My friend suggested this place and I was rather impressed. It's all you can eat, it's large and they will even let you order from the Dinner menu at lunch (for an up-charge). The service was friendly and the sushi was fresh, but to drive all the way from downtown to Barrhaven is quite a trek. But if you live in the area, then it's great to have a place like this nearby.
It's a generic sushi buffet. I wouldn't recommend this one over any of the other ones that's I've tried in Ottawa but it's not worse than most others either. It doesn't have the electronic ordering system which I find more convenient, service can be spotty when it's busy, but it has a pretty good selection. I go because it's convenient and all the other buffets I've tried haven't proven to be worth the effort to drive farther
Ordered online for delivery. Got 50pc sushi and tempura vegetables for only $40. What a great price in my opinion. Sushi was all amazing but the tempura was a bit soggy. I don't blame the restaurant for this because what do you expect when you order deep fried food for delivery. My only suggestion would be for the restaurant to put better descriptions on what rolls are included in combos but definitely a would recommend as take out
Good food. Servers got mixed up a bit on our orders. Service was fast.

My Favorite Sushi Place!. One of the very best AUCE sushi places in Ottawa (Barrhaven location). Fresh ingredients, unique selection of maki rolls and attractive presentation. Dinner is the absolute best with large selection of seafood. Enough seating for large groups and no time limit pressure. A must have is 1,000 Islands Roll.
Good rolls - other menu items are "meh". I was pleasantly surprised with the presentation of the larger rolls (ex: Dynamite). A lot of AYCE sushi places in Ottawa, I find, cheap out on those rolls but not this place. Dim sum was also good, however other items on the menu are very hit and miss. Oysters were not worth it - mostly batter and hardly any actual oyster. Meat was on the dry side. And don't bother with the soba/udon - it's basically water - even if you ask for the spicy kind they just put sriracha on top and call it spicy.
I did enjoy the rolls and had one very attentive and nice waitress. So overall, it was a good experience with some hit & miss items.
Went for the first time and was pleasantly surprised at the attentiveness of the staff although they should know more about the food they are serving. The food was great...the atmosphere was good...clean bathrooms (always a plus)!
Overall had a great time and will definitely go back!
I see a lot of people have already said exactly what I think
amazing sushi, but god awful service. Its been a bit better lately but is still hit and miss. Personally I never forsake a restaurant because of the service, I'm there for the food.
Consistently good. My family and I come here for sushi on a regular basis and its consistently good. The service is fast (for an ACE sushi establishment) and the rice to fish ratio is good. Most other ACE sushi places in Ottawa have too much rice on their sushi. They also have a great selection of ice cream- black sesame is a must try!
Some of the Best I've Had for AYCE. We have now been to 1000 Sushi Islands twice. Once for my son's Birthday and once on Mother's Day (unplanned since we were going to eat in and the power went out!).
I want to say that I have never been to an AYCE place where they bring everything we order. I am always left wondering if we got everything. Same with this place. The wait staff were pleasant enough to us on both visits.
The sushi is good and flavourful. The size of the sushi (rice with raw fish) and the maki rolls are nice. I sometimes find that the bite-size is too big, these ones are good and I don't feel like I have to stuff a big bite into my mouth ;).
The service was incredibly quick on M-day. Sometimes almost too quick. As regular sushi eaters, we sometimes order most of what we are going to order on the first paper. They brought everything so fast that there was almost no room on the table. As the restaurant filled up though, the service slowed down. Maybe they thought we had eaten enough.
Regardless, we will be back.
Whenever my friends ask to go out to sushi I always ask to go somewhere else since AYCE sushi isn't always the best. after going to the Bai Du restaurant on baseline I realized how much I love this AYCE restaurant. the service isn't great, but what do you expect ....it's not a fancy restaurant
Teryaki. We became regulars...once a week for the chicken teryaki take out. Very good, good portions and the price is very reasonable ($20 for 2 chicken teryaki dinners, with sald and soup). We dont have the soup so not sure how it is.
Staff is nice, they have some problems communicating over the phone when taking your order...relax, be patient, it will be ok.
Good place, when we go in its always busy.
Awesome Food - Awful Service. Best sushi in the city - worst service in the city. STILL worth going to but you have to be in a humorous mood. One time a server came to our table after placing our order and asked if we were REALLY going to order that much.
I've never had a server who was even pleasant.
Outstanding Dining Experience!. My husband and I went there for lunch recently. The service, although, not very professional, however they do try and answered all my questions.
The food makes up for the service. It was outstanding! I recommend the Shrimp Tempura Roll, Shirmp Tempura on a stick, Chicken Teriyaki and Dumplings. Unlimited canned soft drinks and tea, fruit and all kinds of gourmet ice cream flavours are included in your meal. Only $13.99 for lunch and $19.99 for dinner.
Everything was fresh, hot and well prepared with lots of flavour in every dish. We are so looking forward to our next visit!
Love this restaurant! It's one of the few AYCE places in town that serves decent nigiri. I really wish the servers would smile every once in a while, though. Mostly they just glare at customers as though they wished we were all dead. No exaggeration. But the food is good enough to ignore their hateful stares.
They do have a couple of new staff who are much friendlier. Hopefully they'll rub off on the colder ones.
