Excellent staff, food and atmosphere. A Family of New Brunswick fishermen know their fish and this was excellent. I recommend the haddock in beer batter.
Such tasty fish and chips! I am allergic to gluten... so anything battered or fried is usually out. They have gluten free batter and a fryer dedicated to gluten free!!! So it was a real treat. It has a quaint seaside atmosphere and wonderful staff! I can hardly wait for my next visit to Ottawa.
I’ve been here 3 times within the past month. Haven’t been disappointed yet. The crab cakes are sinfully delicious. Beer-Battered Haddock was fabulous.
The Lifeboat Basa was excellent. It was Perfectly pan-seared and remains hot and juicy the entire time it was on my plate. Great friendly service with a smile really adds to the dining experience. Nice atmosphere. Interesting choice of folk music, but it suits the theme of the place.
I foresee myself venturing back to this little place a lot more in the future if they continue to serve the awesome food that I have been receiving each time I go.
First time there last night, won't be the last. Best fish and chips in Ottawa, Chrissie our server (and manager) was terrific. Terrific shrimp appetizer, the beer vattered haddock was sublime. Nice portion sizes, great prices.
Out of this world! Love the humble setting that belies the wonderful service and incredible fish & chips!! The haddock was perfect, the fries/gravy to die for, and the malt vinegar in a spray bottle ingenious. SO glad I searched out this gem while on travel from the U.S. 🇨🇦🍻
Such great food and good service!! Just had dinner there loved every bite! The commercial doesnt do it justice !
The best gluten free fish chips I've had yet! And the kids felt the same about their Sea Urchin versions as well. My husband had the First Mates Poutine, and kept saying how good it was after every bite. Thanks to 'Young Tim' for the awesome service. Great place for those with dietary restrictions/allergies. We'll definitely be going back again very soon!
Great food, including gluten-free. Could use more options in the GF beer area.
Good fish, I had haddock, my family had halibut, and the server was treat to chat with. Check it out, you won't leave hungry!
Best fish and chips ever! !! Light ..not greasy..cute little restaurant with super nice staff :)
Some of the best fish and chips I’ve had in a long time. Fast and friendly service.
Best fish n chips ever, We live Kansas City, Missouri and we return here every time we are in Ottawa, great service, great food !!!
Great little place. The fish and chips are top notch. Service was excellent ,the decor is east coast. I live in the west end so I can't say that it will be a place I will go to regularly but I will when I can.
I went here for Mother's Day with my family ( mom and brother) and it was incredible!! I had the beer battered fish and it was delicious though ( be warned) it crumbled into crumbs very easily. I also had the lemonade to drink which is swoon worthy, it's so sweet. We ate outside on the patio and I believe I will treasure the memory always because the atmosphere and the people made everything right. (Also, the decorations of the place are fantastic, from the boat steering wheel to the mermaid painted on the bathroom door to the newspaper under my fish).
Good fish and chips, fast service and decent price
BEST FISH AND CHIPS IN TOWN!. Honestly this is they best place to get fish and chips! The beer battered fish and chips are out of this world. The pieces of HADDOCK are massive. The fries are absolutely hand cut delicious. Granted this is the only thing I've gotten on the menu but why mess with a good thing. Service is fast, on time, and the service is great. You should check it out if you haven't been!
Great service to match the food!. We had dinner for two on a Sunday night. Tim, our server, was fantastic offering his suggestions on the menu and appetizers. The calamari was crispy, my tilapia was mouth watering and my boyfriends fish and newfie chips lived up to expectations. I would definitely go back. Great service, good food.
I don't know why there are so many negative comments about the service here! Everytime we have gone for dinner the servers are super friendly & service is fast. Fish and chips are unreal & the portions are huge. Will definitely be back!
Good place for Gliten Free Fish N Chips and Calamari!
French fries are excellent!!
Nice chippie! We don't have many in town and this one does a pretty good f&c, with mushy pies and a pint, what more to ask for? Cheers!
Really like it. Been drivi.... Really like it.
Been driving by Cats for a few years. Always meant to stop by and finally did.
So far one of the best fish and chips in Ottawa. Owner very friendly by the way.
Will come back with our kids in time. Their always looking for a good F&C joint.
Good!. Went for the first time last week to enjoy the sun on the patio. Had the fish n chips with the breadcrumb batter, and it was great! If you love your fish and chips but find beer batter too greasy at times it's a must try. Nice choices for beer on tap too.
I'll go back again for sure.
Went for lunch and had the beer battered one piece fish n chips. Great taste, fries were seasoned well. Coleslaw was creamy & flavourful. I will def return. My friend had the gluten free fish and said it was equal to down home!
Cozy little restaurant.. Had the two piece fish and chips, the batter was nice and light with two good size portions of fish. unfortunately the fries get a little soggy sitting under the fish.
Gluten free fish and chips. Last week, I heard an interview on CBC Radio One about Cat's Fish and Chips serving GF options. I called the restaurant to confirm that the fish and chips were fried in a dedicated frier. Well, we just had to give it a try.
