Review Bread By Us - Ottawa

Oh my goodness... The pastries were DELICIOUS! (*chef kiss*). They were fresh and flakey and buttery! That blueberry danish was huge! And those blueberries were so fresh even though it was not blueberry season! The banana muffin was dense and MOIST (most important quality in a muffin). Not too sweet, so the banana flavour was very present. I highly recommend taking the jam bun! It's like a pastry roll filled with a fruity jam YUMMY. The cheese and almond/maple croissants didn't taste much in their flavours but they do respect their categories of sweet and savoury in comparison to the original butter croissant.

Would give 7 stars if I could. Thank you so much for keeping the art alive so to say and providing real, good bread. I hope there will always be bakeries like yours and humanity will never see the day when there’s nothing left but Costco and big chain grocery stores.

Every time I visit Bread By Us I have a great experience! The staff is just lovely and very helpful; and the breads, coffee, and pastries are all delicious (the jam buns being my personal fav)!

This is good bread. I tried the country sourdough. Unlike many other bakeries, they score their loaves crosswise rather than lengthwise, giving it a dramatic, flourishing appearance. The bread has a nice, dark crust. One thing to note is that while the crumb is very open, indicating a well fermented dough, it is still very substantial and full. The taste is all there; tangy, earthy, slightly bitter with a fleeting note of sweetness. It is exactly how you want bread to taste. The only (minor) drawback is that the crust is not all that crusty, and is rather flimsy as opposed to robust and crispy. I have not tried anything else here, but I would not hesitate to. The staff were very friendly and the price reflected the quality of the product.

Since the moment I walked in into this place I fell in love . The smell of fresh bread, the coziness literally everything. I ordered their pan de muertos during the October month and I’m in love. So fresh , so unique a good . I’m happy to discover this place , staff was so kind .

Bread By Us is an excellent bakery in the heart of Hintonburg. Can't say enough about the quality of the pastries and breads....so many favourites to choose from including jam buns, scones and cookies. The breads are perfection and freeze beautifully so you can stock up. Appreciate the friendly and knowledgeable staff, and the strong felt sense of caring community this lovely gem of a business embodies.

Great establishment and have a wide variety of pastries, bread, and pantry items to select from. Their croissants are great quality, only complaint is that in the Maple Almond Croissant I can barely taste the almond or maple, I saw the almond filling but I do enjoy a bit of almond extract in the filling.

Made a big order for Friday online, ordering half their bread selection. All to die for from sandwich bread to beautiful sour dough and much more! Simple and easy to use plate form online! Communication was excellent with pick up times! Everything was fresh and warm! Very well organized. Thank you so much for the fantastic bread!

Best artisan bakery in the city! They serve a wide range of the tastiest baked goods, have kind and hard working staff, incredibly fair prices, a darling place to grab espresso or pick between the many quality teas, and hosts a warm environment. Owners and staff a true, active supporters of the community. I pretty well stopped eating bread when they went through renovations! #neverleaveus <3

Besides it being the best bread in town, this place have some of the best cookies I have ever had. The coffee also is amazing and the whole place is socially responsible. Also as a bonus, the owners are amazing people!!

Some of the best bread, pastries, and coffee I've had in my life! Definitely recommend. If you're visiting Ottawa, it's well worth the trip to this cozy spot just outside downtown.

everything is amazing! my heart definitely has a very special place for their hazelnut latte <3 i mean, they use REAL hazelnut butter!!! the flavor is rich & delightful, the drink is filling and energizing.

As I sit at the bar-top table, enjoying a decadent hazelnut latte, I can't help but think that Bread By Us is warm, welcoming, and an absolute gem in the Hintonburg community. I'm lucky enough to work close by (unlucky for my wallet ), and have tried everything from the different breads, pastries, hot and cold drinks and even the Bue Grasso pasta - and everything knocks it out of the park! Love the suspended program and try to 'donate' at least every second time I visit. Love Bread By Us!

