Review Fil's Diner - Ottawa

Marc Gagnon
Fil’s is a neighbourhood institution. Nestled in between the bowling alley and O’Connell’s Irish Pub, this retro feeling restaurant serves a no frills breakfast. I appreciate the breakfast bar, an opportunity to relax, read the news and enjoy a simple and straightforward breakfast. The service is friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere welcoming. A great spot!

Was my first time at Fil's but the waitress that took my order was very pleasant and she didn't charge me for my tea! Food was great especially the home fries. I got the steak and egg breakfast. My only complaint was the steak was slightly more cooked than I asked but other than that it was great. Will definitely be back!

Good food. Good prices. Excellent staff. Bar next door is connected. Great place to grab and go or stop and chill.

This is a diamond in the rough. Attached to a bowling alley and a pub, you wouldn't necessarily think to come here for breakfast. When you come in there upholstery seems to be worn (probably from sanitizer as a lot of it looked new). We came for breakfast/brunch on the weekend, the service was quick, the food was served quick, and it was more affordable than every other spot we've tried as of late. If you want quick, easy, and affordable breakfast, I don't think you'll be disappointed here.

One of the best breakfast spots I've found in Ottawa. Honestly the best homefries I've ever had. Biggest beef with the place is that the waitstaff seriously need some help. One server isn't enough for a breakfast/lunch rush and things get missed because of this. Otherwise no complaints

A while back, went in with a group. Ordered a milkshake and food. After drinking half of the milkshake, I noticed something in the cup. There was a used individual butter cup, with the paper top still attached, in my milkshake. Garbage from another customer. They apologized and took the milkshake off of my bill but still charged me for the order of fries. So… thanks for not billing me for the milkshake with garbage in it?

It's was very good and light breakfast 😋 Stephanie served me and she was delightful 😊

I have only been here for breakfast and I must say their Fil's wake up call (basic 2 eggs, hashbrowns, toast and sausage) for 7.50 is a good dish! The hashbrowns are great here and the rest is all pretty good. I have found that later on a Sunday when more locals come in the service is a bit more slack with less frequent check-ins.

I don't know why this place gets so many negative reviews. We go here basically every other weekend and have never had any issues. Food is great, exactly what you would expect from a diner. Servers are friendly. I always get scrambled, sausage with rye toast and always plenty of coffee. The decor is always pretty cool. Bright colours, comic book characters.

I used to visit this place frequently and really liked it, especially for their all-day breakfast. The last time I went, I very politely told the waitress that there were a few strands of thick, black hair in my wrap (I have blond hair). I rarely complain about anything at restaurants. I know a lot of people who are, in reality, quite whiney, say that, but I actually, 99% of the time, am very hesistant to complain. On this particular occasion, I was repulsed by sight of the hair and was encouraged by a friend who was dining with me to say something about it. The response I got was 'we don't have any staff with black hair.' That's it. I admit I should have persisted, but I just didn't eat the thing and I never went back. It was just one crappy experience among many pleasant ones, but every time I walk by that place, I think of that thick, black hair and the sensation of revulsion is enough to make me keep on walking. If it weren't for that one time, I'd say this place was great, but then I read some reviews on here about the customer service and I think maybe my experience wasn't so unique. If the waitress had just apologized and given me another wrap, I probably would have went back. I know mistakes happen, but the combination of grossness and crappy customer service was enough to turn me off forever.

Best breakfast spot in town. I have been going there quite often for the past three years since we stumbled in after our car broke down just down the street. They have great staff that are often overworked but do their very best. They are kind and friendly. The breakfast is the best in town but much better on the weekends as opposed to the weekdays. I would recommend this place to anyone.

After our car broke down and had to be towed, our breakfast plans changed and we ended up at Fil's Diner because they serve breakfast until 3 every day, which was a good decision. The atmosphere was retro (the good kind of retro) and they have a typical diner menu. The server was very enthusiastic and happy.

Non pretentious diner. I've been going to Fils for years and find it has something others lack - consistency. The eggs are really good - the yolks have flavour that the others don't have. The bacon is delicious and cooked right most of the time although sometimes they scrimp on how much you get.
The toast is cooked well and buttered right. The shakes are amazing. What I love is that you can walk into any diner in Westboro and find pretentious people who love to pretend they care about where they are eating and what they are eating. At Fils it's regular people from all over Ottawa who know the food is just good. Yes there are some strange characters that come in for bfast but that is the right anyone has as a paying customer. It gives Fils more character and less pretense. I find people watching at Fils one of the good things about it.

Horrible service or lack thereof. We went for breakfast. After standing around for 10 min waiting for someone to seat us, we realized none of the tables that were vacant were clean. We talked to a waiter with lots of attitude who seemed to have no time for us. We waited another 5 min and another waiter had taken problem with where we were standing so she decided to kick a chair in- it was pretty dramatic. Overall we will never return. It is attached to a rough looking bar- major turn off. I guess we're glad we didn't eat there anyways.

NEVER GO HERE!!!

