Review Baan Thai - Ottawa

Gella Rose
I've been going to Baan Thai for years. Just realized today I still haven't done a review. Everything is always delicious, freshly made. My favourite today is their Mango salad...so yummy!!

First time going last night and absolutely loved it. The food was absolutely to die for. They have a truly authentic pad Thai, not “ketchupy” like a lot of other restaurants. The coconut curry is insane. Staff are wonderful and friendly, and the decor is cozy and authentic. I never would have thought Centrepointe would have somewhere like this. I’m hooked, and I will be back again and again.

Unfortunately my partner and I came here this weekend and were not pleased. I ordered a curry and he had a rice and vegetable dish but the flavours were not there. Also took us a long time to be attended to. I normally love Thai food but sadly will not be back.

I’ve always done take out! Food is delicious always fresh and made to order! This is one of my favourite take outs! Just awesome a must try!
Mitchell House
Great Thai food that has all the favourites. Really like their Pad Thai, as well as the Pad Gra Pow which had just the right amount of heat to it. All done at a very affordable price.

Unfortunately, we ordered take-out from Baan Thai this evening and had to wait 1 hour and 10 minutes for our order to be ready. We went back into the restaurant several times and were given no update as to when the food would be ready. The staff seemed more concerned about their in-house customers and offered no apology or discount when the food was finally ready. This was a very disappointing experience and the result of poor planning on the part of the staff. They were clearly not equipped to handle both their in-house and take-out orders. We will not be ordering from Baan Thai again.

This was my first time visiting. My friend and I were going to a show at Centrepoint and stopped by for dinner. I was amazed at the flavours. The service was excellent. Make reservations or do take out, but try it.

Ordered #21 and it was sweeter than an ice cream. Since when did the green curry become sweet item ? Avoid this place.

Decided to try this place out after finding out Thai Flame in Bell's Corners was closed Dec 1-24th.
Reservations for 3 for 5:30pm supper this past Saturday.
We ordered deep fried spring rolls(#4) and charbroiled marinated squid(#7) for appetizers. The spring rolls were very good and hot (temp). I've had squid dozens of times and this squid was chewy. It could have done with a little more time on the grill.
For mains we ordered the Chicken/potato yellow curry(#20), the BBQ duck red curry(#22), and the beef green curry(#21) each served with rice.
All the mains were very tasty. The Chicken/Potato yellow curry was the favorite of the three.
Service was really slow and the food temp was not hot. There were many, many take-out patrons that really slowed things down for those of us sitting at tables. Take-outs seemed to diminish after 6:45.
I would definitely recommend Baan Thai, if you have lots of time to enjoy. Cost for three with 2 glasses of wine was $113 plus tip.

Their taste of foods is quitely authentic! Every southeast-asian will say so! I guarantee.
This restaurant has small space yet always crowded, you need to book first for the holiday or weekend if you wanna get a lunch or dinner.
The prices are quitely fair and not-too-pricey.
Their service is also fast and not time consuming.
Keep the good work!

Nice to have at least 4 people for dinner for a better selection of plates. Content of many plates are similar but sauces are different. Reasonably priced for a small restaurant.

This is our favourite local Thai restaurant! Great food! The fresh wraps are tasty, with fresh herbs, the soups are delicious, and the ginger beef and pad Thai made with quality ingredients. The restaurant is cosy, so reservations are a good idea, and take out is always a great idea!

My friend and I went here because the ratings were super high on a couple sites, but unfortunately we were very disappointed. The food were all quite sweet and portion size wasn't that amazing. We had Tom yum soup which was not bad, but our mango salad was sweet, so was green curry and as well as pad thai. The middle late aged waitress was very inpatient, and gave us attitude when asking for water refill for the first time. The guy server was very nice though. One thing that really stood out was their house made chili garlic hot sauce, quite flavourful with a kick (although still on the sweet side). The store was packed, lots of people came in one after another and it seemed like it'd be hard to get a seat without reservation. I probably wouldn't come back :(.

Visited last Wednesday with my family and it was a good thing we had a reservation - place was packed ! :) Food was prepared with quality meat and vegetables, and portions are generous. We enjoyed the various dishes and are looking forward to going back !

Baan Thai is a great restaurant and many people know it. Book a reservation on any popular dining holiday if you want a table as the restaurant is small. The food is delicious. The Pad Thai is what I've had and it is a fair portion with lots of flavour. My only suggestion is if you're a person that dislikes cilantro be sure to ask if it's in your dish as they don't write it on the menu when they use it. Prices are fair and their take out service is quick too.

