I really enjoyed this place, and will definitely be coming again! They’ve got so many options, especially seafood ones! I had a spring roll, the biggest you’ll ever find probably, and the Buddha’s Delight (soup). They were both pretty good.

By far one of my top 5 favorite restaurants in Ottawa. The atmosphere is a throwback to years gone by and that's probably why I like it so much. The dim-sum offerings have locals and tourists lined up for hours on the weekends, so come early. Dim sum is also offered throughout the day from a menu (instead of carts) as well a full Chinese inspired menu. Service is always friendly and efficient. It's almost impossible to put into words what makes this place great, but for me it is. I've never had a bad meal there,
Saturday dim sum - the place wasn't too crowded arriving at 11am for dim sum. The dim sum was decent. Ordered 6dishes for approx $35 not including tip
This is one of my regular spots for Chinese food and it has a special place in my heart since it's linked with so many birthdays and get togethers. I still come here religiously every year on my birthday with all of my friends and on Boxing Day in memory of great time my friends and I ate here back when we were kids. I come regularly at lunch for dim sum and I appreciate the quick service and decent grub. The decor here is pretty impressive compared to some of the other spots in the neighbourhood and there's often a big crowd. Great spot for a get together with friends or a quick lunch. You'll probably see me there ;-)
Only ever had delivery and only ever ordered dim sum, but they deserved a review for a few reasons. First of all, their dim sum is GIGANTIC!! Ok, I have small fists, but their pork shao mai was literally the size of my fist!!! I had to take four bites to eat one dumpling! Two pieces are probably the same size as one small pork chop. Same thing goes for their shrimp shao mai and their spring rolls! Their shrimp har gow was nothing special, and their stuffed eggplant was just ok. The hot sauce that comes with their dim sum is very good, but it was strange that you don't get soy sauce with dim sum on delivery. We called and asked if they forgot it and they said no. Next time, we knew better and asked for soy sauce with the order, and they forgot it. :-/ They also gave us pork spring rolls by accident instead of the vegetarian ones we ordered. The dumplings are about $5 for an order (of 4 pieces), but it's understandable given their size.
Ordered for the shrimp and pork Shui My.......Very tasty
Pork eggroll was tasty and I was supplied with hot sauce and plum sauce.
I also had fried rice which was very good but I did not realize the portion size was massive.
I went to Yangtze recently for dim sum. Although, for the record, I went later in the day, so the experience could be completely different during brunch.
The menu consisted of the usual dim sum staples (However, I saw some dishes not listed at another table - perhaps they're on the Chinese menu? Or people just ask? I always find this nice for people missing some of their favourite dishes).
I decided to order 4 dishes (which ended up being too much food for me, so if going alone I'd recommend 3) and they were all quite tasty.
The sticky rice was huge in comparison to other places I've been. It was still loaded with meat and tasted delicious. The Ha Gow was steamed the right amount. The chicken feet were nicely seasoned. And the eggplant was also rather good, with the shrimp filling (which I'm not sure was mentioned on the menu, so just a heads up for those with allergies).
Overall I think my meal really hit the spot and I hope to go again in the future.
Food: 8/10
Loner Rating: 7/10 (The tables are reasonably spaced out.)
Atmosphere: 7.5/10
Location: 8/10 (It is located right on Somerset in Chinatown. So it is pretty central. And it's a nice walk from Bank St.)
The restaurant is close to the Chinese arch. The building looks nice from the outside. There were a lot of tables. The service was fast, and the food was really good. The price was reasonable and with a table for 4, it was roughly $90 + $20 tip.
I've been coming here for about 7-8 years now. It is definitely the best dim-sum in Ottawa, although thats not saying too much since our dim-sum is kind of lacking. The service is always quick and good.
Still good after decades in Ottawa. Classic Chinese dining. Enjoy their pepper steak, Peking duck although a bit more meat than skin would be great, noodles super and Chinese greens a delight.
This restaurant Is amazing . The service that we received was impeccable and the food is not anything regular , it is of quality and flavor . The food is fresh , hot , tasty . One thing I love about this place is its not Americanized , it is authentic Chinese food . You won't go wrong if you go here!! The dim sum is amazing and so is the regular menu items. Will be going back for sure.
Great good, and so much selection. I would definitely recommend this place for vegetarians because they have a lot of veggie selection. Also they probably have the friendliest staff in china town.
Easily one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. Excellent service and a good sized menu with the specialty being Dim Sum. People come from all over each weekend to enjoy the traditional Chinese dishes and I've been going here for six years and it never disappoints.
Avoid the lunch hours on the weekend or come early unless you want to stand in line. However, the food is worth the wait.
A classic place for my family and I! We've been coming for years and the food is delicious! Not healthy, because it's oily but delicious nonetheless. Writing this review makes me want to go back!
