Thank you HPH for an awesome meal. We came in starving and really hangry from an awful experience at 10fourteen. Kevin and staff took care of us and fed us the most delicious food. Thank you for the great meal and excellent service!
We dropped in on a whim and were astounded. First clue that it is good is when it has an almost full house on a week night. Service was prompt well versed in the food and beverage selection and had a friendly bubbly personality. The food was top notch in presentation and taste. While it might be a bit out of the way for us we will make the effort to go back again and again.
The food was excellent. I ordered the hph burger and the onions jam was out of this world!!! I highly recommend it!
Great little spot that has great food!!! The waiter we had (Kevin) was excellent. Very attentive and very helpful. Menu is small but everything on it is great!!! Particularly love the HPH burgers!!!!
Excellent food, great service and such a pleasant and cozy atmosphere. Your fish and chips is unrivalled. Delicious, generous portion and service is quick. Thank you!
Very chill & welcoming environment. Enjoyed the art, and the bartender on Sunday night was engaging and fun! Cheers
Excellent burger and great selection of craft beer!!!!
Best fish & chips! Relaxed vibe. Friendly service. Perfect spot to linger at the bar with friends, family or solo.
Loved the Brown Van Koelsch. Fish and chips were delicious and the hamburger and grilled cheese that my friends ate were great.
Thank you, love the sauces on the fish and fries, coleslaw.
Not the best food I've ever tried, but the service was very good and the wine list as well. I hope the staff will improve the situation with the food quality.
Very nice place with quirky decor and art work. Portions don't look big but they are filling, especially the potato hash and the burgers. I find that they sprinkled too much salt on their fries. Their menu items have some pretty fancy name, the food is good but nothing spectacular. Service is friendly but a bit slow even when the place isn't crowded.
It offers quirky and sometimes edgy art, local beer, along with a selection of wine and food. The casual atmosphere is a good spot to grab a drink and snacks. Everytime I've gone there has been no wait to get a table, which was nice.
Great atmosphere in this hipster, trendy bistro type restaurant, in an up and coming neighborhood. Great, great gourmet burgers, although for the price, they are on the smallish side of the scale. I had the fish and chips tonight, it was very good; not award winning good, but certainly very enjoyable, with a great batter. They have local beers, which is awesome for beer lovers! Overall very very enjoyable, a tad too expensive for what it is (but hey, everyone's getting too expensive for what they are!)...
Hintonburg Public House is all about the atmosphere and the fun beer list. The food is ok. I had the fish & chips, which were bellow average IMO. We don't go there for the food anyways. Like I said, it's all about the the atmosphere and the fun beer list!
Good food and great drinks Big group was mostly happy but two were surprised that the burgers were not as super as they expected. Nice service. Nice location. Great community feel. Need to repeat the visit to check dinner options. Nice lunch place.
Great place. Great people.. This is a terrific place to go if you're looking for somewhere to have drinks in Wellington West/Hintonburgh. The place is cozy and the staff are amazing. They support local artists, brewers and farmers and are a great addition to the neighbourhood. Try out their red wine Caesar if you're looking for something a bit different.
Warm House on a Cold Night. We recently took a chance and stopped in for a beer as "Beyond The Pale" is a partner and Pink Fuzz is a great beer. The staff are very friendly and open, great ambiance with retro decor and local art displays. Food was very good with small portions for the $$$. Burger was almost slider size, however it was delicious. We will go back if in the area. Thanks for a great night. Cheers.
Tasty apps and a wonderful selection of beers on tap. Prices were all reasonable and the atmosphere was really conducive to a nice evening out.
Vegan options and local brew. Love the HPH, the staff is always happy to offer up suggestions for meals and make little changes if necessary for dietary restrictions, which I love. The vegetarian burger is really great! Love their support of local IPAs and the overall atmosphere of the place. The decor is eclectic and fun. Love how they support local artists with artwork up on their walls. It's a great restaurant in a growing neck of the woods!