Great spot for lunch. It gets pretty busy so give yourself extra time. Service is friendly and the food is tasty! I tried the chicken green curry with is served with veggies and bamboo shoots. Portion is ample and you can order sticky or plain rice on the side. I also tried some chicken panang which us usually my go-to for thai curries but I preferred the green curry here.

Situated in a little strip mall is a decent little Thai joint! I frequent Baan Thai for their lunch specials which includes a Tom yum soup and a variety of noodles, rice dishes and curries. The pad seew is a must try!

Best Thai In Town. My whole family loves it. Our favourite food and we swear by it. Amazing!

Kristine8707. Had an excellent dinner this evening at Baan Thai. Services was on point and food was delicious.

Service Going Downhill fast. I have been going to Baan Thai for the past 10 years. My co-workers and I look for every reason to go and I order take out for the fam for those non-cook nights.
Went there on Saturday, I understand it was valentines day but pretty sure that is every year and you already know you will be busy. I tolerated the long waits for take out cause the food is that good but they've been getting more ridiculous..they say it will be ready in 45min and you go and still have to wait another 30min. On Saturday, I (politely) said to the ladies at the counter that the wait times are getting worse and should mention it to the owner, I was surprised that they rudely walked away and ignored me, one of the ladies let me know that they have no time for people who complain because those who wanted to come back did. I felt it was a valid complaint and I wasn't rude about it but wow! the customer no longer matters if they are not happy with their service and apparently can be treated like crap for suggesting that I shouldn't have to wait well over an hour for takeout - valentines or not...will miss the food but clearly they aren't looking for loyal customers!
Winterlift
Reservation. Reserved for 12:10. Got there at 12:12 - was told they would not honor our lunch reservation. Staff ignored us as non-confrontational nature is to assume we would drift away....

Horrible customer service---------Don't reserve as it means nothing

Absolutely wonderful. I've had several of their delicious cuisine. I would definitely recommend the yellow curry, Tom yum soup, and my personal favourite, vegetarian spring rolls.

Everything was delightful; from the flavours to the pleasant services, also food wise, just the perfect amount of balance on the taste palette, without the over use of coconut milk (and I love coconuts).

This restaurant is a definite yes for me, and I would recommend for everyone else to try. :)
Pip
Phoned my order in, ready in 35 minutes. Turned up to find them phoning me, we have no chicken. On a Monday at 6.15? Ok I'll take beef but I expect a discount. No can do, whilst a self important waiter floats about. The owner I think. Free rice after much hassle but no apology from the self important guy. This place WAS great but not anymore.
Courtney
Service wasn't great, food wasn't the best either. Not a great experience. Def not the best Thai in Ottawa.
Elle
Amazing. Phenomenal. I have nothin else to add.
PickyFoodie
Loved it. Great seafood fried rice loaded with calamari, shrimp, and large mussels. I would totally go back. Highly recommended.
Fiona
Delish. Had the chicken pad thai. Very good but could have used more chicken. Had spring rolls. Also very good. Wasn't disappointed! Would go here again.

In love with this place!. I really wish people wouldn't write reviews based on one crappy experience.. Give this place a chance! You won't regret it :) I've been coming here regularly since September. I have never had a problem with the wait time or service, and I have never needed to make a reservation. Mind you, I've only ever been here on a weekday and never on a Friday. One time, the manager (or owner? Not sure) even gave me and my friend a ride home after our meal because she didn't want us to walk in the snow. Now that is what I call service! It's kind of in the middle of nowhere. But once you walk in you'll see that it's a cozy, and charming little restaurant with (mostly) friendly staff who remember you, and remember your "usual" lol. On top of that, it's the best Thai food I have had here in Ottawa. I've tried Tom Yum Gai, Tom Kha Gai, Veggie Spring Rolls, and Pad Thai at both Thai Flame and Pookie's Thai and it does not even come close to the deliciousness that is Baan Thai!!

