Tomo stole my Asian-cuisine loving heart in an instant. The newly renovated Wontonmama home is more spacious, tastey-and twice the fun. Non-sushi lovers will be happy to hear that there is an abundance of non raw-seafood/seaweed incorporated dishes on the menu. Having said that, their sushi (fresh, savoury, beautifully put together rolls) are not to be missed.
From personal experience, the Black Dragon roll (creamy avocado, crisp cucumber, flakey tempura shrimp) is a perfect shareable to warm you up and prepare you for what’s next—-more appiez!!! Yes, don’t move on just yet..grab a refreshing drink and make some belly room for more–because there’s so much more to be excited about at Tomo. I’d love to highlight the Tomo Slaw (first timers would probably refer to this as a papaya slaw out of habit–but Tomo earns the right to personally brand this dish by jazzing it up with a few unexpected flares). Pick your protein (avocado for veggies, tender steak, succulent tuna, melt in your mouth duck breast? Uh, Yeah.) and enjoy it on a well dressed bowl of…you guessed it-julienned papaya, mango, red cabbage, carrots & roasted peanuts….I’m actually drooling just thinking about it…and personally, chose the tuna.
Let’s move on, shall we? After appiez, comes mains..and I’ve already feasted enough on seafood at this point, so it was clearly time to try some red meat options…..guess you can tell I’m not a vegetarian at this point?
The Tomo Teriyaki striploin–advertised as “cooked to medium rare” (kudos to the chef) is melt in your mouth, pull apart, beefy heaven….and the sweet addition of their homemade teriyaki sauce is truly the cherry on top of a delicious meal at one of Ottawa’s “to be seen” dinner date streets. Make your reservation well in advance if you plan on staying past 11 (and spending more $ on booze)–bottle service expected.

My friends and I decided to try Tomo out for the first time. Amazing food and we had an awesome server who was personable and friendly. One of the best services I've ever had at a restaurant/bar. The food was so good, we decided to order more from the menu!

Tomo never disappoints! Always great food, great service and cool vibe! For a date night or a night out with friends, you're sure to have a good time with fresh and delicious sushi! I keep going back for more and I definitely recommend to anyone to go out and try it! 🍣👌🏻👍🏻
Love this place, always good vibes! Food is amazing, everything on the menu is delicious! Tomo Slaw is my favourite with sushi and some fresh sushimi!
Best sushi I have had in Ottawa! Calamari was also delicious and fried to perfection. Great atmosphere and staff. Turns into a cool hangout after dinner too with good music. Will be back for sure!
Great food, amazing price point and excellent atmosphere!!
Excellent food and service. It was our second time there. Looks like it will be our go-to restaurant every time we visit Ottawa.
WOW!!! I loved my experience. Bouffe incroyable, ambiance génial, le resto est magnifique !!
Got the chicken pad Thai and salmon poké bowl. Both were delicious but portions weren't the biggest.. Service was super courteous and fast. Loved the decoration as well. Would definitely recommend!
Fantastic food and attentive service on an outing for a friend's birthday. We ALL loved the food. Recommend you try as it's a relaxing classy place.
The best sushi restaurant I have ever attended. The decor is phenomenal, candle lit walls which compliments the beautiful artistry of "Tomo" written in Japanese calligraphy. In terms of food, the restaurant offers a wide variety of selections ranging from sushi rolls to tapa dishes, all of which can be shared with your friends and family.
Not your Average Japanese Restaurant! From the decor, big bar, sushi ,atmosphere and vibe , make sure to try the tomo slaw, poke bowls and specialty sushi rolls,
The sashimi here was wonderful, and the staff was friendly. I was impressed by the decor which had a wall of sake barrels and gorgeous murals.
We ordered the Cesar's and the Pomegranate mojito. The Cesar was absolutely awesome but the mojito left a bit to be desired there was way too much mint and ice plus I didn't even taste Pomegranate. The restaurant is gorgeous, but if you go there late just note that it turn into a club after 11pm and you have until then to finish your food. The salmon teriyaki was delicious, the fried chicken was good but must be eaten with the sauce or it doesn't have much flavor otherwise and the takoyaki (octopus balls) ARE TO DIE FOR.
Great place for sushi !!! Staff super friendly and everything is fresh and tasty ....wait time for food could improve just a bit... But of course if it doesn't compromise on the quality... Highly recommend this place if every in the area.
The sushi is great and they have interesting rolls. I've tried the gyoza which were good too. The best part is the ambiance, the late night DJ music and the drinks. Hard to find a place that has decent food and amazing night scene too. A favorite hangout!
Yummy sushi (a bit pricy), good service - one negative is that the food can come out somewhat slow, regardless of if the restaurant is busy or not. The sangria and tomo slaw are fantastic, and you really can't go wrong with any of their rolls.