We were pleasantly surprised yesterday evening when our food arrived.
The waitress was knowledgeable, and the head chef also spoke to us about what was available on the menu. There was a good selection, even for the kids...chicken fingers...the burger minus the bun...
The waitress pointed out that they had 2 vinegars on the table, one of which was malt vinegar, and contained gluten.
We started with gluten free calamari which was pleasantly spiced. My kids gobbled it up. Both kids ordered the GF fish and chips. It was crispy on the outside, and tender on the inside. The fish was very tasty as were the fries. Creamy coleslaw and a pickle also accompanied the meal. My son declared it the best restaurant ever. We rang the bell on the way out to signal that the meal was good.
The staff were very friendly, attentive and the service was fast. Water glasses filled throughout the meal. This diner style restaurant measures up in my book. Decor was fun, & bathrooms clean.
I would recommend this restaurant for Gluten Free diners.
Great little place. Beer was really cold and the first Tuesday of the month there is a live band. My wife and I found it a relaxing place to have an intimate dinner
WOW!! Gluten-Free Fish & Chips!!!. This was the first time I've had fish and chips since I was diagnosed with celiac, and I've had some home-made breaded fish in the past few years which were disappointing.
But here's a professional fish and chips place that not only uses GF breadcrumbs for the fish, but also has a dedicated GF fryer for the fries as well!! It was FANTASTIC. I ordered 1 piece cautiously, but had to order another soon after cutting into the first. It was perfect: crispy on the outside, moist and flaky on the inside, and the flavour was the best I have had for as long as I can remember.
And the fries were wedge-style, nice and crispy with the skin on them... not the mass-produced kind you might get at other fish and chip places.
Supper was complimented nicely with Coke in a classic glass bottle, opened at our table... much nicer than fountain drinks and classier than a can.
Will definitely be returning and will be bringing as many friends and family as possible!
YAR!. I have been seeing this place get busier and busier, plus it look inviting from outside, plus I love fish and chips, so I had to go, and I did yesterday. I loved the whole nautical theme, and the cute little vinegar spray bottles. The mood was great, service was fast and friendly, and Dave who runs the place with his wife Cat was fun to talk with. I had the Cutlass Haddock, very nice fish and chips; best I've had in town. There was an amazing list of desserts on the menu, I plan to check those out on my next visit. Definitely going back again :)
Good.. I went here with my girlfriend and we both enjoyed it. A tad on the expensive side (was it 16 bucks for two pieces of fish and a small pile of fries?) but what it's super expensive these days anyways. The fish was good, I had both the beer battered and the other option. The fish itself was delicious but I was disappointed with the batter. When I order beer battered fish I expect thick, crunchy batter. This batter was paper thin, soggy and ended up falling off of the fish. It still tasted great, but that's not what battered fish is supposed to be like. Also, I really feel as though the cole slaw recipe needs some work. FAR too creamy, not enough flavour. It just didn't taste... right. Sort of metallic. Fries were excellent.Overall I'd probably go again. Great but room for improvement.
Thanks!
PS
in response to the person who wrote the terrible review and says the spray bottles are ghetto: they are cute. they are new, clean and small coloured ones. not cheap looking spray bottles. I don't think this person understood the whole vibe of the place. "I was not even offered a wine list!!!" Get over yourself.
Excellent fish and chips. Have been there twice. First time was great but could not sit out on the patio due to not having a license to serv liqueur. Second time they had their licence. Great food, good service and price is right.
Excellent Fish. We really enjoyed the environment. We were sitting out on the patio on a beautiful day, and we had the fish and chips. The service was excellent and it was very enjoyable. Our server treated us very well and we felt very welcomed to the restaurant.
The menu was not what I had expected, but very interesting and fun. The cutlass haddock was very very delicious, and was cooked to perfection. If you like spicy chips, this is one of the places you would like to go. The fish was very crispy on the outside and steaming in the middle. The chipotle spices were a nice touch to have.
Everything was excellent and we will be returning, and recommend to our friends and family,
-Mark and Leslie
Amazing. best fish and chips in Ottawa. Wonderful customer service.
have the life ring for dessert, trust me.
They have done an incredible job of remaking this place. Food was ok for the price. I am sure this place will do well.
Really good! Great people et service! Very tasty miammm
I was looking for a new place for lunch, and I came across this video where “Skipper Dave” and “First Mate Cat” were introducing us to the delicacies served at Cat’s Fish & Chips . Fish & Chips is a great lunch item – so that’s what I suggested to Mel and we made our way to Vanier. Cat’s Fish & Chips opened in May 2012 and rapidly made their mark, winning Metro’s Choice Awards for Best Fish & Chips and Best Takeout in December. The building, located at St-Laurent and Hemlock and previously housing the Rockliff Bistro, is newly renovated and repainted in a nice sky blue colour, with a nautical-theme décor. The spot is laid back and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Inside, Emerald was waiting for us, telling us we had to wait to be seated.