Horrible service. We ordered for pick-up on a Friday night and they told us 45 minutes. We got there in 45 minutes and I doubt they even started cooking our food. We walked in to this tiny entrance where we waited for at least 15 minutes before we saw anyone. We were pretty invisible to the staff at that front door. They finally came and I told them my name for pick-up, and we waited even longer while no one helped us. We also didn't seem to be the only ones having problems as the man ahead of us said he'd been waiting for an hour and half for his take out. After waiting that long ourselves we gave up and left the restaurant to go somewhere that would actually serve us some food.
Fishtaco
Delicious. The portions are very generous if you're getting take out. Panang and Pad thai are unreal here! The wait is long and the order isn't always ready when they say it will be, but it's still the best thai food place in town. will be getting take out with my boyfriend for valentines day from here for sure!

Have sat in and have ordered takeout. Never disappointed. Vegetarian spring rolls and shrimp panang are my favourites, but I've tried other items and it's all good. Service can be slow. Also, reservations are recommended as it is small and crowded. Not a restaurant to linger at after a meal. Just amazing Thai food.
Me
Good food. Poor service!!!

I ordered take out and they messed up my order and it took over 1 hour.
Lynnie_83
Small place with great ambiance. Unfortunately my pad Thai was way too sweet, and the spring rolls were average. The highlight of our dinner was the Tom Kha Gai soup and the great service. Will try this place again, but will order something different.
Alex
Baan Thai tends to be crowded (reservation strongly recommended) but that's no wonder, considering how good the food is! Must-try items are the grilled pork skewer appetizers, the tom kha soup, the chicken or shrimp sauteed with eggplants and black bean sauce, and especially the grilled salmon with spicy sweet & sour sauce. The only item here I have been slightly disappointed by was the green curry with beef, which was a bit overcooked and chewy (though the vegetables in the curry were perfect). The presentation of the dishes is charming too; when we had the BBQ duck curry, it came served in a duck-shaped bowl.

Love it! A hidden gem in our neighbourhood!. We moved from Toronto over 6 years ago and had not found a decent thai restaurant like our favourite in our old neighbourhood. Then we found Baan Thai right around the corner!

We've been ordering from Baan Thai for over a year and next to our other favourite Thai restaurant in Bells Corners (Sukhothai) this is great and much closer to home.

The portions are generous and well-priced. The pad thai is delicious and the peanut sauce for the satays is spicy and lovely. We've also had the spring rolls, cashew chicken and steamed rices, and have never been disappointed. You never have to wait for the order, they are always friendly and on-time. We would recommend this to anyone in the neighbourhood. (We've never eaten in the restaurant, as we have a large family so it's hard to coordinate, but we would love to try sometime!)

Although I find it can be on the more expensive side, I don't believe that I have anything bad! Sometimes they are closed on holidays when other places would be open and if you are going to dine in on a Friday or Saturday night for sure make a reservation! However, living in centrepointe it's awesome to be able to walk to such a great restaurant!!
Andrea
Favorite Thai Place. I have never dined in, but have ordered take out from this place many, many times. Every time I order the Yellow curry with chicken and potatoes, which is AMAZING, and the Chicken Pad Thai. The pad thai is very peanutty, which some may find too sweet if you are used to conventional pad thai. Baan Thai has set my standards very high for Thai food, I can't even enjoy Thai food from other restaurants now.

Noisy but good. We went to Baan on a Saturday night. Fortunately we had made reservations because it was packed. Not somewhere to go for a quiet intimate evening! We had shrimp spring rolls and veg tempura for starters. The rolls were great - very hot and crispy - but the tempura was a bit odd. The batter was nothing like Japanese tempura batter but was closer to that found on English fish and chips. Tasty, just not what we expected. My main dish of shrimps with eggplant was excellent. I would have it again. My partner's duck curry was very rich, mild and lightly spiced. The predominant flavour was coconut milk. It could have done with more seasoning and more chili-heat. The sticky rice was actually sticky :)
It is conveniently located for dinner before going to Centerpointe Theatre so we will probably go there again.

This place is fantastic. The yellow curry chicken is absolutely delicious and my favourite dish! My only complaint about it is that over the past year or two, the portion has become smaller. While some other reviews have stated that the pad Thai is too sweet, I find it to be quite good, and a nice counterpoint to to the spiciness of other dishes. Springrolls or rice wraps make a really good appetizer. The service is always prompt and friendly. A reservation is a good idea because the place can get quite busy; an alternative would be to order takeout, but if it's really busy, they may be a bit late. One thing I did notice is that the prices have gone up over the past couple of years, but for the quality of food, it's still worth it.