We went to the HPH for Sunday Brunch, luckily it wasn't too busy. W both enjoyed out meals. I had the burger and fries. Great flavour in the burger and the fries were perfect. My wife had the Hash. She said the eggs were great and added a nice creamy texture to the hash. She wished she had more. I would defintely recommend and return
Cozy atmosphere. Although the prices are on the high side, the ambiance and friendly staff make up for it. Food is mediocre. Great place to kick back with friends over a beer or bottle of wine.
Great beer, knowledgable staff. Was in sat night for drinks and a quick bite with some friends; the waiter was funny, friendly and efficient, and all the grub was excellently prepared. I'll be back.
Great beers on tap, friendly staff. Always enjoy this place.
The menu is creative and tasty. The service is great and I never feel rushed!
Hintonburg pub trivia. My girlfriend, her parents & I went for dinner at the Hintonburg pub last night and randomly got asked to participate in their trivia night! I'm not sure if this is a usual Sunday thing that they run ( this was our first time there). But it was really fun!
The food was delicious. I would like to say that we all tried different things but that's not the case. 4 fish and chips and 4 pints of pink fuzz and we all left satisfied and full! I'm not sure what they put on their cheese curds but they are crazy good.
Our waitress who's name escapes me (Anne maybe?) Was very attentive and helpful. None of us were familiar with their draft beers (except beaus of course) but her recommendation of the pink fuzz we drank was spot on!
Looking forward to trying more of their food and drinks!
Hintonburg thank you for catering to my picky taste!
See you soon!
Yum!!. Super tasty burger
HPH = therapy. The HPH is a lovely escape from my hum-drum routine and boring-schmoring suburban life. When I'm feeling particularly chatty or social I sit at the bar - have even shed a few tears there after a good row with the hubby. If I'm feeling reclusive and just want to disappear with my book, I tuck into one of the tables, order one of the thoughtful brews and escape. The decor makes me want to rush home and re-decorate. It has a really cozy, quirky, vintage feel without the smell of mothballs or that horrible air-freshner/febreeze thing Value Village has going on, and is still fresh and inviting. The staff was in heavy rotation for the first year - and for good reason - there were a few servers who obviously didn't give a hoot about their workplace, took advantage of the owner (from what I've heard in the rumour mill) and sometimes treated customers like an inconvenience. The last few times I've been to this place the staff have been beyond wonderful and the vibe is really positive and happy but still laid-back. I have enjoyed many things from the menu and I think my favourite is the vegetarian cabbage rolls. This dish is a really fresh, unique veggie option that will rock your socks off. The HPH is a huge supporter of, participant in and organizer of community and fundraising events in Hintonburg and there seems to always be something fun and interesting happening there in support of this enviable community. The artwork changes often, is picked by someone who has a great eye (I'm assuming the owner) and is always well curated. I know that Hintonburg has (cough cough) gentrified over the years but I didn't realize that came with such a huge sense of entitlement from clients and customers. It also seems super passive-aggressive to have an issue with a business and sneak off to vent about it via a keyboard - why not speak to the staff or owner directly to try to resolve the issue? Personally, I can't wait to squeal my wheels out of suburbia and park my butt on one of those cute vintage chairs for a good pint, good bite and good chat.
Great brunch, great atmosphere. will definitely come back
Dinner with the Fam. Had a late dinner with family last night at the HPH. First time there - great relaxed feel, friendly staff and good food. We started with their house fries and potato chips to share - both were very good. For mains, I had a pork chop and everyone else had the burger. Its easy to overcook a pork chop and have it come out dry, just ask ... me. Anyway, the HPH chop was moist, tender and delicious. The burger was excellent and, happily, not over cooked as seems to be the practice in many places. We will definitely go back.
I really, really liked this place. The noise is overwhelming sometime and we tend to come in and if it is too noisy we leave.
I ate here all the time before I found out I was celiac.
Wish there were some Gluten free options or the ability to alter an order so I could eat there.
Decent. This restaurant screams "hipster" although the clientele range in ages and styles.
The serving staff are pretty cold. The service is okay but they definitely don't believe in "serving with a smile" and chit chat. If you order a water to start, you'll get a dirty look and a glass that holds maybe 3oz.
