Review Kanata Noodle House - Ottawa

Jessica O
Second visit here and won’t be the last. There are tons of options of dishes and some of the best pho I’ve had. Tried the egg rolls and rice paper rolls this time and once again was not disappointed, rice paper rolls are now a must-order for me.

Consistently delicious, courteous and fast service, generous portions. Highly recommended Vietnamese food in the west end. The brisket pho is so good, perfectly slow cooked beef, tender and flavorful broth. Hot and fresh deep fried wontons make the perfect appetizer and the tea pairs perfectly with the food. Just go try it if you have not done so already!

We randomly picked this place as we were in the mood for pho. The staff are very friendly and there is an adequate amount of seating. They are also kid friendly, offering high chairs if needed. The food was not bad. The meat with the rice dish could have been a better cut as it was chewy. The bún riêu had a fishy broth (we just prefer it less fishy when we make it at home). The vegetable spring rolls were very good and the peanut sauce was really yummy. We ended the meal with their iced coffee. They came in really good to go cups and were nice and strong like Viet coffee should be!

Not my go-to pho place, but not the worst one either. We had: -Bun Bo Hue: The soup itself was very savory which I liked. I wished they made the broth itself spicy instead of putting hot oil on top because it really irritated my throat. -Shrimp rice wraps: Didn’t like the vermicelli they used. Tasted very pasty. -Vermicelli bowl: Decent tasting except for the vermicelli because again, pasty. -Viet Iced coffee: Recommend-this one tasted great. Just be mindful that it is on the sweeter side.

Seafood with crunchy noodles was very yummy. The Mango milkshake was awesome! Not too sweet. Real mango flavour. You gotta try it.

Great place if you are craving or want to try Vietnamese food. They have a giant selection of meals. Prepare for really big portion sizes that can go beyond your calorie count if you are watching that!

Very good vermicelli, smokey bbq pork. Pho is crazy good, basically on par with one of my favorites, pho 99, while also distinguishing itself with its flavor. The service is pretty good and the wait time for food is very fast, I visited when there were alot of people in the restaurant and I still only waited maybe 5min for my order.

Super fast service and the prices are ridiculously low. This is just an amazing Vietnamese noodle place and the freshness of the food is awesome. I couldn't possibly ask for anything more since the price was so low for what we got. I've been here three times and have not had one bad bite of food. Warning: the first time I came here, I actually ordered the large soup and I had soup for days! The large soup is enough to feed a family of four.

This place is always packed This place is always delicious This place gives you huge servings Now all they need is Uber Eats Delicious

Go there every time I'm in town and love the food. Tried the new location and it did not disappoint. Excellent restaurant.

The spring roll and pho was really great! I would have like a little more coffee :) but I would highly recommend this restaurant - especially if you are very hungry. Service was great and the food came quickly.
Lisanne Roy Beauchamp
Favourite stop every time we visit Ottawa. If you like pho, this is THE place to go!
Mila Martel
I like the food. Gets busy at dinner time. I feel they don't spend enough time for the take out orders. The food tastes better at the restaurant. Service is good and they try to get your food within reasonable time.

Best pad Thai I've ever tried. Loved the Tom Kha Hai Chicken pho soup. Service is very professional and efficient. This is our third time back and has quickly become our favourite spot to eat in Kanata!

I had heard the food was excellent so I came from Gatineau and was not disappointed. So delicious! And thanks to our friendly waitress, Nini, for being so awesome! Will return for sure!

Great food, Great service. Hugh portions great price. Loved it.

We are regulars. I know I can't go wrong going to this place. Food is delicious and the staff is super friendly and efficient. Service within minutes. Fridays, always packed!

First all, order the small soups, the portions are huge. Very subtle and tasty broth, loads of fresh garnishes and tasty appetizers (I had the pork rolls, perfectly fried and tasty). All at a very reasonable price.

Went there yesterday..Didn't like the service at all..Waitresses are not welcoming at all with very blunt face like they are forced to do it...Food was very good but they should work on training customer service...
Marzenna Potera
Good. 've seen better choice for phos, but the taste was right. Meat sliced nicely thin, rare maybe to thin to stay rare in hot soup, tendons chunks too big though giving rather unpleasant aftertaste. The portions are huge. I believe large bowl keeps a liter of soup or even more! The waitresses could have any training maybe.
Peter Wilson
Excellent on every aspect! Ha and his attentive team will look after you every time.... at either location!

Excellent as always................................

I love this spot, service might be impersonal, but who cares! The food is wonderful, and full of flavour.

