Review T'basil - Ottawa

Laura Proulx
I've only eaten here once for takeout. My workplace ordered lunch from here on a Saturday. The general consensus from the staff was that the food smelled and tasted odd - aside from me none of the staff finished their meals and some wouldn't even take more than one bite. My meal was alright but definitely had an odd taste to it and I found the sauce to be a bit more of a liquid consistency than I would like. Thankfully my meal did not upset my stomach - but the whole experience was enough for me to decide not to eat here again.

A couple of Saturdays ago, we ordered lunch for eight hard working people who were starving. Appetizer of A9 - wontons - those little pockets of fried flavour goodness with thai dipping sauce. We followed that up with 3 orders of V13 - Vegetarian Spicy Noodle with soy bits (they even made one extra spicy as we requested); 2 order of X8 - Spicy noodle with chicken; one X7 - Grilled Salmon; one order of V18 - NEUA TOD KROB (served with rice); and X12 - PAD TOA LUUN TAO (served with rice). The order was ready for pickup in 25 minutes. All was hot, delicious, fresh ingredients and plentiful. All the bellies were full and even a few leftovers. Though we did takeout, there is a patio in front andplenty of free parking. Thank you for the most excellent lunc T-Basil - we'll be baaaaaaack. :-)

Hubby & I tried T Basil last night. Excellent food & Great service. He had the deluxe basil pad tai with chicken & shrimp. I had the vegetarian mock chicken& vegetable pad tai in peanut sauce. We will be repeat customers.😁😋

Picked up take out dinner for 4 from T'Basil which has been a preferred location for weekday lunches on occasion with my daughter for a long time. Tonight was a celebration dinner with friends. We ordered & picked up the meals & returned home. The food was nice and hot. Guest 1 selected the V7 Veg w tofu & crispy noodle + V2 veg rolls; 2nd guest selected the C2 Panang curry with shrimp and V2 Veg rolls. Both of these meals looked good and smelled great although I noticed the C2 guest left pretty much all of her rice & sauce. Hubby & I both ordered the X2 Pad Thai. I ordered mine with only shrimp and he ordered his with shrimp and chicken. That was the first problem. When I was placing that part of the order I had to repeat that it was "one X2 with shrimp and one X2 with chicken & shrimp" a couple of times. What we got was anything but that. Yes, it was Pad Thai but it had mystery meat (sorry I'm not really sure whether it was beef or pork or both), chicken, shrimp, and tofu. That was a bit disappointing for me as I'm strictly a shrimp person and my husband is not a fan of tofu and then asked me what the mystery meat was. Our A1 spring rolls were excellent with a nice crispy golden wrap and hot tasty stuffing so that was a promising start however the rest of the meal not quite so pleasing. There was what appeared to be crumbled or finely chopped peanuts on top and a few bean sprouts but the overall dishes, aside from having the wrong toppings, merited a better flavour/taste as it was quite bland, plus a bit of chopped cilantro for colour & fresh flavour was sorely missing. I wasn't looking for hot/spicy but some flavour that was a bit more distinctive would have made it better. I would also recommend the lime wedges be sent in a separate bag as they were also hot to the touch. Our V7 crispy noodle guest enjoyed her meal and her V2 rolls and had no comment except she was satisfied with her meal. As we had expectations for good food we were disappointed in the quality of the X2 and more so with the error of the pad thai topping of the mixed meat/shrimp product instead of what we ordered. I truly enjoyed my last lunch take out from T'Basil of delicious won ton soup and fresh roll with shrimp, and may just stick to lunch from them for now.

Loved it here. Enjoyed our food very much and would for sure come here again to enjoy another serving of crispy noodles along with trying something new. Service was quick and the atmosphere was enjoyable. I was also a fan of the Sake which was reasonably priced.

This is by far the best Bun Bo Hue in the city. We order almost weekly and the food is consistently amazing! The staff and owners are so welcoming and friendly.

I have never seen such polarizing reviews for a restaurant. In the end I join the ranks of those who did not have a good experience. I ordered the Vietnamese vermicelli. The grilled pork was actually bland. The meat was not tender. Everything else in the dish was fine. In terms of service, when I walked in the man stared at me like he couldn't figure out why I was there. Given that it was lunch hour on a weekday, you'd think it's obvious I'm there to order food. I had to to greet HIM to get the ball rolling.

Ordered Tom Yum soup (only had Tofu, Mushrooms and Chicken). Wished it had noodles, bean sprouts and some shredded vegetables. Broth was good. Also, ordered Pad Thai which came in a small quantity. Not the best tasting in Orleans.

This was my first time eating at T-Basil. I really enjoyed it. The food was very good as was the service. I’d recommend this place.

Excellent, flavourful food. Pleasant ambience. Friendly service. Has both a patio and a private dining room for parties and special functions. Great place for a date, getting together with friends, or a meal with the family.

For ourirst time there we were very happy with the food service and ambiance. We will definitely be going back soon. Food was delicious and priced well. Great place go try it out.

I'm always happy with the food. Fresh and beautiful plating. A regular spot that I can count and get great service

Quiet, tasty food. Served hot. Fast and nice service.

A friend brought me here about a month ago and I love it

I will politely say that it was the worst restaurant food I've had. Freshly microwaved noodles and chicken like blobs. Accompanied by flies and a side of hair. This is the first time I leave a review and hope I never feel the need to do so again. On the bright side, the service was good!

My husband and I celebrated our anniversary with family and friends using T'Basil's party room. The food was excellent and the service wonderful. We'd definitely recommend this restaurant.

