This place and its experience made Ethiopia as one of the next places I want to visit. Varied, tasty buffet with many spice level options. Lots of vegetarian option with a chicken and a beef option too. HUGE wine pours. But the best is the experience of having fresh, green coffee beans toasted and brewed right in front of you with their coffee ceremony to wrap up the evening. The owner is a pleasure to chat with while the beans are roasting and stories begin to float back and forth over the coffee steam. We were very pleasantly surprised at the affordable bill at the end. Highly recommended.
A good atmosphere, variety of vegetarian dishes and very sweet servers. For the price, its a great place to go to & their coffee is DELISH!! Loving the Ethiopian culture already.
amazing food, amazing value. The vegetarian buffet is to die for, and Hareg is such a sweet little nook of a place. authentic, adorable, and delicious xx
Yum! What a pleasant surprise!. My husband and I went to Hareg, an Ethiopian restaurant in the Glebe, for dinner with another couple last night. I have to say the food was AMAZING! The girls got the veg buffet (which was $9.99... wow!) and the men got the meat buffet ($12.99). The veg buffet is 100% vegan and the injera is vegan/gluten free. The food was SO GOOD, but the best part was the Ethiopian coffee we had at the end, where our server talked about the traditions in her home country while showing us the steps, from roasting the beans to pouring and tasting the coffee. We felt like we were on vacation in Ethiopia! All 4 of us highly recommend Hareg.
YUM!. The food at Hareg is amazing and the staff are so kind. They are a veg-friendly restaurant, but also serve meat, and their injera is gluten free. Their prices are totally reasonable as well. Order from the menu, or go on Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Saturdays, for the buffet. Either way, you can't go wrong - it's all really delicious and satisfying. Try it! You'll be happy you did!
YUMMERS!. 1) veggie/vegan friendly (but will also have meat!)
2) Gluten-free injera
3) incredibly nice people working there
4) Coffee roasted in house under a beautiful awning
5) instead of salt and pepper - they got berbere and something else on the table
6) YUMMMERS!
Warning: I was full after only one plateful of the buffet - but it was worth every single bite.
Vegetarian plate and coffee. Fell in love with the veggie plate and just tried the Friday night coffee service. Both great. They now also have vegetarian buffet on Tuesday and Thursday with the same items as on veggie plate. So delicious. Great lentils and spinach. I can't believe this place isn't more busy. Go Now!
Strong Coffee - Very Good Food - Great Prices.. Great Ethiopian hole in the wall and very un-Glebe like. A ton of food for dirt cheap prices. Menu is always changing but I recommend the traditional African coffee and Tibbs(?).
The best Ethiopian and Eritrean cuisine in the city!. I have been visiting this restaurant ever since CBC Ottawa did a piece on this hole-in-the-wall in the summer (http://www.cbc.ca/allinaday/2013/06/26/d-is-for-dinner-ethiopian-dishes-from-hareg-cafe/). I am amazed at the copious amounts of flavors emitted from Hareg’s Ethiopian and Eritrean cuisine which blows any of the other East African restaurants (Horn of Africa, Blue Nile, ect.) that butcher their dishes to please Canadian tame taste buds. I can’t say enough of this restaurant and drag all my friends there to try some out of this world food. He can even make a very fine cup of cappuccino using Ethiopian beans which many of my friends remark as one of the best in The Glebe. I highly recommend that you visit this place if you want to try something that is not very Glebe-like.
You don't have to believe me, just look at all the East-African taxi drivers have an authentic lunch or dinner there.
(PS. On Saturday he cooks traditional raw beef dishes which I am dying to try).
Excellent Ethiopian Food!. My partner and I almost missed this gem because it doesn't look much like a restaurant from the outside, but it was the best Ethiopian Food I've had in Ottawa and I've been to all the other Ethiopian restaurants in town. The food was fresh and tasty, we were offered a condiment tray as well, and the portions were quite generous. We will be back!