The Kanata noodle house is our favourite place to go. The employees are very friendly and always welcome you with a smile. We have our favourite meals that we order each time we come. It brings back many memories as it is the first place my fiance and I met 2 years and 3 months ago on a blind date.

Congratulations on your win this evening at The WOBEA Awards.

Good food great service. Have yet to have a bad meal here.

I bought three soups : 1. beef brisket soup with chicken broth and 2. Beef Brisket with beef broth for take out. The broth smelled very bad and meat was off.

Very poor experience. Will not be going back there or recommend it. Stay away from this poor joint.

I ordered a large bowl of pho soup. Extremely tasty and well done. I highly recommend it. I ordered a large portion and it was too much food.

First time visitor - I had D9 - chicken curry with veggies and rice as take-out. It had nice flavour and it was a good portion for the price. Good service, I was greeted immediately and they offered me the larger menu instead of watching me struggle with the take out Pamphlet. I’m looking forward to going again.

Came here with two friends with a recommendation that it’s the best Pho in town. I ordered the Seafood Pho in Chicken broth. The broth was very clear and not heavy at all. The seafood components in it were decent, but I expected more. I had a side of shrimp spring rolls which was really good. The ambience is very casual and the food came out very quick. Overall it’s nothing too fancy, and I wouldn’t say it’s the best in ottawa, but it was definitely good and I would come here again if I was in the area. OH and they don’t have vegetable broth, which took me by surprise.

Quality is dropping. Visited the restaurant on July 21/17 for dinner. Order A2 (pork) & A3 (veg) spring-rolls. Service was quick but the app was sad. Looked like mush inside, could not tell the 2 different types apart, taste was disgusting. Complained twice, 1st to waiter and 2nd to cashier. Cashier claimed that the recipe is not new and its the most popular item on the menu. While we sat there for almost an hour during our dinner, did not see any other spring roll orders come out...just the rice paper app. I ordered D3 (chicken&shrimp) pad thai dish and my wife ordered the same but just chicken. The amount of chicken in the dish was pretty sad, had to look for it. The shrimp still had their tails attached. When eating shrimp mixed in with a pile of noodles, having to stop chewing and pull membrane out of your mouth is not very pretty. I'm pretty sure they have changed the spring roll recipe because my daughter who visits there quite often does not remember the guts looking like mush. Too bad, really used to like this place.

Great Pad Thai!
Pho and other soup are really good too.
Large servings.
Service is good.
Spring Rolls are great.

Definitely recommended.
Starlet16
I love this place. I have only had their pho and vermicelli dishes and tend to take it out, but they are consistently good. Their spring rolls are extra crispy and awesome.
Marc Martin
Been there a couple times now. Food (soup) are really good. Had the spring rolls and they are good. Only negative is the waitresses are not the friendliest in the world. But I still recommend it!

Place is clean. Food was quick yet flavourful. Our waiter was not too attentive even though the place was relatively quiet. Overall the food was good and reasonably priced. I would go back.

This place was great! We ordered the shrimp in rice paper wrap first and it was hot and delicious. I bit into it a bit to quickly in an effort to get in in my belly sooner...beware they are hot! They weren't greasy as I thought they would be which was a pleasant surprise. I ordered the Thai Coconut Seafood Noodle Soup. It was a large portion and I was unable to finish the broth even though I really wanted to. There could have been more seafood but the tasty tangy broth made up for it. It wasn't overly salty either which was a plus. Highly recommended dish to order. The service was prompt and efficient. Some might construe it as short...maybe even rude but they are just in a hurry and being efficient. We were asked during a down time in service how our meal was by a pleasant man. I would definitely go back next time I am in Ottawa for a dry noodle to test it out.

I was not please at all with the service. Servers were rude and the food was okay. I am vietnamese, and they have said some rude things. Don't go. This is the first time I have ever wrote a bad review.

Best Pho and Pad Tai in town. Inexpensive and great portion sizes. Service is great and quick. What more can you ask for. You will see me there 2 - 3 times a month.

In my opinion this is Ottawa's best restaurant for phở, hủ tiếu, and bún bò Huế. Delicious soups, large bowls, generous herb garnishes, lots of tables, and friendly staff. Highly recommended!
William Taylor
I go 2 or 3 times a month with my fiancée and her mother and we all love this place! Which means it must be good as both of them are notoriously difficult to please! Consistently excellent pho and appetisers! My favourites are the pork spring rolls and the Pho Bo Hue (S13)! Prices can't be beat for the quality!
Warp
Decent big portions. This place has good prices, and large portions. The Pho is decent, the large is decently large and tasty, the Pad Thai is also huge (probably will want to doggy bag it). I love their S5 which is basically a Pho with Tom Yum soup broth. Spicy and tasty too.

