Review Lone Star Texas Grill - Ottawa

Etienne Rached
The waiter was professional, kind and funny. He introduced himself as "Danger" which makes me believe the staffs use nicknames instead of their real names. The drinks were great, a little bit sweet but tastes good. The food was amazing, we ordered a Fajita combo for two (DOS). No regrets!

After eating all over in Ottawa, we chose our last meal to be a bit different. A texmex restaurant in canada was waht we came up with. Again, empty due to mandates, so exceptional service. Honestly everywhere we went staff was super friendly. Canadians know how to treat people it seems. We ordered many margaritas (ofcourse) which they had several flavors to choose from even a few unique kinds. They were very tasty, but questionable on alcohol levels. To drink as many as we did, we should have been stumbling home, but I guess they got us to order more this way too. We gor nachos as app and ofcoirse steaks for dinner. Menu was decent but I believe a few more options and some additional choice of sides are needed. My steak was great, but the wifes was very under cooked for her preference. Waiter took it back and the manager delivered it back himself. Again, good service. The eaitwr came back and said he took half off our order as well. Not needed nor did we ask, but very cool of him to offer. So we ordered another round of drinks and churos for dessert. Honestly the churos were the major highlight for me. Best I've ever had (I've never been to Mexico or even California or Texas for that matter though) I liked the dipping sauces if chocolate and caramel they came with. I mixed the two and way over ate. The decire was pretty nice and felt very open and personal. I liked that even if the place was packed, I didn't feel it. Prices were par for steakhouse type restaurants. This was our biggest bill of the trip by far. Not top of my list of places to visit in Ottawa especially if your from america and even less if your from the south west as this place would not compare, but it was nice to relax, get great service and a good meal that was honest feeling as well as a different experience rolled into one.

This place is what you would expect in terms of TexMex Grill fare. Positives include lots of choices for sides, my daughter enjoyed fresh grilled veggies as a side and I must admit onion rings were super good if you like them crisp and crunchy. The margarita was very tasty and the fish tacos were good enough. My husband enjoyed his chimichanga. This place is a fair bet but a bit worn around the edges.

Decent Tex-Mex restaurant and steakhouse. Food, prices and service are ok, friendly staff. It's a chain-restaurant, so don't expect anything out of the ordinary. Dinner anytime again!

Usually super happy with our orders from here. Unfortunately tonight that was not the case. The crispy chicken and steak fajita bowls we ordered tonight were unfortunately unacceptable. It looked like they had already been partially eaten or were leftovers. Both bowls had barely any rice or lettuce. We usually love everything we order from here and have ordered these bowls before but unfortunately after the quality we received tonight we will be ordering from elsewhere.

So this is what you get for 20 bucks these days. This was suppose to be the chicken fajitas bowl but Iโ€™m not quite sure what this isโ€ฆ Its hard to support local when this the quality of food you receive!

Great portions and prices! Service by Pepper in Ottawa was excellent! Chicken and bacon tacos were great and their variety of margheritas are absolute magic! You can also upgrade your margherita to a Texan size...so worth it!๐Ÿน๐Ÿน๐Ÿน๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ’›

Great service at this location.

Getting seats for a party of 10 was fast.

The service was fast, very efficient.

The portions of the food was good.

The alcoholic drinks we very good.

Toilets were very clean.

I do not remember the server's name but she was amazing!

I will be back!

Most delicious fajitas in town. Love the location. The service is always great. The waiters are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Keep it up.

Best place for Texas food ๐Ÿ˜ love the spinach salad with garlic shrimp ๐Ÿค it was so well done with juicy taste of shrimp along with frozen on the rocks margarita nothing ever can beat this combo. Also loved the chicken Caesar salad was tender and delicious with fish tacos ๐Ÿฅ— will definitely explore the menu next time. Ambience is mixed with the food theme and service is good too. 8.5/10

Love the chips and salsa. I love the atmosphere and decor. Restaurant is large and clean. The problem is the consistency its been hit and miss with the entrees...steaks have been tough on a couple of occasions. Fajitas have disappointed as well. When things are good however they are good but do you really want to gamble on getting a decent meal.

We end there for a "quick" snack to get out of the heat and we got in before the rush. La Machine was around so the area was packed and the restaurant was short staffed. The food we had, nachos and chicken fingers were very tasty.

Our waitress was excellent and handled the situation really well including, in my opinion, some disrespectful customers diplomatically. She was very friendly and even took the time to chat with us while we paid for the bill.

