To all of my vegetarian/vegan friends to all of my borderline carnivore comrades here in Ottawa:
If you're looking to try something new, healthy, and absolutely delicious you have to check out Habesha Resraurant at 99 Montreal Rd. Ethiopian has been one of my absolute favorite cuisines for over 14 years now and Habesha has been my go to for my fixes for the past 4 years. The owners are so kind and they offer such high-quality, flavourful and nutritious food all at an extremely reasonable price.
If you're a vegetarian (not 100% sure if vegan) you have to try out their Vegetarian Platter quickly snapped with my iPhone above.
If you're hangry for some of the most succulent and savory meat you've ever had? Be sure to ask for the Lamb Tibs.
Either way be prepared to get your fingers messy because you eat these mounds of deliciousness with you hands by wrapping them up in a pancake type wrap called injera. If you like it spicy like me, be sure to ask for berber too!
If you're in a rush, this isn't the place to come. They make everything from scratch and I usually wait over half an hour to get my food eating on. But if you have good company, a good book, or some work to do, this is one heck of a gem to get your tastebuds on!
Āmeseginalehu Habesha!
Excellent food at great prices, and the friendliest service in town. It's always a great time at Habesha!
It feels like i am in addis when i ate the food there. Love all the menu specially the kifo.
I've been here many times and loved it every time. The food is amazing. The owners are so incredibly friendly.
Simply Excellent. The atmosphere, service, and quality of the food is top quality
Delicious food and great, friendly service! Will definitely be eating here again!
Amazing Ethiopian food in a small, cozy setting. The platters are huge - although they can be shared, they can easily satisfy a very hungry stomach as well. The food is flavourful, the bread is plentiful and it's all around good meal. They also have parking in the back, which is a nice added bonus. Absolutely love this place.
Great food for a great price. I payed 9.99 for a selection of 5 dishes and I was full after eating. Cheap beer as well and very authentic food! No forks also which was really cool!
The restaurant was definitely small but really intimate. Although we were seated in the back the food was delicious! It's definitely a place you'd go to share. We had the lamb meet (sautéed lamb with Garlic, onion, tomato, and jalapeño pepper infused with herbal spiced butter). We ordered that with the habesha platter (selected combination of beef & veggies with Doro Wat (National dish prepared with tender chicken, hard boiled eggs, cooked with hot spicy pepper, flavoured with butter)). Incredibly delicious, the flavour was so vibrant we ended up ordering a second round!! To top it off the service was great other than the small area I'll definitely be back (so possibly make sure to book ahead) !! I highly recommend this place!

Habesha is very comfortable, casual, delicious & friendly. Generous portions and they happily bring second helpings. Thank you / Amesegenalgo.
One of my favourite restaurants. The mixed platter is great for variety. Stealing the show is the #6 rare - spiced ground beef; its better than tartar & possibly sushi.
We left our B&B looking for a good meal. This is a wee little place that you can easily miss. When walking in, the place has 6 tables (later discovered there are more in the back). We ordered a chicken and a lamb dish which were presented on a large platter along with a salad and Naan like bread that's used to eat the meal with. We were very pleased with our meal, but the wait seemed a bit long (reflected in my 3.5). No silverware here which isn't a problem. Last page of the menu gives instructions on how to eat with supplied 'naan'. Awesome little place, great experience, great food!
Probably the best Ethiopian in Ottawa. The veggie platter serves 2 well, and has a ton of flavor. Will get again! The service was very slow, however, so don't be in a rush for your dinner. If getting takeaway, def call ahead.
Great deal on great food. This place offers a great atmosphere and for someone who was new to this type of cuisine a lot of empathy for not always knowing what to do.
ጣፋጭ = DELICIOUS!. My family and I have eaten here for years. We have brought friends of all ages and cultures and everyone has said the same, absolutely delicious. This family owned restaurant is always quiet and the atmosphere is comfortable. The food is authentic (having been to Ethiopia many times and my mother-in-law still lives there) and the service is always friendly. Be prepared to wait a bit for your food but it is well worth the wait! The Habesha platter with zil-zil tibs and spiced tea is our go-to meal! Reasonably priced, hot, flavorful and authentic!
As good as expected. I agree with previous reviewers - a little hole in the wall with awesome food and good service. Took about 15 minutes from ordering to receiving food, but came out hot and fresh. The Habesha Platter (now $13) is definitely the way to go - great variety, and 2 platters fed 3 adult men. I will probably return the next time I'm in Ottawa.
Great Ethiopian. I have been to Habesha a couple of times. Ordered the veggie combo and also ordered side of misir wat / yemisir wat(red lentils in berbere spice). This is the best ethiopian restaurant I have been to in Ottawa. The misir wat is probably the best ive ever had or 2nd best ive had its awesome! Perfectly spiced for me!
I just wish the portions were a bit bigger..