There are better Pho places in town but this one beats the Pho places everywhere in Ottawa except maybe the ones in chinatown, this place is the next best thing for those living in the east end
Wu_gwei21
Fast, friendly and affordable. For ten bucks I can get filled. The taste is pretty good for Kanata. It takes less than 5 minutes for your order to be on the table. The servers are friendly and courteous (which many AsIan restaurant lacks).

Best Vietnamese Restaurant in all of Ottawa. My husband and I drive from Orleans to Kanata to eat at this restaurant. Their food is amazing.

Simply "The Best". This is the best Noodle House in Ottawa. Every Soup is unique and delicious. A must for all to visit.

The BEST pho in Ottawa!!!. I'm telling you I have gone to this restaurant 4 times in one week. This is hands down the best/my favourite pho place in Ottawa and that's a big feat considering I go all the way out to Kanata for this food and I live right by China Town. The S14/15 is amazing coconuty noodles; regular pho is great and also the vermicelli is amazing too. The portions and the quality are all on point I have been raving about this place for anyone who love Vietnamese food!!!
Paul Primeau
Was really forward to my chicken and rice. Normally it comes with hoison sauce. Every other pho place does anyway. I get it home, no hoisin. Way to ruin a meal. Talk about cheap. Will never order from there again.
John Chen
Don't come 2 minutes before it opens or the rude waitress will tell you to wait outside.
John Forrest
Beef stew with baguette. Delicious rich broth with warm crusty baguette to dip - highly recommended

The Best!!!. I used to have to go all the way downtown to get good authentic Vietnamese food... NOT anymore this is the best spot in Ottawa, staff is always incredibly friendly and they are open past 9pm which is very rare in Kanata. Amazing food and staff!!! Two Thumbs up!

Absolutely awesome place to eat!. I go here at least once a week since it is a central location for all of my different jobs. I first came here with some of my co-workers and I love the taste of their pho. They use real stuff (unlike there are other places who uses MSG soups and frozen stuff).

I usually order pad-thai, pho, rice dish or bun(vercemelli) when I am here and everything is just absolutely amazing. They give you enough ingredients like meat and sauce for everything ...... and everything is just made to perfection.

I once order on the phone for pick up and my food was ready within five minutes.

To sum it up , great service, great food, great speed, awesome place to go!!!!!
FineWineAndy
Great Pho!. Was there the other day for lunch with a friend and it is the best Pho I have had in a long time , maybe the best ever......

Lots of contents, fresh and tasty. Service was friendly and fast.

Good prices. Great value. My new favourite!
Hoxjennifer
Friendly, lovely home-style Viet Food. Service is always friendly, authentic home-style Vietnamese dishes for mostly not-too-shabby prices. My favourite go-to dishes are the Bun Bo Hue (S9 or S10), Pho is good for a place outside of Chinatown, as well as the Pad Thai (all varieties).
Generically Honest
Great pho in the west end. Place is great the several times I have been there. Are you going to get pho right from Vietnam? No, but who the heck and is stupid enough to expect that from a place like this or anywhere in Ottawa for that matter?

Manager tries to be friendly as best he asianly can be and food came promptly after we ordered. The menu was not as extensive as a Chinatown pho place, but this is the suburbs of kanata. The quality and quantity was quite good and enough to certainly keep me coming back. Prices are roughly the same as Chinatown pho.

Worth trying. Food was plentiful and very tasty. Great place for lunch if you are hungry feeling adventurous and in the mood for something other than burgers or sandwiches. Made a nice change.

The best noodle soup I ever eat.
Menu item #1.

Excellent food! I've been 3 times so far and every item I've ordered has been delicious. Fantastic fresh ingredients and quick service. The staff are friendly and the owner makes sure you are happy. Fantastic place, check this place out

Avoid if you can. The service was a complete shamble. End to end time for entering the place and exiting was 1 hour 55 minutes for 2 soups. The restaurant was messy. Disgusted by their sticky carpets. And almost puked when I got a sneak peak of their kitchen through the doors as I was paying my bill. There were sprouts and vegies dropped on the floor, vegetables boxes laying around every where, kitchen staff didn't have any uniforms, no head covers and the smell was awe-full.

GREAT FOOD!. I quite often eat at this restaurant. The owner is very friendly and is not shy to come say hi and ask how your food is. Portions are large and the price is fair.

