Review 36 Pho Viet Cuisine - Ottawa

William Lavigne
I had a wonderful dinner this evening with the girlfriend at 36 pho Viet. The atmosphere was very relaxing and calm the background music wasn't too loud and a very tasteful lofi jazz. It wasn't that busy when we arrived but as we were eating it got pretty busy but I'm happy to say our server was as attentive from the start till the end. We started dinner with a pork skewer and they were perfectly cooked and very juicy. The soups came shortly after and we're still very hot smelled Amazing.. they came with a side of bean sprouts and some lemon which was a great addition. We ended the meal with the pickled lime soda and we were warned it was quite salty. But still very sweet as well. We didn't finish it but I'm sure if you had a couple shots of tequila it would be a great end to a wonderful meal.

We had the most welcoming experience. Having moved from Vancouver and trying many Vietnamese places, this was on par with the good ones. The food is good and service impeccable. We had the pho and spring rolls which were delicious. The pho broth is more on the milder side and more sweet. It is clean tasting and doesn't have that msg feel that some restaurants add in. The owner was very gracious and attentive. The location has a good amount of parking as well which is a bonus. There's ample sitting in the restaurant so finding space for a group shouldn't be an issue. Overall, it was a good experience.

Very friendly and super tasty food! I find their food very flavorful. This is their takeout for tofu pad thai. Their tofu is soft but has a lovely exterior, a nice crunch to the veggies and noodles are always perfectly cooked! I strongly recommend them!

When you first walk into 36 Pho Viet, you'll notice that it doesn't look like your typical pho restaurant. Decked in sleek dark furniture, the restaurant's ambience is a step-up from its counterparts. However, while it differs in appearance, the food here tastes very similar to other pho restaurants. The only differences lie in the portion sizes (which are a tad smaller) and the prices (which are a tad steeper although still inexpensive). To their defense though, they are one of few pho restaurants in the area so perhaps the prices are competitive. Along with the furnishing, the quick and personable service adds to the classy ambience of the restaurant. Overall, it's a decent pho restaurant and a good option for an inexpensive (first?) date. I'll most likely be back, if not just for the lack of choices in the area.

Nice decor, good menu selection, and friendly staff. Hot soup (which tend to overcook the noodles) could be a bit saltier.

Very nice and comfy place. Very tasty food, friendly staff. Good price for what you get.

The food and service here is absolutely amazing. I would highly recommend 74 and 35 on the menu if you haven't tried it.

Amazing soups here. I always order no noodles and extra veg and they are very accommodating!

Excellent pho, but not only just that, other mains are delicious such as the specialty pad Thai. Great atmosphere, one of the classier viet places.

I'd say it's a pretty average pho place. Service was fine, but nothing exceptional. Pho itself was totally average. I'm pretty sure I was overcharged for my meal as well. Probably wouldn't go back, but it wasn't really bad either.

Vietnamese food has always been my main comfort food, and I personally think that this place is one of my favorite places to go because it's close to my home and it's delicious. The beef broth tastes so delicious, and the aroma of it is amazing. The chefs really know what they are doing.

I also think the Bun Thit Nuong is very delicious. The pork was marinated perfectly, and the nuoc mam is actually decent. Some other places, i find their nuoc mam very bland and has way too much water, and you could barely taste it. But here, the nuoc mam has the perfect amount of ingredients to it.

Thank you for your delicious meals and service, I will definitely return.

Haven't been back since last winter. We went there a handful of times and it was an ok experience. Broth for the pho is kind of on the salty side but it is good.

The last time we went they kept us waiting for 40 minutes for two bowls of pho. We were the only ones in the restaurant from start to finish. Was a little hard to get their attention (servers) for refills of water while they were eating their own food.

very slow and not delicious... wait for half an hour for just regular noodle soup, and the meat is in quite small amount... the wrap of the rolls are getting old and hard to chew...

This place is awesome. I've never had a bad experience here - the brisket beef hue is so delicious. Someone else below said the soup was greasy... it has oil yes, but that's what makes it satisfying and home-made. The broths you can tell are well made and cooked for hours, not watery or from some kind of soup stock package.

Best peanut sauce ever with their fresh-rolls.