I like lone star! They have good drinks and good food! They give you salasa and macho chips for free wich is a big bonus! I tried the soup one did not like it but everything else I ate was really amazing

Not one of the best Lone Star locations but can't really beat the downtown convenience. Don't think I'd come back though, food was ok and I felt like we were being rushed out.

Delicious! My husband and I tried to eat here on a Saturday night but it was too full, and we're happy we got to return and eat the following night.

They start you off with tortillas and salsa for free. I ordered a peppercorn burger with onion rings and my husband had a steak. Both were well made and tasted great. And my husband is a picky steak eater!

Service was very friendly and food was quick.

Will return next time we're in town.

I typically visit the location near St. Laurent which has great service and atmosphere. At this location, I felt the service was lacking. The food was greasier than normal and my salmon tacos were so spicy I could barely eat them. However, the unlimited salsa and chips never disappoint.

Awesome patio. Great service and endless nachos and salsa. This is a great spot to seat large groups. The overall quality of food is OK for casual dining. Wings are decent and portions are definitely Texas style ๐Ÿ˜‰Gulosus Hiba Justine Robles See-Food

i went to this place with a big group, almost 20 persons, kids and adults, the staff were professionals, they served us easily and smoothly.
actually you will notice that the guys there are really well trained and love to serve.
we ordered many things but the most yummy tbe mixed fajitas, try it and you will never regret.
salads, nachos, tortillas and ranches are just great.
suitable for families also.
highly recommended

A pretty standard Lonestar location, though the last time we went we were fairly disappointed, even with our expectations in check. The food was extra greasy (I expect a little oil, but properly fried food shouldn't be greasy), so maybe the oil wasn't hot enough? We ended up leaving feeling ill unfortunately just from the amount of grease. Probably just that one time, as we had been there before and everything was great.

However, they have great Pina-Coladas.

Horrible steak BEWARE. Had the 8oz pepper steak tonight after it was recommended by the waiter. i have to admit it was easily the worst steak i have ever had. it tasted like it went from the freezer to the microwave then quickly flopped onto the grill. nice patio. beer is cold. eat somewhere else...or at least don't order the steak.

Patio. I love the patio more than the food! It's nice to have a good patio to enjoy drinks on downtown!

Great Experience Every Time!. I recently moved downtown Ottawa and Lone Star is a favourite among me and my friends. This location always has great drinks, food and service. I always leave genuinely happy with every aspect of my experience. The only negative thing is that on nice days it is often too packed on the patio but what else can you expect from a great location.

Consistency. We have the same Lone Star chain in Toronto and it is just as good every single time at every single location. Kudos!

The food in the byward market location was terrible and not up to Lone Star standards. The chicken was fake, not the usual freshly grilled. It tasted like the fake, gummy stuff you can buy pre packaged at the grocery store. Very disappointed and will not return.

Long wait!. Came in the other night for a meal... took too long to get seated we ended up leaving. Too bad.

Declining Quality. Owners please read!. Lonestar has been open for many years now. It was my introduction to Tex Mex at their original Baseline and Fisher location when I was just a kid. When I moved to Edmonton, the restaurant I missed most was the Lone Star. The closest we had was a Chilly's and it was lame by comparison. Their salsa came from a jar and their steaks were just fried.

Sadly.... the Lone Star has become a vicitim of it's own success and has lost most of it's quality and reason for spending your money there.

Their salsa used to be something you'd want the secret recipe for. Now it's slop dispensed from a bucket. It's no longer fresh, has lost the great cilantro zest and is spicy rather than flavourful.

The "boat" of condiments has become this tiny sushi tray with barely anything on it. I literally order an extra bowl of lettuce and salsa just to have something else in my fajita other than meat.

They now charge a surcharge if you order steak fajitas rather than chicken or shrimp. Kinda lame. Worst of all though, I don't think they're cooking with mesquite anymore. Their meats used to be infused with a delicous smokey flavour. Now it tastes like it's fried with steak spice sprinkled over it... and it's greasy. How does steak get greasy if cooked on a grill? Sadly the chicken is also now always dry.

One thing they still get right though are their tortillas. Always made fresh and delicious. It's an automated process however so I don't know how they can screw that up at this point.

The worst location for service has to be the one in the Byward market. Perhaps they think they're only serving tourists who will never come back so it doesn't matter?

The best was actually not in Ottawa but rather Kingston! Great outdoor patio around the back with fast and friendly service. I don't think driving 2 hours for a fajita is worth it however.

I hope the managers and owners read these reviews. The people of Ottawa have loved and supported this chain for years. Everybody I talk to has made the same comments I've made above and don't go there nearly as often as they used to. Please don't become like Chilly's! Bring back the old Salsa recipe and make it fresh! Bring back the mesquite! Bring back the friendly service! If you cook it, we will come!

