Review Hollands Cake And Shake - Ottawa

Amazing customer service and even better cakes! The red velvet cake was sooo good. I liked the size because it didn’t feel like I was consuming something overly sweet. The macaron on top was a great texture, and perfectly bite sized. I’m sad this place will be closing because it clearly still has a lot of love from customers. My friend got the malted chocolate. She’s not a huge sweets fan but she enjoyed it!

Amazing for ready-made, ever-changing varieties of cakes and hot/cold sandwiches on house-made bread, soft serve ice cream, local sodas, and of course custom cakes (order ahead)! They generally sell out sandwiches and sometimes small cakes quickly by early afternoon, so arrive early!

What a delicious treat! The size of the cakes are just right and the tastes are amazing. It’s a shame that they’re closing, but I support their decision! Come grab a cake or sandwich before they close because they’re worth it.

Fantastic sandwiches and great cakes. I forget my lunch at home on purpose to come here, except on Mondays of course.

I tried the "overload" which is a shake topped with a mini cake, a cookie, brownie and a sparkler which was very impressive looking. I especially love the mini cakes that change weekly.

Very tasty sandwiches and cakes! Looking forward to trying a shake (and maybe a float) next time I visit. Staff were pleasant and helpful.

Um ok. I just had what can only be described as my dream sandwich, but not even I knew that it could exist. Fresh bread, hot - but not overwhelmingly hot - BBQ *cauliflower* wings, potato chips, all of the dreamy sauces - and they even had a white chocolate cookie on today to boot. It's like they literally crawled into my brain and created my ideal lunch and I'm super stoked on that, great Friday. Best sandwich in town, along with great smiling service and very quick prep time. I've been many times before but their vegetarian option this time just blew my mind - thus further solidifying my love for their food. 10/10, cool.

This place is amazing! Follow them on Facebook for menu updates as the cake, ice cream and sandwich options change all the time! We went lots this summer for various kinds of soft serve and then again the other day for the pumpkin spice ice cream! It was delicious. One of the things I love about this place is that the ice cream actually tastes like the fruit they are serving rather then like sugar and chemicals!

I tried the Valentine's box from Holland's cake and shake. Their shop is cute and the staff was super friendly and organized and they get a bonus for the fact that they packaged this box perfectly so nothing got ruined while being carried. But, unfortunately, the most important part - how everything tasted - wasn't great. I found almost everything I tried (cookies, brownie, mini cakes, etc.) to be a bit too sweet which took away from otherwise good/interesting treats. The idea behind the box is awesome and it had a great amount of variety and was ultimately fun to try. But for the price and the reputation of this place, I was expecting better. Ultimately though, I still intend to go back.

We had a workshop and this was ordered for us. We got the bag lunches option. I decided to try the turkey sandwich. Delicious!!! The bread was amazing. I’ll be heading to the shop to have my husband try it!

Complete and total disregard for the severity of food allergies. I'll be taking my business to those who give a damn about ingredients and aren't ignorant to food allergies. Terrible.

Holland's Cake & Shake is located in mechanicsville near the Carleton Tavern. I work at tunney's pasture and my friend recommended this place to me for lunch. Little did I know that a cakery/shakery(?) would actually serve up a decent sandwich for lunch. The menu changes twice per week and is usually limited to 2 sandwich choices which come with a drink and your choice of cookie or brownie. For a couple of bucks, you can upgrade your drink to a milkshake, highly recommended. The shakes here are awesome, though the straws they use are too narrow which makes them a bit challenging to drink. The sandwiches are decent but nothing special. Baked stuff is good and always fresh. Never tried the eponymous cakes but I'm sure I'll lose my discipline someday.

So glad I went back. Excellent lunch, had the ham sandwich with delightful twist. Fresh bread with tasty, plentiful and fun ingredients, like shaved asparagus and chips. The brownies here remain the BEST! in this city. Overall great value for what you are getting... really food to eat.

So good. Tried the coffee crisp shake & the sticky toffee shake. Both are great. Had the cold sandwich brown bag lunch with the shake upgrade. Totally worth it. The Mexican chocolate cookies were pretty fresh & yummy. The sandwich was fantastic tortilla chips really made it.

Had pumpkin pie! Tasted really good! But not having a plate underneath it took away from the experience. I get the whole minimalism concept, but I think it's a good idea for a restaurant to invest in some plates and metal cutlery for customers!

This place is Ottawa's "Suzy Q Doughnuts" of cake shops. Clever and photogenic product, but a bit of a gamble from a flavour perspective. A gamble I'm likely going to keep taking!

