Review Royal Treasure Restaurant - Ottawa

This place is hands THE best Chinese food restaurant in Ottawa. My family and I have been coming to this place since 1994 when a family friend first introduced us to it. The food here is so good that we always measure food from other places and compare it to the food here. The staff is always friendly especially the daughter she also makes sure to try and accommodate us as well every other guests that is dining. We would always come here for special occasions and whenever we would crave it. Last few years we've only gotten take out due to obvious reasons but as soon as it reopens and restrictions are lifted we will be back. I highly recommend this place and I promise you you will not regret it.

Simply the best Chinese food in town! For many years always consistent in fresh and delicious dishes, the hot and sour soup is phenomenal!!!

Great customer service, food tasted awesome. Portions lasted us a week. Only thing was the soup was a bit too sour, added a bit of sugar and it balanced out. General tao and spicy Tingly beef just as I remembered. Also wished their debit machine had a tip function.

This is my favourite Chinese restaurant in Ottawa. Before the pandemic, this was one of our regular spots for celebrating (or at the end of a long week). Great family-run establishment, warm and friendly service, delicious food. Order something peppersalt, the general tao chicken, the sizzling stuffed eggplant, the crispy duck, or just about anything else on the menu. You'll feel well taken care of :)

Was super excited to try it but was a bit disappointed. Ordered their beef with chinese vegetables on rice and the spicy crispy pork. I thought the flavors for the spicy crispy pork was good, only wish the portion size was a bit bigger since you're paying around $15 for around 7 small chicken wing sized pieces of pork. On the other hand, the beef with vegetables was not good. The rice was hard and stale in several areas, beef was tender but the sauce was a bit hard to swallow. Had a strong starch flavor and was lacking a lot of flavor so it was more like mixing and eating a watered down, soy flavor with strong starchy accents. Will have to try it again, would just avoid the meat on rice dishes. Fried rice dishes would probably be good tho!

Client since 1998! By far the most delicious food on earth. Sue and the crew are simply amazing, we love the food everytime. Today, we celebrated our daughter 4th birthday and she requested chicken sweet soup! Looks like they will have another long standing client. 🥰

OMG, great food!!! Bought the dinner for 4 and it was more than enough, hot in temperature and tasty. Their spring rolls are to die for. The young lady that took our order was super friendly and called us 20 mins later to tell us our order was ready for pick up. Really impressed and will be back next week for sure.

Ordered dinner for 2 combo B for pickup. Didn’t check the order til we got home and realized they forgot our egg rolls :( service was really good though. The portions were big but I found the food lacking a bit in flavour. Would try again ordering different items.

I found the waitress to be a bit harsh. She slammed the plates etc in the lazy Susan. It was a bit obnoxious. There's was an abundance of food which was great. Had sweet and sour soup, garlic greens (pretty good), rice was good, I didn't like the chicken but loved the sauce. I did enjoy the experience and with good friends.

The service is excellent and the food is delicious. My favourite Chinese food in Ottawa.

Excellent value for delicious food and the portions are plentiful. I would recommend The Royal Tresure to all my friends and family.
Anne Lim
The best Sole Fish deep fry dish, definitely will let friends and family know.
Sean Fortier
Food is excellent. Hot and sour soup and the general Taos is the best in the city
Andrew Phenix
Best hot and sour soup among other great dishes. Huge portions and great prices. Highly recommend to anyone wanting Chinese in Ottawa.
Jenn Davis
It was fine. Damn fine. Come for the sweet & sour chicken, stay for the Singapore noodles.
Anna Phung

One of the best places in town to eat. Family run and very friendly. Recommend reservations
Andy Lee
Without a doubt, the best authentic Chinese in Ottawa.

Pros: Friendly service, convenient location Cons: I can't sugar coat it - the food was not good. The sauces were lacking in flavour (whilst the General Tso's Chicken had some heat, it was devoid of any flavour). The most prominent flavour in both of our fried chicken dishes was cooking oil. Perhaps it was an off night, but I don't think we'll be going back to find out.