Not bad, but not impressive. The salad rolls were average and the broth in the pho was a little greasy. The restaurant has a very nice atmosphere, the staff was very friendly and efficient. While I might not go out of my way, I would try it again.

I went here and tried their chicken pho. Highly unimpressed. The broth was flavourless, and somehow, the chicken in was actually dry. How you manage to get dry chicken in soup, I have no idea. The service was about average for Vietnamese restaurants.

I wouldn't bother going back.

A mixed bag. Our first time there we had great service from a nice woman. She was quick and nice.

Third & final time there, a male and female server were rude and inattentive. We were the only ones in the restaurant and we waited over half an hour while sitting there watching them talk and eat. We didn't even get our water until we bugged them to pay attention. Will never go back again, service like that is enough to make me not want to risk being that infuriated again.

Thou the soup was great, there was little meat in the bowl... Noodles were enough so you could get full, but the service was very slow.

Good food, good environment. Thumb up for the rice wrap, hue style beef noodle, house-made grilled pork to eat with fish sauce!! Their stir-fries are amazing too!! You will have no regret when you dine in

Stands out in Ottawa. For a city that has a million choices for Vietnamese, this stands out as one of the best I've ever had. The pork salad wraps were incredible, fantastic peanut sauce, and one of the best bowls of pho I've ever had. Looks very nice and well furnished inside, very polite service, and awesome food!

Fantastic. The new owners who took over the old Pho Maxim have done a terrific job in updating and upgrading the décor, service and food. The Phos are delicious. My favorite dish is the Bun Cha-if you like pork you must try this duo of grilled meat and the house special pork patties. Service is very friendly.

No complaints. I only have pros to share about this place!
-awesome, personable service (e.g. listens to interests, makes informed suggestions; knows menu inside and out).
-quick, thoughtful takeout (e.g. didn't have to ask for napkins/cutlery, packaging was secure).
-portion sizes are generous! try the crispy noodle dishes, they're amazing and enough for two at lunch.
-decor/setting is perfect; relaxing; nice quiet place.
-food is seasoned well, always hot and fresh; super delicious!

highly recommend for lunch and takeout

Nice food and service. It has become our Friday night staple as good Chinese, Vietnamese or Thai food are hard to find in Ottawa. Coming from London, UK, with so many choices, I have been disappointed with everything tried in Ottawa till we came a across this restaurant. Not bad and good value for money.

I love this place! The service is great and very personable. The food is fantastic, we had the pho, vermicelli bun, pad thai, general tao chicken. ..all dishes are presented well, the flavors are simple and clean yet sooo tasty. This Vietnamese restaurant is a treat all around, not to mention the great ambiance and decor. I dont live anywhere near this place but its the only Vietnamese restaurant I will visit.

Good but..... First off, I've never been to a Viet restaurent where you have to pay for tea..... The prices for the Pho are quite high compared to other places for what you get and the fact that they go from a medium to an extra large seems like an excuse to charge more based on the listed size not the quantity . I ordered the XL and found that it was actually less food then a few of my regular places serve as their medium for $3 less. The broth was tasty but nothing special. As an alternantive I would recommend Pho Bo Ga 1 (Lebreton st @ Somerset), suprisingly fast to get to from the Baseline & Merivale area, the quality and portions are great and the service is very fast. Wait time is 5-10 minutes. I found that Silver Spoon thai (Carling & Maitland) also had better quality and was priced approprialty.

I'm not sure if I would go back to @36, there are so many options for this style of cooking now and they are overpriced for no reason.

Great Pho!. I've been here twice for lunch with friends. We really enjoy the pho and spring rolls. The taste is great and the portions are big. The staff are friendly and provide excellent customer service. The restaurant is decorated nicely which provides a good atmosphere. I've tried other restaurants for pho such as Pho Thi but I prefer @ 36 Pho Viet Cuisine. I will definitely be back!

One of our favourites. My husband and I love this restaurant. We try something different every time we come in, and haven't had a bad meal yet.

- service is excellent- very friendly and knowledgeable.
- prices are fair
- atmosphere is comfortable
- great portion size
- favourite place for pad thai

I highly recommend this restaurant!