Been here a number of times for Dim Sum, and it has always been very busy. In fact, years ago this was my first Dim Sum experience ever. There were only 2 things I tried that I did not enjoy. It was an eggplant dish, and chicken feet. However, I learned something when I went with a Jewish friend. And it is that 90% of their dishes contain pork and/or shellfish. I remember we asked the server about things, and she replied "Everything has pork." We thought maybe she didn't understand, when we asked about their rice, so we got it anyway. Sure enough, the middle was stuffed with chicken, pork and shrimp. That being said, other than the dishes mentioned, I found everything quite good, and I was willing to try anything put in front of me.I did find however that the Chu Shing across the street seemed to have more selection overall, but this place is pretty decent too. I'd definitely go back.
Lovely atmosphere & dim sum. Yangtze is probably the most aesthetically pleasing Chinese restaurant I've come across in Ottawa. The atmosphere is elegant and lovely. I have attended wedding receptions here a couple of times (size and quality of food make it a pretty good choice). They serve a lovely dim sum and staff are quite friendly. I don't come here as often as I should though, because main dinner prices are a bit steeper compared to more low-key options in the city.
Great food, great atmosphere. The food is very on point, this ain't some western-ized Chinese food. The space is well decorated, though a bit cramped. A bit pricey. Sea King's dim sum is as good as this though.
Don't expect good service, but expect delicious food. I have been going here since I was a kid, I have never been disappointed by the food. Do not expect the servers to be friendly; they always looked bothered by something. But I will continue to eat here since the food tastes great. It's a good space, but they could definitely spruce up the interior decor and make it more exciting, not much has changed in the past 10+ years.
The way to go. We had an order of "ha gau", "ha coeng", and "gon caau ngau ho".
Jay liked that their food was nothing fancy, presented and tasted just like most of the neighborhood "jau lau" in Cantonese region in China would do - authentic.
Staffs were middle-aged "dai suk" and "ah yee" - another sign of being authentic...
So,
Don't expect to be impressed by the food - the mediocrity rules.
Don't expect to be waited by well-mannered servers - the Cantonese attitude doesn't entail that.
Bring a Cantonese friend with ya. You will have a good time.
Great for Dim Sum. We've been going for years - it has gotten more expensive but what hasn't?
We only have had dim sum there.
Consitently Good Food at low prices. I've been going to Yangtze since I was 12 years old and it has consistently improved and redefined itself. When you go to Yangtze for such a long time you know what you want and you get it every time. Their food is very consistent and you know that it's going to be the same every time you order it. The staff was much crustier in the past, so when I read the service reviews I believe that it's true. But as of late, the servers have developed a sense of humour, and they smile quite a bit and have become quite personable. It is actually a cultural thing not to smile a lot, but anyway, I think that they have improved significantly lately.
Their sea food is great. The Vancouver Crab with salt pepper is divine. The lobster with ginger and onion and the oysters are also quite great. They also do a lot of the noodle dishes very well, like cantonese chow mein. The noodles are very light and crisp, but saucy at the same time. The pecking duck is great too. But make sure to order the duck that you wrap in lettuce or crepes, the stir fried one is really not that great. It is also known for their dimsum dishes and they are really good.
Yang tze is very well know in Ottawa and if someone is looking for a family restaurant with consistently good food it's the place to go.
Decent-Good Food, Big Servings. Went out on a whim with four other friends after work on a Monday night. We drove up Bank around 9 p.m. and stopped at two places, both officially closing at 10 p.m. but reluctant to seat us. We found Yangtze, went in around 9:30 and stayed till 10:55. There was one other table of people eating, yet the restaurant staff served us professionally and patiently the whole night.
When I first looked at the menu I thought it was a bit expensive, but when the food came I realized why. The portions were massive and in my opinion delicious. There were five of us (four men, one lady, all 20-somethings). We had the complete four-person meal and three orders of dim sum. We were all completely stuffed and still had at least one quarter of the food left.
I will definitely be going here again. The food is good and the atmosphere is clean and proper but you still feel comfortable laughing and having a great time. It seems like a good place to bring a group of 5-10 people.
Thank you Yangtze!
Lunch in chinatown. My girlfriend and i were told about this restaurant by my cousin and just had to try it. Great food, nice atmosphere and great price :) can't wait to go back next time in the ottawa area
Good atmosphere, good food. Poor service. A smile now and then couldn't hurt.
