We often have guests and we always take them here for an ice cream treat. Kids especially love coming in and trying all the flavours and enjoying a cone on their patio .....
I love the Merry Dairy. They have the best ice cream sandwiches EVER! I wish they made the ginger cooking and peach ice cream option more often is my only complaint.
A great truck and now a great store located in Hintonburg. And with free parking to boot. Have enjoyed many of their flavours over the past year!
Arguably the best ice cream in Ottawa. The service is good, the people are friendly, most important the ice-cream flavors and taste is surreal. So good. I wish they would expand so there's more seating!
It was our second time at the merry dairy and again it did not disappoint. Great frozen custard, and friendly , cheerful service. We will be back for some of the vanilla lavender or egg nog flavors
Delightful little place, nice fresh colours, seats along the window, and a couple of tables outside. A good selection of flavours. I had two scoops: salted caramel, which was delicious with a very smooth texture; and ginger, which was dazzlingly outstanding, with lots of candied ginger in it, and a firmer texture than the caramel. Everyone is pleasant and friendly, and clearly enthusiastic about their product, as well they might be. Excellent value, too.
Entirely satisfying dessert. A pleasant change from gelato and ice cream, both of which are readily available in Ottawa and sometimes have a little less character than this frozen custard. I have not had frozen custard in decades; this version was firm, with good texture in the mouth on first taste and yet pleasantly smooth as the melt began. In fact, I usually like to savour gelato...but this frozen custard in a cone did not last long. I devoured it and wondered soon after what had happened; it was that good. A nice discovery during West Fest.

Does frozen custard tastes like ice cream? If you can spot the subtle differences, then yes! Frozen custard differs slightly from ice cream as it contains eggs in addition to sugar. In culinary term, crème anglaise is the basis of a frozen custard.
I had the chocolate frozen custard at Merry Dairy at Westfest. It is rich, creamy and delicious. The best in the city!
What can one say about homemade frozen custard? Made by a person who knows her stuff and serves it from a mobile truck to hoards of fans no less? Ultimately it comes down to this: (1) this is what ice cream should taste like all of the time and (2) everything else is inferior. The Merry Dairy is serving up cones of heavenly deliciousness. And although the truck seems to be everywhere I am (I had a very tart and zesty lime popsicle last time) fans can track it via the website in case they wanted to plan an accidental meeting. (Which I totally recommend.)
Tasty custard. I just wish they were around more often :)
Today my wife and I were fortunate to be invited to the 13th Annual Corn Roast at Balena Park hosted by Ottawa City Councillor Peter Hume . As part of the festivities there was served Hamburgers, hot dogs, potato chips and pop. This, of course, had to be followed up by a dessert! Dessert was supplied by local food truck The Merry Dairy . At the corn roast the truck is contracted to hand out their traditional fresh vanilla frozen custard with rainbow colour sprinkles only so there was no need to order. The truck had 2 employees dishing up the cones to waiting families including excited kids. The team of two moved pretty steadily through the line without any noticeable hiccups. The ice custard was pretty rich quality tasting. Standard sprinkles were had and the cone was average from any truck. But the custard is a lot better than the standard soft serve found on most trucks. Overall, the Merry Dairy has quite a good concept going. Locatable from it's website on a daily basis as it
In Ottawa the only way to get your frozen custard fix is by tracking The Merry Dairy truck (yes, I said truck) using the Google Latitude powered Track the Truck feature on the website.
