Review Sur Lie French Restaurant Ottawa - Ottawa

I was very very impressed with somewhere dine bar. Went on Valentine’s Day, and was greeted by multiple sweet servers. The restaurant’s interior is pleasing and aesthetic. We ordered Grilled Moroccan Octopus as appetizers, and Trofie Pasta and Grilled Salmon as our main dishes. I was surprised by the portion of all, especially the octopus. All dishes were of high quality food, with visual proofs. I would say this restaurant serves better than other top restaurants, and I would recommend others to visit.

Had dinner here-didn’t love it. We had: -Oysters: These were buck a shuck so don’t expect amazing flavor. I found the taste alright although some oysters were more bitter than others -Octopus: The octopus itself was cooked perfectly and seasoned simply so we could enjoy the natural taste of the meat. However the sides didn’t suit it; the addition of grilled pears created a confusing flavor combination. There were also bell peppers in there that made the dish even more sweet.. -Truffle Risotto: My least favorite dish. The rice was dry and the sauce was excessively cheesy. Bad texture and taste. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated, but the lighting is awful. It gives off nightclub vibes. The food they serve is on the fancier side so the poor lighting really ruins the presentation and therefore part of the dining experience.

My girlfriend and I were in Ottawa for her birthday, and I managed to get a reservation at the somewhere dinner. The service was excellent and the food was good, like really good. The Japanese dumplings we had were some of the best we've eaten so far, meanwhile my main pasta dish was also really tasty. Since it was my girlfriend's birthday, they brought out 2 slices of cake for the both of us on the house! I would definetly recommend this spot for a small birthday celebration to anyone that wants a cozy place around the byward market area!

There is a waiter at somewhere who is absolutely amazing, I forgot his name… I think it’s Aurel? So talented so amazing so personable, if you have the chance to come to somewhere make sure you come see Aurel! Very handsome too!!!! Sadly taken though….. The rest of the staff is amazing too, so friendly so amazing so talented! The atmosphere is great, the food is great, the drink is great. If you’re looking for a great night out come here :)

The ambiance on the patio was nice but similar to previous review music too loud at 7:30 and could hardly hear friends at same table. Food fair to good but not overwhelming. The service was great but the food took almost 2 hours on a slow Monday night and not complicated order. We were informed the kitchen was backed up? The order arrived at 10 and we were seated at 7:30, with order by 8:15. Offered shots due to long wait which was nice gesture but were sweet and not great tasting. Would have been better to offer either a few appetizers such as flatbread to start or dessert. Great to continue to bring water but temperature lukewarm on hot night, either serve cold water or add ice. Cocktails nice but definitely not worth $18.00. Would not come back unfortunately!

Lively atmosphere and chill staff. Lay out of area is comfortable and they have plenty of seating for small and larger groups. Nice spot for a weekend out.

The restaurant was nicely furnished and service was great. Let me start and say I was a chef for 8 years and my expectations for these types of restaurants are high, so of course my issue was the food. It was not good at all! I got the gnocchi entrée which is way over priced for what you get. The mushrooms were raw, I had a huge bay leaf in the sauce, the sauce was bland, I had large chunks of leafy greens that should have been cut smaller, parmesan isn't strong enough making it unneccessary. Good note whoever cooked the pasta did amazing they were perfectly fluffy.

We were the only two people in the restaurant (wife and i), the big owner actually hit on my wife after she went to the bathroom (tall and FAT), what a scum bag. We're the only two people in his restaurant and has the nerve to stop her and tell her how gorgeous her eyes are while i'm 30 feet away. Avoid at all costs, this is 2019 - and wrong. My wife was so shocked she waited a few days to tell me. She felt dirty and uncomfortable after some more comments. No wonder we were the only two people in here, horrible food, shells in Oysters, avoid - you can do much, much better in this city.

This was our second visit...

Our first one left a very positive impression. The cocktails were interesting, creative and very tasty. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. We shared the gnocchi and venison which were both equally delicious. Although the restaurant had only been opened for a few weeks, service staff were knowledgeable of the content of the menu and provided overall satisfying service. We can say that the standard had been set high.

However, when we returned the second time, both of us left were left disappointed. Service was slow and less attentive. The food was good but nothing to rave about and some of our plates were on the cold side which was hard to understand since the restaurant was not busy.

I will give Sur-Lie the benefit of the doubt, believing it may have a been a bad night and not a common thing. It is unfortunate that it will now take some convincing for me to return.

Best restaurant in town by far!! I was very surprised by the level of cuisine at this restaurant!! The food is to die for and the wine list is excellent with lots of by the glass options so you can try different wines all in one visit. Recommend this place to anyone that loves food and understands what a food experience is! Cannot say enough about this place, have gone back twice and will be going several more times especially in the summer when their patio opens!!!! A must when in Ottawa or living in Ottawa!! If you want to impress a date or business client this is the place!

I was beginning to wonder if perhaps there was a curse placed on our beloved Murray St. here in Ottawa. Foodie hearts broke when news of Domus Café, Murray Street Kitchen and most recently, Rene Rodriguez’ Navarra had closed its doors. But as the old saying goes–when one closes, another door opens and that new shiny Murray St door will lead you right into the sexy and modern new space that Sur-Lie now calls home. After extensive renovations in a very short time span, Sur-Lie is already making positive headlines and giving us hope that curses can always be broken. Everything from the European light fixtures, long eye-catching bar and subtle deep house music makes this a place you want to be seen. If it’s an after work cocktail drawing you in or if it’s to sit down for an evening of modern French fare, it definitely won’t be the one and only time you visit. I devoured my way through a hefty selection of the menu and already have dishes that I pray won’t disappear with seasonal menu changes. Unique ingredients and flavor undertones are what set Chef Nick Berolo’s menu apart from other French cuisine restaurants in the city.