The prices are high, but the food is pretty good. I would recommend their burger and the deconstructed nutella dessert. They serve local microbrews too which is a plus.
On busy days it is hard to get in with a big group and there is nowhere to wait inside, so I'd skip it as a last minute after work place or call ahead and make a reservation.
Great spot, could use noise-catching panels. I like the feel of this resto - rustic, eccentric, cozy. I've also really liked the food. The bibb salad is incredible. The battered fish is a bit too fatty for my taste, and I wish there was more greenery with that dish. The service has been very solid on each visit. The only issue I have with this restaurant is sound...it is very, very loud (trebly) in there, and I think it could be solved by putting some sound catching panels on the ceiling, carpets or heavy curtains. As it is, the sound just bounces off wood and metal and makes it really hard to hear the person right in front of you. That's the only drawback, because the place is a great.
Great Brunch. I've been to HPH a handful of times and though it's hit and miss for dinner the brunch menu is excellent. The French toast is particularly wonderful - probably the best I've had in Ottawa. My friend had their version of Eggs Benedict (poached eggs, peameal bacon, roti), it was delicious. Fun, kitschy and very relaxed it's a great place to hang out and have a meal. The bar snack section of the menu is fun too.
My Home Away From Home!. I'm not much of a foodie or even one to offer my opinion about restaurants, but I spend a lot of time at The Hintonburg Public House - and I wanted to share some positive thoughts about this awesome neighborhood pub. I've eaten just about everything on the menu and the food's always excellent and made each time with care - and the front of the house and the kitchen staff are always super keen to prepare it just so I like it. Now, the HPH isn't for everyone (much like any other restaurant), but it's so cool to see all ages of folks enjoying the place!
One of the things I like the most about The HPH is that it's a 'blank canvas' - and it's a comfortable place to come and hang out, eat, drink and make it your own. As they celebrate their one year anniversary, I offer my compliments to Summer the owner, Mark the Chef and all the awesome HPH staff for making it a place that I get to feel so at home!
All restaurants get good reviews and bad reviews, but when I see a restaurant consistently full of happy regulars and new faces - it means it's a place where people love spending time and enjoy supporting. Keep it going HPH!!!
66% like it?. Forget the reviews. It is a really good place for a meal and a pint or two. I wish we had a place like this on Elgin. SOoooo tired of the irish pub theme thing. I will definately go back.
I want to love it. The atmosphere and music are amazing! The drinks are also amazing! The service has been hot and miss for me, still always friendly. The crux has been the food, fries tasted like fish, fish tasted like fries, cheese plates although tasty are lacking the diverse ingredients I would expect and appreciate (like at Moon Room a few min walk away). I think if they put a little more work into their kitchen and food production Hintonburg will have one classy and well rounded joint.
It's my 'local' and I will continue to go there regularly, just after i've had dinner.
Tasty food!. My wife and went here today after standing in a line for a little too long at the beer festival... I had the pulled bacon (more like pulled pork) sandwich with apple slaw on it and a bibb salad (large leafy greens). This was probably the best pulled pork sandwich I've had! I'm not normally a big fan of pulled pork but decided to give this a go. It had a nice tangy sauce, tart apple slaw and nice bun that was touched lightly on the grill. The salad was also very good, nice thick leafy greens and light dressing. Very nice!
My wife had the burger which she said was up there with the better burgers she had had. I don't eat beef so I can't really comment more beyond that. I did however eat my share of her fries which were very tasty as well.
Was crazy busy when we were there and our server was slammed but he was still able to take our order, get our food and check back with us in a timely matter. Will definitely be back here.
Random Stop. Mistook this place for hintonburger, who I heard had great burgers (although, I've been told otherwise by a friend). I went in expecting a burger specialized menu. Instead, I was greeted with a laid back atmosphere and rustic style. Everything, from the furniture to the cutlery and plates, were all mismatched. Although it looked like everything was bought at a garage sale, I was happy to see that everything was clean. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, the eclectic art and even the waiter's style fit into the environment. Our waiter was friendly enough, but felt slightly distant.