Good Diner Expereince. We went last Sunday for breakfast. The diner was mostly blue hairs and a few young families, and it was a good atmosphere. The service was quick and friendly, and we were quickly served coffee after being seated. We both order breakfast selections. The food was tasty, pretty typical diner breakfast, but not too greasy, and the breakfast sausages were good, much better than are usually found on diner breakfast plates. The price was good. Not the ultra cheap pub weekend breakfast special, but two of us ate for under 20$. I look forward to going back to try out some of the lunch selections.

The place looks and feels like a 50's diner. Employees were pretty good, service of drinks and food was a good speed. The taste of the food (had breakfast) was pretty good. My only complaint was the price, it ruined everything. $7.99 for breakfast (french toast, eggs, sausage and bacon) plus $4 for "large" orange juice and $1.75 for toast, white toast. What place charges for white toaster??

Horrible, just HORRIBLE. The place was horrible,
to the dirty old building and the low class losers inside to the high prices and bad food. everything was bad.
dont waste your time or money stay away.

Between the nasty old grease smell in the air...and the owners denegrating remarks to staff in front of guests...a sad experience.

Fine Little Place for Breakfast.. I can't believe the nasty reviews, so I figured I'd better write something. Fil's is a diner - just what you'd expect. Quick service, decent breakfast, fair prices. duh!
If you arrive after 8:30 on a weekend, be prepared to wait in line because they only have a dozen or so booths and a couple of tables. There is a booth for six and could squeeze in eight if you meet your friends. My husband and I used to go to the Newport, and that is fine, but this place has quicker service, better lighting, and the coffee is just fine. I can't comment on the other meals - just been there for breakfast.

Goodbye Fil's. Certainly overpriced and skimpy portions.
Service is horrible. Certainly won't bring you back
to the goold old fifties. I could do better in my own kitchen!

I miss this place.. I worked in the Kitchen for a good 10 months...And I loved it.COOLEST place I have EVER worked at. But it was VERY hard work...If the food is made with LOVE by the right person, it has the potential to be the most delicious diner food. The pub is also amazing...I miss having a beer at the end of my night shift.... I'll never forget this place, it gave me so much experience...wish i wouldn't have quit like I did..

Awful food, awful service, racist customers. Food is not good and too expensive for what you get. Atmosphere horrible. Smells of dirty grease.
Owner rude and unhelpful in an emergency situation...very disappointed that this place is a part of our community.

Better ask for your coffee or you get none!. Waitress never even offered coffee, She explained that you have to ask for it. gee coffee with breakfast? What was i thinking? Cooks don't wear hats, They wear shorts! Use their hands to handle food, Your eggs are pushed off the spatula with bare hands. Not impressed. Staff in the kitchen change all the time. Food is greasy. Service bad. Waited 20 minutes for a breakfast. Worst thing was the eggs are under cooked. If the yolk moves when you move your plate the egg white is not cooked. Never again!

Homey. As a Fil's regular I can sympathize with all points of view expressed. I've had some pretty bad service and some pretty bad meals there but by and large it does very well and the value is good. The kitchen staff turnover seems to be pretty high so the consistency is a challenge.

The core wait staff have been there for a while and for the most part they are attentive and friendly. They can be distracted when the rush hits as it sometimes does with a fury.

Waited over20 minutes for waitress to barely clean the table, another 10 for her to take breakfast order and food was nothing to talk about. Felt like waitress (rose) only catered to the regular customers . Will not be back

It is what it is. Fil's is a hit or miss experience - but with more misses. There are a couple of good waiting staff, but generally service is mediocre at best and dismissive at its worst. There is nothing in the direct vicinity that is close to the type of food served by Fil's. As a result, the menu is tired and uninspired and the quality of the experience has not been challenged. I'm looking forward to Nate's moving into the neighbourhood so that this diamond in the rough is forced to pick up their game.

Sat at a dirty table for 10 minutes, waited 10 more for menus (a rude waitress barely cleaned the table and gave us 2 menus for 3 adults--not because there was a shortage.) It was 40+ minutes before we got food, which was not worth the wait. During all that time, we saw nearly every other table in sight getting terrible service, too.

The waitress had assured us that the omelets were made with green onions. They were made with yellow onions, and the "cheddar" in the omelet was a cheap processed-cheese slice. The eggs Benedict were poached hard/solid.

The restaurant was nauseatingly hot, disorganized, inefficient. This was an awful experience, and I'd not consider eating there again.

Food wasn't anything special. If you want a really good greasy spoon breakfast go to meadows on Preston. Tyrades & Testimonials by Cracker & Thr33

50's style diner atmosphere, great service and even an attached bowling alley. This spot is right in the thick of things in Wellington Village, on warmer days the front I the restaurant opens up (garage door style). A good place to become a 'regular' and enjoy some American style food with an ice cream float.

It was our good friend Garey’s nth birthday last week and since we were unable to get together on the actual evening, we decided to go to breakfast together on Saturday morning instead. Garey picked Fil’s diner on Wellington in the Parkdale Market area in
