Review Haaseltons Cafe - Peterborough

Very friendly atmosphere! The owner always greets me, smiles and has a polite conversation. This is a great place to hunker down and do work, internet is reliable and it tends to be a quiet environment. Drinks and snacks are good as well.

Stephen at Hassletons has always and probably always will be one of the kindest people you'll meet. The coffee is excellent and its a nice place to be. Some of the negative experiences are from a former employee and not the owner. You'll always have a great experience here!

AMAZING SERVICE. I unfortunately did not get the name of the gentlemen, but he made our drinks perfect and was incredibly kind. My new go to place for matcha lattes and pumpkin spice all year round! Such a lovely place.

I love this space to hangout, whether it be for a quick coffee with a friend, or to study or spend time on the laptop. The local art on the wall is cool to check out and maybe even purchase. The staff is friendly and the dark roast coffee is great! Check it out.

I don't drink coffee but my friends that do don't seem to mind it. Nice quiet place normally. Tables and good lighting. Pie and other baked treats are good. Try their pecan pie. Staff is very friendly.

Free wifi. Decent food and beverages (really like the green tea smoothie). Has a nice seat next to the large window looking outside into the street. There is always some people there, and its nice and quiet if you want to simply work on your laptop.

Always a welcoming atmosphere and conducive for students looking to study. It's run by the nicest staff. It offers a quiet space for artists and an open space for group study sessions. Probably the best café in Peterborough

If you are looking for a meeting place, maybe for your book club or a table top game or a group history project haaseltons has lots of comfortable and large tables and a real relaxed atmosphere. Good coffee and treats also.

Cool place to chill out. Good coffee and an interesting variety of beans. The cheesecake was dry but the seat by the window is comfortable.

Awesome and delicious! Very friendly, great coffee. They used frozen coffee cubes instead of ice in their iced coffee drinks which was very cool

Descent food...bad service. Very rude owner...doesn't matter if the food is good. if the service is substandard you will loose customers.

Disrespectful to costumers.. I was a loyal costumer to Hassleton's coffee shop. I was in there a lot working away because I enjoyed the atmosphere. That was all until today. Today I was bullied, yelled at and accused by the owner for stealing the internet and never purchasing anything. Even though I am there multiple times a week and am always drinking an over priced tea. As such, I promptly left the shop and as I was walking out was told to never come back. I have seen the owner be disrespectful to other patrons as well. I shall be taking my business elsewhere. Just wanted everyone to be aware so they too are not treated this way.

I had a really good London Fog here, and a sip of my sister's equally yummy green tea latte. I got a piece of Bailey's cheesecake. It was good, but I don't think I'd get it again. The other desserts in the display all looked good and I hope to go back sometime.

Awesome (but why does the bathroom need a key?) To be short and sweet I love this place. Easily makes you feel at home. Mostly because if the friendly, cheerful and helpful baristas. My favorite drinks are the lattes which they all seem to make flawlessly. (French vanilla lattes are the best though there). The seasonal drinks are also ussually very well done. In short a great place to grab a warm drink especially with a friend and chat for a while out of these Canadian winters.

Excellent coffee. Haaselton's has excellent coffee, and I would say that it is the best in town by far. The quality of their coffee is consistently good. Their staff are extremely friendly and polite every time. There is also the added benefit of nobody singing obnoxiously while they make your coffee!

A few observations. This place used to be great back in the day when it was run by the original owners. i don't go there anymore for a few reasons. 1, poor ventilation - your whole body and clothes smell like coffee after one visit. 2. skeeve factor - handles cash then makes your food without washing hands first. 3. pests - flies!!! 4. food with no spit guard or cover - attracts flies!!!! yum-o. not. 5. coffee is ridiculously strong. free wifi isn't enough.