The menu appeared to be a little limited, but had some interesting choices from your regular fish and chips, burgers, to duck and other fish dishes. Prices were average for what they offered. They seemed to specialize mostly in the appetizers and snacks. Unfortunately, I'm not an experience foodie so a lot of the vernacular was lost on me. As a result, I was hesitant to try anything in case I didn't get my money's worth.
I tried a picked egg which had a sharp and well spiced flavour. I very much enjoyed it. I also tried the trout with chickpeas, kale and yogurt. The trout was beautifully seared and absolutely delicious. However, it wasn't very seasoned and the rest of the dish felt a bit bland. My companions all took the burger (playing it safe). Strangely, out of three, only one had a big chunk of what looked like a pork chop added to the the burger. I got to take a few bites out of the burger, which was fairly good, but the patty felt a little dry. One of the patties was very crumbly and a little messy to and my other two friends seemed to handle their burgers drip free. A friend commented that the fries were a little salty and the ketchup seemed homemade (less sweet and more tangy than the original).
Overall, the experience was very pleasant and I would definitely go back to try some more of their appetizers.
Ok food - funky spot. We have tried to stop in a few times when we have been in the area on the weekend but they seem to be primarily to be a brunch spot which we aren't big fans of so have always passed it by. We finally made it for lunch and entered into a place that really focuses on a decor which is definitely appreciated. Service was decent for somewhat of a fast food place - we both ordered the burger and fries and where the fries were homemade, they lacked flavor along with a pretty hefty burger that was pretty dry. I may go back/stop but not really sold on the food as it was pretty bland....
I like the food, especially the bar snacks... I'm hard pressed not to get a pickled egg and/or the marinated cheese curds each time I go. The burger is good, and they seem to change up the toppings regularly.
I also like the decor, and the rotating artwork, but I find it incredibly loud inside, and difficult to converse with my fellow diners.
Oh man.... I can't stop thinking about the burger I had at the HPH last night. I don't know about the rest of their menu, but the burger is outstanding when you want something a little more refined (for lack of a better word) than a Hintonburger. The burger was perfectly cooked and perfectly garnished - accompanied by a beer or three from the carefully selected beer list makes for a great evening.
Had lunch there today. Like the eclectic furniture and feel. The braised bacon/crackling/apple/white bean appetizer was wonderful. The combination of flavors and textures was interesting and most effective. The chicken and liver sandwich with Bibb salad was wonderful. The vegetarian Our server, Andrea, was helpful, professional, with just the right amount of attention. I do recommend.
My boyfriend and I were referred here from a friend, so we went for brunch early this afternoon. I ordered the butternut squash soup, with nuts and cider. I am a big fan of butternut squash soup, and this is by far the best I have had. The flavor was really great, and the presentation was equally pleasent. My boyfriend had ordered the scrambled eggs with some kind of smoked sausage and hash brown type of potato. Overall the place served our food in a timely manner, it was really cute and trendy inside. The prices were fair, and the food was fresh. We will definitely be back.
Perfect. Sunday afternoon we stopped into Whispers in Westboro, and we just had a feeling that it wasn't going to hit the spot. Lately we were feeling unimpressed with some of the places we'd been to from Play to Absinthe, to Urban Pear...we were looking for something to impress us...and all of these places had the old crusty feel to us...with unimpressive food choices, (as he calls it big plate little food ltos of $$$ for small and mediocre food choices) or the regular pub food was getting old as well
This place was exactly what we were needing...it was nothing short of perfect the decor was a breath of fresh air...repurposed wood, reminiscent of an old school house...from the flatware to the glasses,...it was etsy meets anthropology in a pub/bistro ...fresh, exhilierating...original...
The food...well, lets say we were so pleased with the decor and ambiance we didn't have great expectations for the menu....we have become use to being disappointed by menus that LOOK great, but are just ...well ok when its comes down to the food
In all honesty, we almost didn't even go in to this place because looking at the menu nothing seemed to jump out at us...it was really the fact that they had Camerons on tap that brought us there.
