It was the best of the best. Our service was amazingly above and beyond. Mike is amazing,friendly and overall personable! We will definitely be back just for the service alone, the food was an added bonus! Delicious!!! The freshest oysters around! Mouth watering!!!! Would recommend this place in a heart beat!!!
Love this place. Super fresh oysters and great staff. And don't be fooled by the deceptive list of typical bar food on the menu - this is 5 star, drooling good eats.

The food to the bar to the scenery... wow.... what a great spot! Took a few spins on the dance floor with a couple of Tinderellas and then did something I have never done before: I took a cab home. Just my luck I sailed through a police ride check because I was in a cab and got home safely. Only issue now is I have no idea what I am going to do with this cab which is now sitting in my garage!

Great food. Service was excellent. I was staying st a hotel downtown and came in for dinner, sat at the bar. Tuna toast to start, followed by the mussels. Both were excellent. I'll be back.
Don't judge a book by its cover. BEST lunch ever at the Elmdale Tavern. Mmm fresh chowder, fish & chips & yummiest smoked coleslaw. Also, amazingly awesome and entertaining service.

Fine dining in a tavern? Yep! Words cannot describe the clam chowder. Large serving absolutely delicious. Mackeral was a nice surprise. Oysters were great with 8 sauce selection. This unchanged pub has you giddy with wonder as you find many pieces on the wall of its history. Minutes from downtown it is a must if travelling to Ottawa.

Oysters were fresh, if a bit slow to make it to the table, but they were packed in a Thursday night. Cocktail sauce thick, pepper sauce hot hot, mignonette balanced. Drinks were great and service was too. Laid back as can be so wear what you're comfortable in. Perfect for beers and snacks late night. Meatballs, fish and chips, tuna on toast. Escargot were heaped high with cheese piled on top definitely worth the money and a nice surprise when you usually see six little guys each in their little pocket with a sprinkle of cheese garnish.

$160 for two with oysters drinks mains and tip. So $60 without oysters and we drank doubles. Not too shabby!
I love the 70s vibe at this place. Note: it's the original 70s decor! My top pick for fish and chips in town. I like the coleslaw because it's unusual yet delicious. The fries are perfect but most of all they know fish!
A great and unexpected find. The bread is amazing and the food well prepared and presented in a rustic tavern setting. The coconut curried mussels are a different twist on a classic.

We were two couples and went in with anticipation of a pleasant evening. There was a 3 piece jazz combo and that was good. We were seated and then neglected for long periods, while the waitress and others hovered around a few tables....when she did find time to serve us, it was with her best duty face. Like a lot of restaurants in Ottawa and specially the so called trendy areas: good in parts..a vegetable dish was over salty; the mussels indifferent and the Fish n Chips...the oysters were fine but served poorly..no real explanation of names and at more than 3 dollars per oyster, it may be have merited some intro. We felt that the staff and managers were serving a private party and we were just some inconvenient guests...so Ottawa that the owner of the place hunkers down with some high rollers at one table and does not even deign to look or welcome the others, who are actually paying to eat at his establishment. Now if he was doing his Xmas dinner for the Sally Ann, and we his guests that would not be a problem as we would be soooo grateful to be out of the cold and eating his cut price Turkey, but alas, we were punters, old ones to be sure but paying to eat there...Anyway, it reminds me why we travel to Montreal, Vancouver, NYC to eat out and when here , we stay home going to places that we know -- because we will not be patronized to eat indifferent food served poorly...with no weclome ...Sayanora....
We held our sales and marketing dinner retreat, at Elmdale Oyster House & Tavern and had the absolute best time. The Chef's 4 course meal was beautiful, delicious, creative, generous and out of this world! Unanimously, the best meal any of us every had, and, we are all “foodies”. Each course was better than the next with the porkbelly/prawn being the absolute grand finale! We are still talking about it and salivating. The talented Chuck Karn Band and our Indian Summer heat added to the Elmdale/Hintonburg atmosphere. Peter (extraordinary owner, business man, and foodie) Mike (Talented Hipster Chef), Louie (Cool Sous Chef with so much style) and our server, Amanda, ("Amazing Amanda" with the great tattoos)...kudos to all of you.

Cool and Fun - Great Food. One of our favourite places in Ottawa. The atmosphere is a cool retro tavern that hasn't been too over touched. For the most part we have received excellent and fun service. We have had some great debates at the bar about Rob Ford, and there are trusty waiters who will chase you outside in the rain when you drunkenly leave your cell phone behind. For the food, oysters are always a must and are absolutely fantastic. They recently changed their cut of steak for the steak and frites: this was a good choice, and an improvement. We have also had the curried walleye dish a number of times, it is also very tasty. The menu changes enough to give good variety. Overall there is a great and fun party atmosphere. Especially when the burlesque show starts up on Fri or Sat nights.
Think your better than delicious pickled eggs? Your not. Solid oyster bar.
Go to Elmdale, drink a quart of 50 and thank me later.