Came to Ottawa for business and just came across Tomo wandering Byward Mkt late at night. Love their hours and they had good music. The food was good, tasty and most important, fresh. The waitress (Jen?) was very friendly and incredibly helpful
Great unique sushi! This place has cool vibes and awesome food. It's rather expensive but worth it, the staff looked very bored and I could hear them discussing personal matters while I ate my food. Other than that it was a good experience!!
I swear I eat other things that aren't sushi. It's mainly to avoid obtaining mercury poisoning. Maybe I shouldn't say mercury poisoning on a restaurant review. I did not get mercury poisoning (despite my conspicuous consumption of fish). Tonight I had #Tuna #Salmon & #Tako #Sashimi. The fish was fresh and buttery. I like a hot wasabi. Like full on instantaneous sinus cleanser. Theirs was quite mild for my palate so I simply concocted a 50/50 soy-sabi ratio. The #FriedChicken was lightly battered and crispy so that was awesome. It was paired perfectly with a spicy soy dipping sauce. I've had larger #Oysters elsewhere but for a buck and a half each, I'm a happy girl. The #Tomo-GranateMojito was refreshing, not too far off in flavour from a traditional mojito and most importantly, not too sweet. The ambiance was spectacular and the service was great too. #romiNOMS
Oh ! Wow this place is amazing and serves the best sushi ever. The Tomo , the kiss and the spicy tuna rolls are amazing. Service is great and ambiance is totally worth it,
I need to start off by saying how incredibly beautiful the interior of this restaurant is. I ordered their signature Tomo role, and was thoroughly impressed; some of the best sushi I have had in Ottawa. The white wine sangria was delicious, and it was refreshing that it wasn't the same old citrus flavours that most other places offer. The aesthetic is very "night out" feeling (they have a DJ later in the evening) and therefore I would recommend checking this place out with a group of friends.
My wife and I were probably the oldest people there but we had a fantastic time. Loud music, lots of hubbub, excellent food, friendly service! The weekend customers lean towards the young and beautiful clubbing end of the human spectrum.
If we were chatting over a cup of tea this morning, I’d feel like there was so much to talk about! Sorry for posting a day late, but we encountered some site difficulties yesterday which are now fixed. I am in the middle of packing for our honeymoon and packing is in my top three most hated things of all time – it just causes me so much stress, and I don’t know why. You would think, with the amount I travel, that I’d have it down pat by now, but nooo… every single trip (even home to Halifax) evokes the same anxiety about forgetting something! I’ve been looking at all sorts of packing strategies (I really love this 5-4-3-2-1 method, but I don’t think it will work for our honeymoon) and basically my MO is just to bring everything but the kitchen sink, and then I end up wearing half of it. I need to take a page out of my BFF’s book – she is honeymooning in Asia right now and brought nothing other than a regular backpack. Crazy!
The former Wontonmama has certainly stepped up its game. The newly branded Tomo is a revamped version of Wontonmama, with a much more "club/lounge" vibe and a beautiful interior. The menu remains quite similar, with more emphasis on Japanese inspired dishes. Toma is great for late night cocktails and tapas, however past 11:00 pm the music is blasting and the venue becomes much more club than it is restaurant.
This is a pretty hip place with a nice patio. The
Menu is not long but the quality of the sushi rolls that we had was excellent. They mainly use salmon, tuna, shrimp and unagi for their sushi. Cocktails are ok. Service was good.
This restaurant used to be Wontonmama. The new decor is incredible and beautiful (thank GOODNESS they finally have proper bathrooms with a working toilet). Service is always friendly. DJs play sick beats you can definitely groove to. However they are now overcharging for their food. I have always found their food to be consistently good at decent prices, but it's not worth the prices they are charging now, especially with the portions they are serving. It probably won't matter though, considering their location in the market, they can probably get away with it.
BEST sushi in Ottawa so far! We’ve tried so many places and most of them are so hit and miss with a lot of rolls tasting similar but not at Tomo! Even though some showed similar ingredients, they tasted so different and bloody delicious! Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t authentic Japanese sushi, but more a fusion blend of amazing flavours! Between three of us, we had 9 rolls, couldn’t get enough! Great drinks too and good service! Great vibe!!!! Love this place and will definitely go back and be ordering in from!
Forgot to mention that the pork belly bao was terrible - wouldn’t recommend, stick to the sushi!
Very delicious meals. The waiting time was quick, in less than 15 minutes all dishes were served. I loved the grilled squid, tomo chicken and the fried rice.
Our main sushi place we go to while in Ottawa.
Service is always good and sushi even better.
You get more fish than rice in your rolls for a better price. And it tastes better.
We also always got seats without reservations but don’t hold me to that fir yourself.
Recommend.
Pretty impressed for a spot on Clarence. The food and quality was great and prices were good. Service was fast and seating is plentiful out in the patio. Great place to go especially during the summer time. Would highly recommend for their sushi.
Loved this place . Since the moment we walked in we felt very welcomed by the staff . Everyone was so accommodating and kind . Service was quick , food was fresh and very tasty . Loved my experience and definitely a place to visit if you’re in Ottawa .
One of the best sushi places we’ve ever been to. True culinary work of art - worth every penny. Excellent service. Fun, lively atmosphere. So grateful they were able to find us a table on a busy Saturday night! What an experience. Thank you!
BEST SUSHI I’ve had here in Ottawa! I’m not a fan of sushi but started to love it because of this place! Recommend it 10/10 I love their Tomo Fried Chicken and Spicy Shrimp Tempura Rolls plus their Mai Tai Punch cocktail!