Love going there. I think Haaselton's is great, so I go there on weekends now to study and eat desserts. There is a great variety of drinks and treats, and I find them less expensive than other places. The guy who works there is also really nice and helpful. He smiles at everyone, and the last time I was there he walked over to ask me if I liked the jamaican coffee, and the time before that he walked over to ask me if the internet connection was good.

Who would consider this "good" coffee?. I don't know where to start about what I didn't like about this place... Met a couple friends there on their suggestion. I heard it was so good, etc etc. Well the coffee was terrible - and I tasted not only mine but my other two friends coffee's as well. I have managed a coffee shop in the past so I know what I'm talking about, the beans that the coffee is made from taste stale, indicating improper storage. From there it doesn't get any better... Desserts taste like they've been hanging around for awhile and a warm smile wouldn't hurt. Not just take my order and take my cash.
I strongly recommend Natas down the street where the coffee is CONSISTENTLY good and fresh, they have unique foods and desserts to choose from that are always fresh and you're always greeted warmly. If you're lucky you'll be there on a shift where the young girl w/the short hair and piercings is working and she will sing while she makes your coffee. She has the voice of an angel.

Also disagree.... I have always found Haaselton's staff extremely friendly and eager to please!

A rebuttal. Mr. James Bradley.
I wonder if you realize Haaselton's is a business, not a rest stop. I would posit that any other restaurant/coffee shop owner would have the same reaction to you if you brought outside food into their establishment! If you had money, why didn't you buy something upon entry to the shop.
James Bradley
Beware!. Haaseltons just lost a customer forever.

I will never again set foot inside that place for the rest of my days, which is saying something, as I've been a loyal customer for over a decade. I'm aware the place has been getting dingy in recent years, and they've instituted a strange, petrol-station-like policy of making you request a bathroom key on a stick before using the loo, but the place has nostalgia for me, embodying many fond memories from my long ago days at Trent University.

That Asian guy, whom I can only assume is either the manager or the owner, committed what I consider to be one of the service industry's unforgiveable sins.

The story: I was meeting some friends for coffee and snacks and went to Natas (another coffee shop nearby) by mistake. I didn't realize I was in the wrong place until after I'd ordered something to eat, sat down and checked my cell phone. So I gulped my chai and asked for my cake to go and then ran over to Haaseltons to join the rest of the group. Upon arriving and seating myself, the owner promptly informed me that I was not welcome to eat my Natas dessert in his establishment. I told him I understood, but that I'd gone to the wrong place by mistake, blah, blah, and that if I could (please and thank you) eat my one little piece of cake I'd be in Haaseltons for at least the next two hours during which not only would I be buying multiple drinks and another dessert, about a half dozen of my acquaintances (who had not yet arrived) would be showing up to do the same.

He didn't believe me. In fact, he all but called me a liar by saying that he'd heard my "story" many times before (from students, I can only assume). He said absolutely no way would he let me eat any food I didn't buy there. How he intended to stop me, I'm not sure, but I didn't feel like pressing the point in the face of his obvious hostility. In summary - I was told to get out. Please understand that I'm a 40-year-old employed professional who bears as much resemblance to a cash-strapped student as Tipper Gore does to Summer Glau. Heck, I could afford to buy everyone in the joint a free coffee (somewhere else) out of my own petty cash - which I was momentarily tempted to do in an extreme act of comeuppance, but I didn't because when I'm that mad my oratory skills abandon me and I clam up.

Anyway, I don't like being called a liar, not one little bit. Others may feel differently, but the primary criterion by which I prefer one coffee shop over another is whether that place makes me feel good. I go out for coffee so I can feel good, not so I can be berated by some self-righteous idiot who's at least my age and should know better than to break the Prime Directive of the service industry - namely, that the customer is always right. I am permanently offended and will *never* set foot in Haaseltons again.

Ever.

In future I'll be spending my money at either Natas or Dreams of Beans, where the floors are cleaner, the bathroom isn't locked, where there's nice art on the walls, and where the staff know when to shut the heck up and be polite.