Love it!. I've now been to Elmdale twice, once when it opened and recently. It takes every place a few months to get their groove going and Elmdale is no exception. But boy was it worth the wait! The food, service and ambiance have improved greatly. Looking forward to many more visits! If you're lucky to go on a Thursday or weekend night, the tavern turns into a great bar where you can keep the fun going!

Hot Beef Sammy!!. I've been going to the Elmdale for a few years now, and was concerned but hopeful when I heard that the Whalesbone had bought it. I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised at the outcome of the hard work Josh, Pete and the rest of the Elmdale staff have put into the updated version of the Tavern. I've been a few times at differing points of the day and each time the Elmdale did not disappoint! I'm not a big oyster, nor fish eater so I was happy to see other non aquatic options on the menu for a great price! And the drinks' selection and price beat out the old Tavern 150%! Now, some people swear by the smoked fish plate, the great selection of Oysters and even the pickled eggs, what makes me salvate and keeps me coming back for more is the hot beef Sammy! Jeez louise that's a tasty dish! Accurately priced at $12.00 for the sammy, salad and fries, the sammy is chalk full of amazing flavour that makes you want to lick the plate! The service is stellar, friendly, knowledgable but not overbearing. A perfect combination! May Whalesbone spearhead the Elmdale for many, many more years! Just don't ever mess with the perfection of that Hot Beef Sammy please!
Loved this meal! The best in a long time. Had finger food meal and it was heavenly. Amazing oysters, salted cheese, taster plate of beautiful house smoked fish and the pickled eggs....those soft boiled pickled eggs with home made mayo were the tastiest thing I've ever eaten. And how on earth do they stay soft boiled??? Great warm friendly service. Will go back for more

Have spent many nights getting shmammered at the OG Elmdale and was admittedly a bit trepidatious about how the transition to Oyster House would affect my desire to drink too much and make out with strangers in the bathroom. I am so relieved that the new owners have captured the essence of the Elmdale while offering an excellent, thoughtful menu with admirable ease. I made love (figuratively) to my Oyster Po' Boy Sandwich and barely fell short of licking my plate clean. The fries were super crispy and perfectly greasy and the mayo dip expertly cut the saltiness. Our server was attentive, engaging and full of charisma. Will definitely be back and highly recommend Elmdale Oyster House.
Great Oysters and Great addition to the Wellington Strip. One of my Favorite places in Ottawa was the Elmdale. Slim pickings in the hood for an honest beer and and band...so I was a bit sad to see it go. But I was pleasantly surprised to see that Whalesbone's has kept some of the history alive! Great reno and super friendly staff. They guys even kept my 5 year old amused with stories of ghosts in the basement....
Great oysters, loved the fries...just wished there was a bit more lobster in the lobster roll... but you can't always get what you want. Definitely will be back to the bar to slurp back a few.

Going to wait a little longer to go back. We went opening weekend and they admitted that they were going through growing pains which is obvious but we will wait a little longer to get sorted out. That said, the food was yummy. We had the po boy and lobster roll and the Po Boy was superb the Lobster Roll was a let down, it was kind of tasty but a pretty anorexix lobster roll. Being from the east coast, I am used to seeing them plumper....like an East Coast version of the Po Boy. All we could taste was the bread (which was yummy) which saddened us as we were looking forward to the Lobster. Drink wise, maybe they extended the menu but I had a Dark and Stormy and well they made it with Appleton Rum...so a light and stormy? Maybe its a nod to the previous establishment but the glasses looked like they were from the dollar store, so I switched to white wine quickly. The Oysters rocked, of course. All in all it was good, we definitely plan to go back, just maybe needs some time to shake off the cobwebs and we are looking forward to those oyster poboys :-)
Elmdale oyster house & tavern. Lovely atmosphere, delicious caesars. Our server was great, attentive and not too overbearing. wasn't starving, ordered the curry mussels and some oysters all of which were lovely.
Ready to go back. Enjoyed lunch with friends there today. Great job with the renos and liked the ambiance. Oysters, lobster roll, clamghetti and po boy all good, as were fries and the spicy slaw. Fish n chips fish just average, just ver bland and not enough tartar and just no bite to the tartar, too much dill as well. Ice cream sundae was also average, just way too sweet and not interesting enough. Service was good, but there were very few tables and no one bothered to help with the stroller since it is not wheelchair accessible. Looking forward togoing back!
Excellent lunch here recently! Fried smoked oyster sandwich was delicious as was the chowder. Spicy slaw was terrific . They've done an awesome job upgrading the old Elmdale but still maintaining its charm. Can't wait to get back there.