My girlfriend and I love this place. The waiters always smile at us and deliver exceptional service. The deep fried ice cream and apple sizzler are simply excellent. We only ate actual food once; the mesquite burger was very good. On our last stay, we had a new waitress who was under evaluation. I was so happy with the service that I just had to call the manager to tell her what an awesome job she did. I am certainly returning there.

Just Not The Same Lone Star. The original Lone Star at the corner of Baseline and Fisher was always such a treat. I never had a bad meal, nor did I ever hear of anyone who did. Franchising has not treated them well. The people are great. The service is great. Sadly, the food has continued to go down hill over the past few years. I can't possibly believe that the tortilla chips and salsa are made fresh daily at each location. I guess that these items are made on mass and shipped to the various locations. The meals have suffered greatly and there is no continuity in the food from location to location. I really hope that someone can focus on quality control of the food. My recent meal was comped but I still left with a bitter taste in my mouth as I was made to feel that what I was served was prepared correctly. Not on your life. Dined Feb 14, 2013 at St. Laurent location.

Great service, awful food. I used to really like Lone Star about ten years ago when I used to go to the Baseline location, but every recent experience has been a letdown.

Most recently I had their build your own soft tacos and they were sickly sweet. I asked for the carnitas, spicy chicken/turkey, and beef. I got sweet bbq pork (maybe that's what they call carnitas, but they're way off), sweet pulled chicken/turkey, and sweet beef.

If you want anything resembling mex, go elsewhere, if you want bbq, go elsewhere, if you want to enjoy a meal... go elsewhere.

I do have to say though, the service was top notch.

Yuk. I was there when val and larry opened up on fisher and baseline.this was gross.took my son for nachos and beer.val must be rolling in his grave knowing his chicken nachos have turned into taco bell.service was okay but i dont eat service when i m hungry.such a waste of such a great original spot.

DON"T GO. Worst service I have ever experienced, food was okay but over-priced for what it was. Will not be going back.
Sarah Izzy Al-Switi
Service is terrible, and the food always comes burnt.

Late night issues. And it wasnt that late. I think that it was maybe 9:30 on a weeknight. There was no sizzle to the plate. It was clear that we didnt get the "peaktime" freshness. The totillas were still amazing but when you have high expectations it was still a bit of a disappointment. That being said I would give it another chance.

Had a birthday dinner here. Great friendly waiters. Horrible managers. Very pushy. Extremely rude. Never been so pissed off by the rudeness of the managers. The sad part is that the waiters that usually are the ones that get it wrong where the ones that made it a good meal. Except the mangers kept rushing and being extremely rude. For that reason. I can not recommend this restaurant at all. This location only thought. Anyother location is fair game. I had a group of 23 people. So they should be grateful that I'm driving customers to their location not me having to put up with their rudeness and childish behaviours. Recommend the restaurant concept & food except the location Fairly well priced too.

Great food, awful ambience. Just get the chicken fajita enchiladas and you will be deeply satisfied! I've also tried my significant other's steak and ribs combo; the ribs truly rocked my world. I love that Lone Star makes their own tortilla chips, flour tortillas (you can watch them being made) and salsa (which changes according to who makes it). I usually get rice and beans as the side to my main. Watch the beans, though. About half the time they are too salty to enjoy on their own. Mix with salsa and scoop with chips! If you can't handle the hokey theme restaurant and servers who have names like "Sunshine", just get the food to go. You'll have to pay for the salsa and chips that otherwise come free at the table, but if you can't handle the country theme, it is worth it.

Service is terrible. Server s are not empowered to make simple substitutions of sides to keep a customer happy (tortilla chips instead of fries, for example). Food tends to be very greesy (eg. Quesadillas are soggy and slimy). I won't be going here again.

Service was ok. Food was not good. Steak was small, and tough and full of grizzle. Fries limp, skimpy onion rings. Definately overpriced. For a little more money could have had keg, and enjoyed it.
Matt
Not a place I wold typically seek out, but the food was very good.

The Lone Star on George Street is a very open and airy place with comfortable booths and tables. There is a bar, with a television overhead and the kitchen is partly visible from some of the seats
The Waffle
The star of the night showed up soon after. Lone Star uses skirt steak, which they grill over real Mesquite wood imported from Texas. The beef was nicely seasoned, could have been enjoyed on its own. White meat is the chicken you get, grilled the same way as the steak, with the same seasoning. It was juicy, quite good.