Snuggled in place with feeble lights .. crowded much reservations recommended.. food was just good.. light and mild taste .. loved the shrimp fried rice 🍛 definitely done on point.. I loved the jasmine tea which had a pure natural taste.. meek delight .. good price good food 6.5/10

Hands down my favourite restaurant. Their General Tao chicken is marvellous! Their portions are great for what you’re paying for. The pricing is fair. The service is great as well. For someone who doesn’t speak their native tongue, their service is great despite there sometimes being a barrier. I believe it’s their daughter, she is there if ever that barrier cannot be broken down (she’s very much bilingual). They do have like 3 parking spots on the side but expect typical Somerset/Centretown street parking. You can call to reserve (especially Saturday) obviously when you do the results depend on what you are asking for and when. It is a cozy space so be mindful when you reserve!

What a disappointment! This was our second choice based on the rating as our first choice in Chinatown was full and we didn't want to wait half hour for a table.

This is a hole in the wall kinda restaurant (there are apartments upstairs) which we don't mind at all, had the food served was good.

The server was friendly, and provided us with tea right away even though we didn't ask for tea. We ordered the salt & pepper shrimps, BBQ pork tofu pot and beef rice noodles.

The BBQ pork tofu 'pot' was not a pot as expected. It was just sauce (weird oyster sauce taste to it) on top of BBQ pork, greens and pieces of cold tofu. It was awful. The noodles were terrible as well with a few pieces of beef with bland sauce. We asked for rice which we were charged $1.75 for one portion.

The shrimps were pretty good actually but the other dishes were so bad that it ruined our dinner.

Their hot and sour soup is to die for - I simply love it and can't eat it anywhere else after having it here - nothing compares!

Have had many of their dishes over the years and have been never had a bad experience but they do have some dishes that stand out. The H&S soup, General Tao's Chicken and Tingly Beef are our favourites.

Awful. Tried 5 dishes including a couple of specials. Only one was edible and still disappointing. The others were tragic. You couldn't pay me to go back. We have several Chinese restaurants in the city that are much better and more authentic. I'm angry at all the people who voted this up to 89% and cost me 75 bucks. Seriously?? I presume it is up voted by friends and family. It took a me two days to wash the taste out. The best thing was the fortune cookie.

Was recommended by a coworker as the best general tao's in Ontario. I was skeptical, so I went and tried it out.

I found it was saturated with oil, the oil probably wasn't hot enough when they stated frying it. The sauce tasted kind of like watered down Franks Red Hot. Not impressed, wouldn't go back.

This place came highly recommended by a Chinese friend and it doesn't disappoint. Prices have gone up over the years, but its still very good. You should call ahead to reserve a table. Service is efficient and its family owned.
LovesToEat
Terrible food and bad service. Two of our dishes were made wrong and the waiter actually asked us if they were ok to keep this way. We had them remade. Would not go back or recommend to others.

My Absolute Favourite Place for Chinese!. This restaurant has been around for over 20 years and I hope it stays around for many many more years! This is one of Ottawa's little "diamonds in the rough" - it's a small venue, there's nothing fancy about it but oh my the good - you cannot go wrong coming here if you're craving Chinese food. My go to dishes are: Sesame Shrimp, Deep Fried Shrimp with Sweet & Sour Sauce, Any fried noodle dish, Lemon Chicken and General Tao. The portions are huge, the prices are dirt cheap - if you share dishes and split the bill between your friends - you can easily walk out stuffed spending probably only ~$15. I love it.

Okay food. Food here is okay. My family always comes here although it is not my favorite. My cousins really like General Tao Chicken. I myself like the cassarole. The service is pretty moody. Sometimes they are super nice, but sometimes i feel like they are so mad that they throw the food on the table

Very quick and tasty Chinese food. The sizzling dishes are lighter on the sauce and healthier...very nice. Relatively speaking the staff are quite nice for an oriental restaurant.
Lore
The absolute best!!!! I constantly crave there food! Especially the sesame shrimp, and general Taos chicken. Mmmmm!!!!! YOU NEED TO TRY THIS PLACE. Go now! :)

Awfull Just ordered from .... Awfull

Just ordered from royal treasure after reading all the positive reviews. Never again. We ordered 5 dishes and everything tasted the same. No flavor, texture, everything soaked in the same red sauce, poor quality meat. We ended up spending 70$ and threw everything in the green bin. There are better options in Chinatown. I wish that somebody would of lft this royal treasure buried.

