Review Continental Bagel - Ottawa

Jamie Roy
This little gem is tucked in the byward market and serves up great Montreal-style bagels. I personally recommend getting any of the breakfast bagels as they stuff it up well and ofcourse its fresh out of the fire bagels. They served different mixes of bagels to select from and you can always just go with butter, or just have the bagel on it's own you cant go wrong here.

Good fresh bagel. I got the breakfast #2 egg, cheese and turkey plain bagel for $6.50. Nothing compares to NY bagels though! New York City is the bagel city.

Great little bagel / sandwich shop. Inside the ByWard market, bagels made fresh, lots of flavor and great price. Staff is friendly and helpful. I had the Smoked meat bagel sandwich and it was wonderful. Definitely recommend this place.

Best ever! This family run business serves up the best Montreal style bagels in the city.

Unique, tasty bagels. Different than a Montreal bagel, and possibly even better. Although love them both!!

My girlfriend and I were in Ottawa for a week. We were told that we should stop by Byward market. Once we got here, we saw this bagel house and thought we should drop in. It was an excellent choice! The bagels here are baked right in the store in front of your eyes in a wood burning stove, which gives it a smoky aroma. They have many different types of sandwiches that they make out of these bagels. I had the Montreal steak one, and was pleasantly surprised by the juiciness of the meat, and the way the flavour popped in my mouth. The staff was very friendly, and the atmosphere felt very social. I will definately be coming back!

We really enjoyed stopping by for a light lunch on a Saturday afternoon. It was fun to watch the bagels being made in the brick oven. The owners seem no nonsense so know exactly what you want when you order. I've had the Montreal meat and the smoked salmon sandwiches and both were great.

My wife and I had only three days in Ottawa. But we liked Continental Bagels so much, we returned twice. I loved the vegetarian bagel sandwich with the marinated (or pickled?) eggplant that cut through the mix and was incredible. My wife tried the salmon and smoked meat bagel sandwich, and loved them both. We came back and had a simple sesame bagel with butter. Montreal style bagels stand or fall on their sesame seed variety, and this one was great. It did remind me enough of St Viateur to keep me happy. Even the coffee was good. Next time I return to Ottawa, I'll definitely be back.

Enjoyed my experience. The staff was very friendly and quick and I really like their alfajores.
Would absolutely come back to try more of their baked goods.

Yowzer! This guy knows how to make a tasty bagel! You can watch him roll and bake 'em right there in front of you.

Came for breakfast one day - got the #3: bagel sandwich with scrambled eggs, cheese and ham. So Good! Highly recommend.

The owner of this establishment is one of the friendliest on the block. Which makes it hard not to like his decilious bagels. Whether you are enjoying one with butter or cream cheese or even a fancy sandwich there is no wrong answer when ordering at this establishment.

Had a herb and cheese breakfast bagel, and it was delicious! The bagels are always fresh and they have a great selection. The sesame, and herb and cheese bagels are especially good

Friday for lunch I headed to the Byward Market to try out Continental Bagel in the Byward Market Square building (55 Byward Market Square, Ottawa). It was 11:00 a.m and one customer was just leaving after having their order prepared at a Subway sandwich shop counter like set up. Another customer in front of me was putting in their order which, ironically, was the same as what I was going to order.

One of my favourite breakfast spots in the market! Great selection of fresh bagel sandwiches with fast, friendly service. Lunch lines can get pretty long, but definitely worth the wait.

Continental Bagel has amazingly dense and flavorful bagels. I go there on occasion and buy plain ones and just eat them like that. They are, of course, also delicious with cream cheese or whatever your preference, but I enjoy the taste of the bagel itself so much that it feels like a waste to mask it in any way. Highly recommended! Probably the absolute best bagels I've ever had, and I know my breads. Would eat as a dessert. Service, I will admit, is quite poor, and it's not the most sanitary of places, but where is?

Sometimes, when I am on my way through the Market with a destination other than a restaurant in mind, I like to stop for a bagel. A proper bagel. Boiled in sweetened water, liberally sesame seeded, and then cooked in a wood over. With cream cheese, smoked salmon, capers and a bit of red onion. Sounds good, eh? Continental Bagel Co. does do their bagels very well. They are all that a good bagel should be. Crispy exterior, soft interior. And that perfect taste. So why the poor rating? The service. They have always been hit and miss, but for a quick stop that hasn't been a huge problem. Until they spectacularly missed today. When I arrived, I was the only one there - weekday, mid morning that is not a surprise. I place my order and the server/cashier starts making it. Only to stop twice to serve people who came in after me. Complete transaction - taking their orders, getting their food, taking their money. All while my lonely bagel and salmon wait, out in the open, for him to return. When I spoke to him, he was polite and apologetic. The owner came around to help complete my transaction since their debut machine was not working properly, and then proceeded to get angry at me, being quite rude, when the transaction failed a second time.

So while this is indeed a good bagel, I can't in good conscience recommend a place where, over multiple visits, the service is middling to poor.

Let me start off by saying I eat bagels quite often, a Tim Horton's breakfast sandwich, store bought bagels etc. that is what I always thought a bagel was, that was until today when I had a Continental bagel, they have ruined all other bagels for me for life, they are amazing. I didn't think bagels could be this good. I had the smoked meat bagel sandwich and after one bite I knew I would never look at bagels the same again. I ended up buying a dozen right away and went home and crushed 3 of them.

Fresh bagels are best bagels. Stopped for a breakfast bagel sandwich, right when the sesame seed bagels were coming out of the oven. The egg (which there was a lot of) was heated in the microwave, but the sandwich was easily the best bagel sandwich I've ever had. Having the fresh bagel (still steaming when sliced) with melted cheddar cheese was just awesome. My spouse got the vegetarian sandwich and liked it, but the breakfast sandwich was better.

Great Bagels - even the sandwiches are top notch. The Montreal style bagels just take it to the next level. The Sesame, Poppyseed and Spicy (just slightly spicy) bagels are top notch. Go grab a nice treat!

Ok! I'm an ex-Montrealer who only goes directly to either the 24 hour Faimount Bagel or the St Viateur Bagel & only buys what is hot from the fire oven. I've tried 6 bagel places in New York City(none were great)& St Urban Bagels in Toronto & Vancouver's Siegels. None were up to scratch. When I went to the Byward Market & saw the right oven, I asked for 1 hot off the wood long "spatula" with nothing on. Bingo! This is it! I then ordered one with cream chreese & lox, made a mess & bought a dozen. If you can't get to Montreal's Fairmount or St Viateur, this is it!

Great place for a quick bite to eat! Perfect location, great staff, and not too expensive. I recommend you try the continental bagel at least once!