We had the marinated cheese curds to start...wonderful...just devine...simple...delicious...something we both enjoy
He had the burger with blue cheese and onion...and fries...I had the fish and fries...
We sat there mmmming and aahhhing the whole time we ate...its been so long since we've done that...
Everything was beautiful and delicious...his burger looked like it came from a magazine not too oily not too dry...the bun was fantastic...I dare say the malt vinegar we had for our (best fries ever!) was home made...
What a wonderful experience...
The server...also wonderful...he didn't kiss ass..I'm so tired of either kiss ass servers...or snooty ones...he was great...jeans and tee, and there when we needed him...
This place is for more of your late 20's or 30s crowd...stylish hipster...it was great...So glad Ottawa has a place like this...makes me fall in love with Hintonburg...I dare say places like this is going to make Hintonburg the cooler hipper younger sibling of Westboro~
Wish I could stumble home from HPH.. I'm a wannabe hipster and a wannabe HIntonburg resident. I do have dark-rimmed glasses but they are prescription (sorry to disappoint a previous reviewer) and I live in the suburbs. But I've been here twice, the first time just a week after opening and the most recent visit was last week.
Many things have been tweaked, which shows that management is not only listening but responding. The addition of a second door at the front eliminates the numbing draft at the front and stenciling on the office door dealt with the confusion between the bathrooms.
Love the decor, lack of TV screens, excellent beer selection. So wonderful to be able to watch people come and go, knowing that the doors are open until 2 AM. I will go back again and again just for the desert. Both times the chocolate whatever was outstanding. Too bad I can't wander home after having a couple of drinks, instead I have to drive back to the sports bars and lack of imagination of the burbs. Such a pity.
No TVs! Yeah!. Went for lunch and a beer with a friend and they only had the brunch menu available. The menu was hard to decipher and they had a very limited vegetarian selection and we up with fries which were $6.00 for a small portion. The beer selection was good, the music was ok and not too loud and the staff were nice and friendly. I really liked the art work on the walls and more importantly they had no TVs, which was incredible! I will be going back and hopefully they will create a vegetarian friendly menu.
I got to finally try the hph in Dec. with my husband and son, they were great at accommodating space for my 11 month old with his high chair etc. LOVE the space it is very fresh and inspiring loads of attention to detail. We went for brunch and we really loved the menu it is a very mature well thought out selection. We had the French toast - yum and the duck with grated potatoes - loved the grated crispy potatoes with duck my only suggestion is that is surprisingly small we also had a few of their really cool "snack" options, chicken liver - very nice and brussel sprouts - also quite good. All in all this place is top notch something refreshingly different for Ottawa.... that we will gladly enjoy again !
My folks took the family there for my birthday dinner & we all truly enjoyed ourselves! My soup was tasty, my burger was hearty & my salty fries were plentiful. My dad especially loved his salad & fish & chips so much so he wanted to get another order to go! Quirky & unique simple decor, nice music & nothing matching anything else makes for an interesting spot to dine...now if only they could put a sign on the front of the place, they'd be all set!!
Nice Environment, Good Food.. Went on a Wednesday night as a party of 4 and it was quite busy. We had to wait at the bar for a few minutes. The bar space is very nice.
The food itself was quite good. I had the fish and Chips and I also tried a few bites of the lamb sandwich for appetizer I had a trout( I think..),beet and caper thing that was very good. The only downfall was both the beer and the meal I initially ordered were sold out. With a pretty small menu to choose from already it was disappointing when that happened- AND we were not told as we were seated of the lack of choices..
Overall a good experience and would go back.
Heh.. Reviews are interesting, to put it best.
For an independently run, fresh and new to a transforming neighbourhood, I think that The Hintonburg Public House is representing themselves with class and integrity.
For anyone to have the audacity to write anything negative within the first couple months, let alone weeks of a new establishment is pretty astounding. Impressive almost.. four points worthy.
For the owner, Summer.. You have an idea in mind, and it is your own, it has given you the drive and the motivation to get all your ducks in a row - and that idea will serve you well, very well. Keep with it.
We'll have to brainstorm hobbies for those who don't get it. :)