It's just okay!. This is definitely not making my top 10 lists of favourite Thai restaurants in Ottawa. The food was okay but I wouldn't go there again. The tofu in my Pad Thai was undercooked and the noodles overcooked. Sure there was a crowd of people but they were all white and long ago I was given a tip: if diners are all caucasian in an "ethinc" restaurant, it can't be that great. Hey, not my quote, but words I've learned to be true. If Ottawa's Thai community wouldn't eat there how is it that good? Tip: if you insist on going, have a reservation.

Service was a little slow due to the fact it was crazy busy... Mango salad was one of the best I've ever had! Unfortunately the pad Thai was off... Way too sweet, shrimp was really badly freezer burnt and the noodles were barely cooked as well. Panang sauce was amazing but chicken was way over cooked. All in all a pretty good experience.
Centrepointe Fabulous Cuts
Great Food!!!. After hearing many of the residents from the Centrepointe area tell us that we had to try Baan Thai we decided to go and did not regret the wait for the food as it was out of this world! Fresh food and great presentation!!!

Jack. Tried Pad Thai and found it to be too sweet.

Decent but not remarkable. Ok, I lied I suppose because I'm remarking, and said it wasn't remarkable. It was nothing special, the place was busier than I like, but I guess that's because the food isn't bad. I've definitely had better Pad Thai, but the curry was nice (not chalky).
And I'm getting old or something because things are getting just a hair more expensive then I think they ought to be.

Best tofu!. I try every Thai restaurant I come across and I must say this is the best tofu I have ever had in a restaurant! Big pieces. Cooked to perfection. Not mushy like so many others. Amazing spring rolls! Pad Thai sauce was a bit too sweet for me but I will definitely be back. My boyfriend loved the shrimp pad thai.

Tongue Thai’d. My new favourite place for Thai in O-town! Do not wok by this place, although maybe hard not too considering it's kinda tucked away in Centrepoint.

Ordered Pad Thai (Thai rice noodles stir-fried with chicken or shrimp, egg, bean sprouts, green onions and peanuts.) $12.00. Best Pad Thai hands down! Including my spots in Toronto. These tangy-sweet noodles disappeared faster than you can squeeze a lime wedge. The balance of sour, sweet, and savory flavors was bang on!

Also ordered the Gaeng Kua Supparod (Shrimp and pineapple cooked in a red curry and coconut milk served in a fresh pineapple shell.) $14.25. This dish is usually my go to cause you can't beat the heat, the sweet, and the creamy coconut milk combo. Plus I love the hollowed out pineapple its served in!

No need to thai me up, I am bound to return here soon!

Charge for hot sauce???. Went on 2 occasions for lunch. First time had 1 chili pepper rice noodle dish. Both spicy and very yummy. This week had a very bland sugary pad Thai. When I asked to have some chili sauce to spice up my sugary pad Thai, the waitress said there was a 75 cent extra charge. Really? Explains why there is no soya sauce or chili on the table. I wonder if they charge for sugar and milk if you order coffee? I recommend incorporating a small charge in the price and having customer satisfaction instead.

Wow - what a gem. Went for lunch on a weekday and was surprised that this place was packed (always a good sign) given its location. but once i had my meal i understood why. this is a fantastic thai restaurant - possibly the best in ottawa. can't wait to go back.

sidenote: beware if you go at lunch. service was a bit slow, given the busy-factor and my lunch was a little bit longer than usual.

Second time around; second home run. Excellent food. Prompt courteous service. Nice intimate atmosphere. Love the potato-chicken curry and the fresh vegetable rolls. Save room for the deep-fried banana with coconut ice cream. Divine.

Yum!. Would not have found it without a recommendation, but so glad I did. Greatly enjoyed a "dinner for four" before seeing John Prine at Centrepointe recently. The service was just plain great -- a waitress with a sweet personality. It wasn't breakneck speedy, but suited us perfectly. Will go again.
Theonlyanneb
Delicious! A group of us had the dinner for 6, and we couldn't decide which dush we liked best. Surprisingly the pad Thai and yellow curry ranked lowest but still good. The service is slow, so make sure you have at least two hours to spare. Their food is best to savour anyway! And do make reservations- it was packed the whole 3 hours we were there.
Mila
Best Thai restaurant in Ottawa. I recently moved to Toronto and I'm still trying to find a thai restaurant as good as this one. My favourites are the mango salad, pad kee mow (spicy noodle dish) and the duck curry but seriously everything here delicious!!!
Abriand89
Good value. The food is tasty and is a good value. The serivce is polite and efficient. My only complaint is that the wine list is a little overpriced.
Bob
Probably the best Thai in all of Ottawa. 'Nuff said.
Palmer.ryan
Amazing. While around Centerpointe, we decided to try out Baan Thai. It was probably the best Thai I've had in the city and the service was great as well. Two thumbs up.
Ottawa Foodie
My favourite Thai food indulgence. I frequently come here for lunch, and have also ordered take out. While the service and take out can be slow, the food is wonderful, the servers are friendly if quiet, and even when busy always have my water glass refilled. I love love love the yellow coconut curry chicken with potatoes, it makes it hard to order anything else! Yummy spring rolls, too.