Solid, decent place for tasty Thai. Not extraordinary, but much better than other Thai/Pho places in Orleans. Went and just had a few appetizers and it was nice to see a really good peanut sauce for once in the east end. Also had the Tom Kha soup which was very good (although it had too much mushy tofu)

A great spot to get a cup of tea. The store has a huge wall of tea to pick from and the staff can help you create your own signature blend of tea or recreate your favorite discontinued tea. I'm a huge fan of their ice teas in the summer.

Awesome food. So fresh and delicious. Service was fast and friendly. Recommend a return visit. Tom yum was spicy and sweet. Crispy noodles were filled fresh veggies.

The food at T Basil is really good and it is one of my favourite restaurants in Orleans, but today I went in and it was obvious that it was a really slow day for them because the parking lot and restaurant was empty. I ordered the pad kee mow which I have had many times and is usually great, but today when I opened it up I was shocked at the portion size. It was typically half the size I used to get. So I checked my receipt and noticed that they also over charged me by $2 (it was on the menu for $11.95). Normally I wouldn't have cared about the $2 as long as there was a sufficient amount of food for the price. I guess I'm just disappointed that they would overcharge and cheap out on the portion just because it was a slow day. I hope this was just an off day.

Can't believe I never put a review for T'Basil. It's been one of my go to placed in Orleans for the past 2 years: the summer rolls with peanut sauce are great and the Pad Thai is excellent. So far, everything i've had there was good, prices are decent and service is good. I should try their breakfast menu one day...

Best dish in my opinion is the Green Curry, and I always ask for mock chicken (fried bean curd). It's scrumptious! Their service is friendly and fast, and they always say hi to my kids. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a Thai meal in Orleans.

Love this place! Vegetarian spicy noodle is my favourite (very spicy!). Great service. Not the fanciest but one of our go-to's for sure! Great prices. Yum!

Love the Thai Food. The papaya salad is my favorite at this restaurant and the Satay Deluxe is very good. Just the right spiciness (I like spicy!) and very flavorful. I was very pleasantly surprized by the food and have gone there several times.
Mike
Good food, good ambiance and very friendly service. Very clean and prices are reasonable. Good parking too.recommended.

It's an ok place for thai food but definitely not one of my favourites. The spring rolls were good but the pad thai was just ok. The noodles that they use are much bigger and thicker and they made me think of fettuccini noodles

I think this place compares to other similar restaurants food wise. I liked the chicken rolls and the spicy noodles (and yes, they really are spicy - unlike some places who tone down the spiciness). The decor is average, nothing fancy but better than a lot of other tired looking places. I also like that their menu is vietnamese (pho, etc.) and thai (curries). The service was good and the food was served hot. A decent place overall.

LOVE IT. When i first came in this restaurant I had no idea it would be this good!I come eat here very often lately, the vegetarian spring rolls are my favorite in town, really crispy, and the vegetables inside always taste so fresh. I always end up burning my tongue cause i cant wait to eat them !
my favorite dish so far is the noodles with basil sauce which I highly recommend, they herbs they use are so fresh and full of flavor!the breakfast is average,i think they have a fair price for it!
I'm glad they have quite few vegetarian choices too!
I also like this place because the staff is always friendly especially the owner !
It is a nice peaceful spot with a hint of zen, highly recommended

My spouse is a cordon Bleu chef. We thought the food was incredible. We've had amazing Thai before, but this takes the cake in Ottawa. And the service was so personal and perfect.

Amazing CHEF, amazing food. My family and I went into this Thai place and were immediately impressed with beautiful decor. We were hungry so we quickly ordered. We're vegetarians so we only looked at the vegetarian section at the back; there were a good 10 items so we happily ordered a few different things. However, we were told by the server that that everything had fish paste except for 2 of the noodle dishes. So we ordered 2 of each noodle dish VERY disappointingly.

BUT, a few minutes later, the owner and chef (Thuy) came out and said that she didn't want us to only eat 2 different things. She double checked what we could and couldn't eat and then made the dishes specially for us. We had the panang curry, satay noodles, crispy noodles, an eggplant dish and the basil noodles. Everything was sooooo good ESPECIALLY the basil noodles and panang curry. But what we remembered and appreciated MOST of all was the chef's thoughtfulness in coming out, talking with us, and making us food we could eat. That act has made T'Basil our new favorite Thai place. I highly recommend it :)

Good Thai food. I've been here a half dozen times. The Thai food is as good as most other places I've tried. It's consistent enough, anyway, that I always know I'll have a good meal if I go. I usually have pad thai when I go to Thai restaurants, so that's the yardstick I use for comparison.

There is enough seating in the restaurant that I've never seen it more than half full. We can even go at peak dinner hours when I assume that we'll have a problem getting a seat. It always bothered me a little bit that the restaurant *doesn't* get packed, since maybe the rest of the locals know something I don't. :) But even so, we've never had a bad meal here.

So very bland. "Beef with oyster sauce" should be a short-form expression for this kind of westernized, bland Thai and Malay food. A big disappointment, and we won't be back.
Kevin
The best place ever. It all started with my favourite appetizer(the spring rolls)
its mouth-watering taste when eat it with the sauce is
delicious.Next was a delectable entree,the pad thai.
Its tantilizing smell just makes it all the better.

Spicy seafood Pho was very tasty! Enjoyed my lunch very much and will tell my friends about T' Basil.

Not so hot... This place was o.k when it first opened but it has gone downhill. The dinner menu is much more limited and breakfast is awful.
BreakfastBabe
Go somewhere else for breakfast.. Just overpriced for the quality of food. My eggs weren't cooked properly, and I was really tempted to send their home fries back- they tasted like the potatoes were stale to begin with, and were then fried in really old oil. I took one bite and had to spit it back onto the plate. I tried another one in case that was a fluke- but it really, really wasn't. :(
John Purchase
Not really impressed with the quality of food.

Seafood Shabu-Shabu is recommended as are the desserts. No sticker shock when the bill is presented.
