Not exaggerating, this is the best Chinese food I’ve ever had. The general tso and sweet and sour pork had an amazing coating but the pieces inside were huge! Egg rolls are incredible, Hunan dumplings out of this work. Beyond amazing
I was very impressed with this place, the staff are all very friendly, the food is top quality and bursting with flavours an the wait time is not very long at all especially for the amount of people there. I ordered the yellow curry, and hands down it was the best Thai curry I’ve had. Spring roll are also amazing too. Highly recommend this place to anyone and everyone
My boyfriend and I went on Canada day because I was craving pad Thai (lol) . Service was great, everyone was really nice and understanding when we said we just wanted an order of pad Thai. The food was really good, though I don't really have anything to judge it against as the only other pad Thai I've had has been from Thai express. Large portions, fair prices, the only thing that was a bit lacking was decor. Overall, would come again and recommend to others.
I came here with friends a couple of years ago and it made a lasting impression. I LOVED what I ordered (chicken coconut milk soup and a curry dish- I was also with a big group so I got to try a lot of dishes). If you go with a decent-sized group (7+) you sit at a big round table with a turnstile in the centre so you can easily where with friends if that's what you're into. It's a great place in the market if you like Thai. Check it out next time you're down there!
The restaurant has been in the area like 20 years and it is still there...so something must be right. I don't know the Royal Thai part very much but it seems like Thai cuisine by Chinese is not so authentic, but Palais Imperial is my go to dim sum place in Ottawa. It is better than any dim sum in Ottawa Chinatown in my opinion. Good selection of items with friendly service.
Royal Thai has the most massive menu of Chinese Thai and dim sum choices so it seems there's something for everyone! Service was quick and friendly and my red curry tofu was perfect. My boyfriend asked for his red curry chicken to be made more spicy and liked the result.
I was in Ottawa for six days for CHSS at Ottawa U and I enjoyed my last dinner here. I was with friends and noticed that most tables were ordering off the Chinese menu but my dining companions said they'd prefer Thai and I am so happy we went that route because it was excellent. We had five things: two appetizers of green papaya salad and fish cakes, one pad thai with shrimp, and two curries, panang with chicken and a red curry with shrimp. Everything was rich in flavour, nicely spiced and generally delectable. Service was fast and efficient. My fave was the panang curry- addictive, rich with ground peanuts, I almost wanted to order more rice to dip the dregs of that curry into. Magnificent. Dinner for three was just over $60 (we just had water to drink) which is incredibly reasonable considering the quality, but we could have ordered one or even two more dishes; portions are on the small side so be prepared for that. That's not a complaint- next time I'm in Ottawa I can't wait to order more!
Good experience! Went for lunch and the service was very quick. Got a large portion of chicken pad Thai, was very good (but a bit too much egg for my taste). My friend got tofu, which she thought tasted much more like fish than actual tofu- they insisted that she was wrong (which she could have been). Overall the flavours were good, service was quick, was packed and seems like a popular place.
Great dim sum!. The spacing of the tables doesn't necessarily allow for the traditional carts to come around, but they do have a great dim sum restaurant. The manager (I presume?) is very nice and accommodating, offering us different plates and telling us that "It's very good!" Would come back.
After a dim sum lunch yesterday I've decided that this restaurant has an identity problem. Don't think mixing Thai cuisine with dim sum is working. I don't like being handed a menu and asked to choose the dim sum items. Where are the carts?
Just had the Crispy Duck again and was very happy -- really good service and price and the food is as good today as it ever has been -- a real staple when we're in town!
Good classic Chinese fare, for the most part very nice service, Maitre D needs to smile a bit more, The dimsum is great and flavourful. 90% of the dishes are very good. Windows big, a lttle expensive but it is the byward market.
The best sit down Chinese place in Ottawa. Looks great from the inside and service is spectacular. The food is fresh and the menu is huge and authentic!!!! Try this place!!!!!!!
Good food - good service. Cantonese chow mein is tasty. As is the chicken pad Thai and cashew chicken.

My favorite gluten free restaurant. Royal Thai has so many gluten free options! From Pad Thai, to beef and broccoli, they can pretty much make anything gluten free if you ask them. Only chinese food I've had in 3 years is here, and the Pad Thai satisfies my cravings every time.
