Terrific experience, September 11/2016. Pleasant wait staff. Server greeted is within two minutes of being seated. She took our order for drinks and brought them moments later. our first dishes arrived in less than five minutes of being seated. More dishes arrived about six minutes later, before we had finished our first dishes. Our server checked with us several times for what we needed, if anything. We needed more ginger because we love lots of it with our meal, additional condiment sides arrived quickly. Are you thinking, based on previous reviews that the restaurant must have been empty...it was not empty. Seven tables were full in this cozy-sized restaurant. Hot foods were served hot and cold sushi and sashimi were properly cold.
We were happy about our decision to try this restaurant despite reading a number of terrible reviews. The service was faster than at Sushi Kan and 1000 Island Sushi. Our server gave us personal attention. We look forward to trying their Bento box lunches.
The only thing that I would recommend would be that they advertise on-line that they have an All You Can Eat menu. We asked about an all you can eat option when we phoned to make our reservation. We left satiated and satisfied and are pleased to make this recommendation.
For me nothing can beat their lunch special: Salmon bento. Salmon with rice, sushi, spring roll and algae. Great
Good service, nice decor and a good price.
FAVOURITE RESTAURANT EVER. Went the first time with a friend and my god!!! Best restaurant ever! I find myself wanting to go back every single time. There is a HUGE variety and 99% of the menu tastes AMAZING. Every time I visits, I wish I have a bigger stomach. The Crab Pizza is THE best!!!! The service can be quite slow but I really don't mind. Highly recommend it!
Edit Nov 14, 2015. The food isn't as good as before. They edited a lot of the recipes and things are either too bland or too salty. The sushi rice was a little too warm for comfort.
Good fresh sushi!. Its very fresh and awesome! Best I have tried in Ottawa so far!
Delicious food. Terrible service. We had to call her over everything we ordered something or water, or to even take our dishes away.
The food was quick and delicious. But the service kinda killed it unfortunately.
Met Expectations. I stopped by during my lunch hour last week. Service was fast, especially considering that I was there at noon.
The sushi was good. I had avocado rolls with avocado that was a nice texture and shade of green (I've been to places where it's starting to turn brown, if not almost completely brown, and/or too mushy), and the rice was just right (ever had sushi with overly wet rice? I have; not here, but I've had it, and it ruins everything). The yam tempura rolls were perfectly breaded and crispy.
The service wasn't overly friendly, at least not by western standards. Maybe I wasn't fazed because I've lived in places with authentic Asian restaurants with harried employees for whom English isn't a first language. They did their job - taking my order and bringing my food in a timely manner - and it didn't bother me that they weren't solicitous during my visit. I'll take "we're really busy but we get the job done" over "I can't believe you interrupted my conversation with my co-worker about an awesome party/boyfriend problems/etc. just because you expect me to do my job."
I plan to visit again soon, and frequently.
Okish... Food was great. Sashimi fresh and fantastic.
Service left much to be desired.
We were seated for 15 before someone can by the table and had to ask them for a beverage.
Staff never checked on how things were or offered refills, again we had to ask.
At any sushi all-u-can- eat we keep a running list of what we have ordered and had to repeatedly ask for items, including a bowl of steamed rice!
Took 2 hours for 4 of us due to really slow and terrible service.
Surprised.... We went here about 5 years ago and found it overpriced and average.
Recently they started offering an all you can eat option on the menu; so we decided to try the place again.
The food was good, the menu was sufficiently varied to meet the interests of the whole group. The service was nothing to write home about but we will for sure go back.
I especially liked the spicy salmon roll, the sushi pizza and the japanese hashbrown.
Simply awesome!. LOVE this place. Super for lunch, dinner and any time. Dim Sum is yum yum
Great Sushi. Probably Ottawa's best although different days seem better than others. Maybe due to different chefs. You NEED to try their tuna tempora roll. It's got a doughy batter around mostly raw warm tuna with a sweet sauce drizzles over it. Its amazing. The orange peel chicken is great too but it's no longer an entre :(
I've been a regular since they opened. Best sushi in Ottawa as far as I'm concerned. Tight, fresh, low on mayo (a good thing) with some of the best made classics. Try the Tuna tempora roll.. It's amazing and not replicated anywhere else I know of. Orange peel chicken is FANTASTIC if you aren't into sushi. Occasionally however, quality isnt up to par, I believe it depends on the chef. Price is steeper than some.

I agree good food but expensive unless your there at lunch on a weekday and can get a bento box.
Hit & Miss Service. The first time I visited I was in a group of 10 and the only waiter in the restaurant really messed up our orders, making some of us wait for nearly 2 hours before our plates arrived. The second time I was there for dinner before catching a movie at AMC and the service was much better. Service aside, the menu is excellent: good food, lots of choices (for both the experienced and the uninitiated) and pretty food styling. If you get the chance, try the lunchtime bento - it's simply adorable.
New to Sushi. So I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to Sushi, but I've been to a handful of restaurants in the city and thoroughly enjoyed this place. The sushi was served fresh and quickly. I'm going to try a few more places but I would definately go back.
Soup for you!. Agree that this (hot'n'sour) is the best soup around. Sushi is always a bit expensive, but since it is truly an art then it makes the whole experience worthwhile!
Great Sushi!. Great Sushi, a little expensive, but worth it. The take out is not as good, as it loses something in the travel. The service is great as well. Best Hot n Sour soup around.
Having just come from the west coast, my wife and I were impressed with Sushi Kanata. On two occassions we've been (and there will be many more) the food was excellent, reasonably priced even in comparison to BC where it's easier and cheaper to get good fresh fish. And the service was outstanding - attentive and fast, even in the second instance when we happened to come in while a party of 21 was having lunch next to us. In our opinion, all things considered, we're thrilled to have a reliable, quality Japanese restaurant to go to regularly when we thought we'd left them all behind in BC. So pleased!!!
Good food, and you can order there or take out, and they deliver it for you. But if you eat there, you get a miso soup as a bonus.
Excellent sushi & great overall service - get Sushi Kanata or Ottawa combo for a good variety with most fresh types. Great bento lunch also and fantastic Orange Chicken & baked scallops with California rolls. Just adjuster prices to be more competitive but still greeat food!
Sushi Kanata doesn't serve the finest sushi in town, but it is consistent and fresh.