Such a fantastic bakery and espresso bar. I love trying something new (except I always get the same cookie) and the staff always give amazing drink recommendations.

Wonderful focaccia and really pleasant staff. A common stop on weekends for a carb fix :)
Rodrigo Andres Castro
The coffee is fantastic but my favourite are the baked goods. They change some up based on days of the week so it never gets boring or repetitive.

My favorite bakery and tea/coffee shop ever. Seriously, it can't be beat.

Sourdough is delicious! If you're looking for a sweet treat try a snail - delicious cinnamon rolled into croissant dough. The staff is always warm and welcoming. Check out their suspended program - you can pre purchase bread, coffee, etc for someone who may not otherwise be able to afford it

We just love this bakery. Newly renovated brings in lots of light to add to the delicious smells. Coffee is excellent. Wonderful breads and great service.
Bozica Costigliola
One of my absolute favourites. Everything I've tried is fantastic--the breads, cornbread, sandwiches, cinammon buns, coffee. And the people are great too.

Thanks so much for coming to Hintonburg. Now we have a real neighbourhood, and the best bread in town.
Madina Salatova
One of my favourite places in Ottawa. I love the country sourdough bread, their grilled cheese and the earl grey scone. The cookies are also amazing

Great small spot in trendy Hintonburg. Hands down the best cheese croissant in Ottawa. You won’t regret it. Get there early because they do sell out!
Stephanie White
A wonderful bakery that a limited selection of different loaves of bread and pastries. If you are looking to learn how to make bread they also offer classes.

Another rare gem within a 500+km radius; one of the few bakeries or cafés that bake and brew beautifully. Whether its sourdough (my favourite), cortado, hibiscus juice or any one of an expanding menu of baked goods I can savour morning, at lunch or mid-afternoon, I am always satisfied (since first discovering BBU in 2014).

Great variety of pastries and breads, always fresh and delicious! There isn't much room to sit and enjoy your beverage and treat though. Great addition to the Hintonburg area!

Ordered the Smoke meat sandwich. When I got it the bread was quite soggy. And the sauerkraut was only in the middle of the sandwich and not spread out like it should be. The amount of smoke meat left a lot to be desired as well, especially for $8.50 plus tax. Definitely would not buy again. When you pay that much for a sandwich at one of these "trendy" places there should be some quality and substance to the sandwich. This had neither.

That we can have such a perfect coffee-and-pastry breakfast here in Ottawa is a true privilege. Even if you flew to Europe, you'd be hard pressed to get such a delicious cortado and almond croissant at the same place. Absolutely top notch!

This is my bakery of choice in Ottawa. The selection of excellent breads and fantastic pastries is relatively small but very well executed.

Bread By Us - Artisan Bakery - Turned down my business. I got up early Saturday morning as we had out of town guest visiting and I wanted to buy 9 cinnamon snails. I was told there was a limit of 6 per customer. I explained we had guests in and I wanted to have enough snails. Nope, could only sell me six. Iron clad rule.

I arrived early, I was willing to pay, but they were saving the extra 3 snails for someone else, who did not make the effort that I did. I guess I could have brought my wife and she could have bought 3 more.

I can't understand the business strategy behind this. Maybe if you have to limit quantities, you are not making enough.

You lost my business. And maybe the three snails you would not sell me, never sold....

BEST AMERICANOs IN OTTAWA. I Love their Americanos!! I used to go to Bridgehead for these but there is just something special about how Bread by Us makes theirs. Their almond cookies, snails, and chewy double chocolate are amazing! I had pizza at one of their events which was out of this world!

Super friendly staff, great values, delicious quality products!

A true gem!. Just recently discovered this new bakery and they make fantastic bread! Their sandwiches, specialty coffees, and other patisseries are so delicious and truly authentic. I love their philosophy of helping others by buying something in advance for someone you've never met but who needs a helping hand.Oh, and the décor is fun and artistic, the service is great and personable. Will be back very soon...

