Best butter chicken and Naan bread that I have ever had. The dishes are fresh and delicious and the decor makes me feel like I am eating a fancy dinner but not at a fancy dinner price.
Ottawa farewell (for now) dinner.
Kids wanted to eat Indian, so found this neat little Indian restaurant new Carleton U. Parking is a hassle which I do not like. We were acknowledged within a minute and were seated on a table in a near empty restaurant, but it was just after 6pm.
Were given three chutneys and 4 papads. The chutney that was green seemed to be a spicy chutney, but turned out to be SWEET. The tamarind chutney was sweet and sour and the pickle was OK. The papads were roasted (fried at Namaste India)
Ordered, Malai Kofta, Kumbh Mutter (mushrooms, peas and paneer) and Saag Paneer with naans. All the three dishes had a nice flavour to it and none of them were spicy or were overly greasy. With Kumbh Mutter to be the best of the three.
The naan we were not pleased with. They were quite thin and therefore almost crispy on some parts. We were at Namaste India a couple of days ago and their naans are something to crave for - soft and fluffy and light.
If only I can have the dishes from here and naans from Namaste - Utopia!
We ordered a mutter pulao (peas + rice) and it was perfect.
With the bill each of us got a chocolate mint stick which is a nice touch
The best. Best Indian food in Ottawa. Hands down. No contest. We've been ordering for 10 years or more and we are never disappointed. Always flavourful and fresh. A great place with great chefs and servers.
Best Naan in Ottawa. My friends and I often debate over the best Indian food in Ottawa, and I'm a staunch supporter of Taj Mahal. I've been there several times over the year for supper, and I've always been happy. The Naan is fresh and it's the best I've ever had in my experience. The curries are good, The only meal I wasn't totally happy with was when my brother and I order the meal for two, since I hadn't tried any of the tandori options before. I found them to be a bit dry and not worth the price. Stick with the curries, and order the naan. I've never had a problem with the service personally, but I can understand the criticisms. They are sometimes slow, and seem to sometimes forget tables. It's almost like when a new table comes in, they switch their attention there. I have had to flag them down a couple times, or remind them about things, but they are always prompt after that. These issues are alI worth it for the quality of the food. I've had a good chat with one of the servers who is always there, and despite his harsh outward demeanor, was really friendly. It is my first choice when I want to go out for Indian food.
My husband and I have been eating for almost 10 years. It's our favourite Indian restaurant in Ottawa. The waiters aren't all that friendly but the food has never once disappointed us. The prices are good as well. If you are looking for an Indian restaurant with awesome food, give this place a try!
Got a Taji variety tray that was awesome for $19.99 with butter chicken, lamb, rice, yogourt and curried veggies and best ever Naan bread for sure!!!!
The flavourful and warm Taj Mahal. I have been eating at the Taj, perhaps three of four times a year for decades. Mostly I go with two other male friends to catch up. The Taj is perfectly suited to us. We want easy parking, a tasty and nutritious menu, a quiet atmosphere and good service. The Taj has all that and much more. The lunchtime buffet is always a winner. While the soup and some vegetables change from time to time, the plentiful tandoori chicken and naan, the beef and chicken curries all seem to welcome one home again and again. And all this for a very modest price! I love the Taj and the Taj loves me.
I went for the Indian buffet and it was pretty good. We went near the end of the lunch (1:45) so there was little left. The pakoras and butter chicken were my favorite. The server was friendly and kept refilling our water regularly. I would recommend going at the beginning of lunch to get the full variety and freshness.
Authentic Food, Could Stand Redecorating. This is, by-far, the best Indian food I have eaten in Ottawa. They have a tandoor oven right in the restaurant where they make their own nann and may of their dishes. The staff is experienced, professional and polite.
The restaurant itself is a bit tired and worn. It really needs a make-over. I tend to only get take-out (the portions are generous).
Definitely one of the best Indian restaurants in Ottawa. We've been going here for many years and have never been disappointed.
Taj mahal had delicious tasty food. I would go back
I am extremely picky when it comes to Indian cuisine....I have only one word....Fabulous!!!! Every taste bud is grateful! Keep up the great work and don't change a thing!!!! Hope the construction does not deter anyone!!!
Definitely Worth a Visit. We have been to this restaurant many times and the food is consistently very good. This is likely one of the best Indian restaurants in the city. If you are in the Glebe, hungry, and in the mood for Indian, this should be your stop.
Firstly, all of the food listed below was not ordered at one time; this is a consolidated review that covers the many tens of times we have enjoyed the food at Taj Mahal. Here is quick run-down on the items:
Excellent/Must Try: Lamb Vindaloo (very spicy), Prawn Balchow (very spicy), Lamb Madras (very spicy), Lamb Passanda (excellent and mild), Tandoori Salmon (nice change from chicken), Tandoori Pomfret
Very Good/Worth Trying: Dahl Mahkni, Saag Paneer, Onion Bhaji, Onion Naan (tasty but a bit spicy)
OK: Butter Chicken, Lamb Bhoona
Standard Fare: Naan, Pulloa Rice
Oh, and they have a local delivery service!
Best buffet in ottawa. I am a regular buffet customer at the Taj, and It must be said that in ottawa..Taj buffet is second to none. best tandoor chickens and naan, and the best beef vindaloo + butter chicken. Must try.
Great eating but only before 8, come after and they'll give you left overs. Food is pricey but the atmosphere is nice and the staff is friendly. They have a tandoor in house so expect great naan and meat. Make sure you try the sag paneer, it's something of a house speciality.
Food is really good specially shrimp bhuna, naan and butter chicken.
Had the absolute pleasure of eating at the Taj Mahal! I cannot recommend this Indian food spot enough! First, the food was delicious, beautifully presented, great portions. We were full but still talking about wanting to come back. You know it’s good when you are talking about returning while in the process of stuffing your face! But even more delightful than the food was Samir, the owner and gentleman who took care of us during our dine in experience. He was kind, funny, attentive, and generous. Thank you for a great evening.
Taj Mahal has been my favourite restaurant for Indian Food since I was little. The owner is so friendly and always takes the extra step to make us feel welcome! The food is delicious- make sure to try the butter chicken, naan and Khumb Matar. Lots of vegetarian options. Support local!
Unexpected stop for lunch on an extremely cold day. Decided to try the lunch buffet. Smaller selection but surprisingly good and reasonably priced. Has a family owned feel to the place and you can see them preparing food in the tandor ovens behind the glass partition. Vegetable dishes were very good.
Super friendly and helpful staff. Delicious food. Will be visiting again.
Taj Mahal has been our go-to restaurant for years. Butter chicken, saag paneer, lamb Rohan Josh, dal makani, chicken tandoori and yummy Naan are our favourites. Go now!!
The place was good. Service was exceptionally good. Food was good but lacks a bit of seasoning. Chicken was tasty but dry. But the presentation was very good. Very child friendly. Give 4 stars because my kids enjoyed the food I did not. Also they have child seats.
Great location, small but accessible parking, the place looks gorgeous inside, amazing food and drinks definitely gonna try and be a regular there