Excellent. My family and I have been eating here for twenty years. The food is fresh and cooked to perfection. We do prefer to go during the week when the kitchen isn't so rushed. Highly recommend it.

Totally worth checking out. It doesn't exactly look the best from the outside but the food is fantastic and the portions are generous. You can get both American Chinese and actual Chinese food but either way you'll be satisfied, definitely give it a try!

Delicious congee!

Food is not fresh and waiter lies to your face. I've ordered a sea food fried noodle, and the scallops had a strange after taste, to the point of going bad. When I went to the front to pay, I've told the waiter that he should inform the kitchen that the scallops might be bad and should not serve it to other clients. The waiter proceeds to tell me that they get fresh scallops from LaPointe fish market on a daily basis, I just nodded and left, but I will never be going back.... Please don't lie to your customers, and pretend to use $20 a pound scallops on a $13 dish.

Plain. Ordered pick up after looking at all the positive reviews online. Some dishes were alright, others were plain bad. The good, general tao chicken and Yan chow fried rice. Spring rolls were plain and not very good. The very bad: shrimp with cashew and mixed vegetable (the vegetables included were mostly celery onion carrot all chopped up and plain tasting with 4 shrimp for $15?) and Shanghai noodles just terrible, worst I’ve had. Staff were not friendly at the front and it was pricy. Very disappointing, we won’t be back.

Been coming here for years. Consistently good food, prices, and portion.
Stuffed eggplant with minced pork is one of my faves

The Best. Best chinese in town. Hands down. People should stop going to Canadian chinese food places and eating the crap they call chinese food. Royal Treasure gives you a real taste of authentic cuisine, with great service and prices. I have been going there for years, and will for many more to come.

Quality and Quantity. Hot and Sour Soup, Hunan Dumplings, General Tao Chicken, Peppersal Shrimp, Satay Beef and Chicken, Keilin Tofu, BBQ Duck, Singapore Vermicelli, Cantonese Fried Noodle and Chicken Salted Fish Fried Rice. Simply the best!
Morningstar
Amazing restaurant. Great food to be had but the service not very friendly.
Generous portions. The staff needs to learn to say thank you and smile.

Comfort food. It is good.

Yummy. Been going here for years and their quality has stayed the same. This is a rarity as usually restaurants start cutting corners after a couple of years. Portions are enormous and the flavours are fantastic. Try the general toas chicken.....guaranteed the best in town
Herb
Good sechzuan. Its hard to find good sechzuan anywhere. But that was pretty good.
John Dominique
You've gott to try the hunan dumplings, the general Tao chicken, sesame shrimp, salt and pepper pork. Amazingg!!

Best Hot and Sour Soup In Town!!. There are 3 dishes we must have when we go to the Royal Treasure. 1) Hot and Sour Soup (we ordered a small the other night for 4 people and it was plenty). 2) Spring rolls (large and packed with goodies. Love their spring roll sauce!) 3) Royal Treasure Fried Rice (such a huge portion and loaded with shrimp as well as other yummies). Our latest visit did not disappoint. We also ordered the Szechuan Spicy Vegetables and also the Sizzling Beef in Black Bean Sauce. The service was very attentive. We were in and out in no time flat. Almost too rushed. Better that than slow!
Josie
Good food, good quantity, good price but always crowded hard to get seats!

For maybe 15 years now our regular haunt for Chinese food has been Royal Treasure Restaurant on Somerset. What draws us there each time is their Hot and Sour Soup. For us, it rates as the best around. Many have claimed that Royal Treasure is one of the most authentic Chinese food restaurants in Ottawa. I am absolutely not an expert on Cantonese and Szechuan cuisine so won't be able to verify this claim. What I do know is that we love the flavours and the variety of dishes. And when it comes to Szechuan, they deliver a nice bite. We usually get to the Treasure each season. Oddly it is most consistently around this time of year when the days are darkly long and the weather too carries quite the bite. I make sure to dress warmly because the door to outside is constantly swinging with customers coming in for their orders. We prefer to go with a crowd to enjoy a good selection of dishes. It is hard to cover the favourites with just the two of us. Tonight we mustered up a gang of 5. Alth