Exceptionally good Thai basil eggplant. Best eggplant dish I've ever had
Been go here for 20+ years. They have some of the best dim sum in Ottawa especially on weekends and holidays . Be prepared to wait if you come in prime dim sum hours There are almost always lineups but the wait is generally worth it . They one of the few restaurants that serve shrimp Sui Mei most only have pork . They also have a soup on a dumpling (seafood soup inside a large dumpling ) that is to die for you need to come early as they only make a limited quantity and only on weekends I will admit they they are a little pricey (compared to Toronto) and yes the carts can be frustrating as you may wait Compares favorable to any dim sum in Toronto in all but price
Food good. Service unpredictable.. Since I first went to Yangtze in 2005, I have found the food consistently well prepared, but the service less than adequate at times. I would say it is a good place to try for an informal dinner, but not a place to bring a larger group for a formal celebration.
WONDERFUL!. Love this place! The service is bang on. Water is constantly being refilled with you barely noticing they are doing it. The waitresses are friendly. Yangtze fried rice is amazing! Sweet and sour chicken is to die for. The chicken chow mein is breathe taking. Prices are reasonable and I have been there dozens of times and its never a disappointment. Very nice and clean restaurant. Run excellently.
If you like authentic chinese food. This place is HIGHLY recommended! ENJOY!
Cheers,
Dimsum. I am a HUGE fan of dimsum, and I go here only for dimsum.
Could someone suggest me a better place for dimsum if they know any? I have tried the chu shing, I prefer yangtze.
*Just so you know, during dimsum, tea is not free.
We do the take out thing!. We love this place so much that we're willing to drive down with the kiddies from Kanata to get Yangtze Take Out. We especially love the salt-pepper shrimp (be sure to ask for 'no shells'), the kulu pork, house fried rice, crab & seafoam soup, black pepper steak, and deep fried sea bass in black bean sauce (this is better is you eat it at the restaurant, otherwise it gets a bit soggy). This is a family-owned business and they treat their regulars with incredible appreciation and respect. Love Yangtze's!
Having done dim sum often in Vancouver and San Francisco we found Yangtze middling. Food was decent and the service was slightly below average. I think the poor service was due in part to where we were seated. Be careful not to get at a table in the centre of the restaurant. Although there are aisleways throught the centre they are tight and therefore the servers were reluctant to bring the carts through, preferring to empty them by looping around the outer wider aisleways. We're still searching for our Ottawa dim sum hangout and right now Yangtze tops the list of a pretty lackluster selection.
Always up for a ride down the Yangtze. This is our go to place for dim sum. I have to admit, however, it took one or two outings for me to warm up to this place. The size of the dim sum/dumplings are large. So big, in fact, that it is difficult to fit into one's mouth without first cutting them in half. The variety is there and you can always order from the menu to supplement your meal. The staff are also quite helpful and wiling to get you something not on the carts. From the carts, try the sticky rice and tripe. The garlic chinese greens and hot and sour soup are favs of my wife.
Great Chinese food. Try the sizzling beef. Also try Mecong.
Haven't had their dimsum but we went for their dinner menu. The service was good as we had someone in the group who spoke Vietnamese. The food was good too. Some dishes were better at other restaurants but if you go in a big group you can try many dishes. My personal favorite was the crispy beef!
As famous as this restaurant is, their dim sum plates are only above average. The flavours are authentic, sure, and the service is decent (at a Chinese restaurant too, what a surprise). However, nothing was exceptional, creative, or even extremely high quality and fresh. I recommend this if you're staying in Ottawa for a while, and you want a gentle introduction to Chinese food.
I had our tummy filled.
Had my pre-birthday celebration dinner tonight.
Food was tasty.
We had:
Spring Roll - Vegetable
Shrimp Shui Mai
Spare Rib (dim sum)
Assorted Chinese vegetables
Szechuan Chicken
Fried Beef Ginger and Onion
Sweet and Sour Pork
Deep Fried Bass with Black been sauce
Chicken Fried Rice
and Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri for my drinks 😅

Good and tasty food, service good too. I would recommend to the owner to consider a visual menu for those (like me) who don't know what they are ordering, I was using google to find pictures of things I ordered.
This is the -best- dim sum in Ottawa!
Also one three best Chinese restaurants for evening meals in town. I first started going for weekend brunch dim sums 40 years ago, while an undergrad at Carlton and still do, so I've been to all the dim brunches in town when I'm staying in Ottawa and have a clear conscience saying this is #1!
These two pics are from my first post-lockdown dim sum brunch at the beginning of Dec, 2021.
Uh, YUM!!?!
One of the best Chinese food you can find in Ottawa.
I really loved loved loved the tripe, and the hollowed-veggies on the third picture.
The staffs are super friendly and accommodating.
I loved eating here!
A must visit in Ottawa. Food is fantastic! There's a reason it's been open for over 35 years. Make your dim sum dreams come true and stop by! Make a reservation for dim sum otherwise you *will* be waiting.
Love Yangtze restaurant. Delicious food, friendly and welcoming service. If you're looking for an incredible meal out, don't miss Yangtze! Also, definitely try the peking duck!