If you haven't tried it, you should...but bring a big appetite the portions are quite large!!!

One of our favourite places. My daughter and I are big fans of Pho. Nothing is more comforting than a big bowl of hot noodles and we've been to many establishments serving Pho around Ottawa. One day, while looking for a certain store in Kanata, we ran across this small establishment in a strip-mall and decided to stop in. It's now on our regular rotation. The food is wonderful and, for the cost of a meal at McDonald's, you can have a healthy, delicious bowl of Pho.

Unlike many small Pho shops, the décor of this restaurant is quite lovely. I wouldn't say it is stunning, but it's clean and modern. The bathrooms are also clean.

Upon being seated, you are automatically served a pot of tea, which is a pleasure to sip while perusing the menu. The restaurant has a large menu that includes many items (not only Pho). But as fans of Pho, my daughter and I have only ordered Pho and tried various appetizers. Our favourite appetizers are the rice wraps, which are generous, yummy and come with plenty of peanut sauce for dipping. Our absolute favourite soup is one of the specials, the Tom Kha Gai (S15), which is a coconut soup with mussels and shrimp. It is so lip-smacking good, we will sometimes order the "large", because it is so big we can bring home leftovers and enjoy it for a second meal. I also recommend the vegetable and tofu Pho, which is my second favourite.

Give this place a try. Your wallet will thank you.

I go here once a week because my dads friends owns the place. I think that it's really sanitary and nice there. Their dishes are really big and the price of the food is reasonable.

Good Food and the Price is Right!. I work in Kanata and often go to the Kanata Noodle House for lunch, I really like their shrimp rolls and pho soup. The prices are very reasonable which is always nice.

Food is average, service is TERRible!. I am Vietnamese, born and bred so I like to think I know a thing or two about authentic Viet food - and I'd like to say that the flavour and quality is sub-par...at BEST.

Vietnamese food is known for it's light and fresh flavours but I found that the Noodle House's food is neither. One review I read mentioned that the chicken was bland and tasted like it was old - or at least not fresh and I tend to agree. The vegetables for the noodle bowls (or Pho) weren't fresh, either. It seemed like they took what other tables didn't eat, put it all together and redistributed it amongst the new customers.

I found that what was worse than the quality of food was the service - or lack thereof. I am very lax when it comes to reviewing service because as a rule, the food should always come first, but I have to mention the service because they took it to a whole new level! We waited over an hour for noodle bowls which you would get in Chinatown in about 10 mins during peak hours. I gave the place the benefit of the doubt and ordered delivery the next time and was told that there weren't enough drivers so there wasn't any delivery available (this happened twice). When there WAS finally delivery available, we waited 2 hrs. After 3 phone calls, I decided to go down there to see if I could get some bloody food. When I arrived, I was told that the food was being "packed up" (after 2+ hrs!) and the packing up took 20 mins.

I have heard similar stories from friends in the area that have tried the Noodle House so am quite certain that my experience was not an anomaly or simply chalked up to a series of bad coincidences.

Good Food, bad service. Not a question. The food in this restaurant is really good. One of the best in Ottawa. We love the noodle soup and the pad thai that we came to this restaurant twice in less than a week.

However, the service was slow and full of errors. It is your responsibility to watch out.

This evening, we order a large vermicelli soup and a pad thai. About 10 minutes into our meal, we doubted the vermicelli soup was not the size we've ordered. (At least not the size we've had before.) When asked, we were confirmed it was medium. Then the manager went to double checked our order, it was Large that we ordered. He didn't walk to our table, instead he waived us from the cashier table (about 10 feet away) that we ordered large but were given medium. He corrected the bill from the cashier table. No apology nor explanation. When paying the bill, another waiter gave us a bill-tray containing 2 bills, one wrong bill and another correct bill. The waiter had me to pay the correct bill. Had I not noticed the error, I will be paying large while eating medium. The waiter knew the error but acted like no error had happened.

Last Sunday (16/3/13), we happened to sit next to the cashier, and observed all the food mixed up among the waiters and 3 pickup customers. For some reasons, the food for customer A were given out to customer B and customer C. When they figured that out, that was a few minutes later, one of the waiters ran outside to look for customer B and customer C. A few minutes after the waiter returned, customer B returned with the food. They passed that returned food to customer A. Then, about another 5 minutes later, customer C returned. The waiter passed the returned food to customer A. So, now customers A had the returned foods from customer B and customer C. I believe customer B and customer C are good guys, but I don't think it is good to pass the food to customer A given that the food was already outside the restaurant for a good 5-10 minutes. OK. Just to be fair. This was only my side of observation from my table. It may not be accurate on what was really happened, but it was a real chaos for sure.