Everything they create it awesome. The little cakes are soooo creative every week and also delicious. I don't know how they keep coming up with so many cool ideas. All summer they've been doing different soft serve ice creams with fresh fruit from the market (blueberries, peach, strawberries, etc.) and we go down every Saturday to try to latest flavour. They never disappoint. Their sandwiches are great as well. BUT they have brutal hours. Shakes and ice cream only available until 5pm all summer?!

I have had some very delicious things at Holland's Cake and Shake, and I've yet to be disappointed. The tiny cakes are the perfect frosting-to-cake ratio (this is very important) and super fresh and moist. (Dry cake is one of the World's Most Tragic Things.) They're really unique too, and are often topped with candy or cereal. Froot Loops make a frequent appearance here.

Good to know: there is a regular rotating menu of lunch items - sandwiches, salads etc. - that may offset too much cake consumption. The coffee is good too.

Had the Italian sandwich and a coffee crisp shake, really good great service and a decent price

Loved it!. I will definitely be back. I had a 'cake shake,' and it rocked my world. The girl working the cash was not super friendly, but everyone has their days :). I'll be back!

Delicious!. I saw the owner on the Food Network's Donut Showdown and decided to stop by. I tried their homemade cinnamon ice cream and some chocolate treats and they were delicious. Definitely worth stopping by!

Chocolate Milk Shake Was DOPE. As the title says, that milk shake was dope-errific. It was delicious, smooth, chocolate goodness on a sweet summer day. Only been once but I intend on coming back for more shakes and possible cakes.

Sugar. White sugar, in excess. Not subtle, not refined, almost artificial flavoring. A baker like Betty Crocker is a baker. I hate to be so harsh, but there are so many nearby choices that are all a far better bet.

Disappointment. I was ultra excited to try this place as I really want Hintonburg to have a dessert place open after 7pm. Well, sadly I'm still looking as Holland's Cake&Shake closes at 7pm the latest. So I went in the middle of the day. Bought two individual cakes (Caramel Apple and Rocket). The rocket was a coolaid-based cake and was moist and tasty but the icing was boring: it felt like eating butter and icing sugar, no flavor, no lightness. The Caramel Apple was a little bit tastier, but still nothing to blow my socks off. For 4$ a piece, I would have liked more flavor, and a better icing.
The atmosphere of the place is sad and non-existent. I wanted a charming coffee shop atmosphere to go to with friends after supper.I don't see myself going back although I should try their milkshakes.

Nutella milkshake. Their nutella milkshake is bangin'. Decadent, velvety smooth, and just the right amount of the halzenutty goodness we all know and love. This shake will most definitely be bringing all of the boys (& girls) to the yard.

Like it!. Really, really enjoyed the coconut cream pie. Super coconutty, without it being overly sweet. My partner had the marble cake and a chocolate shake. Cake was moist, icing was AWESOME. Milkshake was tasty too.

I want this place to be better. I had high hopes when I first heard about Cake & Shake. My first attempt I ordered two cakes - chocolate and raspberry shortcake with my boyfriend. While they were moist and fresh, their flavour was lacking and reminded us of a box cake. I thought maybe they were so moist that when blended into the shake you would get a great cake taste. However I was wrong. I re-visited their shop today and ordered the aforementioned cake & shake. I chose a marble cake in a chocolate milkshake. The milkshake tasted like chocolate milk mixed with a sara lee cake. I expected chunks of cake but rather it was blended down too far. At such a high cost almost $7.00 I was quite disappointed. I may be tempted to try their brown bag lunches and muffins, but we shall see.

Worth a visit.... We had the chocolate cream pie, the apple cinnamon cake and the chocolate shake. The chocolate cream pie was delicious, not too sweet and great pastry. The apple cinnamon pie had lovely tart apple sauce in the middle. The milkshake was a proper milkshake! Compared to other dessert places where you would pay $17 for a dessert and a coffee, this place is also good value for money (we paid $17 for two desserts, milkshake and a coffee). All this to say, worth a visit.

Delicious Cakes & Amazing Milkshake. I had the chocolate cake-cake shake and then came back for the berry cake the next week! I love that the menu changes weekly!!! I've gone every week since they opened and have not tired of their creative selection of scrumptious mini cakes, ice creams, and the ultimate brownie.

Amazing homemade sandwiches, a delicious Cobb salad and reasonably prices cakes and shakes. Have been here 3 times and enjoyed all the sandwiches and the cakes. This weeks peach soft serve was AMAZING!!!
Bake And Be Merry
These cakes are perfect for sharing. We had another couple over for birthday dinner, and each person had a cake set down in front of them. We each had a knife, which we used to cut the cutest slices, and then we passed the plate to the right for the next cake until all four cakes were gone. Delicious fun!