We had a great time here. Went for lunch on mothers day and it was decently busy but food was still delivered fairly quickly. Food was delicious. Up there with the best sushi I've had before. Some have complained about the service here, which I can understand. It wasnt the best but didn't take away from our meal that much. Enjoyed it here for sure.
A very nice place. I have been here a lot! I can't remember how many times, probably about 10. The food is always really good. There was one time that we ordered spicy salmon rolls and the salmon was like mush. So we didn't eat those and when we explained why they didn't charge us for leftover food.
I'm very fond of their shrimp tempura rolls, but I'm also a sucker for shrimp. Their vegetable tempuras are wonderful! The batter isn't too thick. I haven't had their sashimi but my friend will order 60 pieces at a time and finish them all without complaint, so I'm sure it's great. I also really like their dumplings.
Their miso soup kind of put me off. I've had a lot of different misos but the broth in this one tasted really different (and not in a good way, for me). Their spicy soups are really nice though!
There was only ONE time where we had a tiny problem. We were a large group having lunch and one of our friends came but he doesn't like any food, really, so he was just sitting with us. At the end of the meal, they tried to charge us for him, even though he didn't eat a thing. We explained it to them and there was some resistance but we got it resolved. In the end, I understand that we maybe should have told them, and we won't let it happen again.
Food is good. I often go to the Hockey Sushi in Kanata for lunch which I find is pretty good. I decided to try this one in Barrhaven for lunch and took my parents for the first time eating Sushi. Reviewers are talking about the poor service and I agree they aren't the most polite but not any worse than a lot of Chinese restaurants. I'm Chinese and hate to say it but Chinese waiters/waitresses aren't always the most polite. It wasn't very busy of lunch with only about 8 tables of customers. Hockey is very busy for lunch every time I've gone due to the hi-tech crowd. Food came out fast and I got everything I ordered. Made 3 orders and got just the right amount of food. I was concerned food may not be as fresh as Hockey due to fewer customers, but it all tasted fresh and the same quality as the one Kanata. The tempura however wasn't fried in hot enough oil as they were quite greasy. May want to try a few tempura before ordering too much. I think the lunch price at Hockey Sushi increased to 14.99 from 12.99 from about a year ago. Price here is 13.99 and seniors are 11.99. I'd go back. I've attached the menu.
I can't believe all if the nasty comments I have read on here about 1000 sushi islands. When we first moved to Ottawa a couple years ago we started going to the restaurant on Carling and fell in love with it. When we found out about the location in Barrhaven we tried it out and go for dinner or lunch every weekend. The service is always amazing. Because the girls know us well, they always have our drinks ready for us as soon as we enter. The waitresses are all very sweet and get a kick out of us when we try to speak Japanese. Yes, sometimes when they have a huge dinner rush items are forgotten but if you let them know that something was missed they are always prompt on ensuring that you receive what you ordered. I suppose I'm one of the few people that understand that restaurants are run by people, not robots. People do make mistakes. So what if something was forgotten? Is it really the end of the world? No, it's not. Anyway, the food is well above AYCE standards. It's freshly made and always delicious. Not only that but the menu is huge. We have never had any complaints at all!! Everyone that we have taken there has made it their favourite sushi reataurant too. Love it!!! I highly suggest that if you're looking for
I thought that 1000 Sushi Islands was really nice...atleast when I went it was fun.
The place is beautiful and open. There are black booths and the tables are clean and black. The plates are beautiful with delicate designs. The walls were decorated with a variety of things and there are two large screen T.V.s in the middle of the large room, both playing different things. I don't remember if there was any music playing but it wasn't noisy and I like the soft chatter of other people, feels more homey.
The sushi served to us was delicious. At the front there was a station set up so customers can watch the chefs make the sushi.
The service could have been better, but I got my food so there is no point in complaining.
All in all I really enjoy 1000 Island Sushi and if you enjoy eating sushi as much as I do then I highly recomend it.
Excellent Food & Service. A geat Saturday evening experience. The restaurant is modern and very clean. The menu is varied and it will surely please just about everyone. For two persons it cost us $51 including taxes. This is an all you can eat experience from the appetizer to the dessert inluding the green tea. You start by selecting your food on a menu list and your food will be brought to you shortly afterwards. We are definitely going back to this restaurant.
The service was fast and friendly. The sushi was fresh. For a $ 12.99 all-you-can-eat experience, no complaints! One of the best sushi restaurents in the city.
Good AYCE sushi. It's hidden in a corner of the shopping complex so it can be hard to find. I felt that the sushi here is fresher and food better than the one more centrally located. However, the menu is slightly different and there are fewer items. Ordering is better here because it's done on pre-printed sheets. My family will definitely be eating here again.
I am going back there!. I am very glad to find another All-You-Can-Eat Sushi place in West End. The choice is the menu seems a bit less than Sushi Kan but the quality of sushi and sashimi was much better. It wasn't a big of deal for me anyway because I eat only the core of the sushi (no sushi rolls). I will definitely go back for more sushi!!!
p.s. They charged only $5.99 for a 4yr old.
Great quality and value. I lived in Japan for 12 years, and have a Japanese wife. We both agree that 1000 Sushi Islands is a great place to eat in Ottawa. The variety and quality are well worth the price paid, particularly at lunch. We live in Barrhaven and used to go to the Carling location, so are happy to have one near home.