Bad experience, won't return.. I was excited to try this place as I live close by but wow, what a letdown. I walked in and there was only one other customer sitting at the counter sipping on a coffee. I wasn't greeted, no smiles, no offer to tell me about their bread or coffee...nothing. I asked if the unidentified sample was their sourdough, and the girl working said: it's the brioche. Again, no smile, no offer to explain to me what a brioche was...nada. I had intended on buying bread but decided against it given the staff's attitude. I then ordered a cappuccino and a croissant because I had no time to go somewhere else. The guy wasn't sure how to use the machine so it took a long time, but I was patient. When I finally got it, I asked for cinnamon and raw sugar and I was given a dirty look and told they didn't have any. It was as though I had asked for something really odd...well, I have never been to an espresso bar that didn't have raw sugar or cinnamon. The croissant was just OK...nothing special. During the whole time I was there, the staff spoke to the girl sitting at the counter and totally ignored me. What a pity for a brand new place that the staff take no pride in it. If you want the totally opposite experience, head over to A Taste for Chocolate further up on Wellington. The owner is warm, welcoming and keen on telling you about his food. He has a love for what he does and that makes all the difference in the world! :)

Very nice little shop. I love that they have the "Suspended" program to help the less fortunate

Wonderful new Bakery In the heart of Hintonburgh. "Bread by Us" is a lovely new bakery just opened in Hintonburgh. They're located at the corner of Merton and Wellington Street west in the old Carbon computing building. They have a wonderful bright space, with comfortable chairs and loungers, a perfect place to stop in for coffee and a chat. The staff is wonderful, friendly and knowledgeable about their breads and other treats. The organic sourdough is a perfect mix of crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. Their simple but complex flavours will please even the pickiest pallet. They're part of the "suspended" coffee programs, giving back to those less fortunate with holding coffees/other products for those in need, a absolutely awe inspiring new movement. Overall this a very provocative new shop in the heart of Hintonburgh, their sustainability and focus on living wages makes this a must visit place! I'm sure I will be back again and again.
Cuiscenes
Bread By Us is an artisan bakery and espresso bar, outputting small batches of their organic sourdough breads all throughout the day--they even tweet whenever a new batch comes out so you know when to drop by for the freshest bread. Local Capicola, Roasted Garlic, Mayo, Swiss, and Greens Sandwich ($8) Upon the server's suggestion we ordered their Local Capicola, Roasted Garlic, Mayo, Swiss, and Greens ($8) sandwich along with the French Toast Espresso ($3.15). The sandwich was definitely one of the better paninis we've had but although it's a bakery, the espresso stood out more than the sandwich. The drink had a layer of maple syrup, espresso, maple cream, and cinnamon sprinkles--you could taste the Canadian in it. Their bread alone is reason enough to visit but it doesn't hurt that they also have a damn good espresso bar with delectable pastries to boot.
One Of Ottawa's Real Foodies
The much anticipated new small-batch bakery, Bread By Us, opened just a day or two before Christmas. It's located at 1065 Wellington Street West - almost across from the Hintonburg Community Centre. The official GRAND OPENING for the sourdough-focused organic bakery will be this weekend on both Saturday and Sunday. Mark the date. January 11 and 12 from 8 am to 5 pm. You really must go. The place has been selling their many temptations to rave reviews so far. Yesterday I popped in to pick up a loaf of their Country Sourdough. Customers streamed in steadily behind me. Their other bread offerings (though not every day) include: baguettes, focaccia, whole wheat, olive, burger buns, seed, ciabatta, brioche. Their sweet treats include: cookies, croissants, cinnamon buns, almondines, scones. Sandwiches are served at Noon. The sidewalk sandwich board shares their daily offerings, including what time you can expect each option to come from the ovens and nestled in their baskets at the front