Amazing spicy Thai dishes and waiters are very good.
Awesome Thai Food. Best Thai food I have had in Ottawa. Got the jungle curry. Never lets me down.
Definitely my go-to restaurant. The Tom Yum soup is DELISH. I always order two for myself. Any takeout place can do pad thai, skip it and try their fantastic curries. Red with peanuts is the best, I could have it as a beverage if the beef would fit through a straw. Seriously, so good!!
My go to restaurant :). When I crave Thai, this is my go to place. Simple decor with paper table clothes, but the food is fantastic. The male waiters, especially Tom are awesome with their recommendations and jokes. Highly recommend the jungle curry with beef or chicken - both are excellent.
Royal Thai is amazing!. This restaurant is definitely one of my favourites in Ottawa! Have been here many times and they always have great service and amazing food. Their pad thai is excellent. I also recommend the tiger shrimp jungle curry and the beef panang. I promise you won't be disappointed.
Great spot.. Overall a good place to eat. Very quick service and large portions. The price is right on and we had a ton of left overs for the next day. I will visit again.
AMAZING!. Wow, this was amazing food. Both my husband and I loved our dishes. I had a dish T52 (Chicken with Cashew nuts and dried chillies, mushroom, bell pepper) and my husband had T53 (Barbecued spareribs).
Amazing! Best chicken pad Thai in the city. I used to live by royal Thai and lived off it. Won't be disappointed!
Went in a group of 15 rowdy/indecisive teenagers. they had great service, very attentive and patient. Restaurant was fairly empty because we were there at 5pm, so we got our food quickly. Would définirent go again :)
Always good food. I have been to Royal Thai multiple times and have always enjoyed the food. As it has been said customer service could be improved upon.
Great food and service. Don't go there for Pad Thai, try something different
This place makes wicked Thai food. They could improve their customer service a bit - they don't seem really glad to be serving people.
It was very tasty. I highly recommend the chopped peanuts and fresh limes – they add a lot to the flavour. And of course, cilantro is a must (my favourite herb).
I had heard, or read somewhere, that the Royal Thai, which used to occupy other premises, is now in the same building as the Palais Imperial . When I checked it out, I assumed that the Palais Imperial (a Chinese restaurant) was on the lower floor, with Royal Thai upstairs, but, in fact, you can be seated on the lower floor and be given the menu for both establishments. This was a nice bonus, I thought since, in addition to allowing me to sample a couple of appetizers from the Royal Thai menu, I also able to enjoy an item or two of dim sum as well…
The Royal Thai has a long standing great reputation in Ottawa. Those who have frequented the market for years will recant the magnificent flavours from this Restaurant and how they always stand up to their reputation. I have been going to the Royal Thai for some time now and love it each time. When my mother visited Ottawa a few months ago we decided to hit the market for some food. She loved good food, so I knew to take her to the Royal Thai. To my amazement she had been there before, some years ago, for one of my birthdays I can barely remember. The two of us were excited, she especially to reorder some tasty dishes she has experienced before. We sat down and evidently were too hungry to choose what to eat. The server, an older Asian man, looked grumpy and uninviting but we had no choice but to ask him for his recommendations. He was such a lovely mad - so witty and dry - and recommended the Royal Thai Spring Rolls to start. Oh my, so mouth watering. To continue he recommended a nice
Good food, great prices
Place has nice clean upscale decor but somehow the prices are very affordable.
Portions are good and the food was great.
There is a huge menu with several different Asian styles.
Had a fabulous meal for a great price.
Highly recommend.
Royal Thai is a nice restaurant. The food is delicious and reasonably priced. If you're looking for good Asian food in Byward Market, definitely try out Royal Thai! They will stop accepting people when it's half an hour to closing though so you'll have to arrive earlier. I have had their pad see ew and crab fried rice and really enjoyed it. They also give fortune cookies at the end of your meal.
If you are looking for great flavors on this type of food, here definitely you will find them.
Mouth-watering dishes; has options of Thai, Chinese and Hakka. Located in downtown, close to the Parliament Hill.