Lost my business. Horrendous Service!. I echo the sentiments of some of the earlier reviewers (Tammo). The food is quite good here, but good luck actually getting it. I've eaten in at the restaurant on quite a few occasions. The service has deteriorated drastically over the last couple of years -- it is now VERY SLOW, disinterested, and brusque, to put it mildly. Recently I ordered take-out. I arrived there to pick it up after 1 hour (the time they mentioned on the phone) and they say it would be 5 minutes. I asked again after about 15 minutes of waiting and they say just a couple of minutes. They literally lie to your face!!!
It took me 1 hour of waiting at the restaurant before receiving my order (2 hours in total from when we called to place the order). I had a similar experience last time I ordered take out from here. I'm done with this place. I'd generally consider myself to be a quite patient, easy-going person, but SERVICE IS A CHRONIC PROBLEM here and WAIT TIMES ARE BADLY MISMANAGED!!! At least be up-front, honest with your customers!!

If you gonna eat.. prepare to wait.. Today, I hade a craving for Thai food. Growing up as a Canadian born Chinese ( cbc) and having experienced authentic ethnic (mostly asian) cuisines all my life. I know the quality of thai food in ottawa is sub-par at best.

Anyways, I checked out urbanspoon.com and found Baan Thai which was rated very high and only a stone's throw from my office. So I ordered take out... at 11:45.

The Experience

Remeber I got Take-Out (Im not expecting much)

I get there and it is surprisingly busy, small and packed. So I pay for my food and wait for the food to come out. 10 mins pass its 12:10 and i wonder where my food is. Another 10 min pass .. im still wondering. I ask the nice and "cute" thai girl working there. She says " another 5 minutes" finally after 45 mins i get my food. Man thats slow, i know how fast you can cook this stuff (family use to own a restaurant) and 45mins??? Thats insane not very happy, but at least the food is suppose be good. Right?

Dining - in?

Oh and there was a table of 4 who had a reservation at 11:45 - didnt get seated until 12:20. Calling in for Reservation is a start. But I dont know why you would come to eat here at all.

The Food..

So I order # J. a stir fried rice noodle with chicken, veg and chili sauce. 11.45 including tax. Menu says comes with hot and sour soup ( only if you dine in apparently)

What I ate was
Rice noodle that in a sauce that tasted like Ketchup and cheap chili sauce. Bland, at least they had some vegtables. Apparently this dish is spicy, well it was as spicy as well the spicy ketchup you can buy in your grocery store. Rate of dish (2/10)

Final Thoughts

Maybe their rice dishes are is better.. but I do can mix coconut milk and pre mix sauces.
Anyways I will not going back. Lost me as a customer.
Rate of Restaurant (3/10) - Food is terrible but it filled my stomach.

Post #1 for the C.B.C glutton

One of the best in Ottawa. Have to make a reservation - both for lunch and dinner...but worth it...

The food was great. I loved the shrimp spring rolls. Prices and service were decent. I would definitely return to this restaurant.

Super food in a simple, yet elegant environment. We have been to Baan Thai dozens of times and never had a bad meal. We have recommended it to others and they loved it too. The chicken with potatoes in yellow curry is the stuff of obsession in our house. We love it!!!

Fantastic Place. Often get takeout. Best to make a reservation or arrive when the restaurant opens... there aren't a lot of tables and they fill up quickly.

I love this little place close to my work (Baan Thai) so much. I also went to Khao Thai (our favourite Thai spot in Ottawa) for girls’ night last week and made yellow curry as my Canada Day potluck item (multicultural, right?). I’m probably going to order Thai takeout for lunch today too. Yum.