Great Ambience & Good Food. I have been to this restaurant many times since the change over from Pho Maxim previously. My wife and I definitely rate the food highly, especially the Pho Hue, which is spicily flavored to be enjoyed thoroughly, spoonful by spoonful! It reminds us something close to an authentic Malaysian curry noodle soup! Much better than the food offered from across the street!! No kidding! The place has very nice décor going and offers a more conducive environment to sit and enjoy a meal than most other crowded Pho places, except that the booth seats are a little low for smaller-built clients. I agree that they should not charge for the tea which can be a put off for most customers. They should know that this is not a high end restaurant and most customers are more than willing to put enough tips to make up for the cost of the tea. Other than that, the food are delicious and need to be discovered by more people via advertisement!
James
Slow service. - Food was ok but portions were smaller than what they used to be.
- Service was very, very slow. They need more than one waiter.
- Charged us for tea. Since when do you get charged for tea?!
- No spoons, no hot sauce, etc

There is another new menu just up in the past few weeks. The new curry chicken dish has perhaps too many veggies and perhaps too little chicken but the curry is just excellent and better than some other local places. A great improvement. Next time I'll try the General Tso's chicken which is also a new menu item, and looks very good.

New menu sucks. I loved the old Pho Maxim it was great. I'd go twice a week. My favorite dish was the sate with beef. It was super delicious. But alas the old owner retired and sold the business to this guy that owns Ha Noi Pho in Orleans. Much like Ha Noi the new owner made the restaurant look fantastic. Also, much like Ha Noi the food servings are minimal, the flavour is minimal and the menu is minimal. The beautiful decor can't save the mediocrity of the menu. I miss the old Pho Maxim and owner.

Food lacks taste and quality. Prices higher than old Pho Maxim and the quality went down. I ordered a #13 and there were very few pieces of meat and the pieces that were in there were of clearly low quality (pure fat pieces/discolored mean). I ended up only eating about 1/3rd of their large. I mentioned it to the manager at cash and she just said that she would let the chef know. Empty gesture. The service is actually decent - that one redeeming quality will not bring me back. Too bad because pho maxim was decent for a close pho alternative vs driving to Chinatown.

They have updated the decor and the menu. However the dishes are lacking inevery capacity. Across the street you will find something slightly better. Service is excellent though. I preferred the old menu and decor.

New Management. I returned to Pho Maxim now that the renovations are finished. First thing is that the restaurant is under new management. The name will be changing shortly. When we walked in, we immediately noticed the new decor. They have done a great job at sprucing the place up. It's much cozier than before. One of the things that I loved about the old place was the tea that was provided as soon as we sat down. That is gone. I could hear many of the old customers mentioning the same thing.

The menu is much smaller than under the old regime. The owner mentioned that the menu will be getting bigger. I am not sure why they could not have opened with the complete menu. We ordered roast pork on vermicelli (one of our favorites in the old Maxim number 402). When the food came, we could tell that it wasn't what we were accustomed to eating. The plate lacked nuts, spices, marinated carrots and overall taste. It was rather bland. The old Pho Maxim was never the best place to get Pho but it was quite good. Last thing, the prices are higher under the new management. When looking at quality and price, I don't believe I will be returning.

Pretty good. I enjoyed my meal. The service was excellent. They accomodated my dietary restrictions with ease. My husbands meal was not to his favour and they gladly took it back, making it spicier based on a comment overheard between us. The prices were reasonable. My children love this restaurant for the special attention they receive by the servers and they love the milder food. There is a large menu, and out of the 5 or so times I have eaten here, I'd say 4/5 times I have enjoyed my meal. This is not my favourite restaurant for Pho, but being so close to home, the service and convenience outway the less then perfect flavours.

Great service. The food is lacking. Some dishes cheap on seasoning and vegetables. I've been a few times and have received burnt food twice. Overall okay. Not a nightmare.

Tasty and Healthy!. Pho Maxim definitely brings to the table what it sets forth. Healthy low fat dishes and soups made out of fresh ingredients. The Pho broth is definitely the best one I've had in Ottawa so far. I make sure to have a meal there at least once a week!
Good atmosphere, great prices, the only down side, is that sometimes the noodles are stuck together... Not so convenient and a bit messy.. You don't have a first date there (or at any Pho restaurant for all that matters) ;)

Amazing and affordable Pho in the west end. Try dish no. 603 for some spice- tasty!!!