Also asked the guy on the phone if the spinach dish was in the veggie combo he said it wasn't and it was. ( i usually ask them to skip the spinach one cus I find it kind of boring.. )
Great food and friendly hosts. My girlfriend and I ate at Habesha for the first time, and it was a pure delight. Although I was accustomed to Ethiopian dishes, she wasn't, and our host took the time to guide through the menu. I didn't find the decor to be as drab as the outside suggested, and the service didn't take particularly long for such a small establishment. The portions were generous, our host attentive, and the food as very tasty and inexpensive.
We will definitely return.
My new favourite restaurant. I've been to Habesha three times now, and each visit was a delight. Ignore the non-descript storefront and interior decorating, this place is fantastic (and I'd like to add that the kitchen was very clean)! The food is delectable, very tasty and satisfying. The service is extremely friendly. And you can't beat the price. My husband and I shared an $11 Habesha platter and both left stuffed!
This restaurant is delicious! Very authentic. The best I have eaten. We had the platter- the portion sizes are massive. Servers and staff very friendly!
Quality Ethiopian.. Habesha is a very plain-looking store that serves tasty Ethiopian food. I had the Habesha platter, which is a $13 platter that comes with curried potatoes, carrots, several kinds of beans, some chicken, a hard boiled egg, and some other sorts of vegetables--portion size was quite large, almost enough for two people. Everything tasted great, and the bread (which, if you haven't eaten Ethiopian food before, you use to mop/wrap up everything else... no utensils here) was light, chewy, and airy, just the way it's supposed to be.
Like most Ethiopian food, the highlight is the really nice seasoning and great, subtle flavours... and the lowlight is the consistency of the texture (which people who don't like Ethiopian food would say is kind of "paste" like... but I like it)
Takes debit and credit cards.
My wife wanted to try something different. Never had African food, so read the reviews and decided to try Habesha. Be sure to jot down the address, as the restaurant is in a building and you may miss the door as you walk by. Upon arrival, we were immediately greeted by the owner. We told her we had a reservation, but obviously didn't need one. Even on a Friday night, the place was near empty. A few of the regulars were taking up 2 tables, enjoying a beer and sharing a platter. Don't think the place has air conditioning, but this adds to the experience! We decided to have a half-liter of the house wine (L'Eparie) as we perused the menu. We decided to share the Habesha platter and the vegetable platter. The order arrived on one large platter for sharing and we each were given a plate of Injera for scooping up our food. This was an adaptation, as we are so used to using utensils! At first, we thought that we had ordered too little food, but as we sampled the variety of items on the platter, all with Injera, we soon became stuffed. The food was simple, yet tasty and different. There was chicken & beef, though very little if it. The platter mostly consisted of different coloured lentils. The vegetables were few & far between. I think the vegetable platter should be renamed the vegetarian platter. The server/owner was very attentive, but nit overbearing. He promptly topped up our water whenever our glasses were near empty. All in all, the experience was good and certainly worth a try. Just don't expect a fancy night out of wining & dining at a 5 star restaurant!
Definitely worthwhile. I've been here a few times with friends, and it's always been worth the visit. If you look in the window and it seems full, don't be put off -- there's more room at the back, but it's not visible from the street.
The vegetarian and non-vegetarian combo platters provide a nice range of different dishes, and I've enjoyed all of them. The decor is nothing fancy, but the service is good, and the prices are really reasonable.
AMAZING. This is one of my favourite restaurants in Ottawa. I would never go anywhere else for an Ethiopian meal. The "Habesha Platter" is the best item on the menu. The portions are generous and the cost is relatively cheap for what you get. The service is great and I often get take out- call ahead 20 minutes before you get there and your meal will be ready. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE!!!
Delicious Ethiopian fare.. I've been to a few Ethiopian restaurants, and this one definitely has the best-tasting food. The vegetarian platter is flavourful and fresh. The meat platter has a lot of bold tastes and flavours. The sauces complement the meat very well. The cost is low and the food is delicious.
The service is not the traditional kind found at chain restaurants (ie. "Hi! My name is so-and-so and I'll be your server this evening!"). However, the staff is very friendly and accomodating - they forgot to charge us for our drinks one meal, and instead of going back they just said it was on the house.
It hasn't been busy in the restaurant during the times I've been there, so I hope it stays in business because the quality of the food is so good!
Really Good.. I love this place. The food has always been so good! And they are very freindly. Its a favorite spot of mine for sure.
Yay!. I thought everything was perfect, but you certainly have no reason to trust me. I guess you will have to try for yourself.
Habesha’s less than exciting storefront luckily translates to some of the best Ethiopian food I have had. A preface: It’s best to approach Ethiopian cuisine with an open mind. It’s not steak and potatoes, and you’re eating with your hands, but if you are open to new experiences, you won’t be disappointed with Habesha.