Again, the food was great. Just watched out what you order, and check the food before you eat and check the bill carefully before you pay.

Have been 4-5 times. Portions are large, usually get a lunch out of it for the following day. They have multiple size options for a lot of the menu, and the small would be med-large in alot of restaurants. It is not expensive. $20 for 2 people is completely reasonable. Food has always been quick. Pho is great. Also has one of the best pad thais I've had in the city.
Selene
The food was good, especially liked the noodles, which tasted lightly different from the others. However, the service was terrible -- I was served the wrong dish, and the only reason I took it was, I didn't want to spend another 30 mins sitting and waiting!
Christabeldacosta
Disappointed. The worst experience I ever had. The restaurant was busy so we knew we were in for a wait. No worries. We put in our order, and waited and waited. 45 mins later we still had not been served and people who had arrived after us were being served. We talked to one of the waiters and he proceeded to point out that they were busy. Yes and we had been patient. He made us feel like we were stupid for asking him where our food was. As soon as he left we walked out. Never again to visit the Kanata Noodle house. Absolutely disgraceful service and attitude. I have never had to resort to walking out of a restaurant until that evening. By the way total time we waited was 55mins...still no food.
ChristinaB
Loved the pho here! Lots of beef and great broth!!

Could be awesome. The ingredients were fresh and the food very tasty. Better than most noodle houses. Service was the one disappointment. It seemed a bit disorganized, though manager was attentive. I will try this one again.

Food is okay but service is slow and management is unhelpful. Our lunch order was lost and the wait was unacceptable. Not going back anytime soon.

Awful service, average food. This place opened up a few month ago replacing the popular Phnom Penh Cambodian restaurant. It should be avoided during lunch time on Fridays. We had a reservation so at least got seated as soon as we arrived but then had to wait more than 1 hour (yes a full hour) for the food to arrive. Everybody had simply ordered either Pho or stir-fry so normally you would expect much faster service. In the end we had to remind the server we've been waiting so long for him to check with the kitchen.

The food itself was ok, nothing to write home about but not bad either. However, the management was unapologetic about the outrageous wait time. when we asked why the food was so late he said that's normal for Friday lunch (really? 1-hour wait can't be normal anywhere anytime) and their kitchen can't do any better when they are at full capacity.

Needless to say we won't be back anytime soon. the management needs to get its act together. Either reduce the seating capacity to something you can handle or increase the kitchen staff. Oh, and in most cases a simple apology works much better than nonsense excuses (he acted as if it was our fault for coming at noon on a Friday).
Kris
I tried this place and found it pricy and the food was just average. I will go to another place next time. I prefered ox head better food and value

Average Food, Questionable Service. We've been there twice. Once about two months ago and once recently.

When we went two months ago, we were very pleased with the food and the service: It was some of the best I've had from any similar restaurant in Ottawa.

We went a few days ago with some family that had never tried Vietnamese food, and it was a disaster. Nobody came to take our order for a good 20 minutes after being seated despite the fact that we were the only ones there at 5:45 PM and there was an abundance of staff that wasn't paying any attention. Eventually, what was apparently an off-duty staff member came over and took our ticket, but was apparently not pleased about having to have to do so; He walked off without saying anything and ignored our request for water. When the food was brought out, two of the four dishes were wrong. The server firmly argued that this was what we had ordered, despite obviously not having any clue what we had actually ordered - he eventually brought out the ticket and admitted one was wrong... He proceeded to argue that the other was still correct... Until we pointed out the item in the menu and confirmed that it wasn't. They obviously rushed out the two corrected meals too quickly because it was by far the worst pho I've ever eaten (cilantro soup). My wife told me her curry was not served as described in the menu, undercooked and generally bland. We got the bill and didn't linger.

All in all, the first visit I'd rank as a 4/5 star in its price range. Good food, well priced. The second visit I'd give a 1/5, in that they managed to serve us food in the end.

Since I genuinely enjoyed the first visit, I'd sincerely like to hear about others' experiences with this restaurant. Maybe we just went on training night or something.... Ottawa diners, what do you think?
Jojo
We ordered the pork spring rolls - one order consisted of two spring rolls cut in half. Probably the crispiest spring rolls that I have had, ever. Good flavour, not greasy and the standard Vietnamese dipping sauce had the right balance of salty and sweet - like a good Vietnamese dish should have. (Bonus was that they have half price appetizers Mondays to Wednesdays).
