this place to anyone and their establishment is soon to be closed due to the overwhelming popularity of Hot Mama Noi's at liverpool and bayly anyways. I hope this never happens to anyone out there as it is completely unacceptable.

One of the better thai places in pickering. Had a nice time eating lunch here, much nicer atomoshpere in the dinning area. Decent prices too, I was eating at Hot Mama Noi's but they've gone downhill since opening. Red House staff is awesome helpful and respectful you dont see that in the other thai places in pickering.

Great thai food!. This is a nice small restaurant with very reasonably priced food. I've been there many times over the last few years and have always enjoyed every meal. They have great curries, soups, spring rolls, and mango salad. During our first visit, the chef was kind enough to come say hi to our table, and made us a special dessert that wasn't on the menu. Often times it's so busy that you have to wait for a seat.

Vivien and I met up halfway in Pickering at this restaurant called The Red House. It was early when we met, so the restaurant was empty. It got really full as we were finishing up our meal. It must very popular among the locals. We started with Golde

I circled this strip Mall twice before I find Red House Thai & Malaysian Restaurant.. The sign is really small.. or I am just getting older?!

The waitress here is super nice and welcoming... and when she knows that we speak the same dialect, she got more exciting and even went into the kitchen and tell the chef that someone here eating speak Cantonese... sigh.. is it a good sign?

Lunch Specials serves from 11 AM to 3 PM Daily... starting from $6.95 includes 2 spring rolls and a pop.

Mee Noon Goreng Chicken ($7.45)

- it is really vermicelli stired fried with chicken and veggie in a Sambal Sauce

- It is served in a metal wok... sigh...

- not bad, but I think I can do it by getting a bottle of Sambal sauce from the supermaket... it lacks the real taste and kick of authenticity

- Spring Rolls are frozen supermarket varieties too

It is a little unfair to based my review on just one visit or one particular dish... but really sometimes it is the first impression that counts...

Red House Thai & Malaysian is a decent restaurant in Pickering area because of the limited in choices... so if you are in the area and you want an Asian food fix.. you won't be disappointed.
